Oberheim OB-X "Analog Dreams"

YouTube via retrosound72 | September 29, 2010

"vintage synth demo N°200 by RetroSound
thanks to all for watching, for the great comments and support.

Here is my absolute favourite Analog Synthesizer ever:
Oberheim OB-X 8-Voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer from the year 1979.
The SEM based OB-X is very different to the later Curtis Chip based OB-Xa. The Sound is fantastic raw and unique. My dream synth!

The synth demo shows some self-made retro-sounds."

Synth audio comes in at 2:12.
"A challenge to figure out how to get a delayed envelope well after the key has been released.

The trick was three envelope generators, a signal processor, an interface Q961 and plenty of patience to dial it all in. I actually used a digital volt meter to check my voltages along the way. The inversion was particularly difficult.

I also demo'd the Oakley Equinoxe voltage controlled phase shifter. Nice sound."

MacBeth M5N analog synthesizer

via this auction
"An extremely rare chance to bid on a MacBeth M5N (less than 100 ever made) semi modular synthesiser designed by Ken MacBeth. This is the latest version of the M5 with the modded envelopes which are a lot "snappier" and the filters have been modded to improve S/N. Otherwise the M5N is just a new paintjob and and new slider caps. The sound of the MacBeth is just phenominal...from some of the videos and interviews on the web it seems that Ken took the best of his favourite synths (EMS VCS3, Arp 2600 and MiniMoog) and created a real analogue from scratch using discrete components (no chips) and to my ears this is a real success...its got the qualities of all of the synths which is weird as you end up saying things like "thin but warm", "fat and ethereal" which just doesnt make sense...until you hear the M5N.

YMO - Solid State Survivor (cover)

Here's a fancy version of Solid State Survivor (ソリッド・ステイト・サヴァイヴァー) by Yellow Magic Orchestra, complete with a very silly video of greenscreen, some of my film photos, Super 8 footage, video feedback and a few shots of YMO I found on Google Images.

This is also my first HD video despite the fact that I still don't have an HD camera - the video clips are stitched together from multiple SD shots (if you look closely at the first shot you can see the seams). This is also probably going to be the last video I make for a while because I'm going to university next week, so enjoy - it could possibly be the last ever Envelope Generator production!

"Here is a short demo of the Cwejman RES-4 Quad VC Resonators module.

This patch involve 3 intermodulating oscillators (Wiard Oscillator in LFO mode, Wiard Anti-Oscillator as a modulator, Tiptop Audio Z3000 as a modulator), which are filtered by a Wiard Boogie filter, itself modulated by the Wiard Oscilator.

12 dB/oct output of the Boogie filter is connected to the Cwejman RES-4. The tip was to modulate two bands of the RES-4 by an envelope (Wiard Envelator), which is trigged by a pulse rhythm created with the Intellijel uStep (clock signal is provided by the End output of a Bananalogue Serge VCS).

EFX processing through a nice Eventide Eclipse patch ;-) which give a Steve ROACH's like sound IMO."

S4K Dream Cover Pack on Korg X50 - space4keys collection

YouTube via Space4Keys | September 29, 2010
More on YouTube here - Remember, you can click through any video once it starts to get to YouTube.
"This is a high quality "plug&play" collection of the best known Dream Theater's songs, and some from the keyboard player of the band, Jordan Rudess. It consist in the essential leads, pads, organs, pianos and splits used by the band.
If you looked at this as it was impossible, you'll be now glad to note it's a reality, and you'll feel like Rudess himself when you'll play these amazing sounds. The collection was created analyzing the real sounds of the displayed songs/sounds, and adapting them to run on X50 and compatible workstations .

Combis: (every combi folder has inside the necessary layers to function)

A 001: Rudess Lead unforgettable and legendary Lead tone from the Scenes From a Memory and very similar to his Kurzweil Lead.

A002: Solitary Shell Lead this is another excellent lead, more liquid and dark but with a lot of presence.

A003: Wah Lead it's the strongest Lead sound, ready to be wah-controlled and to give the expression you need in your most wildest solos.

A004: 6:00 Lead an excellent emulation of this abstract sound, very fat and powerful, get ready to play this song and greatest hits with this.

A 005: Wah Pig Riff this is a monster Pig Riff, adapted to have wah wah Control, it would be the most heavy and rough sound in your Key.

A006: Pull me Under Lead the best emulation of this sound, astonish your listener with this tone, also very used in others.

A007: Another Day Piano a very similar sound of Great Acoustic Piano, very used in DT songs but identically of the Piano on Another Day.

A008: Forsaken Piano this is the exact replica of the sound used in this song, you would belive it, and also works for DT with dark-mezzo Pianos and atmospheres.

A009: The Spirit Carries On Piano this a tone its alike to the Kurzweil Piano, maked so famous by Rudess and excellent for this and many others DT songs

A010: Erotomania Organ a nice and useful Organ sound, very equally to the one used in this song, also very powerful allows you to control the wah/phaser effect at your

A011: Learning To Live Intro a great layering with optimized programs for using this sound with many others songs, give the Rudess touch to your composition with this sound

A012: Surrounded Intro high quality Key Split, that let you play this amazing song with no problems at all, very easy to use and play

A013: Metropolis Intro a nice strings sound, exact the same used in this song and with many effects you can control

A014: Take The Time Intro another excellent creation followed the exact sound of the original song, this it's the time for you with this patch

A015: Octavarium Pad this is an exact duplication of the famous song, also ready to be used in your own creations .Never feel lack of pads again with this and the others Strings/Atmosphere sounds of this patch

A016: Octavarium Continuum a gold piece in the patch, why speding money on this expensive Gear if you can have it for less cost, you can have the Hakken Continuum power in your favourite key. Also very easy to control the portamento and heaviest than ever!

PRO ONE vs. PRO 12 analog vs. digital Prophet 5 - Harlem Nights

YouTube via harlemnightsmusic | September 29, 2010

Update via Crossmod in the comments: "This video should carry an Epileptic seizure warning." Good call.
"An analog vs a digital voice of the Sequential Prophet 5 (rev 3) synthesizer (1978):
- L channel = Sequential Pro One synth (1981)
- R channel = Creamware Pro 12 synth module (2006), in single voice mode

Mostly focusing on basic sonic quality, not features. Envelopes and filter levels were matched to eachother by ear (the number settings differ). It appeared to me that the Pro 12 has linear potmeters whereas in the Pro One the change rate increases when you turn the knobs. The Pro 12 was played with an EMU Xboard 61. No added fx or EQ. Both were recorded through the same mixer and soundcard.

There's quite a lack of proper Pro 12 demos on internet, hence I made this one for others deciding about it... A HQ mp3 of the test can be found at: www.harlemnightsmusic.com/PRO_ONE_VS_PRO_12.mp3

To my ears, the Pro 12 held up surprisingly well in this test against a famous analog bass synth, on just a single voice. Main sonic differences were in the filter and pulse width range, and the Pro One has a slightly rawer 'alive' feel esp in pulse wave sounds. But for most sounds mixed in in a track this all may not matter that much. Also, the Pro 12's unison can make up for much of it, with its added controls for number of unison voices / polyphony and voice detuning.

Next time: more music!

Enjoy
