Analogue Solutions Station X Y Mini-Modular Synthesizer(s): Fun with Noise

YouTube via rezfilter | November 15, 2010

"Here's a look at the Station X mini-modular synth and its complimentary counterpart, the Station Y by Analogue Solutions [www.analoguesolutions.com].

Station synths are compact "mini-modular" synthesisers. They contain all the essential ingredients to form complete synth patches.

This video features some random patches & finally some clangorous "noise" for your listening enjoyment. Although the video features some very quirky sounds and effects, the range of the X,Y synths, with their modulation possibilities, is virtually infinite.

*Also used: Oberkorn MK3 analogue sequencer (to sequence loops)

Synth Details: *Pure analogue voice circuitry *Fully patchable *Compact modular synth *Available as a module (without case) *Plenty of modulation possibilities *Rugged steel construction. *MIDI In for software sequencer / keyboard control."

Squarewave Parade Ming Ming Stereo Analog Ring Mod

via this auction

"Here is a description from the Squarewave Parade website:

'yet another silly name. this is a stereo ( dual mono ) analog passive ring ( or "balanced" ) modulator that is also capable of producing an octave up if only one input is used (achieved via internal switching - there are no other controls). unlike most ring modulators you will find this one does not come with a built in oscillator. this is done on purpose to give you the chance to use your own modulator and as a result it gives you a much wider range of possibilities. everything from AM radio static to tempo matched drum loops can be used to modulate your source. use of line level instruments like synths, mixers, and sound cards would be ideal. being a passive design ( meaning it does not require any power source to operate ) you will need to increase the level of quieter signals, such as guitar, to get the ring to work. you can do this by adding a pre-amp, booster, distortion pedal, channel of a mixer, etc... before that input. you may also want to boost the output depending on your intentions. its made with hand matched germanium diodes for minimal signal bleed which i also matched between each of the two units inside. the transformers on the input and output will also yield a nice thick organic distortion when over-driven.'"

1967 Raven Piano Bass

via craigslist

"The Raven Piano Bass is monophonic keyboard with high-note priority. That means it will only play one note at a time, and if you press more than one key, only the highest one sounds. This can be problematic if you play legato (not fully releasing one key before going to the next). The Sustain/Percuss tab functions like this: Switched to "Sustain", it plays like a regular organ - press a key and it sounds continuously until you release it. Switched to "Percuss", it plays like a piano. Press and hold a key, and the sound dies out; how fast depends on the setting of the Decay Slow/Fast tab. The Bass Booster, Mellow/Bright and Fuzz tabs do what you'd expect."

20 One Band Modular Vocoder

YouTube via 7thDanSound | November 15, 2010

"Vocoders are complex machines but working with a simple principle. They take two inputs, put them through filterbanks and apply the envelopes of one input and applies it on the amplitude of the other. Thus the frequency spectrum of one signal is imparted on the other but only if that signal contains those frequencies. Usually vocoders sport filterbanks with at least 10 filters in each, expensive if you want to do it with a modular. This demo shows that you can make quite an efficient vocoder using just one filter each for carrier and modulator!"

TouchOSC iPad Template for the Rhodes Chroma

Rhodes Chroma TouchOSC Editor

YouTube via matrixsynth | November 21, 2010 |

"The Chroma has a slightly, conceptually different architecture than most analog poly synths. On most you have two oscillators that are routed through a filter with shared modulation sources such as envelopes and LFOs. On the Chroma, each of two oscillators, Wave A and Wave B have corresponding filters, Filter A and Filter B, LFOs called Sweep A and B, and so on. The routing is not fixed and is very flexible, meaning you can use modulation sources on B with A and vice versa. There is too much to go into here, so check out the excellent Rhodes Chroma site for more: http://rhodeschroma.com/.

As for this video, the Chroma starts with an initialized patch which only has one "Wave/Patch" active. In the beginning I adjust the pitch for Wave A which is active. I then show Wave B is inactive by attempting to adjust its pitch which does nothing. I then enable Wave B followed by applying various modulations to filter and pitch for both. This video is not a performance and is only meant to show a little of what the Rhodes Chroma TouchOSC editor is capable of." See the screens above for reference. Below is a shot of the iPad on top of the Chroma.

Update: see this post for an editor that does not require The Missing Link.

For The Missing Link you can find templates here. One is for TouchOSC and one is for OSCulator.

For those new to TouchOSC and OSCulator, TouchOSC provides a JazzMutant Lemur-like control interface that is completely configurable. You can read more about it on hexler.net here. TouchOSC only transmits Open Sound Control messages. To translate these messages to MIDI CC you need something like OSCulator.

The two templates in the share above are for TouchOSC and OSCulator. For TouchOSC you just need to drop the mapping in the templates folder and sync to your iPad. You can then select the mapping. For OSCulator, you just need to open the template, click on the Settings icon and set it to use whatever MIDI out you plan to hook into your Chroma. Note you do need the CC+ upgrade on your Chroma with MIDI set for Expanded Mode MCM.

The screens show all editable parameters of the Rhodes Chroma. If you have a Chroma, you owe it to yourself to check out the Rhodes Chroma website and join the email list.

Maplin 5600S Stereo Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

"An absolute MONSTER of a full pinpatch Quad Oscillator modular Analog Synthesizer, that has had a lot of TLC..."

Update: more pics and info:

"This auction also includes all original manuals and the very rare original Demo Cassette...

One of the real strengths of this synth are its very wide ranging oscillators.... Footage ranges in seven stages from 32foot to 1/2foot ... AND! they can also be switched into LOW mode and be used as a control voltage source effectively giving you another LFO for every single oscillator. Five waveforms, plus pulse width modulation!! each oscillator can be also be synced to oscillator 1.

With a total of four Oscillators plus an additional independent LFO on the synth, all I can say is WOW!! that is one heck of a FAT sound when you stack them all together. absolutely blows the socks off Moog synths from the same period.

The oscillators are coupled directly to three totally independent oscillator mixers.... so you can have three entirely different oscillator mixes available at all times..... amazing stuff when you start panning that around the Stereo Mix, and you can do that on this synth using voltage control.

Another two mixers (number 4 and 5) allow either mixing of audio signals or mixing of control voltages. In the same section as those two mixers are the synths filters... And they are a real powerhouse. With switchable ranges at 12db per Octave and 24db per Octave, tunable.... they can deliver earth shattering bass... as well as being able to self resonate for those classic synth twangs and squeaks......

Envelope generators..... How many do you want? unlike most analog synths which only have one, the Maplin has three totally independent EG sections.... One has a built in amp VCA for audio signals and the other two output control signals that can be used to modulate or control any other part of the audio or signal chain. Including two further independent audio amps. Way too many features to list here.......

The Joystick controller... way more than you might expect from this little device. Far from being just a pitch and modulation bender, like on modern synths, this little beauty can be patched to control almost any part of the signal or control chain. Meaning that you could for example have it controlling the cutoff point of a filter or the time delay of an EG or the frequency of an oscillator or the level of the built in reverb."

The End of JazzMutant and the Lemur

via JazzMutant
"Since 2002, JazzMutant has been a acknowledged pioneer in the field of Creative Computing and Multi-touch technology, being the first-ever company to develop and bring to the market a product featuring a multi-touch screen as early as 2005. Since its market launch, the Lemur has been endorsed by a fascinating community of music and video artists. Nine Inch Nails, Richard Devine, Hot Chip, Ritchie Hawtin, Matthew Herbert, M.I.A, Mike Relm, Alva Noto, Ryuchi Sakamoto, Daft Punk, Bjork, ... : The list of prestigious and influent artists who have made the Lemur their favorite pet companion on stage would be way too long to be mentioned here. Its visionary concept and groundbreaking technologies allowed the Lemur to win numerous international press awards and was recently elected "Innovation of the decade" by Future Music.

During five years and despite the new fever surrounding touch technologies, the Lemur remained the only Multi-touch device capable to meet the needs of creative people. From now on, this ecosystem is evolving quickly : powerful consumer tablet devices are becoming mainstream, bringing the power of multi-touch to everyone. In the meantime, JazzMutant, renamed Stantum in 2007, has become a technology-centric company and developed partnerships with tier-one industrial partners to speed up this democratization. As a result, the need for a high-end dedicated hardware is doomed to vanish in the near future. This is why Stantum is announcing today that it will close its JazzMutant activity unit and stop selling its legendary Lemur Multi-touch hardware controller at the end of December while the stock lasts! The last batch of Lemurs just came out of the factory. These very last units are now available at a special discounted price from JazzMutant's webstore and from its authorized distributors and retailers. These very last units are now available with 25% discount! Moreover, the Dexter App and an original Lemur T-shirt will come along for free. Don't miss this last opportunity and grab the legendary Lemur from authorized retailers while the stock last! The Technical support and after sale service will be handled until December 31, 2011. The jazzmutant website will stay online in order to let the user community access support resources and share their projects.

We would like to thank all the people involved in this fantastic adventure: first of all the user community which exceeded our wildest expectations in creating the most amazing templates; our devoted resellers, who helped us to show the Lemurs all over the world; finally music software editors for their support."

"Song title: Chamber 5

Gear used: Elektron Machinedrum UW, Dave Smith Prophet 08, Moog Little Phatty, Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb, Line 6 Modular delay, Mackie 1402, Ableton.

Earlier this year I decided to overhaul my studio. There were a few reasons I did this:

1) I am an internet addict. I often found that when I was working on music on my laptop that I would suddenly be tempted to open facebook or my email and next thing you know I would be watching talking cat videos for the next hour.

2) Tactility. In this day and age of virtual existence, I find myself really needing more hands-on experiences. I grew up playing guitar and so this gave me the ability to return to a more traditional way of working with music.

3) Hardware has limitations. The problem with using software synths is that you tend to have an unlimited supply of them and so it's really hard to limit yourself to one or two and just learn them inside out. I wanted to give myself limitations and so I picked a few piieces of gear and really spent alot of time trying to get the most out of them.

4) Live PAs. In this day and age EVERYONE and their grandmother is a dj. Most people have access to the same music and it's not rare to see an opener and a headliner playing 90% of the same music. I really believe that live PAs will be way of the future for producers that want to provide a unique, ever-changing experience for people that come to see them. This setup, as you will see, lends itself to live reproductions."
