Rare MFB POLYLITE ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

via this auction
"This is the monstrous 4-times Version of the MFB SynLite and sounds awesome!

* 4 complete voices of MFB-SYNTH LITE II
* 2 saw tooth/square oscillators
* 1 square sub-oscillator
* ring modulation und oscillator sync
* 2 envelope generators (ADS/R)
* voltage controlled 24 dB low-pass filter
* 100 user memories

The MFB-POLYLITE is a MIDI-controlled four-voice desktop synthesizer. Each of its four voices offers three flexible digital oscillators, analogue 24 dB low-pass filtering (VCF) as well as an analogue amplifier (VCA). The MFB-POLYLITE offers 100 memory locations for total recall (except Tune). Editing is done by standard MIDI controllers, a free Editor software or, ideally, a MFB-SYNTH LITE II since the MFB-POLYLITE has no controls by itself.

Both main oscillators offer switchable square and saw tooth waveforms (the saw tooth was improved), as well as ring modulation for OSC 1 and an impulse waveform for OSC 2. In addition OSC 2 can be hard synced to OSC 1, too. The octave range is switchable between 4’, 8’ and 16’ with an additional detuning range of plus minus one octave for OSC 2. The sub oscillator is fixed to 32’ and uses a square wave that can be controlled in level and fine tuning. The filter is an approved 24 dB low-pass design with resonance up to self-oscillation – its cutoff frequency can be modulated by different sources. VCF and VCA offer individual envelope generators with Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release parameters. Decay and Release either share a single control or, alternatively, Release may be switched off. Further modulations are performed by an LFO with One-Shot function. The LFO addresses oscillator pitch, pulse width or cutoff frequency.

Glides between legato played notes can be performed in three speeds.

MIDI-data processed are Note-On/Off, Pitch Wheel (plus minus 2 semitones), Mod-Wheel and additional Controller Data; Note Velocity can control the VCF as well as the VCA."

"A short demo video on the Wobbulator. It was originally made in the 1970's by Nam June Paik and video engineer Shuya Abe. I was curious why there wasn't a lot of information out there concerning it since it's such a great piece of equipment.

There is a great detailed writeup with wiring diagrams on the Experimental Television Center's website: experimentaltvcenter.org/history/tools/ttool.php3?id=28&page=1"

Wiard 300 Series 352 Borg Filters

via this auction

"300 SERIES DUAL MULTIMODE VCF/VCA VACTROL BASED MODULE

The Borg uses a completly new filter design using “Vactrol”-based electronics. There are two seperate filters in this module -- each implemented as a 2-pole multi-mode. They can be linked as a 4-pole, or used as two independent filters. The Vactrol circuitry provides a certain amount of slew, giving the filter a very woody and warm tone.

The Borg also contains two LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators). Low frequency might be a misnomer, since the oscillators will track to a 15 Khz audio rate. These two oscillators can be used for filter modulation, or for clocking of a Sequantizer, vibrato on a Classic VCO and wave sequencing of a Waveform City.

Styx Oberheim 4 Voice Up for Auction?

via this auction

Note the following description and all descriptions are from the seller and not MATRIXSYNTH.

"I have been the proud owner since 1978 of one of the original Oberheim 4 Voices used by Styx. Growing up in Chicago, A musical friend of mine was good friends with one of the rodies from Styx. It was my understanding back then that Dennis DeYoung put this 4 Voice on the side and either purchased or received 2 of the new 4 Voices with the programmers built sometime in 1976. I had heard about this one through my friend and was able to purchase it in 1978. I have been the owner ever since.It is my understanding now that the original models with the sequencers build in, have become the rare finds with these units. Because much fewer of them were actually built this way.

I unfortunately do not know the history of this particular unit as far as if it was used to record any tracks in the albums Equinox (1975), Crystal Ball (1976) or The Grand Illusion (1977), but I would think it had usage on some of the songs on these albums and I was told at the time this was on the road mostly.

The inside is in near perfect condition and can’t be told from new. The graphics on the panels inside are all in perfect condition. The keyboard is in perfect working order and all functions work as new. Cosmetically it is only missing is 4 caps on the top of 4 knobs, I would think these would be available at any electronics surplus store. I have also found that the number 4 LED on the right sequencer does not light but the sequencers work perfectly. I would asume an easy fix by just replacing the LED. As with all analog Oberheims, it take about 20 minutes to “warm up” for the voltage to stabilize and the 4 SEM’s (Synthesizer Expander Modules) to become stable to stay in tune.

I have left the outside case and covering of the unit original from its history, including scratches, mares and cover wear on 2 corners (That someone used markers on to cover up) to preserve its history. Although the covering shows some wear from being on the road, the actual wooden box and framework underneath is in excellent condition.

The Styx logo is painted on the top half, front of the case and was whiter when I purchased it and has yellowed over the years.

This Oberheim is serial number 049. The best information I have is that it was built around the end of 1974 or the beginning of 1975.

All 4 SEM’s were just serviced by Three Wave Music. The keyboard has all new keyboard bushings and the contacts have been cleaned and serviced. The unit has been always kept indoors in a temperature controlled environment and has no corrosion, which can be a problem with these old synths.

Synthfest@Maker Faire 2011 / March 12-13 2011

"The Centre for Life in Newcastle (http://www.life.org.uk) is hosting the Maker Faire in 2011. Maker Faire,
which takes place over the weekend of March 12-13, is an event created by
Make Magazine to celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and
the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset.

In the past, there have been one or two projects involving electronic music
and synth DIY though they've been few and far between. However, next year's
event will have a very strong synth DIY flavour and Saturday 12th March has
been designated "SynthFest Day". We're now recruiting artists and companies
who would like to get involved.

Contributors are invited to bring along DIY instruments for the public to
see and use. We're also looking at setting up a performance area so that
artists can either perform a small concert or participate in a collaborative
jam.

My understanding is that contributors don't pay to hire space and they are
able to sell merchandise i.e. instruments, CD, DVDs etc.

The event should be a terrific showcase and, with the backing of Life, the
promotional opportunities should be superb. If successful, there is the
possibility that this could become an annual event.

We'd love to have you involved so please register your interest at :
www.MakerFaireUK.com

The deadline for applications is 26th November 2010.

Best regards
Synth Builder"
