Grendel Drone Commander Analog Mono Synth

via this auction
"very unique modern analog monosynth, the Grendel Drone Commander by Eric Archer. Lacking voltage control of oscillators or gate, this synth is designed for one thing, and one thing alone: analog drones. And it does them very, very well.

With a total of 9 knobs, the Drone Commander offers two manually-tuned oscillators and two LFOs, plus an unusually colorful and nasty filter. LFO1 is an analog variable-shape oscillator, and LFO2 is a pulse waveform that auto-synchronizes to LFO1 at a ratio of 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Both LFOs can be routed to the filter for rhythmic patterns. A line-level output jack is provided for connection to amplifiers or effects.

The sound samples on this page are recorded with one Drone Commander plugged straight into a Fender Princeton Chorus.

Six of the Drone Commander’s nine knobs double as push-pull switches to control signal routing and waveform selection. Scroll to the bottom of this page to view the control layout.

red panel, black text, black plastic knobs
natural panel, black text, natural aluminum knobs
gold panel, black text, gold “marshall” knobs
black panel, no text, black aluminum knobs

The Drone Commander is housed in a dark green military ammunition case with engraved aluminum control panel. The case is welded steel with an easily removable, rubber gasketed lid. There is almost no plastic in the drone commander! It measures 10″(w) x 7″(h) x 3.5″(d), and weighs about 6 lbs.

The unit is powered by a 9V battery accessible through a slide-out drawer in the side, as well as a 9VDC adapter.

Filter CV input (0-10V) and clock pulse output (+8V) are now standard features."

See http://ericarcher.net/devices/drone-commander/ for samples and more. Video previously posted here.

Dave Smith Mono Evolver Keyboard

via this auction

"The four oscillators all sound great. The analog oscillators are warm, with great sync and PWM effects. The digital oscillators are incredibly thick sounding -- they are 12 bit waveforms, and can sound tough, or very very warm when the analog filter is closed a little bit. And nothing at all compares to sequencing the digital waveforms from the internal sequencers. When combined with ring modulation and cross-oscillator frequency modulation, you have sounds that no other synth can possibly make.

One of the most amazing (and under appreciated) aspects of this synth is the analog filter and the tricks it can do. Two stand out: Audio Mod of the filter, and Lowpass split. Audio Mod allows the analog oscillators to modulate the cutoff frequency of the filter. This gives a really warm sound, which sounds fantastic when you set the filter and oscillators to the right frequencies. It really gives a new level of animation to the sound. The other secret, Lowpass split, allows the synth to sound like two different synths at once. It splits the lowpass filter, so that they cutoff two different frequencies. It really sounds like you have two sounds going, for example a lead and a bassline. This sounds incredible, and unbelievably it works even when you are running the whole synth from the same monophonic sequence. This is a trick no Evolver user should neglect."

Pittsburgh Modular Timetable Demo

YouTube via amphonic | November 23, 2010 |

"This is a demo of the Pittsburgh Modular Timetable module. A combination of a basic clock divider and a voltage controlled pattern generator. The Timetable produces even divisions of the input signal and patterns that range from the simple to the convoluted.

In the video, the Timetable is generating the pattern that is triggering all the sounds.

"The Bleep Seq" a crazy 4 step sequencer

"Finally the return of a sequencer by Punksynth. We used to build a different version of this around a year ago. It was a great seller they have been sold all around the world.

We are now Introducing the Punksynth Bleep Seq. There are 4 steps to this wonderful sequencer. Each step can be turned off or on with the huge blue LED buttons that you see on the front. The jacks at the top enable you to select between a 2, 3, or 4 step pattern. Right above the blue LED pushbuttons are the pitch knobs for each step. Then above that from left to right you have clock speed, volume and pulse width knobs. There is a 1/4 inch output jack for the audio out. You also have a 1/4 input if you choose to use an external clock. That being said there is an internal clock if you prefer that. It gets its power from a negative tipped 9V AC adapter that is not included."

"the technological terror is a one-off, cmos-based, digital synth. there are nine patchable modules that include a number of single oscillators, a dual input oscillator, two synchronized oscillators, a 4-stage shift register (summed output), a resonant low-pass filter, simple arpeggiator, two external inputs (one for low level instruments [e.g. guitar, microphone, etc] and one for other square wave devices like atari punk consoles and photo-theremins), a 4-channel mixer, and a master ouput/volume.

this clip demonstrates the 4 of the 6 single oscillators, the dual input oscillator, the two sync'd oscillators, and the 4-channel mixer.

no external effects were used. output goes directly into a roland 15x cube practice amp."

In this piece, the cello provides proportional voltages which control various modules of the EMS Synthi E and at the same time is being filtered through it.
Throughout the recording the cello is also mixed with the Synthi E in real time.
