VTS 01 1 - Hammond Novachord Video

YouTube via Screenery | November 30, 2010

via Mitch on the AH list:
"If any of you know of people other than Cantos, Audities, and Phil Cirroco, who have taken on a Novachord restoration, i would love to get their name. Or even if you know people you could recommend who haven't attempted a Novachord restoration but who you think would be capable doing an excellent internal restoration job on one, I would be greatly appreciative (especially if they are in Los Angeles)."

If you can help feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email and I will forward it to Mitch.

Cwejman Modules for Sale

via these auctions:

Cwejman VCO-2RM Dual Oscillator with Ring Modulator
"The Oscillators are the main sound sources of the instrument. VC0-2RM is equipped with seven waveforms, LFO mode, sync and waveform outputs are routed to a DC coupled ring modulator (RM). The oscillator's frequency is controlled by COARSE, TUNE knobs and FM inputs. TUNE finetunes the oscillators (± 6 semitones).

Frequency modulation (leveled FM1, FM2 and FM3 ) determinates the intensity of frequency modulation and/or pitch control. All FM inputs are carefully calibrated for 1Volt/octave sensitivity. Frequency modulation, by an audio signal, creates so called "side-bands" that consist of sum and difference of signals frequencies.
These additional frequencies do mostly have a non harmonic sound. Modulation, by low periodic waveforms, such as LFO or envelope generator creates momentary pitch shift of modulated oscillator common named vibrato (by LFO) or pitch bend (by envelope generator).
SYNC means that sync'ed oscillators frequency is tracked by the frequency of controlling oscillator;
OSC2's frequency is syncronized to OSC1's frequency. When the tuned frequency of sync-ed oscillator has the same or multiple of frequency of controlling oscillator then sync-ed oscillators waveform has no or very little "glitch" which results in a sync-ed smooth waveform (sinus waveform). The sync-ed waveforms (with additional FM modulation) are perfect for cutting edge lead sound and hard, funky basses.
PULSE WIDTH % adjusts the pulse width of the pulse wave from 5% to 95%.
WAVEFORM selects the waveform or a mix of waveforms from an oscillator. PULSE WIDTH control works also on the waveform mixes where the pulse wave is included.
Ring modulator (RM) is a classic audio effect device and due to the non harmonic character of the output signal, very useful to create metallic timbres such as bells, sweeping whistles and percussive sounds and tremolo effects (modulated by low periodic signal like a LFO). Two input signals are pre-patched to OSC1 and OSC2 outputs. Using the inputs X and Y, any other external signal can be routed directly into the ring modulator. As modulation source the ring modulator can produce a huge amount of complex waveforms both in the low and audio frequency range."

Cwejman AP-1 Audio Processor
"The AP-1 consist of three parts;
Microphone/Instrument amplifier
Envelope follower
Opto compressor

Preamp section
The preamp section consist of a low noise /high speed gain booster for signals to an adequate level for the opto compressor. Two audio inputs are accessible; the mic input provided by a balanced XLR socket and instrument input provided by 1/4 '' single ended socket. The mic input can be powered by the phantom voltage (48 Volts) for driving condenser microphones. The mic amplifiers wide gain range (from 1 to 71 dB) is ideal for amplification of week signals (ribbon microphones and dynamic microphones) and a high output level condenser microphones. The instrument amplifier has 6 dB lower gain range than the microphone amplifier and it's ideal for amplification of signals from high impedance sources, such as guitar pick-ups, piezo-transducers and other weak to moderate level signal sources.

Envelope Follower/Opto Compressor

The Envelope Follower extracts the amplitude of amplified signal to DC signal as CV for control of opto compressor. The Envelope follower has three controllable (manually and by dedicated CV inputs) parameters; Attack Time, Release Time and selectable input high- and low pass filter.

The Opto Compressor is build around an opto-electric device and low noise /high speed gain booster (pro-audio, j-fet op-amp for both instrument amplifier and compressor). The gain reduction is controlled by an extracted DC signal from the Envelope Follower. The amount of compression is controlled by the strength of input signal, gradually from soft compression (soft knee) to limiting for high level input signals. The opto compressor is completed with 15dB make-up gain. The Compressor's side-chain is coupled to the envelope followers input filter in purpose to make compression less sensitive to filtered signals by the envelope filter."

Cwejman FSH-1 Frequency Shifter
"the quadrature carrier oscillator in the cwejman fsh-1 frequency shifter is a pure analogue voltage-controlled generator. this results in the output of a pure sine tone with thd less than 0.1% in the entire frequency range.

the main purpose with the frequency shifter is to make frequency shift up and down for processed audio signal. two signal sources are needed; the carrier and the audio. both carrier and audio signals are splited in two chains and are pre-processed to accomplish 90 degrees phase shift between splited signals.

the carrier generator has two frequency ranges; lf (low frequency) and audio and it's controlled by knobs coarse, fine and external cv signals (carrier cv). the carrier generators outputs are pure sine waveforms with 90 degrees delay between them.

outputs are patched to both ring modulators inputs. two ring modulators (dual balanced multipliers) receives 0 and 90 degrees shifted carrier and audio signals . the outputs from the multipliers are combined in two ways; the frequency shift up and down. the frequency shifted audio signal is a sum (up) or difference (down) of the carrier generators frequency (a pure sine waveform) and all audio signals frequencies (fundamentals and harmonics). the fsh-1 works in two modes; as frequency shifter and as dual ring modulator.

a ring modulator is a classic audio effect device and due to the non-harmonic character of the output signal. it's very useful to create metallic timbres such as bells, sweeping whistles and percussive sounds and tremolo effects. the obvious effect (particularly in lf mode) is a stereo panning effect of audio signal."

Cwejman RG-6 Random Generator
"Generates random control voltage via one of three outputs, low, normal or high. External sample input allows use as sample and hold. Has a sawtooth waveform which is modulated by noise, with voltage control of the slope of the waveform (used in low frequency mode, you can get some interesting effects modulating the slope) there are positive and negative outputs for this waveform. Clock and Gate outputs as well."

part2: some typical Polysix sounds

The Korg Polysix is a very nice analog synths with a great sound. The sound is very different to the Juno synths. The sound-character of the SSM filter, the Effect Sektion with Chorus, Phaser and Ensemble is really fantastic. !!! The internal Ni/Cd accu has a leakage problem and destroy the circuit board. Remove the accu quickly! Check my page for more info."

Junction: New York City Taxis Generate a Real-Time Soundtrack

YouTube via kamoni | November 30, 2010 |

"Junction is a sound sculpture generated in real-time by thousands of New York City taxi cabs. Through the use of publicly available live footage from New York's Traffic Management Center, Junction tracks the movements of taxis in some of the city's busiest intersections. It uses their position, velocity and overall density to synthesize sounds. The onlooker gains a feeling of omniscience, as if "watching from above", while every tracked taxi's indeterministic movements become part of a larger symphony."

Component C29 is backwards on all TB-303's?

Interesting bit from bcbox on the adafruit (x0xb0x) forums:
"I found something very interesting... ok interesting to me at least! I recently stripped down an entire TB-303 mainboard I was doing some work on. When I got around to re-stuffing the PCB I found something curious. The legend for component C29 is backwards on the PCB, and in fact the component is installed backwards versus the schematic. I have verified this with pics from the dozens of 303's I have worked on, a few of which I show in some pics below...

The x0xb0x PCB is laid out the correct way, which would be like the schematic, so C29 is backwards versus an actual 303. This component is part of the circuit that makes up the recovery stage at the output of the filter responsible for converting the two outputs from the ladder to the single ended output at C14.
I also recorded some samples with C29 in both orientations. In each sample the first 2 bars is C29 as per actual TB-303, and the last 2 bars is C29 as per schematic."

Ableton Live Tutorial: Dubstep Talking Wobble Bass w/ Operator

YouTube via DubSpot | November 30, 2010 | 3 likes, 0 dislikes

http://blog.dubspot.com/ableton-live-...

"Ableton Certified Trainer and Dubspot Instructor Michael Hatsis aka !banginclude explains how to make 'dubstep talking wobble bass' in Ableton Live using Operator (If you don't already own Operator, check out the tutorial video Dubstep Wobble Bass Part 1 in which Hatsis used the sampler to create the mid-range bass sound and load up that preset.) Starting with the Operator sound he created in the previous video tutorial Dubstep Wobble Bass Part 2, and using the patch as a launching point, he turns off Operators B, C, and D and keeps Operator A on a square-wave, sets the LFO rate to a 1/2 a bar, and switch up the Filter resonance to 5, which gives us a somewhat mild whomp bass sound. To add the talking effect, Hatsis used Ableton Live device Redux effect to bring the sample-rate down a few levels, set the Downsample to Hard, somewhere between 15 to 24 to get the talking sound. As the LFO sweeps through the Filter's frequency, the Redux adds a vocal effect to the wobble, and as you increase the value of the Downsample, the deeper and heavier the voice gets; as you decrease, the voice gets lighter. The technique known as "digital downsampling." Hatsis returns Operator to add a little FM/make the sound grittier by turning on Operator B. Be aware of the odd effects, as the Redux plugin enhances the grittiness of the FM. Furthermore, Hatsis demonstrates other effects within Operator including Coarse value, LFO rate, and Filter settings and options, frequencies, resonance, and recaps the steps and methods at the end."

iPads on Amazon

Note: So why did this get the Featured label? Because we are getting very close to the iPad becoming a ubiquitous synth device. Some might say we are already there. Once a wireless MIDI hub becomes available it will pretty much be done. Next step after that will be more processing power and MIDI syncing between apps, but not sure if Apple will allow that. Anyone know if CoreMIDI supports this? Basically an internal MIDI clock for apps running on the device to sync to?
