Rhythm Core Alpha, International Release!

See the video here
"Rhythm Core AlphaTM is the most advanced, easiest to use music cre- ation system for the Nintendo DSi. It’s advanced DRUM GRID and NOTE GRID allow rhythm loops, basslines, and melodies to be created simply by tapping spots on the screen. You can see all the parts at once, making it much easier and faster to get your beats down.

It also has a unique 2D SOLO MODE, which lets you play sound live with the Nintendo DSi stylus. This mode’s 2d grid makes the largest number of notes available at once, making it easy to play real melodies.

Finally, the PATTERN SCREEN ties it all together, allowing the beats and chord changes to be ar- ranged into complete songs.

Not only does Rhythm Core AlphaTM have the easiest and most powerful sequencing on the Nintendo DSi, but Rhythm Core AlphaTM also does things no other music program will do. It recog- nizes the key and scale of the music you have created, and allows you to
change key easily with the +Control Pad. You can also sequence those changes in the PATTERN SCREEN. Nothing else does this.

Patterns can contain many loops that you can also select with the Nintendo DSi’s buttons, allowing you to change your beat or chord progression when- ever you want. Nothing else does this.

Finally, the SOLO MODE only shows notes that match the key and scale of the music you have sequenced, making it impossible to hit a wrong note. Nothing else does this.

Rhythm Core AlphaTM comes with nearly 300 built-in sounds, including synth sounds, orchestral sounds, rock sounds, and even old computer and video game (chipmusic) sounds. Furthermore, it al- lows the sounds to be customized with an adjustable ADSR envelope, and now with a powerful multi- waveform vibrato feature that is new to this release!

Numerous features have been added for this release, including not just the Vibrato, but also live recording of your solos directly into instrument tracks, live recording of your block and key changes into patterns, and enhanced pattern editing. This makes it not only the fastest program for sequenc- ing, but also a great tool for live performance. You can actually build an entire song live, in front of an audience! You can change the key of the music you sequenced with the +Control Pad or face buttons, like fingering a guitar, while soloing with the Nintendo DSi stylus using your other hand. Or you can sequence all of the chord changes in the pattern mode and concentrate more on your soloing.

We are pleased to announce that no changes have been made to the graphics in the program at all for this release. It is ugly because it is pow- erful, and we haven’t wasted any time or system resources on making it pretty. Rhythm Core Alpha presents you with as many controls as we could cram onto the Nintendo DSi’s two screens, which may overwhelm some, but gives the most power to the user. We consider this a profes- sional music tool, and think that it is a mistake to dumb down programs for the perceived “general audience”. Rhythm Core AlphaTM is the most advanced music program on the Nintendo DSi.

"Serial Number is 1002."

Update via pinkster in the comments: "had one of these in the mid 70's, this may well be the coolest feckin' pedal of all time. lucky enough to have found one via a friend, who's had it in his garage for the last 30 years, pick it up next week. this isn't a synthesizer or a guitar effect, it was meant as an interface unit to process audio thru the control voltage inputs on classic analog synths...you could put vocals, drums, sax, damn near anything thru it and process to your heart's content. luckily for guitarists, it is very guitar friendly...but sadly few specimens exist anymore, most were shipped to school electronic music programs in the late 60's and sadly many were discarded. while they are well worth the price when you can find one, don't expect it to be more than what it is. it features wah, pedal controlled formants, phasing, fuzz and a hefty preamp among other interesting and uncommon sounds. caveats are the mushroom shaped footswitches are impossible to find, however they can be repaired with modern dpdt or 3pdt footswitches. if you can find one, it's not hype, it is absolutely the coolest effect unit possibly ever produced. pink jimi photon"

Update 11/18/22 via pinkster in the comments
" hi guys,
as it turned out, my friend had MY original pII, and i have re-aquired it.

that said, myself, r.g. keene, dino and brian from the diystompboxes forum have CLONED the pII, the first working prototype is working, and the first set of boards has been ordered.
soon, any diy'er handy with a soldering iron can build their own for their private use. the entire project is available on r.g.'s geofex.com website, so get them guns warmed up and whip out the credit card...as in addition to cloning (and a LOT of the info on the schems was wrong compared to the three units me and dino came up with) we've updated to more modern parts where applicable, and it sounds dead on like the originals...i highly reccomend this project to interested parties, looking at about 100$ american for the parts.
peace

Phir Mile Sur & the Haken Continuum - Interview with Mr. Lippold Haken

YouTube via zoomdekho | February 03, 2010 |

"Phir Mile Sur Iconic Song Back After 22 years"

via Business of Music in India where you'll find the full interview.

"The first thought that came to mind when I heard the end portion of the song “Rehna Tu” in the film Delhi-6 was – ‘which software sample has Rahman used?’ But soon the word spread that he has bought a new keyboard called “Continuum”. And finally, in the video of the much-publicized “Phir Mile Sur”, the common man saw him play it.

I interviewed Mr. Lippold Haken, the professor who built this new device – which is well, not a keyboard, but a new instrument. A musical background together with an engineering education allowed him to create the Continuum Fingerboard. (The name comes from continuous pitch, pressure, and front-back position tracking for each finger.)"

The Performance Music Systems Syntar II

Pics of the Syntar II prototype. This is a follow-up to my last post from my recent visit to George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular.

The Syntar II never made it past the prototype stage. The first Syntar was the first synthesizer enclosed in a keytar case. Previously only remote controllers for external synths existed. See this post from 2006 for interesting background of The Syntar including Bob Moog. Also check out The Syntar on Carbon111. See the Syntar label for more.

Key features of the Syntar II:
"It had two full ADSR's. It was polyphonic in the sense that the entire keyboard was connected to two, parallel banks of top octave dividers that could be slightly detuned for a phase roll in addition to the two VCO's. The polyphonic board worked but, I couldn't squeeze it into the case. The VCO's had a hard sync. The filter had VC resonance and a mode switch above the filter that let you go continuously either from LP-BP-HP, LP-Band reject-HP or, LP-notch-HP. It also incorporated an internal digital delay."

Unfortunately the Syntar 2 never made it beyond the prototype stage and is beyond salvation. Fortunately, a part of it will live on. According to George Mattson: "I'm going to be pulling out all of the hand-made boards and turning them into modules. It was made with Curtis CEM chips.

Those modules will be built into cabinets that will hang on the side of the sequencer. I'll put 'em to work." See this post for reference. I have some exclusive pics of the refurbishment in progress and will post them in time.
