Testing the C951 COTK Arpeggiator

YouTube via georgmahr | January 25, 2011 |
http://www.cluboftheknobs.com/
"Keying in notes into the arpeggiator´s buffer, then modifying the sequence with the 'stretcch-control' knob, sorry for the sound distortion, the audio level was a bit too much for the built in mike."
"This is a stability and performance test run of the new C951 Arpeggiator (white) . The buffer is big enoung, so I played the notes of three different chords one after the other. This harmonic change can be heard when going through the whole sequence. The intention of the video is not focussed on the C951, but rather shows a complete overview of the system we are using."

Site Updates

It's clean-up time. You might notice the top site menu shrunk. The Featured, Exclusive, and Polls links have moved to the right under MORE STUFF | OTHER. The NAMM link is to the right of the new Oberheim link. Don't worry, the SYNTH BABES label is safe for now, although SYNTH FEMMES was briefly considered. The eBay links on the right will get consolidated as well. All done for now. New posts coming up.

micronaut - experiment one

YouTube via Cranda11 | January 26, 2011

Having a bit of fun with the new equipment set-up, and trying to get a feel for the workflow. This piece is entirely sequenced from an Apply //e and Roland CMU-800R. I'm recording in to Ableton Live, but there are no samples or pre-recording. This track is 100% live.

The quick arpeggio sound, drums, and 16th note pulse are coming from the CMU-800R. The low bass note is from a Korg MS20 running through a Roland RE-201 Space Echo, and the main melody sound is coming from the Doepfer modular (in this case a TipTop Audio Z3000 oscillator, plus some Doepfer shit) and running through a Realistic Electronic Reverb and an Eventide TimeFactor. I used a couple instances of Audio Damage Eos for the main reverb inside the DAW, but that's the only computer effect."

"Warning: this a demo of my first few minutes with this perverse, bizarre, and evil instrument. This is not a musical statement.

No, it doesn't sound like a Linndrum, 606, 909, or Machinedrum. And no, it doesn't have gated reverb. If you don't like it then eat shit."

KAWAI DX900 Organ with Teisco 100p Based Synth Section?

via this auction

"KAWAI DX900 organ from the early 80s and it cost was thousands back then. If your in to analogue sounds this is the organ for you, every sound is pure analogue, with digital affecting the next generation of kawai organs (sr range)

It has 3 manuals and the top is based around the tesico 100p synth, its got many features like hold, portamento, brilliance, its got aftertouch on the topmanual, which allows note bending, growl, vibrato,

For the main manuals, theres a full set of drawbars for the top including percussion , for the bottom full set minus 16, 5.13, and 2 drawbars for the pedals, this organ has a real leslie and vibrato built in too with its own internal amp and speakers.

The string sounds are totaly unique just pure kawai, they can be mixed with all drawbar sounds, and theres also a bank of sounds with piano, they really dont sound like pianos etc but are totaly unique to this instrument, it also has vocal sounds too which are amazing

The drum machine is preset witll four drumbreaks totally analogue (sounds really great) with full tempo control, its got an arpegiater and auto bass features too.

Heres a link from the organist andrew gilbert playing it back then as a real organ, (scroll down to see clips)"

52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 45: Subtractor Filters and Envelopes

YouTube via PropellerheadSW | January 26, 2011 |

"In the second installment of my "Synth School" series I'll be staying on the Subtractor synth but looking at the Filter sections, Amp Envelope, Filter Envelope, and Mod Envelope sections. The masters of synth production are masters of these tools. Something as simple as a Low Pass filter when paired with the right chord progression can lift the entire club crowd into a frenzy. The proper Amp Envelope can bring out the vibe in your song. These are powerful tools to conveying and even evoking strong emotion from what sometimes are rather sterile starting melodies or chords.

As always, I encourage you to play around with them on your own to get a feel for how they behave and interact with each other but today I'll walk you through each slider and button and show you a little of my own experimentation."

"Hej Casanova" - with Roland SH-2000

YouTube via organfairy | January 26, 2011 |

"'Hey Casanova
close down your business
go somewhere else
and stop stealing my girlfriends'

This is basically what this song is about. It was a moderate hit for the Danish dance band Klaus & Servants in 1978.

After making several videos with multitrack or MIDI music I thought it was about time to just sit down and play with nothing more than what I can do in real-time. The music is recorded directly from the organ and the only trick I have used is to stop playing when I moved the camera for a close-up of the synthesizer and back again. These breaks were edited out later.

I play the Technics SX-C600 organ and on top of it a Roland SH-2000 synthesizer. This was actually the way it was designed to be played: On top of an organ as an external third keyboard - or solo manual."

Synare Lo Tom Analog Synth Drum

via this auction
"vintage Synare Lo Tom drum synth made by Star Instruments in the early 80s in as-is condition.

The Synare Lo Tom produces a low-pitched drum synth sound that can be tuned and decay time can be adjusted. There are Range, Speed, and Direction controls included within the “Run” section of the controls that don’t appear to do anything and cannot verify that they are working as intended. There are additional ¼” jacks in addition to the ¼” output that may be for a footswitch on/off for the “Run” section, but am uncertain and therefore selling the drum synth as-is.

· Tune
· Range
· Speed
· Direction
· Decay
· Sensitivity (Trigger)
· Volume
· Power Adapter Input (included)

"The OB-Mx is a modern synthesizer with an entirely analog audio path. It has an intuitive interface making it easy to program some unique sounds. You can get some great classic Oberheim and Minimoog sounds out of this thing, and it is completely programmable and MIDI compatible. This is one of the only real analog synths with modern features. It has one 2-voice card that contains two oscillators, four multistage envelopes, three LFOs and filters. You can upgrade the unit and add up to 5 more cards to get even more polyphony. This is the standard factory-issued 2-voice unit."
