Vintage 1982 Korg Trident MkII Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"In 1981 Korg introduced the Trident, a monster of an analog synthesizer combining a programmable 8-voice polysynth (the guts of which were later stripped down and repackaged as the Korg Polysix), a dedicated Brass synth, and a String synth all in one single keyboard instrument. The original Trident's programmable synth section sounded great thanks to its combination of 16 discrete VCOs (a rarity among polysynths, think Jupiter-8!) coupled to 8-channels of SSM2044 VCFs (the same warm, liquid filters used in the Fairlight CMI, PPG Wave 2.3, and Voyetra Eight). The dedicated String section has it's own 3-stage analog BBD chorus effect similar to those in 70s string ensemble keyboards, and when layered on top of the synth and brass sections makes for a huge sound. Lastly, a choice of the Synth, Brass, or String sections can be routed through the Trident's onboard analog flanger, based around the same Reticon SAD1024 chip at the heart of some of the most highly revered vintage flangers. Many people consider the Trident's onboard flanger to be one of the best ever.

All in all, the original Trident had a TON of vintage hardware inside, and a huge price tag to match its huge sound.

But there were limitations: The original Trident's synth section had only 1 envelope generator that had to be shared between the VCF and VCA (like a Roland Juno). Also, there were only 16 programmable memory locations to store your own sounds.

In response, Korg introduced the improved Trident Mk II in 1982. That is the instrument for sale here.

The Trident Mk II adds an additional envelope generator to the synth section dedicated to the VCF, which really opened up the sonic palette. Also, onboard memory was doubled to allow 32 user sounds. Korg also expanded the number of interface jacks on the back for CV and triggering control over the different instrument sections.

These improvements raised the list price of the Trident Mark II to near $6000 in 1982 dollars...that's like nearly $12,000 today! The exorbitant price tag combined with the introduction of the Yamaha DX7 a year later pretty much led to very few Trident MkIIs ever being sold.

That is really a shame, because just as more and more analog synth enthusiasts have rediscovered the truly massive sonic power of the Trident over recent years, there are fewer and fewer of these incredible instruments to go around. And that's just talking about the original Trident...it is even harder to find the Trident MkII."

"Vintage analogue drums with preset and programmable drum sequences. This is the model before the TR-808 and shares some similarities but uses large button matrix to select different preset styles. everything works as it should. this is an old unit and so some discolouration on the case can be seen, along with a couple of tiny marks from use. (see pics for details) one preset button is a little sticky but comes good when used. This CR-8000 (pictured on right) has been heavily modified by a professional musician & veteran synthesizer guy. The work is top grade. mods include tonal mods and trigger/audio out interface, laminated overlay, BD with infinite sustain, overdrive and tuning effects, noise adjust and full control over most of the sound parameters of the machine. Also see: http://soundcloud.com/user7296796 [below] for sound examples of the ACTUAL unit. this is an awesome tweakable analogue drummie with din sync 24 input/output. another interfacing unit (pictured on left) may be available to the winning bidder by request 240 volt unit"

Yumi, the violin simulator

via hemicube on the Jasuto forum

"Meet Yumi, the violin simulator!

It's a silly name (I like those obviously) meaning 'bow' in Japanese...

So this is sorta the first thing that's been built with the new Jasuto Studio framework, the sound quality is amazing and absolutely no samples are used. It's using a fairly novel approach to achieve synthesis in realtime without aliasing or any sort of digital stepping, and yes it sounds like a true violin or even a cello.

I'm going to make a Youtube video demonstrating the sound quality next...

Also I'm not sure if that's the final UI or not, this app is more about functionality and sound quality. So yeah, I don't wanna give too many details but hopefully in a week or so it'll be out (iPad initially)!

BlowPipes - Scottish Highland Bagpipes for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad

YouTube via tradlessons | February 11, 2011 |

"BlowPipes is the best-sounding and easiest-to-play set of mouth-blown Scottish Highland Bagpipes available for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

The drone and chanter sounds are provided by ePipes in Glasgow, Scotland, and are high quality per-note studio recordings of a world-class set of Great Highland Bagpipes.

Play a melody on the chanter by touching the holes while blowing into the microphone on your device or wired headset.

Touch the drone puck image to switch the drones on and off.

Touch the 'i' icon at the bottom center to bring up the settings page. Here you can adjust the blowing sensitivity as well as the balance between the drones and chanter.

You may also select between Top (iPod Touch 4G, iPad) or Bottom (iPhone) microphone location for your device.

No microphone? No problem! You can also play the chanter without blowing, just set the microphone location selector on the settings page to Off. Play the notes by just touching the chanter holes. In this mode, once you touch a hole, the chanter plays continuously just like a real Scottish Highland chanter. To stop the chanter playing, start and stop the drones.

The Flip switch on the settings page toggles between high/low and low/high note order on the chanter.

On the settings page, touch the ePipes logo to visit their website, or touch the TradLessons logo to learn more about my other music apps."

ASYZ (1971) - Czech Monster Synth!

via Matjko, spotted on czechkeys.blog.cz

Googlish description: "In 70 originated from the Department of Sound Engineering Filmovéhoé Barrandov modular szstém ASYZ (analyzer and synthesizer sound), whose development has started in the late 60 years. The instrument was completed several years of additional modules, the final version was called the second jakol ASYZ The principal authors were Anthony ka designers and Bohumil Matousek, to which the early 70 years joined a sound engineer and designer Paul Pitrák, then as a sound engineer working with the tool.

Synthesizer and keyboard was not used to create sound effects or external signal processing .. As a manually controlled source audio signal generator was used a modified beat Bruel & Kjaer, producing sinusoidal oscillations in the range 20 Hz - 20 kHz. To control was also adjusted third octave filters of the same company for which the individual potentiometers nastavovala level in each zone and each zone can be switched buttons that are used to "play" in real time. Automated management tools ensure sequencer with three ceilings and sixteen steps, whose length can be adjusted. Among the modules are a VCO, a noise generator, filters, bass and treble, parametric filters, circular and phase modulators, amplifiers, merge, VCA, ADSR generators, LFO, random signal generators, envelope follower and auxiliary circuits. Levels of selected signals follow a small six-channel mixer. Signal parameters can be monitored using the built-in oscilloscope, an indicator of arousal, voltmeter and frequency counter for measurement. To connect the modules used sockets and cables used in analogue computers MEDA. Jacks on the inputs and outputs of audio and control signals are color-coded for clarity.

In the second half of the 90 years was added šestioktávová keyboard (FF) with separate stand and synthesizer could serve to normal play. For several years, but stopped. Now it has in its collections by Cinepost.

Accordion GCF - Three-Row GCF Diatonic Button Accordion for the iPad

YouTube via tradlessons | February 11, 2011 |

"Accordion GCF is an authentic sounding, easy to play, standard 31-button three-row GCF tuned Button Accordion for the iPad.

GCF (SOL in Espanol) is a very popular tuning and is used in many styles of music including Tex-Mex, Zydeco, Mexican, Tejano, and Conjunto.

The instrument has a G scale on the bottom row, a C scale on the middle row, and an F scale on the top row.

The button layout is based on the most popular standard used for GCF instruments with additional accidentals at the top end of the rows.

The app uses the same fingerings and has essentially the same button spacing as a real instrument.

The built-in note guide will help you quickly learn your way around the buttons.

Here's how to get started playing tunes:

The app can be played either with the iPad on the lap or held vertically like the real instrument.

Touch the buttons with the fingers on your right hand to play. Buttons light up in green when touched.

Multiple buttons may be pressed at the same time to play chords.

This style of accordion is diatonic and plays different notes depending on whether you are pushing or pulling on the bellows.

Touch the anywhere in the bellows image at the top of the screen for PUSH notes, lift your finger for PULL notes.

The PUSH/PULL indicator shows the current bellows direction.

Adjust the Volume slider as desired.

Touch the '?' icon to show note names. The note names change with the bellows direction.

Touch the 'i' icon to bring up the help screen. Touch anywhere in the help screen to go back to the play screen.

All settings are saved when the app exits.

Gestures Gear VBlog: Giants Steps on the WX7

YouTube via AccumulatedGestures | February 11, 2011 |

"Sean wasn't happy with his first video playing the WX7 and decided to up the ante and shred some electronic sax on John Coltrane's Giant Steps, and then some general fun playing around with synth tones.

The WX7 is a vintage wind controller made by Yamaha in the late 1980s that is long since out of production. Not having its own built in sound module, the WX7 is here setup to control a Dave Smith Instruments Desktop Evolver via MIDI.

About us:
The Accumulated Gestures are an 8-piece neo-soul/funk band from Perth, Western Australia. With lead vocalist/producer Donovan de Souza being an avid collector of synthesizers and vintage keyboards as well as a current move towards incorporating more synthesizers in our band sound, our Gear VBlog aims to show the strengths and limitations of synth interfaces, synthesizers and other musical gear. Garfield Electronics Doctor Click

via this auction

"This is the Ultimate Syncing device (see below for list of manufactures it can be used with)
A must have for any analogue synth geek and collectors alike, run all your vintage gear in Sync .
I've not used for some time but just gave it a run through Linking a system 100 Sequencer with a Memory Moog+an Obie DX and a ARP 2600 and it performed as it should.

The Doctor Click can be driven by both steady and wildly varying sources, including click tracks, tape codes (Roland, Oberheim, Linn, etc.), synthesizer clocks, live drumming, or its own internal crystal-based clock.
The outputs consist of nine timebases (7 are fixed, two are variable), two rhythmically triggered envelopes or LFO's (12V, .5V), trigger, trigger to click converter, inverter, delay, start, and step programming functions.
The Doctor Click click has two separate channels for producing the two variable timebases each with its own set of rhythm selector switches. The first row of labels is the timebase interpretation (ie. how many clicks) and the second row is notation interpretation (eg. quarter note, eighth-note triplet, etc). While that might sound confusing, it should make sense when it's sitting in front of you. Channel 1 (four bars to 64th triplet) has Envelope 1, Gate, Time Lag, and the Auto Programmer. Channel 2 (1/4 note to 32nd note) has Envelope 2 and the headphone output (which can also be used as a second arpeggiator clock).

With its extensive masking features, it can be synced to audio such as drum loops or drum machines without clock outputs.
It also has recording & programming features that can store up to 1k of events.
The gates and triggers have adjustable pulse width, and can inverted for either falling or rising edge. The envelope outputs can be used as gates or additional clocks.
Inputs: Pulse, Tape Code A/B, Tape Code C, External Metronome Trigger, Inverter In, Delay In, Reset, Play, Enter
Outputs: 12X (Roland CR68/78, SCI), 24X (MemoryMoog, MXR), 48X (LinnDrum, Roland MC-4, E-Mu), 64X (PPG), 96X (Oberheim DSX, DMX, DX), 348X (Fairlight), DIN Sync (Roland x0xbox, Korg), Gate (5V/15V), Trigger (5v/15V), Trigger to Click, Time Lag, Envelope 1, Envelope 2, Headphone, Metronome, Inverter Out, Delay Out, 5V Start, Ground Start

Knobs: Channel 1 (PW, Attack, Decay, Amount, Gate PW), Channel 2 (PW, Attack, Decay, Amount, Headphone Level), Metronome Level, Delay Amount

On 11-Feb-11 at 15:42:37 GMT, seller added the following information:

Just want to point out my use of the unit was predominately getting various devices to talk but also the creativity & fun you can have with switching time bases i.e running a drum machine say at 100bpm and changing the clock time to the arpeggiators on my pro 600 and Memorymoog+or Jupiter 6 (or whatever you have), running at dbl the bpm or in division and then trigger LFO's on my modulars with different clocks etc so running items synced with division of X bpm there a lot to the Dr click and I have not really explored all its potential. I never had a manual until recently never needed it... a pdf manual comes via courtesy of L.Hammond thx Lorne :)"

Synthetic Sound Labs on eBay

Synthetic Sound Labs has been added to the "Makers on eBay" section on the right.

Synthetic Sound Labs JJP SampleCorder - Model 1450 - Preliminary Specifications

"The SSL 1450 JJP SampleCorder module is a humble tribute to Jean-Jacques Perrey and the early musique-concrete pioneers, where small snips of recordings were pieced together into new forms of musical expression. Now you can experiment using true analog sound samples that can be played back with electronic precision.

The SampleCorder is designed around an ISD2560 analog voice recorder chip, and includes compander chip to reduce noise and improve clarity.

Each module can hold two samples, each from a few milliseconds up to about 30 seconds. Each can be triggered manually via a panel mounted button, or by a gate pulse. A short "done" output pulse is available so that multiple modules can be cascaded. An onboard PIC CPU microprocessor controls timing, and is updateable by replacing a small socketed chip. Once triggered, the sample will play to the end of the sample and stop, and/or proceed to the next triggered sample. Premature retriggering or early truncation of a sample is not possible."

Synthetic Sound Labs Steiner Filter - Model 1020

"The SSL 1020 Steiner Filter is a unique filter for sound shaping that synthesists have long admired for both it's warmth and quirkiness. Invented by Nyle Steiner in the early 1970's, this filter was used in Nyle's Synthacon synthesizer line and has been lovingly recreated and updated as part of our modular line.

At first glance, it may appear to be another 2-pole State Variable type filter with it's high-pass (HP), band-pass (BP) & low-pass (LP) outputs. But that's where things get turned upside down. The 1020 has HP, BP & LP inputs, not outputs. These allow for all sorts of CUTOFF (center frequency) controlled "mixing" of input signals. Due to the unique way it's inventor injected the inputs into the internal signal path, they tend to slightly interact with each other and the control voltages, making the 1020 a bit more organic and unpredictable than many other synth filters. The RESONANCE also interacts with the CUTOFF adding an additional natural touch and warmth. But if you really crank the RESONANCE up, you can make all that warmth go out the window because at or near oscillation, the 1020 starts to squeal and complain like a school girl tantrum. We factory adjust the 1020 to stay just below oscillation at maximum panel settings, but you have the power to adjust this by a circuit board mounted trimmer.

For those of you that don't know what this video is demoing, you can go check it out at their website:

I set up OSCulator to route just a few parameters to Live. I want to point out that I'm not doing anything really advanced in this video and pretty much just scratching the surface of what's possible.

I've been waiting for an app that would finally start to really exploit the power of a multi-touch device like the iPad. The app is well designed and beautifull executed.

Sorry about the crappy camera work, it was late and I didn't really realize until half way in that I probably shouldnt have my hand RIGHT IN FRONT of the camera. Better luck next time. Also, the audio is from my camera's mic, which is OK but not great... whatever.

"Last year I build a drum module based on schematics from the 'Electronic Drum Cookbook' by Thomas Henry. I build it on breadboard but never got around to test it yet. Yesterday someone was filming my studio here so I couldn't work on my main desk for a while and decided to give the module a go. I hooked it up to my sequencers in the modular setup and got to test them in the process as well. We took some shots of this as well and last night I decided to make a little video from it. The noise coming from it is not spectacular but it was just a proof of concept. I made this video in Sony Vegas and that was also a test run for me. I plan to make more video's in the future for you to enjoy. The music on this video is from a track called 'Mercury' that a made for a sampler CD last year. You can listen to the whole track on my website. Look for the SchallPlatte 12 sampler CD."
