Korg Delta electronic and cosmetic repairs

YouTube via sounddoctorin | February 16, 2011 |

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com shows the insides of a Korg Delta and explains the overview of operation, and plays a few sounds to give a feel for this great synth. The delta is all knobs and sliders. And a joystick that can both be set for a bend amount and filter modulation amount on the x axis. The y is modulation up and noise mod down. Made in 1979 along with the Lambda and Sigma. Lambda is a fully polyphonic machine with simpler controls but 3X the oscillators and dividers! Both are great to have around! The sigma is a monosynth with a very useful performance interface. I'll try to cover these in another video soon!"

THE MISSING LINK 2-way OSC/MIDI demo

Testing out OSC-MIDI and MIDI-OSC using the Missing Link connected directly to a Yamaha O1V mixer's MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (no laptop needed).

The iPhone is sending OSC to the Missing Link, which is converting it to MIDI CCs to control the mixer. The reverse happens when I move the mixer's faders.

Now the next time Golden Ears tells you how to run your mix, you can just hand him your phone and let him do it."

"I treat a pipe organ with the Bisucit in Live 8 using great sounding Vibrato (gives a wide stereo image) and Delay (unfortunately in mono ): )

The pipe organ loop accompanies a drone and an arpeggio-type-thing both made with the SammichSID and the Biscuit.

This is also an example of the clean type sounds the biscuit can make."

FAT PCP 330 Eleven Band Analog Vocoder

via this auction

"This is an eleven band analog vocoder from the 90's. It was manufactured by a company called Freeform Analog Technologies or FAT. This device is rare and sounds excellent. The "Sibilance" feature is awesome it introduces white noise into the signals negative spaces which makes 303 loops, drum loops, or anything sound great. The eleven bands can be used to EQ any signal into odd and exotic colors. The vocoder? It's analog and sounds fantastic."

Synthanola - Bach Invention's 8 and 13 - Punch Tape Sequencer

YouTube via 256byteram | February 14, 2011 |

"This video demonstrates two paper tapes which play Inventions 8 and 13 by J.S. Bach.

Sorry about the jumpy video. My computer must have been doing something at the time. My hands can't actually move that quickly.

More information at .http://kaput.retroarchive.org/555/"

"It is a three channel music synthesiser, capable of four octaves per chanel. The 555's are used to generate each octave for each voice (or channel). There are twelve 555 timer IC's used for the synthesiser section and two more for tempo control and paper speed. It is sequenced by a Heathkit H-10 paper tape unit and programmed with a 486 PC running QBasic (seriously, it's easier).

There are a few reasons why I chose to use a paper tape machine instead of an EEPROM and counters, or a microcontroller. First, I wanted this project to be made with components available in the 1970's. Also, I think it looks better to have something moving with the music and I'm not a great fan of using IC's with bazillions of transistors in them."

555 Contest Entry - Synthanola

256byteram | February 13, 2011

"This is my 555 Contest (www.555contest.com) entry. It is an analogue synthesiser based on 555 timers, with three channels and four octaves per channel. It is sequenced with either paper tape (as shown) or by any 8-bit interface with suitable flow control.

LIVE improvisation with PRO SOUND GAMEBOY

and LSDj keyboard + COMMODORE 64 + POD XT

YouTube via lukhashdotcom | February 14, 2010 |

"Live demo (improvisation) of my self-made gear.
I've spent a while on ordering and soldering all this stuff.

Gear Used:
★ DMG Gameboy with Prosound modification, equipped with LSDj cart and custom made keyboard interface connected with POD XT live.
★ C64 is equipped with Cynthcart.
★ Second DMG is fitted with Nanoloop 1.5

In 2009 I began experimenting with original chiptune machines. Commodore 64 and a couple of modded DMG Nintendo Gameboys created a blend of original 8bit sound from the 80's and Rock music.

"The catridge turns your C64 into a realtime controllable synth. With real time filter control, that can be added to the commodore's ports with two podmeters. A real easy beginners mod :) The chip on the cartridge is installed on a socket, so that it can be replaced with future updates to the firmware on the chip. This is also the reason why its not in a catridge housing, although thats fairly easy to arrange."

Vermona Perfourmer Analog Synth

via this auction
"This synth is basically 4 single oscillator mono synths with the incredible Vermona sound. It can function several ways. It can be 4 independant mono synths. It can work as a 2 voice duophonic synth. It can be one phat 4 oscillator synth. It can also work in poly mode which alternates oscillators with every step/key press. It is analog and sounds like an analog animal. It has some great sounds that I am sure you can find on you tube if you've never heard it before. This one has the chrome knobs and has CV/Gate input as well as midi. The CV/Gate input make it nice to hook up to a modular setup. It also gives you the option to send the raw oscillator out to other modular gear. It requires a trs insert cable for each oscillator to achieve that function. This synth can play many roles and is unique as I've never used anything quite like it. Its sort of like the Korg Mono/poly but it really is its own machine. Manual, Patch Sheets, and Power cable are included."

dealing with empty-case malaise: psychedelic lights behind mattson mini modular blanking panels

YouTube via hewstigator | February 15, 2011 |

"OK so I realized quickly that this "case lighting project" was pretty lame without video, so here it is... but i couldn't record any "modular synth audio" without nesting the case in a horrible tangle of wires (my system is currently spread out between this mattson mini modular case, an analogue systems case, mooger foogers, and a korg monotron (which, once the CV inputs were added, is pretty nice EXCEPT for the layer of white noise on top of the audio output$@#!@). as you can see, at the moment i only have 2 mattson modules, a shortage which i am trying to rectify!... the orange "m"s are not standard, but were "leftover" plates that george mattson was kind enough to let me experiment with!

The music is just a semi-germanic unfinished song by my band the new lines...

note re: monotron - people have figured out that the noise comes from the VCF, theoretically fix-able by replacing the chip that amplifies the outbound vcf signal...

Before virtual analog it was called analog modeling, or was it? The Clavia Nord Lead was the first, followed by the Yamaha VL1 and Korg Prophecy which included physical modeling, followed by the JP-8000, Yamaha AN1X and then the Novation Supernova and Access Virus. I forget what each called their technology at the time. When did the term virtual analog get coined and by whom?
