another demo of the rock band 3 pro squier midi output

YouTube Uploaded by hewstigator on Mar 8, 2011
Follow-up to this post.
"OK after that first video i realized i hadn't taken advantage of two key features of the rock band 3 squier guitar so here is another demo:

because each string of the guitar transmits on a different channel, you can assign each one to a different instrument. (imagine 6 fat monophonic synths assigned to each string!). here, in the first track (the large video) the top two (thickest) strings are assigned to an acoustic bass, and the lower four (thinner) strings are assigned to a modular lead on my beloved mattson mini modular analog synth... (because i was not feeling very coordinated, i am only playing the 1st, 2nd, and 4th strings though)...

the inset video is all of the strings assigned to control a lead patch on the mattson modular synth, but this time i have enabled the pitch bend - i said before that the guitar did not detect any "string vibrato" you may give it.. well, if you enable pitch bend, and set the max bend depth to one half step (it is very sensitive), then if you wobble your hand to give the note vibrato, the guitar will sense your hand shaking the guitar and actually output a useable vibrato via pitch bend... so that is what you want to pay attention to in the inset...

i think, if i recall correctly, the large video lead is the mattson + a VCO from the moogerfooger freqbox, and the inset is the mattson + moogerfooger ring modulation...

finally, a close listen to the bass line track will reveal that sometimes each finger-pluck sends a bunch of note-ons which is a little muddy... i think that this would not happen if i were wearing "finger picks", but i didn't have any on hand at the time!

also, sorry about the pre-mature fade-out, my android phone randomly decided to stop recording the large video prematurely..."

x0xb0x Synthesizer TB-303 Clone w/Wood Endcaps!

via this auction
via the seller: "You probably already know what this is, but if not, it's a clone of the original circuit from the much sought after Roland TB-303. They are all built from kits; none are available from an original manufacturer.

I sourced all the parts myself and used all highest quality components, including 1% resistors and accurate vintage parts where needed. I went to school for electrical engineering and have built and repaired many synths over the years, including quite a few x0xb0xen. It's working 100% correctly and sounds amazing.

I painted the case of this x0x with a special metal flake automotive paint from House of Kolor. It's a 4-stage paint, including primer, base coat, sparkly middle coat, and top clear coat. It was all shot through my Sata II paint gun in my garage and I must say it looks fantastic. It reminds me of Kustom amps from the 70s. It's basically like 70s boat paint!

I made the end cheeks out of poplar wood. The center profile was cut out with a router, and the outside was cut on a table saw and sanded smooth. I stained the wood mahogany brown and coated it with gloss polycrylic. The screws are counter-sunk and attach to nuts inside the case. These end caps took me hours to make, but I think they make the x0x look pretty amazing!

The only electronic mods done to the x0x were the bass boost mod, as well as the addition of a power switch on the back panel. Everything else is stock, with Adafruit firmware. It sounds fantastic, and will kick out sweet acid basslines all week while looking chic in your rig. There are a couple very minor scratches in the top faceplate, and a small manufacturing flaw in the rear plate. See close-ups below. Includes new power supply."

Analogue Solutions Semblance #01: Processing External Sound Through the Analogue Filter

YouTube via Uploaded by rezfilter on Mar 8, 2011

"Here's a few sound sources filtered though the Analogue Solutions Semblance synthesizer
The Semblance is not only a great dual oscillator analogue monosynth, but it can also serve as a dedicated signal processor using one of the EXT Ins at the back of the unit. The sky's the limit with what can be processed - you'll find some interesting ideas in the clip!

The video also features the Semblance EG being triggered via MIDI (notes), which can be used to create unusual filter effects for beats and other percussive noise sources when the MIDI notes match the beat being filtered."

The environment is also set up so you only need the maschine midi input track to be record enabled saving cpu cycles. Also great for live use."

robot gibberish with bit blob jr.

YouTube via Uploaded by bowmoneydrums on Mar 8, 2011

"this is a bit blob jr. kit from bleeplabs.com...they make the best beginner kits for synths, and they always produce really awesome chaotic sounds...

anyways...this thing is like a musical amoeba...just touching it alters the sound, and then you have the little patch chords to mess with...i don't think i have heard the same weird sounds twice... sometimes it's very rhythmic, sometimes very melodic, sometimes too much to handle haha

I don't even really like "noise" music or whatever you want to call it, but something about unbridled lawlessness of sound is opening a new door in my drummer brain

sorry about the out of focus video...actually...no, i kind alike it...it looks like a bad polaroid"

The Haken Continuum

YouTube Uploaded by copperleaves on Mar 8, 2011

"This is what I call a "SHOW & TELL" video. It's the kind of video people make when they get a new musical instrument they haven't the slightest idea how to play and they're dying to show it off to the world even though it's only been out of the box for five minutes!

This instrument is called the HAKEN CONTINUUM FINGERBOARD and it's wonderful. In this video I am playing only one sound (a very "breathy" timbre that is somewhere between a clarinet and a Persian flute), and I am using only one voice (although it is a polyphonic instrument).

What distinguishes this instrument from other interfaces is that it is played in three dimensions: from left to right, forward & backward, and up & down. The hand of the player slides and dances on a smooth neoprene cushion constantly changing and "sculpting" the sound as it goes. Parameters can be altered to suit the musician, but in this video pitch is controlled by moving to the left and to the right like a standard keyboard, volume is controlled by pressure up and down on the neoprene surface, and timbre is controlled by movement of the hand forward and backward. A single hand can perform any or all of these movements at any given moment. This frees the other hand to play another keyboard (which is what I do in this video), or control some other device.

The continuum is limited only by your own musical imagination. What you see me do in this video is just one sound and one voice. It is infinitely more versatile than anything that could be shown in just a couple of minutes. Although the continuum is essentially a MIDI/CV controller interface, it has a large menu of its own sounds built into it. These sounds were prototyped by continuum virtuoso Edmund Eagan in Kyma, Symbolic Sound and the prototypes were then hand coded by Lippold Haken (the inventor of the instrument) for the fingerboard's digital signal processor.

Yeah, I know, it all sounds terribly complicated, but it's not. The instrument is very "friendly", easy to understand and a lot of fun!

Stay tuned for "The Haken Continuum MIDI Fingerboard Meets the Moog MIDI Etherwave Theremin" - two of the most exotic and unusual electronic music interfaces ever conceived."

1980s Peterson Bottom Line Pedal

flickr By Mark Dalzell
(click for more)

"1984 Peterson Bottom Line bass synth pedal. Similar idea to something like a Moog Taurus, but with less control. There are 3 levels of decay, on/off for attack, and sliders for volume, sustain and voicing. On the back is a fine tune adjustment and there is an internal coarse adjustment. It all folds up into a slick little road case. I currently have 2 - this one has a lower serial number but the cables seem to be a newer style (black instead of gray) so they may have been replaced. The other one works fine but the tolex is in rough shape. According to Peterson's website, these were manufactured starting in the mid 70s. The 1984 date is an educated guess based on similar serial numbers produced that year."

Oberheim DX Stretch Vintage Digital Drum Machine

"The DX Stretch features the standard DX drum machine with an additional four drum sounds added by the Stretch section... All functions of the DX section work great but 2 of the pads of the Stretch section aren't working. This doesn't mean the entire voice is out.....just one tuning of a sound and one volume level pad of another is out. Other than that everything else about this vintage drum machine works great!!! It features MIDI and has individual outputs and tuning pots on the rear panel for each sound. It's in absolutely fantastic cosmetic condition as can be seen in the close-up photos. If you want to program beats like early hip-hop and classic 80s pop then this is what you're looking for. Due to the age of this item (over 25 years) I can provide no warranty or guarantee that it will work forever. It hasn't given me any problems besides the ones stated previously. Also includes power cable, DX manual, Stretch manual and installation instructions in case you wish to remove the Stretch portion. The EEPROMS included are DX Kick, DMX Snare 6, DX Hat, DX Tom, Shaker 2 + Clap, Crash (cymbal socket only), Long Ride (cymbal socket only), Electric Tom 3, Fat Electronic Snare, Tambourine + Rim Shot, Tabla, Triangle, African Drum, Click (cymbal socket only), Long Noise (cymbal socket only), and Electronic Snare. Last week I was in the studio playing sounds on the STAC and found a real interesting chord progression. In key of F I started on the iii chord, the awesome and very cool A minor chord and played an arpeggio on that, then alternated with the A# major chord on the root mixed with the equally awesome D minor chord on the top of the chord mix, arpeggiating notes... creating this bed of harmonic conflict that begs to be resolved, and teasing more by going to the V chord, the C major, and then back to the first A minor progression... and finally breaking away into a chord progression on the MAJORS side of the song starting with F major using the I, IV, V pattern. Branched over into the minors at G minor (ii chord)"
