iConrolMIDI iXpander Now Available

iXpander - iControlMIDI on iTunes
"Leveraging 2 years of experience in designing GUI for control surface and 25+ years of experience in designing synthesizers sounds, we are bringing the best of those experiences to the iPad with iControlMIDI for Oberheim Xpander / Matrix-12, namely iXpander (excluding Modulation Matrix).

iControlMIDI is a UI Friendly and Workflow Efficient Solution that let you control your MIDI machines and software, simply from your iPad.

iControlMIDI is Plug & Play (actually there is nothing to plug!).
In 3-clicks on your Mac or couple of clicks on your PC, you are up and running...
iControlMIDI uses your:
• iPad with WiFi connectivity
• WiFi router (like an AirPort)
• [MAC] MacOS / Utilities / AudioMIDISetup / Network (MIDI Network Sessions)
• [PC] rtpMIDI and Apple Bonjour

iControlMIDI let you control all MIDI controllable parameters.
Parameter Name and Value displayed on iControlMIDI UI are the same as the ones displayed on your synth if you were to program it from its control panel!

iControlMIDI offers 3-Controls per Parameter:
• + button: precise +1 parameter value adjustment
• - button: precise -1 parameter value adjustment
• Slider: full range parameter value adjustment

iControlMIDI is a Workflow Efficient Solution as it offers UI Consistent Synth Functions, for example, the VCF functions are grouped on the same iControlMIDI Page.

iControlMIDI integrates with your DAW. Real-time parameters adjustments triggered on iControlMIDI can be recorded and playback on your DAW.

iControlMIDI is a Zero [Mac] and Low [PC] Dependencies Solution; iControlMIDI relies on iOS 4.2 CoreMIDI and MacOS CoreMIDI frameworks is 100% MIDI, 100% iOS and 100% MacOS compatible and:
• Does not require to pay for additional software or have additional software installed on your Mac; requires to download rtpMIDI and Apple Bonjour on your PC
• Does not require to pay for additional hardware
• Does not require to do message mapping
• Does not require to design a UI on your Mac or PC and upload/sync it on your iPad
• Does not require to design a UI on your iPad.

With iControlMIDI, we are offering you to be immediately operational, so you can focus on your music (not on the IT/MIDI part of it!) and unleash your creativity.

iControlMIDI is designed by Electronic Musicians for Electronic Musicians."

"check out the synth icons.. there’s a DX7 on other pages too. Arp, Moog, Nord, and Waldorf Wave! It works well with my Blofled keyboard thru the Camera Connection USB Adaptor, poly seems to be limited to 4 or 5 notes on the more complex patches. It responds to Velocity, Aftertouch, Pitch and Mod Wheel too.. The Arpeggiator seems to be quite nice as well"

Meggy Synth - Demo

flickr By sean_carney
"Meggy Synth is a sketch I wrote that allows the Meggy Jr to act as a simple step-based synthesizer for writing 8 bit music.

The sketch allows you to write music over a three octave range using anything from whole notes to thirty-second notes with optional slurs between notes. This video shows me writing a scale in pitch mode, switching to duration mode to set the length of the notes, then playing the song back in both pitch and duration view so you can see how the modes work together.

"Piezoelectric materials are about as close to magic as you can get. They turn physical pressure into electricity and can even turn electricity into physical pressure - an amazing sort of bidirectional converter for mechanical and electrical energies. Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that you can easily 'grow' your own piezoelectric crystals overnight using just a couple of common ingredients - awesome."

SimpleMidiPad Now Available

"SimpleMidiPad is an easy-to-use MIDI CC source for driving software or hardware synths and effects, and remote control of a DAW. Each of the four pads sends X, Y, and Z MIDI control messages, with user-selectable destination addresses.

Note that SimpleMidiPad makes no sound of its own. It requires either a CoreMidi-compatible USB MIDI adaptor (via the Camera Connection Kit) or an OS X computer running the Network MIDI interface for WiFi usage."

iPad vs Launchpad vs Monome - 16 Step Sequencing

YouTube Uploaded by modul8tor on May 31, 2010

"In this video we talk about the Apple iPad versus the Novation Launchpad versus the Monome - in a topic as old fashioned as 16 step sequencing. The video is not so much about the sequencing as such, but about the different form factors, the haptic and the used software of the three candidates in the comparison. My favorite is the iPad for now, as it offers a minimal footprint with maximum possibilities. From a "touch" perspective and coolness, the monome wins, whereas the Launchpad gains momentum with its budget friendly approach. Go make some music! modul8or"

Synthenoxe Part 1.0 - an Elka Synthex impression

YouTube Uploaded by wavebox2011 on Feb 27, 2011

"Just a quick impression of the Synthex synthesizer in the project studio. The fun-title "Synthenoxe" is a reminiscence of J.M. Jarre's early studio recordings like Oxygene and Equinoxe. His magnificent sound has inspired my noodling in this video, too.

All the sounds (except for the drums) have been recorded with the Synthex; including the ocean waves and animals in the intro. :-)

While experimenting around with the Synthex, I started recording some audio tracks to the DAW. And I ended up with well over 50 tracks and this demo-video. :-) This synthesizer is such an inspiring machine!

About the synthesizer:

The Synthex is clearly underrated! Maybe because it is not coming from one of the large synth plants in Japan or the U.S.A., but rather surprisingly from an organ manufacturer, the italian company Elka.
Despite this "lack of heritage" the Synthex has an amazing sound and deserves to be named alongside other classic power-synths such as the Jupiter-8 or the Prophet 5.

Sure, Jean-Michel Jarre based his famous laser harp sound on the Synthex - but it's by far not limited to that cliché.

I looked for an easy way to sync up the Synthex's internal sequencer to MIDI Clock. The most straightforward way was to hook up a Korg Electribe (ER-1 mkII) to MIDI and have a percussive instrument do the audio triggering of the Synthex. Simple, quite robust and even "programmable" to a certain degree.

Some Synthexes have no MIDI-interface (like the one in the video). But they all have one of the most intuitive sequencers I've come across in a classic synth: 4 independant monophonic sequences, easily and quickly recordable in step- or real-time-mode, syncable to an audio trigger.
And if you're a preset freak, you can even store your sequences along with your sounds as data beeping to a tape-recorder (or another recording device), thanks to the tape-interface. Old school high-tech. :-)

[ to the youngsters: "tapes", often used in the form of "cassettes", is an ancient technology for audio recording, quite popular before digital recording and youtube existed. yes, there was such a time, way way back, right after the dinos and the stone age. believe me, i was there. not with the dinos, but in the tape age. :-) ]

keep on sounding!"

Elka Synthex - original Laser Harp sound

""C'est le sound que fait la musique". Mister Jarre's Laser Harp has written history, even if it's just a controller and the real Laser Harp sound comes from an Elka Synthex, which is doing its job in the background.

Some say that Jean-Michel Jarre used the Synthex's factory preset, while others claim he modified or even recreated it for his music. Never mind who's right or wrong - it's a classic and really good synthesizer sound. Let's have a listen, directly at the source..."

52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 49: Thor Oscillator Types

YouTube Uploaded by PropellerheadSW on Mar 11, 2011

"Synth School enters its final and most advanced device starting this week. Strap in and get ready because we're about to tackle the Thor Polysonic Synthesizer. Thor is called "polysonic" because it offers a smorgasbord of various oscillator types, filter types, and signal routing options.

This week we'll be focusing on the first major oscillator types in Thor. Each oscillator has a specific synth technology behind it and each one has a particular sound that will be suitable for different uses. If you've found yourself relying on presets for Thor or if you tend to go straight to the analog oscillator because it's familiar to you, you'll definitely want to get to know these other oscillators. They'll expand your sonic palette and ramp up your sound design chops."

Electronic percussion improvisation - navigating sound space through playing

YouTube Uploaded by otoskope on Mar 11, 2011

"Percussionist Olof Olsson performs an improvisation on an electronic percussion instrument designed and programmed by Palle Dahlstedt.

In this instrument, the musician navigates a huge space of possible sounds, through playing and listening. All pads play a single polyphonic sound engine, but each pad generates its own set of parameters. The size of the cluster of parameter sets can be varied, and the sounds of different pads can be blended, i.e., a pad has an effect also on the sound of the other pads. At any time, the whole cluster of sounds can be moved in any direction. When the musician presses a pedal switch, the cluster is moved towards the current sound, and then this subspace can be explored - so the sounds are changed through playing, and the timberal variation is virtually limitless.

This instrument is a percussion adaption of the vector mapping technique used in the instruments Palle Dahlstedt designed for duo pantoMorf.

The percussion pad is a DrumKAT, and the instrument is implemented in a Nord Modular G2, visible to the right in the video."

EMS Putney Improvisations - Tribute to Delia Derbyshire

Full details here.

"Delia Derbyshire was one of the pioneers of electronic music during and after her tenure at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. She was both a gifted composer and an audacious and precise engineer. Since seeing her in documentaries, and hearing her music I’m both awed by her and have a synth-geek’s crush on her. She was on my mind as I recorded these pieces, and I dedicate them to her memory.

The 5 parts of this piece were recorded in one evening, with no editing or overdubbing. The Putney was plugged into the Stereo Memory Man pedal, and the pedal was plugged into my computer."

"More fun with the M-Audio Venom. Note this is not a proper demo. I am creating a TouchOSC template for all editable parameters in single mode of the Venom and I thought I'd throw this video up. The Venom is turning out to be a surprisingly deep synth. In this video I'm just tweaking the distortion parameters in the Insert FX page of my editor. Wireless control is via The Missing Link. Sliders from left to right: Depth, PreGain, PostGain and High Cutoff. The bottom end drops out in the video as I am still using the mic in on my Canon T2i. No time to sync audio and video just yet. Trust me, it sounds MUCH better live. The more I play with this synth the more I am impressed. I don't want to give too much away before my proper review, but it sounds really, really good. There are things you can do with this synth that you simply cannot do with others. This is a deep and powerful synth. Note this is Single mode with only one patch. The Venom supports Multi mode with up to four patches active."
