Audio Damage Does Euro

Follow-up to Audio Damage Going Hard (Yes, I am having fun with the titles of these posts).

Snips via Analog Industries:

"Audio Damage is about to wade hip-deep in to the Euro Rack modular market. The reason for this is that we wanted to start releasing hardware as the next logical step in the progression of the company, and the infrastructure provided by the existing Euro-Rack market makes an entrance in to hardware releasing less risky than, say, making a Jupiter 80.

Anyhow, market-speak aside, we've designated a new catalog line, adm (which is obviously "Audio Damage Modular"), and the first product released will be adm02, the 2io module. This is a USB1.1 class-compliant audio interface with two inputs and two DC-coupled outputs. Its main claim to fame is that it will be fully compatible with the iPad, enabling you to use any CoreAudio-compliant iPad app in a Euro-Rack modular environment.

Next, our reasoning was that in a Euro live performance rig, you might want to use plug-ins as send effects, and this would enable you to use a netbook or whatever, and a simple ASIO host, and have low latency insert effects or audio sources with your modular. (We might have a plug-in or two to recommend in that context.)

And finally, with DC-coupled outputs it can work with Volta or Silent Way as a method of controlling a modular. With only two I/O, this isn't its prime directive, but it'll work in that context, should you need it to."

I'm giving this one the Musikmesse label even though it's not being shown at the Musikmesse. New product announcements get to ride the wave here.

Roland HS-60 Modifications

YouTube Uploaded by rolandsh1000 on Apr 5, 2011

"This very short video shows two of the modifications made to a Roland HS-60...well, 3 if you count the chop job!

The first is a 2-octave transpose switch, which allows you to transpose the shorter keyboard over the entire 61-key range of the original keyboard.

The second is a 1/4" jack that allows you to patch external signals through the famous Juno chorus. Sorry that the sound is slightly out of sync and doesn't really highlight the differences when the chorus is activated - trust me, it really changes the sound!

This video was made to accompany an ebay auction in April 2011"

Also see the Junior-106.

Update:

pics of the inside below.

"Up for bid is a highly modified Roland HS-60. Ok, this certainly qualifies as rare: I know of only 6 units that have been chopped down this way and I’ve done two of them. You are unlikely to find another like this anytime soon.

Anyway, if you are looking at this, you probably know already that the HS-60 was the consumer version of the Juno-106, except that it had a built-in amplifier and speakers. Those have been removed from this keyboard in order to make the size more compact. So this is now effectively a Juno-106 a few useful modifications:

Most obviously, the unit has been chopped down to 3-octaves. This reduces the weight of the unit (HS-60’s are fairly heavy synths) and the footprint. To allow for access to the entire keyboard range, I added circuitry and a switch to let the user transpose the keyboard by 2 octaves.

There is now a ‘Chorus In’ jack on the back, wired to one of the original inputs. I think this is an improvement over the HS-60, since now you can run external signals through the famous Roland chorus, and have some amplitude control over that signal using the onboard output VCA.

All voice chips have been reconditioned. That is, the factory resin coating which causes these voice chips to fail has been removed. After resin removal, all voice chips were reinstalled using Millmax sockets. To verify operation, the unit was left on continuously for days and all voices worked perfectly.

The 2-prong power plug has been replaced with a more standard 3-prong IEC power cable, which is now the electronic equipment standard.

The original memory battery has been replaced with a CR2032 in a clip holder to make future battery replacements easy. The CR2032 actually has a greater capacity and the one there now (dated Jan2011) should last many many years.

The unit was calibrated per the factory service manual, so it’s now running within specifications."

"Moog Voyager Select Series. This was purchased thru guitar center who ordered it thru Moog. It took them Three weeks to make it because i wanted it custom colors. I was told they didnt make a black "select" series with red/amber backlighting so i had it custom made. The select series are a little more expensive then the regular voyager performer models. My favorite part about this model is how it has a dimmer knob near the keys that lights the entire backdrop Red/Amber color (as you can see from the picture)"

Those aren't iPads. Videos below.

"The ultimate music production and performance tool.
The landscape for the creative artist in any audio environment is about to leap into a new future with the arrival of new UK company Dark Matter Audio and its revolutionary debut product: DMA1. This incredible audio device is anything you want it to be – guitar effects processor, high quality studio tool or performance instrument – thanks to its open architecture and Online Store that lets you wirelessly update DMA1 with a growing range of pro audio apps.
DMA1’s capabilities are extensive: a compact multi-FX processor that can also act as a digital multitrack recorder, MP3/4 player, MIDI interface, (up to) 5.1 digital mixing desk…
Much like a Smart Phone, musicians and producers will be able to wirelessly download applications to make DMA1 into a drum machine, sampler, loop recorder, digital patchbay, video tutorial device, chord and scale matcher, database of transcribed music, lyric organizer, composition sketch tool…
But unlike today’s explosion in Smart Devices, DMA1 is built from the ground up for music making and is entirely focused towards musicians and producers, while rugged construction means it can be used anywhere – on stage, on the road, in the studio and even in outside broadcast situations. It’s been designed without compromise, featuring both high quality audio processing power – by way of a SHARC and an ARM processor for the user interface – and professional connectivity, while the 7-inch Touchscreen makes for quick, intuitive hands-on control, making DMA1 inspirational to use with professional results every time.
With its innovative design, DMA1 really exploits the future of music making, performing and recording. DMA1 is the ultimate studio and performance tool… right there at your fingertips.
Dark Matter Audio CEO Jon Stuart said: “with DMA1 we’ve endeavored to create a paradigm shift in the world of audio production and performance. New Schmidt Analog Synth Debuts at the Musikmesse

via John Bowen:
"I thought I’d get you the first news about a new, 8-voice all analog synthesizer debuting at Messe in the EMC/Moog Booth (along with the Solaris, Muse, Spektralis, and Mellotron stuff).

It has presets, it has 7 filters (3 ladder type, 4 state variable 12 dB set up as 2 ‘dual filters’) and 4 Oscs - each osc is a bit different. Something like 107 knobs on the thing!

The designer is Stefan Schmidt, but not the one who runs Native Instruments - it’s yet another ‘Smith’ in the synth world :-)

It’s got stereo outs, individual voice outs, and some control voltage inputs (I think 4). I’ll try to get you more info later.

By the way - it sounds great!

And it’s a REAL heavyweight synth - with the travel case (like an anvil case) it’s 55 kilos!!

p.s. we are starting production finally - I have 4 production units of Solaris at the show."

Update: trying to find out if this is the Stefan Schmidt from TBS/MAM mentioned here. If anyone knows feel free to comment or email.

Update 5/6: John Bowen confirmed it is the same Schmidt. The following is via Juergen Haible who is known for his own designs specifically in the Synth DIY world:

"That's *the* Stefan Schmidt, all right.

I've followed the development of this synth over the last 8 years or so, and have always been forced to keep my mouth shut and keep it a secret. So it finally has hit the Musikmesse and it's out in the open. From what I've seen and heard, this will be the most powerful analogue polysynth *ever*, if it goes into production. It's not the typical "modern" approach of having a knob-ladden panel connected to a small piece of electronics with specialized chips. On the contrary, it's stuffed with opamps and OTAs to the brim, and each of the endless filter functions is realized in such discrete hardware. An absolutely amazing design, from one of the most dedicated synth designers on this planet.

JH."

Rumors on the price? $25,000 euros. Only one is currently in existence.

Update 5/7:

MESSE11: Mother Of God - Its The Schmidt Polysynth

via Sonic State

Some highlights:
157 knobs - all parameters on the front panel.
Panel folds down.
LED color knob and colors can be saved per patch.
Four VCO at 8 voice polyphony for 32 analog oscillators.
Seven filters.
Many modulations per OSC, filter, etc.
Stereo.
New innovative functions - unique oscillator with four points modulation on OSC1, metallic oscillator that makes digital sounds, but is fully analog.
Schmidt made the MAM MB-33 - again, see this link for some history.
Schmidt started eight years ago on this synth. He spent six full years focused on it.

Update 4/8: some audio at the end. via D in the comments.

Silent Way ES-1 + CR-78 + Modular + Moog FreqBox

YouTube Uploaded by s0LVentCIty on Apr 5, 2011

"Hi my name is Solvent and this is my 2nd Eurorack modular system video. The big news here is that I've got everything running from Expert Sleepers Silent Way (via Ableton Live) - no Midi, no Midi-to-CV/clock, just Silent Way converting audio directly into CVs and Gates, from my Presonus audio interface into an Expert Sleepers ES-1 module... I've even got my CR-78 clocked via a Silent Way LFO!

The first half is all about that sizzly bassline - DinSync OSC303 + Moog FreqBox's VCO, Bubblesound Sem20's HPF being modulated by an LFO coming from the Korg MS20. Sequence pattern is bring altered in real time by the Intellijel uScale quantizer.

The 2nd half is all about processing the CR-78 through the Flight of Harmony Plague Bearer, which is a weird filter that aims to destroy. And I think it does a fine job of that here."

"WATCH YOUR EARS AND SPEAKERS. There are big volume jumps and some sounds clip the poor little FlipHD microphone. Please be careful, I'm not sure the YT encoding is going to limit that stuff and clean it up. This is my first patch with this setup, just screwing around. Through zero FM and Wave Folding from a Metalbox-built CGS Wave Multiplier, through a Thomas White LPG clone and with help from a Topp 281 Function Generator and Fonik Attenuverter. 2nd ZO is in LFO mode and sending CV to every interesting input on the other modules. Noisy! Spooky! Fun!"

Dual Zeroscillator, take 2

Uploaded by dwenius on Mar 27, 2011

"WATCH YOUR EARS AND SPEAKERS. Unpredictable volume fluctuations and very low frequencies. YouTube's compression algorithm has NO IDEA what to do with this. I mean, it's supposed to be noisy and weird but...not that much. Similar patch as take 1, except with a faster envelope for the typical pinging FM sounds. No "Buchla bongos", though. Still the first bit of noodli9ng with this little lunchbox of doom. Careful viewers will spot the point where I turn a knob with nothing connected to it. Oops. Helps to use your eyes. Thanks to Cynthia, Mike at Metalbox, Thomas White, Toppobrillo, Fonik, Ken Stone, and Todd Fletcher for helping make these modules possible."

via Muff's:
"First patch with the ZOWI and associated new DIY and custom Wiard format modules. Completely random noisy noodling; watch for the spot in the 2nd video where I turn a knob with nothing attached to it d'oh! I had an hour with nobody in the house and figured I'd provide the promised videos; more to come for sure. CAUTION: particularly in the first video, there are some big volume jumps and a resonant screech or two. Watch your ears and speakers! The resonance on the Thomas White RLPG is no joke!

Basic patch is: ZO sin output -> CGS Wave Multiplier "Folds" section -> RLPG. 2nd ZO is in LFO mode, one pair of quadrature outs goes to folds CV and Offset CV, the Folds CV is also multed to control the LPG freq. 2nd pair of quadrature outs go to the Attack and Decay CV of a cycling 281 envelope. One Attenuverting output is used as an offset to the v/Oct in of the LFO speed ZO, providing crude manual control of event timing smile Slight delay and too much nasty reverb from a Boss RE-20 in the FX loop of the MFOS stereo mixer that's just offscreen in the Euro rig."

Wasp Dual Bandpass filters in series

YouTube Uploaded by dwenius on Jan 20, 2010

"The Metalbox Dual Wasp filter is here driven by a sawtooth sequence, modulated with an AR envelope, and also fed with inverted copies of the same 8 note sequence (different than the note data). This is a real sweet spot for this filter and this brief example only hints at the vocal timbres possible."

Metalbox Dual Wasp

Uploaded by dwenius on Jan 20, 2010

"Here we have a demo of the Metalbox Dual Wasp filter, based on the CMOS filter from the EDP Wasp. This is a state-variable design that won't quite self-oscillate, but takes FM like a champ and has some very exploitable circuit features. This demo shows the Low Pass mode filtering a saw wave, with LFO modulation ranging between a slow sinewave sweep to audio-rate FM.

It is very difficult to make a video of this filter that is short enough to upload to You Tube! It sucks you in and boom, 15 minutes and 3GB go by..."

Djembe with Heavy Effecting (OTO Biscuit)

YouTube Uploaded by FatSynthDude on Apr 5, 2011

"A friend of mine was in town the other night and we were goofing off in the studio when we started playing around with the hand percussion. He brought up using a contact mic on the doumbek when I remembered that I was in possession of a contact mic that I had never used. We taped it up to the head, sent it to the OTO Biscuit, and sure enough it was super duper awesome, so the next night I tried the same thing with my djembe and recorded the results. I apologize for my awful playing. This video was intended to demonstrate the range of tones possible with hand percussion sent through heavy effects unlike those typically associated with recorded percussion.

This video is my Toca Freestyle djembe (12" head) with the contact mic on the head and a dynamic microphone shoved up inside of it. For part of the video, these two mics were sent to the Presonus StudioLives and the onboard preamps were used. For both the head and the body channels, they were compressed and EQ'd by the StudioLives. The recorded audio is from the main outs of the StudioLives. The effects used (in order of appearance) are a Zoom 1202 (for it's reverb, delay, and pitch shifting), and a Digitech GSP5 (distortion and delay). For the bulk of the video, the mics were then passed through the OTO Biscuit (sample reducer, bit crusher, filter, pitch shifter, delay, waveshaper, step filter and lofi sampler) and into the StudioLives for mixing. Later in the video, a reverb from the StudioLives is put into play. Additional drums are provided by a Novation Drumstation v2 with sequencing done by an Akai MPC1000 (JJOS2XL functionality was utilized for grid sequencing.) In case you're wondering why I frequently rock the djembe back and forth, how open the bottom hole is determines pitch and tone to a certain degree. This effect is much more pronounced with distortion.

A Toca Freestyle doumbek was also utilized, however I didn't press the record button on the camera, so only the audio is present. This was miced up the same way as the djembe with the contact mic on the head and the dynamic microphone inside of the drum itself."

The Mellotron choir sound comes from the Roland XP-80 which MIDI input is connected to the MIDI output of the Q so I can play the Q and the XP-80 from the Q's keyboard. "Although it doesn't directly support it, the Octatrack can be set up to operate as a multiband compressor. Here's an acoustic drum sample loop (from the Elektron presets) on Track 1. As it stands, it has a raw feeling. After multiband compressing it sounds more polished. The prominent snare is tucked back with a bit of squashing and the kick has more oomph. You can then sample this version and have two versions at your disposal. Run one version during the intro+break and the other while the vocal is going. Or switch them in and out to make subtle variations in the groove. For comparison purposes, the track levels are set so that the overall loudness of both versions is about the same. HD available."

"To raise money for disaster relief in Japan, Sonic Youth is offering this Moog Rogue with power supply. This was used onstage by Lee Ranaldo in the late 90s for the NYC Ghosts + Flowers Tour. It is not currently working – it powers on and makes some sound. The envelope is audible but not the oscillators. For additional information about this type of synth, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moog_Rogue."

"the sleepdrone 6 is a hex oscillator analog drone machine

the sleepdrone 6 creates aggressive fighter bomber drones

also the ropes are connected to the wings of flying craft

at the end of the ropes there are hooks

the terror is then conveyed into packets of energy

the packets of energy are commanded by the sleepdrone 6

Wasp DeLuxe synthesiser by Electronic Dream Plant

via this auction

"Wasp synthesisers by EDP are rare, but this is a 'DeLuxe' with a 3 octave full size keyboard (not the standard 'touch' pad). This is ultra rare. In very good condition. Front plate is very good. 1 rotary knob is missing its yellow top (pic 4). Back plate has some light scratching (pic 5). Wood panels are all in good condition... This is a very special instrument and a piece of history. Works on battery (6 x size C) or mains converter..."

Oberheim Strummer

via this auction
"Oberheim came out with this in the early 1990s along with it’s product the Drummer. a midi drum pattern sequencer. The Strummer will transform your keyboard playing into a stunning and convincing performance featuring realistic guitar articulation. By looking at such factors as the range of the guitar, the number of notes being played, chord position, and the velocity of the performance. Strummer can transform the incoming MIDI data out into performance data emulating that of a real guitarist. Performance data may be delayed, echoed, harmonized, transposed and sent back out on multiple MIDI channels. In addition to control over strum direction and speed, the Strummer also features Chord Capture for real time single finger chords. Individual picking patterns and riffs may be assigned to a single key for real time performance playback. You can even control the number of "strings" being strummed via keyboard velocity. With Strummer Keyboard players now can emulate guitar techniques on their synthesizers and samplers to create incredibly authentic guitar sounds. The Strummer listens to chords played on a MIDI keyboard and plays them back through a MIDI sound source (synthesizer or sampler) just as they would be played from a guitar. Chord voicings will now be correct to accurately reproduce guitar sounds and the chords can actually be "strummed".

The Strummer can change the speed and direction of the "strums" just by changing the way the keyboard is played. Also, the Strummer has the ability to distinguish between chords and single notes, allowing chords to be sent over one MIDI channel, while single notes are sent out over a different channel (like a solo lead guitarsound).

In addition, the Strummer includes many other important features:
· MIDI Delay (Echo)
· Adjustable delay and decay rates
· Multiple MIDI channel output
· Velocity switching
· Keyboard splitting
· Chord voicing variations
· Arpeggiation
· Chord Capture (adjustable single finger chords)
· Transposition of MIDI delay (great for MIDI harmonizing)
· Synchronizes to MIDI timing clocks (External Sync)
· MIDI program changes
· Supports MIDI Sysex for storage transfer of user defined patches"
