Extreme Granulator Control Experiment

Extreme Granulator Control Experiment from bar|none on Vimeo.

"This is a fun test of the monome arc app platesHD controlling parameters of Robert Henke's M4L patch Granulator.

platesHD is basically a drawable LFO that is controlled by the monome arc. The HD version produces high resolution control ranges suitable for precision control way beyond midi's 127 CC values.

This works nicely for slowly scrubbing through a long sample or controlling things such as grain duration.

Thus was a quick iPhone grab, so the audio and video quality are not good. But that was not the goal here."

Extreme Granulator Abuse Part 2 from bar|none on Vimeo.

"This one you can't see the monome arc unfortunately, but we are scrubbing through a very long sample and exploring different treatments applied by plates HD controlling granulator, controlled by the arc.

Once you get some nice control curves and save them as presets, you can cycle through the presets. So your sweet spots become entire animated sequences of the grain synthesizer.

credit to Robert Henke for this amazing Granulator plug, Tehn at monome.org for the monome arc and original plates app. Stretta for this long sample from his modular that we are scrubbing."

Installing the KiwiTechnic's JX-3P Upgrade

via Burncards where you'll find the full post and more pics.
"Applying the chip-bed socket for the actual 3P Upgrade chip assembly is a breeze if your cleanup was thorough. The little guy will pop right into the pre-existing JX3P main board, and with a little solder flux, some soldering skill, permanently affixing the socket is pretty straightforward. One tip not mentioned (because this kit really is for technicians and/or experienced folk) is to match up the little half-circle divot in the chip-bed socket with that printed on the board, which incidentally, matches a similar marking on the chip itself: nothing good comes from installing chips upside-down!"

You can find the KiwiTechnic JX-3P upgrade kit here previously posted here.

The Unreleased Quasimidi Polymorph Demo CD

via Zon Pyles on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"In the late 90s, I was hired by Quasimidi – a synthesizer manufacturer from Germany – to produce a demonstration CD they would use to promote their new synthesizer called the Polymorph.
At this time – at least for the US market - Quasimidi had decided to switch to a direct-marketing approach where musicians would buy these synthesizers direct from the US distributor rather than buying them from music stores.
With this change in marketing, since musicians could no longer go down to the local music store to check out the synth, Quasimidi needed a way for musicians to hear what their new synthesizer, the Polymorph, sounded like.
This is where I come in.
I programmed a new bank of sounds and composed new sequences for the purpose of producing a Polymorph Demo CD so potential customers could hear how this synthesizer sounds and understand how the built-in analog-style step-sequencers worked and fit into the overall design concept of the instrument.
But, the plot thickens.
Right about the time when the Demo CD was finished and about to go to duplication and to whomever requested it from Quasimidi US, I get word that Quasimidi is no longer around.
They are kaput – closed –no longer a synthesizer company.
So, this Quasimidi Polymorph Demo CD was never released.
There is continued interest in this unique synthesizer/sequencer combination so I decided that putting the Demo CD tracks up would help those understand a bit more about the Polymorph and hear how it sounds.
Plus, it’s a nice little bit of synthesizer history that adds another chapter to the long-discontinued Quasimidi Polymorph.
On the first two tracks, my narration explains the features of the instrument and all consecutive tracks are original compositions I played live – with no overdubs – on one Polymorph.
I hope you enjoy them!
Cheers!
Zon Vern Pyles"

$297 iMSO-104 Mixed Signal Oscillscope for iOS Devices

$297 via Oscium

"iMSO-104 is the first mixed signal oscilloscope designed specifically for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Not only is it the smallest mixed signal oscilloscope in the world, it is also intuitive and easy to use, which is why it's the preferred scope for the next generation of inventors.

Intuitive hand gestures are used to navigate:

Trigger Level - Setting the analog trigger level is as easy as touching the right side of the screen and swiping either up or down. Buttons and knobs on test equipment are going the way of the horse and buggy.
Zooming – Changing the vertical & horizontal scales can be done by moving two fingers away from each other. And to zoom out, simply pinch the screen moving two fingers toward each other.
Repositioning Channels - Both the analog and digital channels are also easy to reposition. Touch and swipe the desired channel to any position on the screen to customize your display.

But don’t take our word for it. Download iMSO in the App Store and test drive our interface for free! Oscium is making test equipment more intuitive so that the inventor can spend more time debugging than fumbling with the test equipment interface.

Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF

via this auction

"Brand new. Highest quality parts available - no compromises. Artfully hand wired.

You are bidding on a Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF. The Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF sounds incredible. I love the brassiness you can get with this filter. The voltage control of the resonance is a great feature. Another vintage filter design sweetened by the synth guru Yves Usson. The Yusynth Diode Ladder VCF is a wonderful addition to every cabinet.

Here is some information about the Diode Ladder Filter from the Yusynth Website:

"Well, here is another classical and very special filter based on the EMS diode ladder filter!
This filter has a sound of its own and is the signature of the classical Pink Floyd's song "On the run".

My aim here was to design a quite faithful copy of this mythic filter while using components that minimize the burden of selecting a great number of matched transistors. This is why I used transistor arrays (CA3046, CA3096). However, because the CA3096 has become a rare part and is now overpriced, I have also designed a PCB with discrete trannies to replace it. As for all the other filters of my YUSYNTH project, I have added an input and an output buffer to adapt this filter to the input and output levels of my modular system.

I also added an input for voltage control of the resonance : everything was there in the original module but was not made available, probably because of the limited size of the patch pin matrix of the AKS/VCS3...

Because, my power supply standard is +15/-15V, I have included a power regulator IC (78L12) to convert +15V to +12V and a single transitor voltage regulator -15V to -9V (I wanted to use a 79L09 but changed my mind when I realized that this voltage regulator is quite a rare part and is difficult to source)." - Yves Usson

Basically, to generate the signal, only the "all " signal "off 292e which came in the signal of "Balanced Modulator", 3 outputs of B.M. then entered in the Frequency Shifter ... The second patch takes the same principle but without the control of the 281e. The self-generated signal by itself.

A la base, pour générer le signal, ce n'est que le "all" des sorties du 292e qui est entrée dans le signal du" Balanced Modulator" et ses trois sorties sont entrées ensuite dans le Frequency Shifter ...

Bill Walker Meets the Moog Lap Steel

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Apr 13, 2011

"Bill Walker stopped by the Moog Sound Lab to treat us to some incredible live looping improvisation on the Moog Lap Steel.

Ok the gear breakdown (in Bill's own words):

I was running the Moog lap steel through a very basic rig starting with a Keeley compressor set for light compression and a bit of signal boost, into and ethos preamp for both clean and overdriven tones ,into a TC Electronic G Sharp for some dynamic delay and reverb, and finally in to a Looperlative LP-1 8 track loop recorder. I use a Gordius Little Giant midi foot controller to send commands to the Looperlative. My two expression pedals control volume and feedback for my loops.

I use a number of looping techniques that include track speed manipulation, reverse loops, and quantize replace functions. The quantize replace function is what is creating the percolating sequencer sounding loops. I had my quantize replace set to a factor of 16, meaning every time I hit my quantize replace switch , the looper would record for only a 16th of the total loop length. You do this enough times and a cool sequence of notes starts to emerge. I'll often start a piece by first recording a blank loop, and then one by one I start to build a sequence of notes until a highly rhythmic pattern emerges, even out of completely rubato playing.
Its a harder technique to describe than it is to show :-)

Vegas 10 for all video loops & post render.
MidividGPU Hardware accelerated Midi controlled video module for realtime clip triggering & pre mix render.
Wavelab/SSL Duende for audio mastering.

Production Notes:

The 808 is the backbone of the composition. It runs synched in song mode for the whole track.

The KR-55 has a midi trigger mod. The TR-33 and Univox Jr-5 cannot be synched so they were sampled.

The pro-1 is layered with the 360 midibass. The Seinfeld slap is also from the 360. The 60s reverb tail on the bassline is from the intersound spring reverb.

The systech is used to flange the KR-55 in various parts of the song.

The chorus bells are the Korg DW6000 and Ensoniq ESQ-1 Layered together.

"Pay attention" is my voice through the Korg DVP-1 vocoder and stretched in Ableton.

The Deltalab harmomicomputer is used to pitch modulate the effects send of the female lead vocal in the bridge.

The "80s" reverb on the main 808 drum mix is from the TC electronics engine in the DM4800.

The prophet 5 is used to make the filtered counter melody in the bridge, and the climbing synth at the end of the bridge.

The Kawai sx-210 is used for the main melody in the bridge using the synth internal chorus & slightly notched to fit with the female vocal.

The big string chorus line is from the K2000. The ping pong delayed organ riffs are from the matrix 6.

The "Hey" are my voice sampled from another one of my tracks, with the RE-20 doing pitched tape delay effects.

The final Mix is 31 tracks wide spread over two layers on the dm-4800."

"Okay, I have never tried to hide it, but now it's really important to set the tone: I am a synth geek... now you can really see it in this video. I no longer need to justify my dance-less career, my failure as an olympian, and general lack of athletic smoothness in general. But, I CAN get down with the gear and that's what I'm here to do. (PS. Thank you to lightsaber kid for the inspiration and breaking ground to allow me to embarrass myself like this... I am not alone LOL)

OP-1 Details - Cluster Engine used with G-Force accelerometer controlling the synth engine. Added Spring reverb halfway through. I hope you enjoy the new video and can see a bit further into the effects possible with the G-Force sensor in the OP-1.

Note: Yes, I am watching the reflection of the iPhone camera screen in my tilted laptop screen so I am creepily looking down and to the side most of the time."

Twoness

YouTube Uploaded by attorks on Apr 12, 2011

"This one I made a few days ago and took some time to mix the multitrack audio from the live recording. And just after I made the recording I noticed that the melody used in this video was somewhat familiar to me. After searching my previous recordings I found out that the video 'Oneness' has a somewhat similar melody. So I named this video 'Twoness'. The music begins with an 8-step sequence on row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 driving the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO which sawtooth output is modulated by the GCS Steiner filter and drives the Blacet Miniwave. This produces a modulated sound on the MiniWave. Then I use the SoundPrism App on the iPad to generate chords. After that an 8-step sequence from the Synthesizers.com Q960 is added which is driving the Synthesizers.com Modular which output is lead through the Doepfer A-189-1 Voltage Controlled Bit Modifier to give it a crunchy sound. Then some Mellotron strings are played on the Roland XP-80 were after the Waldorf Q Keyboard comes in. The MIDI output of the Q Keyboard is connected to the XP-80's MIDI input so I can play both instruments on the keyboard of the Q. At some point an 8-step random sequence on row 2 of the MAQ16/3 driving the self-built Modular joins in. The solo's are performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1.

The music in this video tries to express the love and affection I feel for my dear friend Anne. She means the world to me.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website soon."

Oberheim Strummer demo

YouTube Uploaded by canmarcvancouver on Dec 3, 2010

"Here is an idea of what the classic Oberheim Strummer from 1991 can do to single notes playing a metal drum sound on a TX7.

The strummer is was designed to sit in between a midi keyboard controller and the desired midi sound device. In this case a dx7 and a tx7.

The Strummer's midi input "listens" to what a keyboardist plays and the midi output plays it back out modified to sound like a guitarist had strummed it instead. From a 3 note chord it can makes a 6 string riff. You can edit to make all sort of riff strokes.

Obviously nothing can sound as authentic as a real guitarist & the Strummer is no exeption.

However, The magic happens when it is used to trigger sounds it was not designed for, such as the metal drum sound here."
