The Ghazala Thereglyph

YouTube Uploaded by qrghazala on Apr 18, 2011

"Radio interference, traditionally a problem in audio, can be used to our advantage. By means of the Thereglyph instrument I would like to introduce to circuit-bending a concept I call radiopool.

While Leon's Theremin looks to onboard RF generation and sounds the same played anywhere, immersing a radiopool instrument to various depths within the RF field (the radiopool) yields changing results... similar to differing the length of the air column within a flute.

Here I'm playing the Thereglyph within the radiopool of a plasma globe - sometimes touched, sometimes not. For more info on this instrument and building one yourself, check-out my flickr gallery:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/moonbear3325/sets/72157626396557545/"

"Thereglyph With Plasma Globe

To radio-fy a bent instrument, first try to create an unstable audio circuit.

Benders are familiar with a potentiometer setting that places the circuit at the edge of crash. In this precarious configuration the circuit is very susceptible to interference.

Begin experimenting with RF generators nearby the circuit - a small plasma ball is a strong, but dirty, RF source. Move the ball. Place your hands between the circuit and the RF source. Experiment with adding antennae and metal plates to circuit points. Touch or wave hands nearby these extensions!"

M-RGT psyBOX

"psyBOX is a space-atmospheric soundscape generator - made to produce sounds, which can be used to create ambient and space- music. This particular tool can be called "pilotless". When you press "Start" button, you will plunge into the boundless world of the drifting waves woven in amazing sound textures. Depths of the outer space and the touch of the strange worlds, earth and heaven, dark and light sides of the existence – all these are the shades of the sound palette of the psyBOX. The processes inside that instrument live and develop independently creating all those landscapes. I recommend psyBOX as a source for inspiration when you need new ideas.

psyBOX uses the samples as a source of spectra splitting them into multiple grains-micro waves and combining them in clusters. Those clusters are formed randomly and they flow from one into another forming infinite drifting morphing. The two-layer scheme allows to expand tool possibilities making the sound more condensed and multilayered, adding more volume to the panorama. You can familiarise yourself with the possibilities of psyBOX by listening to sound examples or by loading the demo version which is accessible here." You can find samples here.

Ionic EMS VCS3 Synthesizer Early Model 1969 first production SN 118

via this auction

"This synth is fully functional but the case is cracked and it has a couple of mods that were removed except for the IEC connection. From what I've understood this is from the first production - with dins. (around 20-50 were made of this type with German style din jacks instead of 1/4 according to Robin Wood.) This synth was approved by David Cockerell himself with his initials on the serial tag and completed 22nd of December, 1969. Pretty much all orig. parts inside. Definitely needs to be recapped. I'm assuming it was owned at one time by NYU as the sticker implies. This has a sticker indicating that it was the Ionic Industries Inc Putney VCS3 carefully placed over the EMS graphic (Electronic Music Studios (London) LTD VCS so I'm guessing this was when Ionic was distributing EMS in the states."

Ionic also made an EMS SYNTHI clone in a full blown keyboard case called the Ionic Performer. See the Ionic label below for more. SN SE / 118

iPod Touch on eBay

"With Badlion’s Garage Synth anyone can be a musician. Just pick a beat and play some tunes over it, add some effects and you already have a hot track to listen to. Don't forget to connect your loudspeakers or headphones to get the full experience!

> selectable keyboard – flash & rainbow / basic minimal
> 48 beats – changeable volume and tempo
> 8 samples – 4 octaves
> 44 fx – loop or stop (once) functions
> tilt – you can pitch notes by tilting the phone

Sounds are not mixed or mastered, so they are not studio quality. Hence garage. Updates will bring you new sounds and features.

The following sounds can be found in the synth:
- samples: analog synthesizer
- beats: paperbox, metal pin, mac keyboard
- fx: buzzsaw, blower, lawnmower, drill, kids' toys, guitar, acoustic noises, voices.

If you get the hang of it, you’ll be hanging out with it all the time.

If you have second thoughts about purchasing:

a) try the free version (The Badlion's Lite)
b) see this independent review and watch the iPad edition video http://www.cutthenoise.com/2010/08/14/badlions-garage-synth-for-ipad-and-iphone-review/"

RIP Roger Nichols - Creator of the Wendel Sampling Computer

http://www.rogernichols.com/

Update: see site for donations.

via Wikipedia: "Roger Scott Nichols (September 22, 1944 – April 9, 2011)[1] was an American seven-time Grammy Award-winning recording engineer and producer. Nichols was best known for his work with the group Steely Dan and John Denver, but his work includes numerous major music acts including the Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, Crosby Stills & Nash, Al Di Meola, Roy Orbison, Cass Elliot, Plácido Domingo, Gloria Estefan, Diana Ross, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Rickie Lee Jones, Kenny Loggins, Mark Knopfler, Eddie Murphy, Michael McDonald, James Taylor, and Toots Thielemans, among others. In 2006 Nichols' work was formally recognized by The Recording Academy (Grammys) Producers and Engineers Wing."

"In 1978, Nichols pioneered the technique of "digital drum replacement" by inventing the Wendel sampling computer, which was used to provide some of the drum and percussion sounds on Steely Dan's album, Gaucho, notably the song "Hey Nineteen". This technology is now commonplace in music production around the world."
