Howler Drone

Howler Drone from starvelab on Vimeo.

"A self-modulating modular analog patch, "Howler Patch" is designed to drone and change with random patterns over a long stretch of time. In this example, I've fed a recording of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" into it, using the EH V256 vocoder to modulate the voice with the drone-synthesis from my modular patch.

This example contains no overdubs or live-tweaking of any kind. I just turned it on, started playing the "Howl" track, and walked away."

First Impressions on the Roland Jupiter-80

via an anonymous reader:

"Had 15 mins on it just now Matrix....:))

I hope this doesn’t come across as a hard sell – you know my roots lay in voltages and pulses after all....but I have to say I really couldn’t leave it alone....:)

Beautiful to play – infectious even – only with very limited patches loaded.

Very serious build quality.

Ridiculously rich and smooth sound – ultra hi-fi at the outputs.

Loads of bottom. Loads of warmth. Detailed Tops. Lush effects.

Original Jupiter 8 Main Voice Architecture but deeper:-

Upper and Lower Voice plus Percussion and Solo.

Upper and Lower Voices are each made up of 4 full Poly Voice Patches with can be extensively edited – all parameters.....:)))

Reminiscent of all the good things about JD-990/Wavestation AD but much nicer – not easy to leave alone once you start playing....

Very much a players instrument – keyboard action and response is brilliant.

The SuperNatural voice design makes it very expressive without you even knowing what makes it work.

As Mr Kakehashi states – The Jupiter name always represented Roland’s flagship keyboard/synthesizer – the fact that it was analogue is secondary to the original design concept – that was all that was available to Roland engineers at the time.

The haters on the web seem to wish Roland would re-release the original Jupiter-8. Making a retro 8 voice poly these days is probably much easier in many ways. Making a new flagship players synthesizer that inspires playing and may just prove to be a future classic is a much taller order and in the 15 minutes I just had on it they may just have achieved that......:))))

Yes it has Pianos and Organs and Strings too but the original Jupiter 8 Patch Sheet and Presets were full of Sitar, Strings, Brass and Flutes too – very very bad they were too!!!!!

I want one put it that way...:)))))"

There is only one TimbreModulator but with selectable input source: Osc 1, Osc2 or even both! Instead of the 2nd Timbremodulator there is a 'real' Ringmodulator, yes, the real deal as far as software can do it! The mod Oscillator for RingMod ranges from approx. 7Hz to 100Hz, so the typical 50Hz AC is possible. As RingMod generates the sum and difference of the input signals it can give quite a low punch. This one is with selectable input source: Osc 1, Osc2, plus the output of TimbreMod too! As both of these soundshapers have great capabilities to transform the signal of the oscillators they have both independant outputs and are treated as secondary soundsources.

Thus the new Swamp has quite increased sonic capabilities at this stage already. Anyway the SF2 oscilators come with 256 carefully selected waves though some maybe suited better for RingMod while others are better suited for TimbreMod.

Of course there is the wellknown resonant 24dB LowPass filter with a 4 channel adaptive mod mixer so 4 source can be mixed to modulate Cutoff. This is great to create new mixes of LFO modulations.

The output sections has increased a lot. Besides the delay there is a stereo Flanger and Stereo Reverb with PreDelay and LowCutoff to remove lower frequencies for an optimized Reverb response (use this if the rev 'shatters' in low range.

As Modsources there are 3 LFO, 1 S&H, 1 Double LFO with Phase shifting for one which is best useful for the flanger. Also there is a new Gator which effect can be mixed (w. optionaö modulation) on the output level so you can adjust the amount of gating on the output, with enhanced routings including modulating pan of the delayed signal. Also Aftertouch and Modwheel are used extensively as optional modsources.

have fun

ROLAND MPU 101 MIDI to CV CONVERTER

via this auction
"Controls up to four individual synths with various modes and trigger functions.

For example the 4 voice button will trigger each synth sequentially eg:- if you have four CV synths connected the first note of the midi sequence or arpeggio that is input will be played by synth one, the second note of the sequence or arpeggio will be played by synth two etc... etc... > fifth not will again trigger synth one etc...etc... as you might imagine the range of possibilities are endless and this can produce some very unique and amazing sequences with the onus obviously on the expertise of the synthesist in question to produce the magic from the various synths connected.

The same type feature also exists for two and three voices if you have two or three synths connected.

MIDI TO CV INTERFACE

The MPU-101 is unique in that it converts MIDI data into analog signals. When the MPU-101 is connected to a MIDI sending unit, a conventional 1 -volt/octave Cv/gate synthesizer such as the SH-101, SH-2, SH-5, SH-07, System-100M etc... can be controlled by MIDI data.
Other voltage-controlled devices can also be controlled. For example, you can automatically synchronize lighting equipment with your performance.
The gate signals can also be used as trigger signals to control a percussion sound source like the Boss PC-2 or HC-2, a sampling unit such as the Boss DSD-2, or a digital delay, for example the Boss DE-200.

The MPU-101 can expand your MIDI system's potential just as much as your imagination allows.
The MPU-101 has four output channels, each with pitch control voltage, gate signal, and dynamics control signal outputs. Up to four CV synthesizers can be controlled by MIDI data.
ln addition to the key information, other MIDI data including velocity. bender modulation, after touch, and volume information is converted into analog signals. Complicated MIDI data can completely be converted.
The MID channel can be assigned to one of 1 to 16.

Five operation modes are provided for a variety of applications.

1. Mono Mode: Four CV synthesizers can be controlled by MIDI data transmitted on four different MIDI channels.
The bass, melody, and other parts of a composition played by different CV synthesizers can be controlled by MIDI data transmitted on different MIDI channels.

2. 2-Voice Mode: MIDI data for up to two notes is converted into CV/gate signals and comes through outputs 1 and 2.

3. 3-Voice Mode: MIDI data for up to three notes is converted into CV/gate signals and comes through outputs 1, 2, and 3.

4. 4-Voice Mode: MIDI data for up to four notes is converted into CV/gate signals and comes through outputs 1, 2, 3, and 4.

5. Special Mode: MIDI data for the highest note, the lowest note. and the latest note is converted and comes through different outputs.

A MIDI Out jack is provided in addition to the MIDI In and Thru jacks. Up to 8 CV synthesizers can be controlled by combining two MPU-101's.
When the connected MIDI sending unit is in the poly mode, three different assign modes are accessible, then the MIDI key information can be
assigned to four outputs in three different ways. An Octave Transpose function simultaneously shifts the pitch control voltage of four CV outputs one octave up or down.

A Gate Indicator on each output channel confirms the flow of the gate signals."

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s Synthesizer #01: Bass Detonation

YouTube Uploaded by rezfilter on May 1, 2011

"Here's a brief first look at the Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s analogue synthesizer [www.analoguesolutions.com].

This beast of a synth represents the latest in Analogue Solutions' Leipzig line and incorporates a vast number of new features, most notably the 8-step on-board sequencer which can be synced and controlled in a vast number of innovative ways (midi, LFO, VCO, etc.)

This video serves as a first glimpse of the synth - yes, it's a teaser. The evolving sound uses the Leipzig's on-board step sequencer, however the pitch of the notes is controlled via MIDI. The sequencer can also be stepped manually via a MIDI keyboard.

Sequencer reset is handled via accent (or using heavy velocity on a MIDI note).

A beat was added to provide some context for the evolving bass line.

Enjoy."

New EMS Synthi A's are Shipping!

via digitana_electronics on Muff's

"Hi all..thought this might be better in a new thread as the previous one was all about 'speculation' etc about when new EMS(Cornwall) Synthi A's and VCS3's would be shipping again.

Well the Synthi A's have started shipping. These are photos were kindly sent to me by someone who has been on the waiting list since 1998. He received it a few days ago..

You'll notice it still retains the Bulgin AC socket and there is no prestopatch socket. I think keeping the Bulgin socket is good idea on a Synthi A(S) as an IEC socket would look out of place to my eyes.. Pity the prestopatch connector wasn't kept though..

Anyway the buyer also had Robin add a bunch of mods before shipping it :-

Osc sync on Osc 2
Hi/lo frequency range on all 3 oscillators
Osc 3 stabilisation (this is done as standard for Osc 1 & 2)
VC shape on Osc 2 & 3
Patchable inverter
Switchable filter mode 18/24 dB
Switchable filter unslew
VC filter response

cheers
