MeeBlip Reloaded

via MeeBlip
"We’ve updated the MeeBlip DIY hacker kit after receiving lots of feedback from builders. The biggest change (apart from the color) is that the I/O jacks are now mounted on the bottom of the board. This will make it much easier to mount in a case or behind a panel. There are a number of other tweaks, too:
A new power switch on the top right of the panel
We’ve upgraded to a 1 Amp 7805 voltage regulator
The MIDI Channel DIP switch has been moved to the bottom rear edge of the board
We’ve removed the USB power connector and 3.5 mm audio jack
Analog and digital grounds are now split at the DAC for lower noise

We’ve also reduced the price to $69. The Full Board Kit includes the circuit board, components, programmed microcontroller and knobs. You can use your own 9 VDC power supply, or get one of our regulated wall warts for $9.

Does not include a case or panel overlays — that part is up to you. Be sure to share photos of your creations in the forum!

MeeBlip kits and accessories are available on our Get One page."

YUSynth Saw Animator D.I.Y Module

YouTube Uploaded by kenzie2029 on May 13, 2011

"Here is my first DIY module for my modular synthesizer. It was made from a kit I bought from Bridechamber and the panel was custom built in the synthesizers.com format which matches the vintage Moog modular synthesizer.

The Module is called the YUSynth Saw Animator. Here is the description from Yusynths website: The Saw Animator module is a very interesting module when you whish to get that FAT sound, usually obtained with two or more sawtooth VCOs, but you are short of VCOs. You can get this typical sound with only one sawtooth VCO, thanks to Bernie Hutchins (JAES, 1981). The Digisound 80 has this wonderful module and Scott Bernardi designed a version of its own. The present module is a somehow simplified but yet efficient version. To get the best of this module, it must be used in conjunction with a mixer. I chose not to integrate a mixer within the module in order to benefit from the dry outputs which are very useful when used with a LFO instead of a VCO. When used with a sawtooth LFO and inputing fixed CVs in the MOD inputs, one can achieve some interesting phase shifted modulators such as quadrature modulation. Well the possibilities are numerous and it's up to your imagination."

nebulatronix Circle Sequencer - "rotate" WORKING!

YouTube Uploaded by infindebula on May 13, 2011
follow-up to this post.
"Here it is ... my customized MIDIbox 808 sequencer, called the "nebulatronix Circle Sequencer". The enclosure isn't ready yet.

To get this working, I first needed to accommodate for some miswired digital output ICs. Thorsten from ucapps helped me hack the OS to resolve this. Then I spent a few days learning PIC assembly code in order to write the 6 lines it took to implement the "rotate" function on the centre encoder!

You'll see that the encoder serves two purposes: (1) to select the instrument, (2) when turned while "shift" (one of the black buttons) is held down, it "rotates" the pattern as you turn the knob.

This is not me trying to show off my drum programming abilities. I'm just demonstrating a unique feature of this drum sequencer."

moovmi overview

moovmi overview from k-devices on Vimeo.

"Moovmi is a Max For Live Video-to-MIDI device that produces midinote sequences from video data analysis. It works with both video files and webcam as sources.
The video source is reduced to a low-res grid where each cell generates midinotes in a predefined interval and pitch, while the velocity is determined by the luminance of the cell.
The user can influence the midi sequences by processing the source with video parameters such as brightness, contrast, saturation, threshold, colors feedback, etc…
Moovmi can be used for :
• semi-random drum pattern generation
• experimental melodies and chords
• sonification of video installations (using the fullscreen feature)
Moovmi is very easy to use: just select a video source and midinote sequences will start immediately!
Moovmi comes unlocked : owners can open, edit, and re-use parts of this device as they prefer (nice!).

Yamaha CS01II plays JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH by Depeche Mode

YouTube Uploaded by peahix on May 12, 2011
follow-up to Yamaha CS01II plays NEW LIFE by Depeche Mode
"Download a higher quality copy here: http://snd.sc/mCXyWu

The Yamaha CS01II is the first real synthesizer I ever owned. I got it when I was about 14 years old, back in 1985 or so. I noticed that I could get reasonable approximations of most of the sounds from Depeche Mode's "Speak & Spell" album with it, but at the time I didn't have the means to make decent multi-track cover versions, even after I got a 4-track.

Recently I was studying the Depeche Mode 5.1 surround mixes, and realized that I could clearly hear all the distinct parts of alot of the songs, so I decided to throw together some renditions using just my trusty old Yamaha CS01II as the sole sound source (including the drums), just to see how close I could get to the originals.

This version has no vocals at all, but otherwise it comes pretty close to the original. The actual musical arrangement is about 100% accurate. The sounds themselves are of course only approximations, and most of them don't have the same level of timbral detail as the ARP originals. I sequenced the whole thing in Cubase via a Kenton Pro Solo going into the custom CV/Gate inputs on my CS01II, recording each monophonic line in one at a time. Cubase provided the reverb and EQ, otherwise it's all CS01II.

The trickiest bits to transcribe accurately were the brass stabs and arpeggiator in the bridge, both originally played on a Roland Jupiter 4. The brass stabs are a series of 4-note chords, which of course I had to record in one note at a time, since you can't play chords on the CS01II.

The drums also require multiple passes. For instance, the "timbale" part required a white noise burst (band-pass EQ'd) and a low sine wave (hi-pass EQ'd). The kick and snare also have multiple components.

Sorry for the boring repeat visuals- just can't be bothered! :)"

"I was determined to do something different but then this sequence came up and I could not resist. The music begins with a 6-step sequence on row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 driving the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO which sawtooth output is modulated by the GCS Steiner filter and drives the Blacet Miniwave. This produces a modulated sound on the MiniWave. Then a 6-step sequence on row 2 of the MAQ16/3 driving the self-built Modular joins in. The Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer is shifted by a 16-step pattern on row 3 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 where not all steps are active. Then a Mellotron strings bass is played on the Roland XP-80 were after the Waldorf Q Keyboard comes in with a string sound. The solos are performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 which output is lead through a Zoom G1 effect device. I noticed a few minor glitches in the audio after I rendered the video which are also in the original audio. I will try to correct that later on for the mp3 file on my website using the multi-track recording.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website."

Metasonix TS-22 Pentode Filterbank Serial Number 2

via this auction

"The TS-22 Pentode Filterbank is an analog filter that utilizes four unique vacuum-tube bandpass filters. That provides you with four independently sweep-able and tune-able filters over a four-octave range. Capable of complex filtering, the TS-22 lets you sweep the lows, mids, highs, etc. independent of one another or you can latch them all in unison. Tweaking can be accomplished from the knobs on the unit or via external CV sources from other analog equipment. A round window at the center of the unit provides a view of the glowing tubes at work inside!

The TS-22's unique use of vacuum-tubes gives it a unique sound that is analog, clean and sometimes unpredictable. Also included is a vacuum-tube pentode voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) to shape the effect of the filter on your sounds. Adjustable resonance that leads to self-oscillation for each filter is also a treat! CV inputs to control the filter sweeps and VCA allow easy integration with your existing analog synths! The TS-22 is not your typical filter, but its unique approach may do wonders for your synth sounds, loops, samples and/or human voices!

Product review:
"WHAT A BEAST! Nothing like the FAT thick tube sound this thing pushes. Not like the newer TM-2 they are selling now. This is the real deal. Its not going to give you that pristine prissy glass sound of "liquid analogue"; its going to beat your face in! So, I cant say its the absolute most clean and clear filter out there, but for what it is designed for, it DEFINITELY does the trick! I've gotten some WILD stuff from this thing. Try sending squarepusher through this baby......OUCH"

"Built like a tank, solid rackmount unit. Could be used anywhere. Just dont throw it down a flight of stairs and you should be fine....it does have glass TUBES inside! LOTS OF TUBESSSSS!!!!!!"

"Excellent device. Does things NOTHING ELSE CAN DO. This is an ORIGINAL old school piece of gear! Because of the shitty market demand, people will only buy cheap little stomp-box devices. People dont appreciate the beauty of true vintage synthesizers anymore. This thing is UNIQUE and RARE!!! If you see one, GET IT!!! Hell, I'll buy another one off you. It took me two years of searching, finally a friend told me a local band had one for some reason. A bit pricey, but worth it. From what I understand, less than a dozen were made. It is a unique part synthesizer history---REALLY! If I lost this, I would probably kill someone. Then I would begin the long hike back to tube synth heaven--maybe in another 2 years I'd find a replacement....""
