Oberheim OB-12 Display Replacement

via Oli: "The OB-12 interface operation relies on a 240 x 64 LCD module, for which the originals are mostly failing by now. I have found a good blue/white display which is compatible with the OB-12, and has a good contrast and viewing angle, and bright back lighting, and fits within the synth case. The photo provided here is from my ailing camera, and the actual module is somewhat crisper in contrast, brighter, and has a strong clear blue coloration.

However, the replacement module requires some minor modification prior to installation. One OB-12 owner has offered to may me (Oliver, not Matrix) to prepare a module for him to install, as he doesn't want to do his own soldering/de-soldering. I thought I would offer the service to anyone else who may be interested. I am charging $50 Australian dollars (+ costs) for my service. If enough people are interested, then there would be some savings on parts and combined shipping from supplier to me.

Cost for a single module from futurlec U.S.A. is $US65, plus $US14 shipping to me. I think combined shipping for more modules would still be $14 total, shared between participants. I will supply wires and connectors at my own cost, from my $AU50 fee (it's just easier than accounting for their costs).

If anyone would like to do this work for themselves, instructions will soon be available at the 'Friend's of OB-12' Yahoo! group.

What's involved in the LCD module replacement:

Basically I will prepare a module with my own custom modifications, and send to participating OB-12 owners for you to install in accordance with my included instructions.

From me:
- Purchase LCD module, shipped to me in Australia
- Solder custom 19 pin header onto module board
- Desolder back light LED supply power resistor from bottom side of board, and re-solder to top side of board, to allow module to fit in OB-12 case
- Construct LED back light power supply lead/connector
- Solder LED back light power supply lead to module board
- Test your new display in my OB-12
- Ship display and installation instructions to OB-12 you

From OB-12 owner:
- Email me, or contact me through 'Friend's of OB-12' Yahoo! group, BY NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 1 (at least for first batch)
- Provide postage details, so I can provide postage quote
- Make payment to my PayPal account
- Receive display in post
- Install display according to instructions. Installation is straight forward, requiring just a Phillips/Pozidrive screwdriver
- Get back to me via email, if you require further support

Cheers,
Oli

Update via Alfa66 in the comments:

"We have now another option for replacing the display which will allow to control the contrast:

With this display, you will need to modify slightly your ribbon cable. Cut pins 4 and 20, connect to 10k ohm as described. For Ground -connect to the white wire of the LCD backlight (yellow is +, white is ground)"

Hope you will find the video useful."

"Architecture and features
Oscillators and Sound Generators

Each of the 12 voices has 2 Oscillators. Each Oscillator has sawtooth, triangle and square/pulse waves, mixable in variable proportions.

In Oscillator 1, each waveform can be modified: saw's "spread" parameter adds a second detuned sawtooth, triangle "wrap" progressively clips the waveform adding inharmonic content, and pulse wave has variable pulse width; PWM is also available, and the modulation source can be chosen from LFO1, LFO2 or OSC ENV. Oscillator 2 can frequency-modulate (FM) Oscillator 1.

In Oscillator 2, saw and triangle waveforms cannot be modified/ modulated: only the pulse wave can be varied; PWM is also available. Unlike OSC1, the second oscillator provides fine detune and coarse detune +-24 steps, and keyboard tracking may be disengaged. Oscillator 2 can be synced to Oscillator 1.

An Oscillator Common section is provided to balance the mix of OSC1 and OSC2, the ring modulator and the noise generator.

Multimode Dual Filter

The OB•12 has two VCF, each one being a 12db (2 pole) filter.
For each filter, mode can be chosen between high-pass, low pass, band-pass and off.
Filters routing can be parallel, split or serial, the latter resulting in a 24db (4 pole) filter.
Cutoff, resonance, modulators and keyboard tracking affect both VCFs.

The Delta parameter, available in parallel and split mode, change the cutoff frequency of the second filter; by using bandpass mode for both filters and by widening their cutoff frequencies, two formants peak may be formed, creating vocal-like timbres.

Besides the OB•12, 1983's OSC OSCar synthesizer is the only synth having this facility; in the OSCar this function is called "separation" and has a dedicated knob in the filter section, unlike the OB•12, whose Delta parameter is inside filter's edit menu.

Oberheim OB-12 Virtual Analog Synthesizer with Custom Blue Buchla Style Knobs

"Oberheim ob 12 for sale in fairly good condition complete with manual and a flight case that it has been stored in when not in use. Few marks on ends and small dink on face underneath the high/6k graphic slider - see photo's. Display light flickers every now and again and sometimes goes off but comes back on again when synth next on - new display unit for sale on E-bay -otherwise all working."

An interesting side note is you can see the side panels are grey painted wood. I have an OB-12 and I swear on mine the grey panels feel plastic/synthetic. I obviously don't want to scratch it to check. The undersides have a gap that that make the panels thin enough to dig into your fingers when moving. If you have an OB-12 I'd be curious to know what yours are like.

Another interesting side note regarding the Buchla style knobs is I believe there were only two Oberheim synths after the original company folded. The Gibson Oberheim OB-Mx co-designed by Don Buchla and the Viscount Oberheim OB-12.

It does look nice with the blue knobs. It reminds me I am going to likely need new knobs for my XTk. The originals are beginning to break down and feel sticky.

Oberheim OB-12 with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Oberheim OB-12 synth in perfect condition, it even has the plastic covering on the screen still. This synth has no defects and is in the original box. The manual is completely legible, however it had an unfortunate run in with a cup of coffee, reference the photos.

Here is an excerpt from the manual: the Oberheim OB-12 is a synthesizer designed to be fully controllable in real time, the main feature of the famous analog synthesizers. And the huge advantage this provides is a user-friendlyness which was perhaps being lost with the latest digital synthesizers, with programming procedures too complex for many people to attempt. However, this does not mean the OB-12 offers limited potential. As well as giving it an 'analog feel', the OB-12 also use the most sophisticated digital technology for signal generation and processing."

Oberheim OB-SX Preset Analog Synthesizer SN 920104 & Preset Patch Bank Demos

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here we have a RARE Oberheim OB-SX synth made in 1982/USA (sourced from New Jersey, July 2021). It was the second model in the OB range, slotted in-between the OB-X and the OB-Xa. This one is 4-voice polyphonic and has 56 programs on board. The model was introduced by Oberheim, tailored for live use. At the time, the OB-X was well expensive, so this was marketed at an attractive lower price. Its a wee bit smaller than the other OB models, measuring just 87 x 50 x 12 cms...weighing around 16 Kgs. The remit was "bring out a compact performance synth with THE best Oberheim sounds on board". Much of the same circuitry (80%?) as the OB-X was used to produce the distinctive polyphonic sounds. OB-SX is loaded with 56 presets, basically; but every sound can be "shaped" to some degree (eg adjusting the Filter Frequency control/detune of VCO 2). The left panel is always "live". There is a video on YouTube of me (KKGB/Doug McKendrick) playing an earlier OB-SX. You can hear some of the fat (phat) sounds and some rubbish playing at the same time. Lucky you! Hit YouTube and simply enter "OB-SX"......."

The only one I found with "McKendrick" is the following from Sue McKendrick on the previous grey faced model.

OB-SX 1970's demo Klassickeys GB

video upload by Sue McKendrick

The following are a few demos of a blue striped model from Pete Moulton that I found, including a run through the presets:
"Introduction to the OB-SX, a very underated synth that is a hybrid between the OB-X and OB-Xa. The OB-SX shares the voice architecture of the OB-X, but uses the discreet CEM chips later found on the OB-Xa. The OB-SX first appeared in 1980 as a preset/variable version of the OB-X.

A short demo demo of the brass sounds from A1, B1 and C1, using the variable controls. If the sounds in your OB-SX are different to mine, you could have a rare machine, as OB-X users could send in a tape of their favourite sounds to be burned into the OB-SX EPROMs. Also mine will have slightly different tunnings and voice calibrations to yours."

Playlist: 1. Oberheim OB-SX Part 1 (description above)
2. Oberheim OB-SX Part 2
Using only the A1 Brass Ensemble program as a starting point and the 7 variable controls on the front panel, a variety of sounds can be coaxed out of the OB-SX with considerable ease. The OB-SX might be your best bet it you cannot get your hands on an OB-Xa or OB-X. SHOW LESS

Oberheim OB-12

via this auction

Not the best shots, but I was just thinking you don't see these often. I'm curious how many were made. For those new to the OB-12, it was a virtual analog synth by a company named Viscount who mainly made organ synths. They licensed the Oberheim name and made the OB-3 and OB-3 squared organ modules as well as the OB-12. The prototype OB-12 was white. Update: link updated.

18:06 Outro with OB-X8 and OB-6 (Notch Dream patch and OB-6 filter mode patch with delay)

If you have an OB-X8 and you're not using the Page 2 features, you're missing out on half the synth. Nobody seems to talk about these features or explore them. The OB-X8 is indeed a very versatile synth capable of many different timbres, not just the classic sounds from the original OB series. There are so many things you can do with modulation envelopes, LFO phase inversion, different SEM filter modes, and layering, just to name a few things. The OB-6 is limited by comparison. I find it pretty frustrating to use sometimes after making sounds on the OB-X8. It does have other tricks up its sleeve of course, and it sounds beautiful. It's definitely its own brand of OB with its own flavor. Similarly, the addition of 3 SEM filter modes and ability to mix and match OB-8, OB-Xa, and OB-X components and features make the OB-X8 its own beast, and I feel like a lot of people don't really appreciate that. It is so much more than a reissue.

Rant aside, my main motivation for this was to see how close I could get to emulating an OB-6 filter mode sweep. I think I got pretty good results here regardless if the sound is close or not, but I'll let you be the judge. Let me know what you think. There's no way to match perfectly because the filters sound different, and I believe a lot of it has to do with the differences in the oscillators, and maybe gain staging. The OB-X8 filters are more aggressive, with more prominent resonance. Crank the resonance on the OB-6 with the filter in the notch position. It barely does anything. Do the same on the OB-X8 and you'll hear those "sing-song harmonics" as you sweep the filter. And although they're not as loud as they are in the other filter modes, they are still very noticeable. There is also something magical about the high pass filter in the OB-6. Again it might be due to the oscillators. I find the high pass on the OB-6 very comforting, not that the one in the OB-X8 is bad in any way at all. It's just different. I also find the notch filter in the OB-X8 to be more "chewy". This is probably the result of it being more aggressive. In a battle of the filters, I'd choose the OB-X8 for lowpass and notch, and the OB-6 for bandpass and highpass. Anyway, I'm sorta ranting again.

Ultimately, I hope you enjoy these sounds and if you have an OB-X8, I strongly encourage you to explore all of the Page 2 features. I'm sure you've noticed that I have the pinstripe overlay for my X8. While I do prefer the pinstripe look, I really got it because it has the Page 2 function labels on it, and this is huge for me. Page 2 doesn't have to be menu-diving, it can simply be shift functions, which tons of synths have and they're easy to use. Having the labels and changing Page 2 parameters on the panel is a game changer for me. I don't have great eyes, so the small screen can get tiresome after awhile. If you don't want to splurge for the overlay (it's pretty expensive), maybe there's another option for adding labels to your synth. For me it's totally worth it.

Lastly, I think I may have inadvertently ripped someone off in the outro. It sounds like it could be from a movie, but I can't place it.

Enjoy the video.

Oberheim OB-12 Review & Demo Featuring Shaggy and Scooby Doo
