Boss DR 55 Dr. Rhythm Analog Drum Machine Demo

Published on Oct 19, 2017 Sound Provider

"Another Drum machine we use for the Sound Provider Sound Banks.( http://www.sound-provider.eu/ ), archaic to program but super punchy sound

The Boss Dr55 "Dr. Rhythm" Drum Machine is a early 80s vintage Japan write-step drum machine.

Some words about it from VintageSynth.com:
"The DR-55 Dr. Rhythm was released in 1980 and was one of the first step-write-style drum machines, and it was the first rhythm machine in BOSS' successful Dr. Rhythm Series. It was small, inexpensive and easy to use - perfect for musicians at any level. Incredibly basic controls and sounds made this drum machine an instant hit among guitarists and other musicians looking for drum accompaniment to practice along with and even record into their home recordings.

The DR-55 could store up to six 16-step drum patterns plus an additional two 12-step patterns. The 12-step patterns allowed for 3/4 and 6/8 rhythms. A variation switch allowed you to, on-the-fly, alter the pattern playing. There were only four sounds in the DR-55 which included Snare Drum, Kick Drum, Rim Shot and Hi-Hat. The sounds are comparable to Roland's CR-series of rhythm machines as well as some of Roland's cheaper TR-machines (like the TR-505, TR-606). You can globally adjust the Volume, Tempo, Tone and Accent for the drum sounds.

Step-Mode programming was accomplished in a fairly basic manner: Switch the DR-55 into Write Mode and select a sound from the Sound switch, and use the Start button to place the sound and the Stop button to step through the 16 (or 12) beat pattern. Only Kick, Snare, Rim Shot and Accent could be placed in a pattern in step mode--the Hi-Hats could only be programmed as either Off, 8ths, 12ths or 16ths via the Hi-Hat switch. Primitive programming for sure, but very simple and effective.

Today, where its sounds can easily be sampled, the DR-55 may seem pretty useless. However it does have an authentic sense of nostalgia being BOSS' first DR-machine and also quite a successful early programmable drum machine. You may not find a need for such an instrument today although it does make a great conversation piece! It has been used by New Order, The Cure, Chris Carter, Sisters of Mercy, Chris & Cosey, Xeno & Oaklander, Soft Cell and Thomas Dolby."

Boss DR-55 MIDI Sync

"As well as being able to sync the DR-55 to midi, with the flick of a switch, the DR-55 can now sync to its own clock and will transmit 24 midi clocks per metronome and midi start and stop according to the DR-55 internal clock and run status. It generates the 24 midi clocks per metronome by transmitting 6 MIDI clocks for every pulse of the DR-55 internal clock"

Roland BOSS Dr Rhythm DR-55

"Roland BOSS Dr Rhythm DR-55 Analog Drum Machine. The DR-55 was one of the first analog drum synths available. It can be programmed with 8 loops: six 16-step loops and two 12-step loops. Tempo, tone, and accent are adjustable via knobs that still provide a good grip and decent resistance to turning. All switches and knobs test OK.

Sounds generated are comparable to 505s and 606s, as well as Roland's CR series. It is an easy synth to incorporate into even a modern workflow."

Korg MS-20/Boss DR-55/DSI Prophet 6 - Tascamitch

Published on Dec 4, 2016 Jae Ryan

"I have a friends DR-55 analog drum machine for a week and wanted to record a quick jam with it before I let it go. It sounds great. The person I got it off had a very small but neat cassette based studio and made me kind of miss the fidelity and restrictions that always came with such a set-up, so I set out to try and recreate that vibe in a DAW based environment.

All the instruments are recorded to UAD's Studer tape plug-in with the Cassette preset. The MS-20's baseline is hitting a Strymon Timeline in stereo and I am manually riding the feedback knob with my free hand during the jam. The DR-55 is hitting the trigger in on the MS-20 patch bay. The prophet 6 is the swirly held pad sound that comes in the beginning and fades on the end. I manually automated it after the fact to make it even more dizzy. The DR-55 is going to a 224 reverb with most of the high end chopped off!"

Boss DR-110 Graphic
Boss DR-220E
Korg MiniPops MP7
Sequential Circuits DrumTraks
Boss DR-55

To make use of these six project files (.mpj)
simply place them within the 'PROJECT' folder located on your Roland MC-101 SD Card.

To load the individual Drum Machine:

Press the 'Project' button on your MC-101,
use the data wheel to display 'LOAD' - depress the data wheel,
scroll through the project files to locate and load a machine.

These early Boss DR beat boxes had very few sounds onboard,
so I've added some phrases from the Texas Instruments vintage 'Speak & Spell' machine. (Just to fill the slots up on the MC-101)

Death By Audio 'Ghost Delay' & Boss DR-55 'Dr Rhythm' by DreamsOfWires

Published on May 14, 2014 DreamsOfWires·27 videos

"Death By Audio's Ghost Delay pedal - I was just experimenting to see how the sound would affect the DR-55, so no 'music', just messing about. I shortened the original video, but I saved the section at the end where I cut the volume of the DR-55 and forced the pedal into self-oscillation.

The video was recorded in semi-darkness because I'm allergic to light bulbs and post-production. But... that's how I like it.

Camera used: Panasonic Lumix GH2 (hacked) with Olympus 45mm f1.8."

Roland SH-101 / RS-09 and Boss DR-55 Demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Apr 26, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"In this video the Roland SH-101 is doing a sequenced bassline (which was programmed via the SH-101's internal sequencer), the Boss DR-55 the drums (also sending a sync trigger to the SH-101 so it stays in time) and the RS-09 the strings/organ. I used a Boss DM-2w analog delay on the SH-101 rather briefly and on the RS-09 through-out the video. It was mixed on the Roland M-16E with minimal EQ and the master stereo signal was finally sent to my Roland SuperUA audio interface (jesus, I have a lot of Roland stuff all of a sudden)."

"Boss dr-55 analog drum machine. This thing is a poor mans 808. It has hi-hat, kick, snare and rim shot. This particular one is the more desirable edition that has an internal trim pot to adjust the kick drum decay. So you can make it as tight or long as you want."

Vintage Rare Drum Machine - Kay Memory Rhythm Machine (DRM-1) SN 04916

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It’s basically one of the takes on Boss DR-55, authentically made in Japan. as far as I’m aware - these were sold as diy kits back in 80s, but functionally are identical to Boss DR-55, sound is also the same/almost the same.

please, NOTE, it’s been modified to be powered from … eurorack offset voltage.

power now is on minijack socket. you just take an offset from eurorack system, and plug it in to power the drum machine, directly, using eurorack patch cable. it will take any voltage from approx. 5v up to 12v.

it also has analogue clock output, and cymbal trigger output, so will sync with everything perfectly.

currently it won’t accept any other power sources, but it’s a very mod friendly machine! as mentioned above, they were sold as diy kits at some point, so they beg you for modifications. I believe it even can be modified to fit into eurorack housing, and it shouldn’t be hard."
