NAMM: Buchla Acquired by Former Industry Veterans?

via DedMousie aka Les Mizzell on Muffs:

"... some industry veterans (including Michael Marans, former Keyboard tech editor) have acquired Buchla & Associates, with Don Buchla now acting as Chief Technology Officer for a new company, Buchla Electronic Musical Instruments. They have some really exciting plans for new products that Don's wanted to do for a long time, and now has the resources to do so."

I checked with a source and this one just might be true. No formal announcement on the Buchla site. Note this is speculation until confirmation.

This one in via Soviet Space Child.

Update 1/20/12: and we have confirmation from Synthopia (note the new keyboard controller):

"At the 2012 NAMM Show, several interesting announcements were made about electronic music legend Don Buchla, above, and the future of his electronic music instruments:

His company, Buchla & Associates, has been acquired by a group of investors, who are creating a new company Buchla Electronic Musical Instruments. Buchla wil be the Chief Technology Officer of the new company. The organizational change will bring design, manufacturing, sales and marketing resources to Buchla. The intent is that, by freeing Buchla from some of these areas, he’ll be able to spend more time to ‘introduce more innovations in music technology’, expand the Buchla product line into new areas and make his instruments available to a wider range of musicians.

Buchla also introduced a new modular synthesizer, the Buchla Skylab. The Buchla Skylab is a compact and slightly more affordable configuration of the Buchla 200e modular line.

Finally, Buchla announced that, after 50 years of not making a keyboard for his synthesizer [Buchlas aren't known for piano style keyboards, but he did have polyphonic keyboards with velocity and aftertouch in 1971 - 237/238 in 1971, touche in 1979 and the 406 in 1983 - see the Buchla 406 here.], that there will finally be a Buchla Keyboard controller. The Buchla Keyboard is currently in early stages, but don’t plan on it being a standard control keyboard. Buchla Electronic Musical Instruments expects to release a keyboard design that is as different from other keyboard controllers as its modular synthesizer is from other modulars."

Update 1/26/2012 via Ross Healy of Vicmod:

"The 3 owners are Aussies all working in the music equipment business and huge synth lovers. Lewis Chiodo, John Fuller, Danny Olesh are the new owners of Buchhla Electronic Instruments. Michael Marans is CEO in the US. Their intention with Buchla Electronic Instruments is to keep the brand as cool as it has been in the past allowing Don to do what he excels at ( creating/ designing). I have no doubt this will be a brilliant future for our beloved Buchla and Don/ Ezra etc. I have known Lewis for 12 years and believe me this guys LOVES synths/ playing synths since he was age 5."

Buchla 200e Sample by Ezra Buchla

Title link takes you to samples sent to the Buchla 200e group by Ezra Buchla, Don Buchla's son. I found it best to download everything to a folder and then play the samples as one entire, piece in order.

"there are all kinds of modules in there. i recorded a few seconds or minutes
of every system i checked out. it's pure 200e, pretty random patches, no
specific intentions...

one of the weirder sounds in there is a 227 mounted backwards and played
with fingers and a flashlight. try it if you dare but don't let the op-amps
get too hot...

yasi and i also recorded a couple of 'spine sessions' where we filled a
whole cabinet with one kind of module. we did one with 18 259's and one with
18 self-oscillating 291's. there's some of that in there, but sometime i'll
get around to editing a more focused thing i think.

both oscillators can produce lots of harsh staz without even using any
patchords; set the mod osc to modulate pitch in pitch tracking mode for
builtin fm feedback... cv feedback introduces some additional interesting
noise from the cv sampling rate interactions; use 2 coupled oscs in low
frequency mode and a 291 to make weird stumbling chaos glitch beats.

the phasor can do some pretty intense self-modulating stuff as well. use the
210+281+292+297 to make no-input tabla freakout."

Buchla Phases out 259e & 249e?

Via the Buchla list.

Bryan notes:
"Looks like the 249e might be gone as well. Both modules have been removed from the systems on the price list. I bet there aren't as many orders for them now that the 261e and 250e came out. I haven't got my hands on either of the DARFs yet to prefer one over the other but I do like the 259e just as much as the 261e. Maybe more..."

Two prior posts specifically mentioning the 259e Oscillator (I didn't find any I put up for the 249e):
Buchla Breaking the Mold
Buchla 200e Analog vs. Digital

Update via Ezra Buchla:
"- something very much like the probability fields in the 249 can be
programmed with the 250 and the lower section of the 266. try it!

- keep up the feedback. it is not impossible to make more of these,
especially the 259. i love that module, because i love crazy extreme digital
sounds. these very same sounds have been bad-mouthed a lot in the press, so
if you enjoy them, let us know.

- the 249 is a beast to assemble, and we've had few enough orders that it's
hard to justify continuing firmware support for it (a lot of work would be
needed to really root out all the bugs.)"

Another update from Ezra:
"hi everyone, a couple things:

- we're not taking orders for either of these modules right now (and here
are good reasons). we will fill orders on the waitlist. i can't say if we
will make more of them ever.

- if you were considering ordering a 249, i would not dismiss the 250. it
lacks some functions but adds other important ones: 32x stationary knob
bank, 16x sample and hold, new voltage integration uses... if you miss the
259's probability fields, it is possible to program the same behaviors with
a 250 and 266 combo."

Todd Barton's Buchla Release "ausprobieren" Now Available

"This is a brief album of brief pieces. In literature I am drawn to short forms, especially those of Jorges Luis Borges and Italo Calvino. In poetry: haiku.

Here are thirteen short analog synthesizer explorations created over a three week period of experimenting with a small Buchla 200e Electric Music Box.

For those interested in the modules, here they are: 266e, 259e, 261e, 281e, 292e, 291e, 285e, 206e, 222e

All the vignettes are self-generating patches. All the etudes are layered, mixed and manipulated from various self-generating pieces using Logic Express and various echo, delay and reverb plug-ins, mainly SoundToys and 2C-Aether.
The Buchla 200e is an amazingly deep, complex, and sensitive instrument. These little experiments are only my personal glimpse into the Buchla universe.

To hear other uses and sonic revelations in the world of the Buchla 200e please search the internet for works by Richard Lainhart, Alessandro Cortini, Giorgio Sancristoforo, Charles Cohen, Don Hassler, Joe Pascarell, and of course Don and Ezra Buchla to name just a few.

Enjoy!

Buchla 259 and 261e

The following notes comparing the original Buchla 259 and the new 261e Complex Waveform Generators came in on the Buchla list via Ezra Buchla, Don Buchla's son. Note the reference to the 258 Dual Oscillator.

"the waveshaping circuits of the 261e and the old 259 are very very very close. they "sound the same." except that the old one is indeed hotter, and the driving sine wave is not quite as clean or as stable in pitch.

to me, the functional difference is in the mod osc section. there are tradeoffs. the 259 has nice smooth cv output and you can push it to very low frequencies with cv input. this is good. the 261e has an additional, quite radical waveshaping circuit on the mod osc itself, which allows you to crossfade between sine, square, narrow square and a kindof funky sinusoidal trapezoid. this is good too. listen to the phase locked mod osc audio output! that is not the same, at all.

phase lock behaves differently. there are more possible behaviors in the 261e, as the process can receive certain information from software-land. and these again can come out as very interestingly close spaced chaotic orbits.

experiment with frequency modulation + pitch tracking + phase lock for maximally intricate orbit-space!

we will not do a 259 clone anytime soon. oh well.

i do luv me a 258. now THAT's buildable. of course maybe not by me, just at the moment... i am busy!

The Mae Shei on Virb.com. Sent my way via Roberto.

Update: Interesting Buchla tie in via sir_dss in the comments:
"This is a great band from LA that Ezra Buchla founded with his friends. Ezra only makes appearances now and again with them and now is in the equally amazing Gowns.

http://www.myspace.com/gowns

It was crazy/awesome to see them with $10k worth of 100/200 system modules at a show at The Smell(local all ages punk venue) doing this totally modern hardcore with fucked up electronics in the mix.

I really geeked out when I first met Ezra and just wanted to talk about Lo Pass Gates...I was pretty annoying. If you meet Ezra don't bother him about his family business!

The Mae Shei are all great chaps! "

Buchla 207

via this auction

This one is being auctioned off by Ezra Buchla, Don Buchla's son.

"This is a Buchla model 207 mixer and preamplifier from the 200 series, made sometime in the early 1970's. It is quite rare and consists of all original components.

The mixer section includes 6 input channels, 4 of which have manual control over location, and two of which have voltage control of location. This section also includes a third, independently switchable mono output bus.

The pre-amplifier section has a single 1/4" input, three switchable gain/impedance settings and a potentiometer for finer gain control."

Erza Buchla - Monome Flickr Set

Title link takes you to the pressmonome flickr set. I put up a link to the set on April 18th. It looks like there was an update with new shots including this one on April 25. That's Erza Buchla, Don Buchla's son with the Buchla 200e and three monomes. Pretty cool. Thanks to Music Thing for putting this shot up.

Update: Link to Erza's MySpace page. Via Doktor Future in the comments. Make sure to check out the comments.

Update: Ezra dropped by in the comments. It's worth noting that none of the music on his MySpace page (as of the time of this post of course) is 200e. Remember, unless the comments on a given piece of music specifically call out the synth used, never assume what it is.
