SynthSpa Custom Red Roland Junior 106

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here's a Roland Red Junior 106 that we made this month. It's exactly like a Juno 106 but smaller and more compact. The outside is totally new and perfect. The inside has received the standard 'Full survival restoration' and is set to last a decade or more. Every circuit board was restored and all the standard issues of the 106 were addressed. Voice chips are excellent with the SynthSpa guarantee ! It also has a copy of the best of the best sounds installed for peak inspiration."

I believe the first Junior 106 was by Henrik Nydell. You can find previous Junior 106 posts including video here.

FYI, I created a new SynthSpa channel label for them moving forward.

Roland Polar Junior 106

via this auction

"Here's another Polar Junior 106!

Inside it has the "total restoration package" and the voice chips and work are guaranteed for 8 years.

On the outside , It is a completely new custom synth , in our favorite white polar color scheme.

This Junior 106 also has a copy of the "best of the best" sounds, organized via bank.

All junior 106 owners will receive a free upgrade in the coming months. It's a special "bass mode octave switch" that puts the junior down into the low octaves.

You can still access all notes thru midi, and patches in 16' with the sub oscillator are still VERY low when played on the junior's key bed.

This is a perfect gigging synth, as many are already using the junior to play live."

Custom Orange Roland Junior 106

via this auction

"Here's an Orange Roland Junior 106 we finished this month.

We've made some modification from previous versions of the junior.

The lowest note on this Junior is the lowest note on the juno 106. In speaking with many Junior 106 owners, they have told me it's easier to adjust to reach high notes, using 8' and 4' , than it is to adjust low. So! I redesigned the key matrix to start at traditional C2.

You can now move around the octaves quite nicely using 16' 8' and 4'."

Roland Juno 106 "Junior" with LFO Triggering

YouTube via rolandsh1000

"A short demo of driving a Juno-106 from it's Patch Shift jack with an LFO. This can rapidly shift the patch that's loaded and, if keys are held down, the envelopes are retriggered. It's an interesting effect.

First, this Juno is obviously a chop job - I got the idea to do this from Henrik Nydell's terrific webpage which generally details the process. He called it a Junior-106, so that's what I call mine. It was quite a bit of work, but I like the 106 better in this size. I have photos on Flickr showing the insides of the Junior. It's snug in there, but it all works.

Second, the idea for driving the Patch Shift with an LFO came from a blog posting by Kevin Lightner, synthtech extraordinaire, on the moogmusic forums. So all credit to him for this nifty trick."

You might remember the Junior 106 from these posts.

Custom Roland Junior 106 Juno 106 SynthSpa

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a super rare and hard to find customized Roland Juno 106 transformed into the Junior 106 by Allen at SynthSpa. While everything is the same as a Juno 106 from a sound and feature perspective, the form factor is smaller at 37 Keys and is really convenient for space saving and travel, although this has never moved from my home studio.

Really a unique piece and the build quality is excellent, also fairly difficult to get your hands on as they are limited in production. Everything functions without issue and is a pleasure to program.

Also to note, there is a transpose button on the left side of the synth that allows you to shift the keyboard and you can select a C note from each octave to bring the keys up or down and octave. Does not include power cord and will ship with semi-rigid gator case pictured, although I would recommend getting a custom hard case made for this synth as the case is not perfectly molded for this synth."

Roland Juno 106 (Junior 106) Yellow

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Junior 106 is an incredibly rare and hard to find custom modified Juno 106 done by SynthSpa. It was completely serviced and modified in 2016. It has all the functionality of a Juno 106 in a smaller form factor. It has purple LEDs, yellow display window, and a yellow illuminated pitch bender. And, it's YELLOW!! I also had SynthSpa put some wood cheeks on it (original matching yellow cheeks will be included too). Everything works perfectly."

Black Roland Juno 106 - Junior 106

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Just got this back from Synth Spa a few weeks ago. Mint condition and looks great in white on black.

Totally refurbished inside and out. All voice chip refurbished, re caped, clean pots and sliders even the chorus is quiet!!! I’ve had a few 106s in the past and this sounds better than any of them.

This was my old HS-60 chopped to 37 keys. The keys are nice and white and play as new!

There are only a dozen or so of these Juniors floating around, this is the newest and arguably the best 106 you can find, either as a 37 or full 61.

Has the Synth Spa 7 years warranty good thru 2025."

Best shot showing how the HS-60 lends itself REALLY well to the chop. Just cut from speaker to speaker, rearrange some of the internal circuit boards, and there you are."

Roland Juno (junior) 106 white

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for sale is a super rare and hard to find customized Roland Juno 106 customized and transformed into the Junior 106. This retains all of the features and sounds of the juno but in a smaller form factor and... white theme. Ic ant tell you enough what a visual pleasure it is to play this beast of a synth. Roland should have built these but instead this is a customized design released by the Synth Spa every once in a while. Everything works as new, no issues what so ever. There are a few imperfections that are due to builder ( some uneven spacing but not really noticeable) error but its so slight I only mentioned it because Im very anal about details even micro ones."

The Junior-106 gets Unison Detune

via Henrik:
"I have started modifications of both the assigner CPU firmware code and the voice board CPU firmware to try to add some or all of the features below. So far unison detune has been proved working. In my current software I have temporarily disabled portamento control and instead use the portamento pot to control detune spread amount. The patch to replace portamento with unison detune is just 43 bytes, amazing what you can acheive with full hardware control..."

See the following page details: http://nydell.se/projects/j106/chap10.html, also a new page on how to add eprom sockets to eprom-less versions of the Juno-106 (http://nydell.se/projects/j106/chap12.html)." Roland HS-60 Modifications

YouTube Uploaded by rolandsh1000 on Apr 5, 2011

"This very short video shows two of the modifications made to a Roland HS-60...well, 3 if you count the chop job!

The first is a 2-octave transpose switch, which allows you to transpose the shorter keyboard over the entire 61-key range of the original keyboard.

The second is a 1/4" jack that allows you to patch external signals through the famous Juno chorus. Sorry that the sound is slightly out of sync and doesn't really highlight the differences when the chorus is activated - trust me, it really changes the sound!

This video was made to accompany an ebay auction in April 2011"

Roland HS-60 on eBay

Update:

via this auction

pics of the inside below.

"Up for bid is a highly modified Roland HS-60. Ok, this certainly qualifies as rare: I know of only 6 units that have been chopped down this way and I’ve done two of them. You are unlikely to find another like this anytime soon.

Anyway, if you are looking at this, you probably know already that the HS-60 was the consumer version of the Juno-106, except that it had a built-in amplifier and speakers. Those have been removed from this keyboard in order to make the size more compact. So this is now effectively a Juno-106 a few useful modifications:

Most obviously, the unit has been chopped down to 3-octaves. This reduces the weight of the unit (HS-60’s are fairly heavy synths) and the footprint. To allow for access to the entire keyboard range, I added circuitry and a switch to let the user transpose the keyboard by 2 octaves.

There is now a ‘Chorus In’ jack on the back, wired to one of the original inputs. I think this is an improvement over the HS-60, since now you can run external signals through the famous Roland chorus, and have some amplitude control over that signal using the onboard output VCA.

All voice chips have been reconditioned. That is, the factory resin coating which causes these voice chips to fail has been removed. After resin removal, all voice chips were reinstalled using Millmax sockets. To verify operation, the unit was left on continuously for days and all voices worked perfectly.

The 2-prong power plug has been replaced with a more standard 3-prong IEC power cable, which is now the electronic equipment standard.

The original memory battery has been replaced with a CR2032 in a clip holder to make future battery replacements easy. The CR2032 actually has a greater capacity and the one there now (dated Jan2011) should last many many years.

The unit was calibrated per the factory service manual, so it’s now running within specifications."

Roland Junior-106 - Red, White, and Blue 37 Key Juno-106

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"A beautiful earlier version of an internal restoration and custom modification done by the legendary eBay seller known as The SynthSpa. A creamy white finish on the controller surface is accented by custom blue LEDs (they don't photograph well and are not as glaring bright as in the photo) and clear-varnished exotic hardwood ends. 37 full size keys with transposition available or full range used as a sound module with an external midi controller. All six voice chips have been restored and calibrated, original soldered in battery back-up has been replaced with a clip in type and the original two pronged power cord socket has been replaced by a modern three pronged version as well as all other neccessary restorations and replacements. The works and then some! There are some very minute cosmetic scuffs here and there but I assure you she looks and sounds just as analog fantastic as the legend has it."
