Korg 900PS Analog Synthesizer

"This is the rare Korg 900PS analog Preset Synthesizer. There seems to be some confusion about the naming (sometimes called PS900), especially since the face plate says "Synthesizer Korg Preset." The 900PS is quite a basic but very interesting monosynth. The 900PS definitely 'borrowed' some ideas from the Prosoloist. Instant selection of 29 different tone colors. From the sweet sound of a violin to the chugging of a steam locomotive. Sensitive soft-touch switches and plentiful controls provide a wide variety of effects including vibrato, repeat, even the harmonics you need for a Hammond organ tone.

The 900PS has 29 presets: Timpani, Electric Bass, Synthe Bass, Piano, Harpsichord, Shamisen, Banjo, Mandolin, Xylophone, Tuba, Bassoon, Horn, Cello, Trombone, Saxophone, Voice, Clarinet, Accordion, Trumpet, Funky Trumpet, Synthe Trumpet, Oboe, Violin, Recorder, White Noise, Scale Noise, Harmonics I, Harmonics II, Harmonics III."

"Made in Japan, from 1975-1977, the Korg 900PS is a rare model...."big brother" to the 700S. Having twin oscillators, 37 keys (with aftertouch via the keys, or by touching the metal rail on front), 29 presets, portamento, white noise & percussive or voices, plus "harmonics" using 4 octaves (like drawbars), and the famous "traveller" (like a filter)...all this adds up to a high-performance, hands-on synthesizer.
Running @ 220/240 Vac (fixed mains cord), weight is around 13 Kgs, dims being 85 x 40 x 15 cms. Everything works, except the on/off switch does not switch off, and there are two fader caps missing. Synth has been serviced, so all faders & switches are crackle-free, and is all safe & sound inside. The wooden end-blacks were tatty, so they have been repaired, then painted in black. Generally, the 900PS is now in a "very good" condition, better than normal for a 44-y-old instrument."

Click here for pdf scans of various synth brochures and articles. I tried to list all models below. Apologies for the long list but if you are searching for this stuff via your favorite search engine, this is the only way it'll come up, and finding that oddball rare scan can be absolute gold.

"Korg 900PS analog mono synth, it's quite a strange beast and is I believe the second model that was commercially available from Korg & released in 1975. Mono so only one note can be played at a time."

Korg Preset 900ps Synthesizer

"This is an early Korg Preset 900ps; it may be a beta model as it has no serial and the formatting looks different than most 900ps. It has Korg 700 fader caps, with a few missing. It sounds great but some sliders may crackle when moving. It is a very unique sounding instrument perfect for a tinkerer or collector!"

Note the Crumar Stratus and the yellow and black synth above it. I've posted that one before but I forget what it is. Anyone remember?

Update via Heath: "The one above the Stratus is a Korg 900PS" You can find some prior posts including video on the KORG 900PS here.

Korg 900PS Manual Added to the Korg Kornukopia Site

You can find it in the manuals, service documents & schematics and sounds section of korganalogue.net.

Update via Paul of punkdisco:
"If anyone wants to hear what one sounds like, listen to our All Available Space track. It's the main octave line that runs from start to finish. I once spent half a day with a butchered wire from my MS20's CV outs, randomly poking it into anything keyboard related on the 900PS. I was hoping to discover where I could add CV/Gate ins. From memory, I got the pitch working but not the gate (might have been the other way around). CV on a 900PS would be fab! Huge thanks for this Ben.."

"Korg 900ps Synth. Condition is "For parts or not working".

It’s been in the loft for a few years .. it needs a good service..it’s taking up room as I’m de cluttering.. so I’ll start it low.. the casing is ok for the age and the keys are responsive.. it mostly works as it should sustain..attack etc all ok.."

"The 37-key Korg 900PS, released in 1975, is a rare and interesting analog monophonic synthesizer with a variety of tone colors. The tones are tweaked via the multitude of controls on the front panel of the synth, providing a great tactile experience during performance. The 29 presets on this synth really cover a lot of sounds, including shamisen (!), clarinet, violin, white noise, synth bass, and more. Further controls for harmonics, attack/sustain VCA, portamento, and more allow for even more tonal customization. Don’t miss this rare synth in very good condition!"

The Korg 900PS Preset Monosynth

Via Benjamin Ward of Korganalog.net:

"The 900PS is a quite basic but interesting monosynth that came out around 1976. I took some photos the summer before last when I was thinking of flogging it (but I later changed my mind - I am a hoarder too which doesn't help!)

It does contain some nice early Korg quirkiness, such as the harmonics controls (I suppose Korg were going for the organ market with this one), go travelling with the Traveler (cut off frequency slider) and of course the metal modulation bar that runs the length of the keyboard and can be used to control vibrato, pitch bend, loudness, repeat effects and portamento (all at the same time if you wish!) As far as CV/gate is concerned I would have thought that its easy to mod but you would have to ask a boffin."

Korg 900PS preset monosynth

via this auction

"The synth has great analog sounds and a versatile feature set that provides control over many aspects of the preset tones. There are also three Harmonic switches that let you create sounds of your own using four harmonic slide controls in addition to the other panel controls.

Best of all, in addition to White Noise, the 900PS has Scale Noise, a feature I have not seen on any synth except the Korg 770. This is essentially “pitched” noise. Unlike White Noise, which sounds the same on all keys, Scale Noise follows keyboard pitch, so you can use it to play melodies. It sounds very eerie, and I think it’s one of the synth’s best features – and certainly its most unique."

1975 Korg 900PS Analog Synthesizer

"Super rare Korg analog synth - you'll be hard pressed to find another one of these in this condition, much less find one at all. Everything works except vibrato (maybe a quick fix? I've never opened it up). Also, like most synths from the era, needs a little time to warm up to stabilize. I just used this on a session with no issues. Really sounds amazing and there's nothing like it. Keep in mind is this 100v Japan voltage but it will come with a step converter transformer box (high quality) to convert to for use in the US. There is also avery unique chromium rod 'touch bar' that runs the length of the keyboard in front of the keys to control: Repeat, Forte, Pitch, Vibrato, Portamento. It works and it's awesome."
