Musikmesse: MFB MEGAZWERG and MICROZWERG

via mfberlin.de

"* semi-modular system with ten sections
* analogue VCO with analogue ring modulator
* 12dB/oct. multimode-filter
* built-in Digital Delay
* modulation-sequencer
* AHDSR-envelope with loop option
* MSRP: 480, - Euro

Although MEGAZWERG and its many useful functions are meant to serve as an expansion to MFB’s KRAFTZWERG or any analogue modular-system, MEGAZWERG also serves as an independent full-featured synthesizer. Its ten sections can be used individually or combined.

A brief overview to the sections of MEGAZWERG:

The oscillator offers triangle, saw tooth and rectangle waveform shapes. Its pitch can be set over an octave range using a trim-pot. Pitch is controlled by its CV-input using sequencers or keyboards. The output is prewired to the Y-input of the ring modulator, which is built analogue unlike the unit found in KRAFTZWERG. The ring modulator may also be used with two external signals.

The state-variable multimode-filter runs with 12dB slope per octave and offers Lo-, Hi- and Bandpass-modes as well as notch-filtering and resonance up to self-oscillation. Both, cutoff and resonance can be modulated using dedicated CV-inputs. In addition, a pitch-dependent cutoff-frequency control can be achieved using the key follow function. Key follow is prewired to key-CV respectively MIDI-pitch.

The envelope generator offers Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain and Release stages. Besides its normal mode, the first three stages can also be looped with an active gate-signal, and then followed by the release stage. This section also contains a VCA that serves as CV-controllable audio-output for MEGAZWERG. The envelope is prewired to the CV-input of the VCA.

The onboard 12-bit-Digital-Delay does not only create echo-effects. Its read-out-speed can be varied over a two-octave-range manually or by CV. In addition, there is a freeze function that sets the effect signal to last endlessly. Send and return jacks are provided to insert any module into the delay’s feedback-path, just like a filter or a ring modulator.

The modulation-sequencer serves to create simple, adjustable rhythmic modulations of two, three or four steps in length. Each step has a dedicated control to set the according control voltage. The sequence tempo can be adjusted with the sequence or follow the clock-input.

The dual Glide section offers two independent delay/lag units with different characteristics. You may use these to smooth the steps of the modulation-sequence or create portamento glides.

Two attenuators are available in the Dual-Attenuator-Section. In excess of limiting audio- and control-signals, these units can also serve as CV-sources. With the input not being patched, the output sends a fixed control voltage of up to 8V. This can be used to increase the maximum speed of KRAFTZWERG’s LFO or set the VCO-pulse width to a constant value.

The mixer section offers three inputs, where only inputs 1 and 2 are variable in gain.

Two multiples allow doubling or tripling CV- or audio-signals. Essential, where one LFO needs to modular two or three targets.

The signal-path VCO-VCF-VCA as well as envelope control over the VCA is internally prewired, so that MEGAZWERG can be played immediately. All further routings are created using the patch jacks. These can be used or controlled by MEGAZWERG itself or any compatible external device.

MFB’s MEGAZWERG has the following dimensions: 310 x 165 x 38/72 mm.

External power supply included."

"* semi-modular analogue synthesizer
* dual oscillator, dual multimode-filter
* separate inputs/outputs for both filters
* 18 patch connections in signal chain
* two LFOs with „One Shot“-function
* CV/Gate and MIDI control
* MSRP: 320,- Euro

MICROZWERG not only bridges the gap between NANOZWERG and KRAFTZWERG. Due to its dual multimode-filter, it also offers an individual signal-path with specific sound potential. MICROZWERG’s numerous patch connections are simply inviting to be modulated by our flexible step-sequencer URZWERG or to interact with the multifunctional MEGAZWERG.

Individually operated and due to its dual oscillators and dual multimode-filter, MICROZWERG offers a lot more than typical analogue basses and lead sounds. Prepare yourself for some special timbres. The signal path and modulations are quickly reconfigured using a few patch chords with the result of an enormous boost in sonic variety. Combined with other members of MFB’s ZWERG synthesizer family or even a modular system, MICROZWERG’s possibilities grow further.

A brief overview to the sections of MICROZWERG:

Both oscillators offer triangle, saw tooth and rectangle waveform shapes. Where oscillator 1 also offers a needle impulse, VCO 2 has a built-in noise generator. VCO 2 can be detuned by plus minus one octave in reference to VCO 1. Both oscillators can also be synced, using a patch connection. In addition, the separate output of VCO 2 can be used to modulate the filter. Finally, ring modulation is possible in combination with MEGAZWERG, where the ring modulated output can be fed back into MICROZWERG.

The two state-variable multimode-filters run with 12dB slope per octave and offer lo-, hi- and bandpass-modes as well as notch-filtering. The filters are prewired in series to increase the slope when used in same operation mode. Here, the slope is variable because both cutoff-controls can be shifted against each other using the slope control. Combining a lo- and hipass-filter result in a variable band pass with adjustable bandwidth and individually controllable resonances. When preferred, a parallel routing is possible using a patch connection, too. In this case, MICROZWERG allows two separate shifted bandpass-filters, notch-filtering with variable bandwidth or a combination of bandpass-filter with followed lo- or hipass-filter. Resonance can reach up to self-oscillation for both filters. The cutoff-frequencies are manually controlled simultaneously or by envelopes. They can be shifted against each other using the space-control. Modulations by LFO or CV can address either filter 1 or both filters.

A simple patch from Key CV to the contour- or mod-input can achieve pitch-dependent cutoff-frequency control. Because both filters offer independent in- and outputs, MICROZWERG is also destined to be used as an effective dual-filter for external sound sources.

The ADSR envelope is internally prewired to control the filters’ cutoff-frequency. MEGAZWERG or any modular system can jump in via patch chords whenever a second envelope is needed.

The two LFO offers four waveform shapes each and a one-shot-function, where the selected waveform is played only once after a gate-trigger, thus imitating a simple envelope that might be used for pitch or VCA control. LFO 2 includes a sample & hold.

Internal modulation wirings offer LFO control over the filters’ cutoff as well as the oscillators’ pitch or VCO 2’s pulse width. LFO 2’s speed can be modulated by an external control voltage, allowing increasing or decreasing the speed by a factor of 30. Using this feature, MICROZWERG is capable of extreme slow and fast modulations.

The control signals of the envelope and both LFOs are available as CV-outputs and can therefore be used to control other functions of MICROZWERG as well as in other analogue synthesizers and modular systems.

The signal-path VCO 1/2-VCF 1/2-VCA as well as the common main modulations is internally prewired, so that MICROZWERG can be played immediately. All further routings are created using the patch jacks. These can be used or controlled by MICROZWERG itself or any compatible external device.

MICROZWERG can be controlled by MIDI from any compatible keyboard or DAW. Note commands are received as well as pitch-wheel (+/- 2 semitones) and modulation-wheel data, the latter controlling the filter’s cutoff frequency.

MFB’s MICROZWERG has the following dimensions: 175 x 125 x 38/72 mm.

External power supply included."

"multimode filters its own distinctive sound structure. Moreover, the MICRO MINIATURE with its many patch points well equipped to be controlled by the flexible step sequencer URZWERG to be and interact with the multifunctional MEGAZWERG.

In single mode, the MICRO MINIATURE produce with its dual-oscillator and the dual multimode filters not only typical analog bass and lead sounds, but also for a monophonic synthesizer sounds unusual. With fast connections created a patch can be transformed and signal modulations in order to reproduce the sound potential of the MICRO DWARF.

In conjunction with the other synths of DWARF-family or a modular system to grow the capabilities of the MICRO MINIATURE further.

Here is an overview of the areas of the MICRO DWARF:

The two oscillators include the four waveforms triangle, sawtooth, square and spike. VCO 2 instead of the spike has a noise generator. VCO 2 can be tuned an octave plus minus compared to VCO 1. A patch compound, the oscillators sync with each other. In addition, the signal can be picked separately from VCO 2 are used to filter modulation. A ring modulation is combined with the MEGAZWERG possible from which the RM signal can be fed back into the MICRO DWARF.

The two 12-dB variable-state, multi-mode filters have the mode low pass, band pass and high pass and notch (band-stop). The filters are serially connected, resulting in the same mode, a larger edge steepness. This value is variable, as the two cutoff frequencies can be moved via the Space controls against each other. With the combination of low-and high-pass results in a bandpass filter with variable width and separately controllable resonance. A patch connection, a parallel connection of the filter is possible. Then two offset bandpasses, a notch filter with a variable width, or a low-or high-pass filter can be realized with projecting bandpass. The response can be controlled for both filters to self-oscillation. The cutoff frequencies are controlled or jointly controlled by envelope. You can also move through the Space controls against each other. The modulation via LFO or the Mod input either affects filter 1 or both filters together.

Key Follow for a pitch-dependent opening of the filter can be produced by a simple patch connecting the key to CV Contour Mod or input.

Since both filters have separate inputs and outputs, the MICRO MINIATURE be used as a versatile dual-filter box for external audio signals.

The ADSR envelope is internally connected to the cutoff frequency of the filter. If a second ADSR envelope required, it can be from MEGAZWERG or a modular system patched to the MICRO DWARF.

The LFOs have four waveforms and a one-shot function. The selected waveform goes through after the gate pulse of the incoming note only one cycle and thus can be considered a simple envelope, about the pitch or the VCA can be used. LFO 2 has also a sample & hold mode.

There are connections to the internal modulation LFO to cutoff frequency, and the pitch of the oscillators or pulse width of the second VCO The speed of LFO 2 can be modulated over a CV input. Even so, the frequency of LFO 2 increase by a factor of 30 and reduce, so hereby extremely fast or slow modulations are possible.

The control signals of the envelope and the LFO can also be output and therefore can control functions of other analog synthesizers and modular systems.

The signaling pathway VCOs-VCF1/VCF2-VCA and conventional modulations are pre-wired internally. The MICRO MINIATURE thus can be played directly. All other connections are made using the patch sockets and can be operated on MICRO MINIATURE itself and from external devices are controlled or used.

About the MIDI input can be driven to the MICRO DWARF with a Keyboard or a DAW. In addition to the note data, data from the pitch wheel (+ / - 2 semitones) processes and the modulation wheel to control the cutoff frequency.

The MICRO DWARF has the dimensions 190 x 150 mm x 50.

Power is supplied via the included AC adapter."

MFB Megazwerg sequenced with matrix sequencer bindubba 3

"This video is a response to a request.....

My apologies for taking so long to reply to your email.
I still like the Megazwerg and haven't any intention to sell it yet.
kind of because its very portable. There arent many patchable semimodular analog synths with midi & CV/gate for under $600 out there.
There is one on EBay right now for 371 British pounds = 588.03500 U.S. dollars.

Build quality for all this MFB stuff isnt too bad.
I wish they would use something other than a black plastic box to house it -
though they MFB also make individual eurorack style modules.
If you have a eurorack setup buy modules as you like - prob more expensive but
you get what you want.

The 4 step sequencer is great for modulating all sorts of things.
its my fav section .. along with the delay.
In the video I use it to mod the delay.

The filter, envelope, mixer, all standard ...nothing really special.
Though you can never have enough of these things.

The Drum sounds are from the Schlagzwerg.
There are better drum modules out there , but the portability of this thing makes it a keeper
for me ... along with the Kraftzwerg... They are reliable, inexpensive ...
I usually sequence these things with abelton on the road so to add extra punchier drums is easy.
(layering a VST drum machine over the Schlagzwerg isnt cheating .. is it??)
Anyway, I've got the 3 installed into an old DJ turntable road case (it was my old Technics 1200 roadcase.)

2 synths and a drum machine in a cheap roadcase.
Add this to all the VST plugins you like and you can sound like the Chemical Bros :-)

In the vid, the drums are sequenced the old fashioned way ... with gate signals fron the matrix sequencer (bindubba 3)on the left (You can use any sequencer really ... but the matrix sequencer is great for creating complicated patterns).
The Megazwerg is also sequenced with CV ... just random patterns using the same sequencer (NonlinearCircuits)

DOMINION X is MFB’s latest synthesizer. It combines analogue synthesis, programmability and modular patching. With advanced circuits, increased functionality and a new design, DOMINION X is the first of MFB’s next generation musical instruments.

DOMINION X offers three oscillators for maximum flexibility. Each waveform can be varied in symmetry. Besides altering the pulse width of a rectangle, you may also continuously turn a saw tooth into a triangle and a triangle into a sine. All oscillators also offer ring modulation. In addition, VCO 2 and VCO 3 can be synced to VCO1. Finally, VCO3 can modulate the frequency of VCO 1 and VCO 2. The analogue oscillator circuit is processor-controlled for stable tuning. To complete the available sound sources, noise or an external audio input can be added to the VCOs in DOMINION X’s mixer section.

The filter offers six operation modes. Available are three low pass variations with 12, 18 and 24 dB/oct. slopes. Also available are high pass-, band pass and a notch filter with slopes of 12 dB/oct. respectively 6 dB/oct. Variable filter modulations are possible via an invertible envelope, keyboard tracking, LFO, VCO, different MIDI controllers as well as by the use o the CV-input.

The two ADSR-type envelops are internally routed to the VCF- and VCA-sections. In addition, envelope 1 can also modulate the VCO section. LFOs 1 and 2 offer six waveform shapes including sample & hold. They may be switched to one-shot-modes to emulation simple envelopes. A third sine-LFO works in combination with a keyboard's modulation wheel and can dynamically address the VCO, VCF and VCA sections.

Modulations are assigned by the use of selector switches, located at the destinations. This allows easily setting and re-routing internal modulation paths – ideally for your live-performance.

To integrate external modulators, control- and audio sources, DOMINION X offers nine inputs. Therefore, oscillators, filter, VCA, CV/Gate and mixer can be easily combined with other analogue synthesizers such as MFB’s MEGAZWERG, analogue sequencers such as MFB’s URZWERG PRO or modular synthesizer systems.

An additional selector switch allows assignment of velocity for up to eleven modulation destinations.

DOMINION X offers 128 programmable patches for your personal sound creations. To support sound programming without an attached keyboard, different demo sequences are available. To use DOMINION X as a filter box for external audio sources, the VCA can be opened permanently. Finally, there is an insert available to integrate an effect or distortion unit into the signal path.

DOMINION X has the following dimensions: 330 x 170 x 60 mm. An external power supply is included."

Although the MEGA DWARF with its many useful functions as an extension for the KRAFTZWERG or analog modular systems was designed, it is also an independent synths with a full sound production. Its ten sections can be used either in combination or singly werden.Hier an overview of the sections of the MEGA DWARF: The oscillator has the waveforms triangle, sawtooth and square. He can vote with a Tune-trimmer than + / - one octave, and are played on the CV input via a sequencer or keyboard. The output is internally connected to the input of the ring modulator. The ring modulator, which is in contrast to KRAFTZWERG ring modulator analogous structure, may have also used separately for two external signals werden.Das 12 dB multimode filter, state-variable) on operating low-, band-and high-pass and notch (band stop. The response can be to regulate the oscillation. The cutoff frequency and resonance can be modulated via the CV inputs. Also can be done through Key follow a pitch-dependent opening of the filter, this function is internal with the Key CV or MIDI pitch verbunden.Die envelope has five phases: Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain and Release. In addition to the normal operating mode, the envelope can be looped over the first three phases, as long as a gate signal is. Thereafter, the envelope fades on release. In this section, is also housed a simple VCA, which acts as a CV-controllable audio output of the DWARF MEGA. The envelope signal is generated internally to the CV input of the VCA verbunden.Das 12-bit digital delay echo effect, not only simple but may change via a regulator or CV control the readout speed in an area of about two octaves. In addition, there is a freeze function, frozen with the effect signal can be endlessly reproduced. Send and return on another module, conceived as a filter or a ring modulator, ingrained in the Feedbackweg werden.de modulation sequencer is designed for simple, rhythmic modulations and can generate an adjustable pattern of two, three or four steps. Each step has determined its own regulator of the CV value. The pace can be set on the sequencer itself, or specified via the clock input werden.Die Dual Glide section offers two independent delay units with different characteristics. This can for example the steps of the modulation sequencer smoothed or portamento generated werden.Die two dual attenuator attenuator section not only allow a limited level of audio and control signals, but also act as a CV source. If the input is not patched, is an output control voltage output of up to 8 V. Thus for example can the maximum speed of the LFO KRAFTZWERG increased or the pulse width of the VCO at a specific value to constant change werden.de mixer has three inputs, which are regulated only inputs 1 and 2 can along the two multiples can be doubled CV and audio signals or triple. Useful if for example an LFO two or three goals simultaneously modulate signaling soll.Der VCO-VCF-VCA and the VCA HĂĽllkurvensteuerung are internally pre-wired, so that the MEGA DWARF can be played directly. All other used compounds are produced on the patch jacks, and can contain from MEGA DWARF itself and from external devices, or driven from werden.de MEGA DWARF has dimensions of 310 x 165 x 38/72 mm. The scope of supply includes the power adapter."
