Oberheim Stretch1984 OBERHEIM DX STRETCH

images via this auction

"OVERVIEW
The DX Programmable Digital Drum Machine from Oberheim fills the professional musician's need for an afford able. easy to use, state- of- the- art drum computer. Based upon the modular Oberheim DMX Drum Machine, the DX offers the sound and features of the DMX in a less expensive, more integrated package . The DX is not a drum synthesizer; it is a complex microcomputer system programmed with digital studio recordings of real drums. It doesn't sound like a rhythm box. it sounds like a drummer. Not only does the DX sound like a drummer, it can play like a real drum mer; with rolls, flams, odd time signatures, uneven phrases, changing tempos, or even off the beat. Up to 2200 notes can be stored in the DX, recorded in any of 100 Sequences of any length or time signature. Drum sequences can be recorded in real time or one note at a time. Any of the 18 individual drums (including crash cymbal) or individual notes can be recorded, erased, and then re-recorded until the drum beat is exactly right. The sequences can be combined to form up to 50 songs. Each song can contain up to 255 sequences, arranged in any order, to form a complete composition. Tempo and Time Signature are programmable for each sequence, and with the DX's extensive editing capability, a song's structure can be changed quickly and easily. The DX has several Quantize modes, which correct your rhythm to any beat between l/4 notes and 1/32 note triplets, or turn the Quantize off for the human feel. In addition, there is a Swing mode which will give rhythms the uneven feel that is used so often in jazz and other music.

There are individual tuning controls for each voice on the rear panel and each of the six DX voices has its own output. so you can record them on separate tracks. or EQ them separately. There is also a 7 input stereo mixer to allow you to mix all of the drums into the stereo and mono outputs. The DX can run in synchronization with the Oberheim DSX Digital Polyphonic Sequencer and the other components of the Oberheim Music System as well as other sequencers. There is a programmable external trigger, so you can control the DX with sequencers, synthesizers. or even a drum kit. A battery maintains power to the memory when the DX is turned off. so that you don t lose your sequences when you turn off power. A cassette interface is provided which enables quick changes of all of the sequences and permanent data storage. original list price $1395.00

Pro-One | Carpentry

Published on Jun 6, 2018 Alex Ball

Scans featured are via http://retrosynthads.blogspot.com/

"I've always loved 80s Sci-Fi soundtracks such as "Escape from New York" and 'The Terminator'. It's by no means a coincidence that they both share something in common; The Sequential Circuits Prophet 5. As the P5 is about as rare as a unicorn and as expensive as a decent car, I'll probably never get close to one. However, SCI's monophonic version of it, the Pro-One can still be found if you keep your eyes open. And sure enough, I managed to snag one.

So, here's an original track following the spirit of those great scores. Minimal and atmospheric, my take on a spot of Carpentry.

I've made a detailed walkthrough of the production and mixing of this track if that's of interest: [below]

Sounds used:

Sequential Circuits Pro-One (1981)
Korg MS20 (1978)
Oberheim DX (1982)
Squier Jagmaster (1998), Ibanez Tubescreamer TS808, Fender Blues Junior II (mic'd with an SM57)
Some Linn LM-1 samples (cow bell, snare and tom doubles, shaker)
Sequences and clocking via Arturia BeatStep Pro"

Vintage Oberheim DMX DX Stretch Sound Kit Chips

via this auction

Interesting they went with orange and yellow packaging rather than the classic Oberheim blue.

"very cool vintage sound chip kit for the oberheim dmx dx or dx stretch model drum machines from the early 80's / there are five plug in chips in the kit , el hat 3 / cowbell 64 / fat snare / timbale / and tambourine rimshot .

These have all been tested and work fine , these are the real deal not replicas!

For those of you who don't know the oberheim dx dmx or dx stretch look it up it was used by a lot of early 80's hip hop and synth pop band , like depeche mode and pet shop boys , even george michael had one, they were a lot like the linn drum made famous by prince"

Oberheim DX Drum Machine Vintage Extra E-Proms

via this auction
"The sound chips currently contained in this unit consist of the following:
1. Kick position: TR-808 Kick
2. Snare position: Original DX Snare
3. Hi-Hat position: Original DX Hi-hat
4. Toms position: DX Electric Snare (purchased through Electrongate)
5. Cymbals position: DX Handclaps (purchased through Electrongate) (Note: Three blank chips are inserted so that all three triggers for claps give a sound, each with a different clap “pitch.” This is what Electrongate told me I needed to do and it worked perfectly).
6. Perc. Position: Cowbell/Rimshot/Percussion hit

In addition to these chips, the following five extra chips are also included with this DX:
-DX IF0 CRASH
-CRASH DX IF1
-CRASH DX IF2
-CRASH DX IF3
-ELECTRIC GUITAR

This is a non-midi unit but a new midi add-on kit is now available for about $100 through a company called Electrongate. Two GREAT things about this drum machine are the individual output for EACH drum position (see back photo) and the external tuning pots for each drum (they are internal on the DMX if I am not mistaken). I used the individual outputs to great advantage, running each through a separate input on a multi channel effects process (also for sale in a separate auction). This way I could add reverb to the snare, compress the hi-hat, delay the percussion hits, etc., etc"

"Offered is this 1983 Oberheim Stretch DX (DMX) Programable drum machine with "Sync-to-tape" feature. I am the ORIGINAL from 1983. VERY nice condtition works great, sounds great and no reserve. Cosmetically there are a few very small scratches and an area about an inch long that had paint rubbed away from usage and I touched it up. This unit was not used very much and has been taken-out and cleaned and used once every July 4th and put back in storage since I owned it. Just to keep it in good working order. This awesome unit will ship with it's Original manual / Original Power Cord / E-Proms with the ORIGINAL instruction sheets."

Oberheim DX Stretch Vintage Digital Drum Machine

via this auction

"The DX Stretch features the standard DX drum machine with an additional four drum sounds added by the Stretch section... All functions of the DX section work great but 2 of the pads of the Stretch section aren't working. This doesn't mean the entire voice is out.....just one tuning of a sound and one volume level pad of another is out. Other than that everything else about this vintage drum machine works great!!! It features MIDI and has individual outputs and tuning pots on the rear panel for each sound. It's in absolutely fantastic cosmetic condition as can be seen in the close-up photos. If you want to program beats like early hip-hop and classic 80s pop then this is what you're looking for. Due to the age of this item (over 25 years) I can provide no warranty or guarantee that it will work forever. It hasn't given me any problems besides the ones stated previously. Also includes power cable, DX manual, Stretch manual and installation instructions in case you wish to remove the Stretch portion. The EEPROMS included are DX Kick, DMX Snare 6, DX Hat, DX Tom, Shaker 2 + Clap, Crash (cymbal socket only), Long Ride (cymbal socket only), Electric Tom 3, Fat Electronic Snare, Tambourine + Rim Shot, Tabla, Triangle, African Drum, Click (cymbal socket only), Long Noise (cymbal socket only), and Electronic Snare. That's a lot of sounds and there are companies out there on the web that will burn new EEPROMS with just about any percussion sound you want to use in the DX Stretch."

Oberheim DX with Electrongate MIDI Upgrade

via this auction
"Details on the midi:
'This upgrade adds MIDI input and output capability and additional clocking options to your DX. When installed, your DX will send and receive MIDI note-on/note-off messages, system exclusive sequence dump messages and MIDI clock, song select, start and stop messages. MIDI input and output jacks are added to the right side panel of the DX and a circuit board is installed inside. (The MIDI upgrade can be mounted on top of the sync-to-tape circuit board, if your machine has that option). This interface will make your DX functionally equivalent to the Oberheim DXa'

The DX has 18 sounds, all tuneable, and separate outs for each voice. Can be heard all over classic 80s hip hop and early New Order records."

How to program the Oberheim DX, DXa or DMX Drum Machine

video by T O N E L A B

"Skip spiel @4:03

Now this was a lot of fun taking the old legend from '82 for a spin. Apart from the 808, the DX would have to be one of the most 'fun to program' drum machines around... it's not (just) the vintage 12-bit sounds.. but the workflow and basic, yet 'more-ish' interface... daunting if you're not familiar with it, but once familiar.. it's like riding a bike down a hill. Being able to swap out sound by lifting up the hood, is like a hotting up a car.. 'boffin-style!'

Star Trek VI Used an Oberheim DX or DMX Drum Machine as Control Prop

Check this out. The sliders and buttons match up perfectly, including the red and white. Star Trek VI came out in 1991. The DX came out in 1982. Be sure to also check out the Synths in TV and Film posted back in 2007.

via swissdoc, via @esuenuesu

"Star Trek VI at 1:38:32: The Enterprise navigation system is based on a vintage Oberheim DX Drum Machine.🥁"

And two more below from Amazona.de.

Update via electrongate in the comments: "The prop seems to have seven columns of three buttons. Too many for a DX, not enough for a DMX. Possibly a cut-down DMX."

Oberheim DX : Sneaky Rom Mod DX,909,Lindrum, Sequential DrumTracks

Published on Jun 25, 2018 100 Things I Do

"As you might of seen in a previous video [here] I picked up a Oberheim DX Drum machine recently. Partially because I love what it does to beats as you create them, mostly because I had this ROM mod brewing in my mind and I was pretty sure I could get it to work without a lot of work!

The mod allows you to switch between Lower and high addresses of EPROM memory on the fly, You just place the sounds you want at the memory location (in 8bit DX encoding) and there you go. A custom sound set of your very own making!

This is still in prototype phase but I am intending to make some professional PCB's to make it all a little more stable and professional."

Oberheim DX (DXa) 80's style beat!

Published on Jun 9, 2018 100 Things I Do

"This week some fun with the Oberheim DX. It's known as the DXa version, a few tweaks and factory MIDI! The Eventide H3000 also helps in the clip to liven up the sound!

I've always had my eye on either a Oberheim DMX or DX drum machine. They seem to be going for crazy prices at the moment, but I managed to find one in decent condition but was 110v (Its 240v in Australia) and a quite a few buttons were not working well.

So I spent this week cleaning it up and fixing the issues (also changed the voltage to 240 with a bit of soldering work), as the more eager eyed viewer might notice I also made some nice Tasmanian Oak end cheeks to lift the looks just a little (original ones are plastic!).

It was fun just seeing what the E3000 would do with the basic sounds!"

Oberheim DX Drum Machine - Free Sample Pack

Published on Sep 17, 2018 Alex Ball

Enjoy!
