Doepfer SCHALTWERK pattern sequencer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"SCHALTWERK is the most sophisticated trigger sequencer ever released to the market. For years it has been extremely hard to find as it has been proven to withstand the teeth of time and is in use regularly in high profile electronic music studios cross the globe. The feature set, blinken lights and the sheer size of this unit make them mere mortals moan in awe!

It can function as the center master sequencer of your setup or follow as a slave. One can simultaneously connect an impressive amount of different musical devices to it and have them all run along in rock solid timing! BOTH MIDI AND CV SIMULTANEOUSLY! It is as super inspirational as it is functional to constantly have every step of every track in front of you. Hundreds of blinkenlights look cool but also let you know exactly what is happening on the sequence.

Advanced programming methods make the it a breeze to input notes and compose tracks. built in effects also bring kick ass live performance tools at your disposal. Also you are able to make drastic changes to your set by simply changing the pattern as every patter hold dedicated pattern data and and midi channels, effects and much much more. Much like changing scenes in Ableton but waaaaayyyyy cooler!

This particular unit is in MINT condition, never gigged and has only spent time in a smoke free studio. The surface is cosmetically in fantastic condition and features only very mild rack rash. The panel graphics and lettering are in also in immaculate condition. All contacts work exactly as they should.

Doepfer Schaltwerk Sequencer and Vermona DRM Mk II

via Andrew of Vedic Space Program
"The Doepfer Schaltwerk is an amazing sequencer, because it can run eight different MIDI track sequences simultaneously with 3 cv outs per track (1 pitch, 1 velocity and 1 gate) for a total of 24 cv outs. Each of the eight tracks has sixteen steps that can be turned on or off by pushing the LED buttons which turn red when set to trigger. There were 317 of the now discontinued Schaltwerks made according to an e-mail from Dieter Doepfer. I use it for sequencing drum patterns to the Vermona DRM Mk II. MIDI track 1 triggers the bass drum, MIDI track 2 triggers the snare and MIDI tracks 3 and 4 trigger the high hats. I like a very basic drum sound, but you could have a track to trigger all eight of the DRM's drum channels. Because of the push button LED grid, it is easy to change patterns while playing a sequence. The patterns can be save into 4 banks of 32 patterns each. The patterns can be saved as songs or linked as a set of 2 or 4 patterns. I also use it to do chords patterns for my Vermona Performer. The Schaltwerks are rare and I haven't seen any reviews or videos of it in operation so I thought that Matrixsynth readers would enjoy seeing a picture and a description. I need to borrow a video camera and post a Schaltwerk video. Apparently "schaltwerk" translates as "switching device" in English."

New Doepfer A-157 Trigger Sequencer Subsystem - Mini Schaltwerk

via Doepfer:
Note the pic is 157-1.
"A-157 is a trigger sequencer subsystem that is used to generate up to eight trigger signals controlled by a 8x16 LED/button matrix (some customers call it "Miniature Schaltwerk" as it is based on the same matrix as the no longer available Schaltwerk). The system is still in the prototype state. Consequently the specifications on this page are still preliminary !

The subsystem will probably contain several modules:

the LED/button matrix module A-157-1
the trigger output module A-157-2
one of the control modules (A-157-3, A-157-4 ...)
The LED/button matrix module A-157-1 is the core of the subsystem. It is used to set or reset the trigger event on each of the 16 steps of each of the 8 rows.
The trigger output module A-157-2 outputs the 8 trigger signals and has an LED display for each trigger. We will probably add a mute button or mute switch for each row that allows to turn the trigger output off/on independent for each row.
In the final version the modules A-157-1 and A-157-2 will be probably merged into one module only because both modules are essential for the subsystem.

The module A-157-1/2 (or the merged module that will contain both units) can be connected to a simple control module or a more sophisticated control module which is planned for the future (similar to the A-155 and A-154 conceptual design where the A-155 includes a simple control unit that can be replaced by the A-154 which offers a lot of additional functions).

At the beginning a simple control module A-157-3 similar to the A-155 control unit will be available. It offers only the functions clock, start/stop and reset (both with manual controls and control inputs). For this standard control unit the tempo (clock) is the same for all 8 rows, the direction is forward and the length of each row is 16.

We also plan a more complex control module A-157-4 that allows additional functions like 128 memories for trigger sequences, different clock/start/stop/reset for 2 or 4 groups of rows (e.g. common for rows 1-4 and 5-8, or in pairs), independent first/last step for each row, independent direction (forward/backward/pendulum/random) for each row, one-shot mode, LC display and so on. But these ideas are very preliminary and we will have to find out which functions are essential.

There are also plans for a stand-alone version adapted to the design of Dark Energy and Dark Time with the same case dimensions and wooden side panels (provisional name "Dark Flow")

release date: ~ fall 2013 (only A-157-1 ... 3, so far there is no release date available for the planned module A-157-4 and the stand-alone unit Dark Flow !)
All features, specifications, prices and release date are still without any obligation !"

with an alternative display at the left side which will be not realized !"

"Used it to sequence drum modules and it was fun to be able to visualize your beats and easily edit multiple tracks at once on the fly. It's an eight track sequencer using midi and CV so you can control a variety of old and new gear simultaneously. Doepfer calls for a 9-12v/500ma adapter in the service notes and a robust 12v/500ma adapter will be included. The wooden rack that it's mounted to in the pictures is not included."

This is a very rare and legendary 8 track analogue style midi and CV/gate (5 volts) Sequencer. It is possible to edit every parameter during playback with instant effect. So you can sequence live, also save and load, without stopping playback. Classic techno acts like "Der dritte Raum" used this unit for live performances and recording. For fully features set see doepfer website where you still can download the manual.

I bought it back in 1997. This was one of the very first units ever produced, it was a beta version. It was upgraded later with the original Parts from doepfer that added a new rom and the cv/gate board wich was not included in the beta version. The unit is in fully working condition. There are a few signs of wear, this unit is 19 Years old."

"Super easy and fun Analog cv/gate and midi trigger/sequencer. This one has had very little use with only 1 owner and is in a 9.9 out of 10 condition. Just a tiny small scratch by the rackmount hole. A breeze to learn and a must for syncing old analog and midi cv/gate synths and drum machines in the studio or live performances. Never gigged, and always kept in my Non smoking A/C controlled private studio."
