OP-X PRO-II: 80ies Disco Funk!

Published on Mar 12, 2013
http://www.sonicprojects.ch/opxpro2/d...

"Demo of the D Train O'Jays bank for the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual analog Oberheim VSTi synth plugin. All sounds are coming from several instances of OP-X PRO-II except for drums and piano plus rhodes.

The featured songs are two famous Electro Disco Soul Funk hits from the early eighties which have that special mix of danceable soul and funk in them:

1. D Train - You're The One For Me (Remix version)

All sounds (chords, bass, sound effects, clavinet, organ) are coming from several instances of OP-X PRO-II except for drums which were done with steinberg groove agent. The only processing is a bit of low eq boost for the bass sound.

monotribe + train = monotrip "DENSHATRIBE" Music Video「電車トライブ」演奏ビデオ

YouTube Published on Jun 9, 2011 by jetdaisuke

"Title: DENSHATRIBE
DENSHA means electric train.
After all, an analog synthesizer suits the train.
Imagine any situation of the train.
And play the KORG monotribe synthesizer. I feel very good playing it. I'm calling it as "monotrip". monotribe + train = monotrip

曲名は「電車トライブ」です。アナログシンセはやっぱり電車に似合う!KORG monotribe 一台あれば色んな電車シチュエーションを想像しながら演奏できてしまいますね。最高にイイ気分です。

Aquifex - JD-Xi & MC-101 live cover - TD’s Love on a Real Train

video by SynthAddict

"Aquifex - JD-Xi & MC-101 live cover - TD’s Love on a Real Train (Risky Business)

80% JD-Xi, needed some assistance from MC-101 due to track/voice limits.
Not possible this time to do a ‘one synth/all parts’ video. :-)
I even missed a few parts since it’s actually very elaborate and nuanced.

One of my favorite tracks ever, and way before I knew who Tangerine Dream was. I eventually became a huge fan, collecting everything they did and following their movie scores.

I wanted to make this video after watching Suit and Tie Guy’s awesome ‘how to’ video on his modular called 'Love on a real train - analysis (synth nerds only!)' - go check it out. Thanks for the inspiration, Suit!

RIP Edgar Froese

See the stranger
Just a loner
Doesn't matter
What they say
What they play

See the stranger
Just a loner
Here and after
Is a place
Is a face
Doesn't matter what they say

There's no shadows
Easing their pain
All aboard now
Get on that train
There's no mercy
Theirs are not souls
They be media message controled

Get the last train home
I'll do my thing"

Vocoding with Lucille Ball - Machine Made Voices! (1939)

Published on Apr 13, 2014 British Pathé

A bit more talk box than vocoder, but you get the idea.

"Titles read: "MACHINE MADE VOICES!"

Hollywood, California, United States of America.

In a Hollywood CBS recording studio we see American film star actress Lucille Ball telling us she has just travelled cross-country by train. She holds two small amplifiers against her throat and mouths some words. The amplifiers transform the sound of a steam train coming from a record into 'steam train words' picked up by Lucille's larynx. I cannot make out all of them - the last are "Hello everybody".

Three technician men sit at a table wearing headphones and making notes. Lucille does another demonstration - this one seems to be 'cow words' - very difficult to decipher. I guess it was still in the early stages!

5Pulser Waveshaper by frijitz

"The most effective waveshapers are the radical ones that produce multiple peaks per input cycle. There have been a number of these designed over the years, of course, but most are fairly complicated circuits.

A while back I discovered that the LM3914 LED bar-graph display driver chip can run at very high frequencies -- crisp square pulses well above the audio range! Operation of this chip is quite simple. It is basically a stack of window comparators, which fire one at a time as the input signal increases. The total span of the comparators is set by an external voltage.

From this I figured out how to make an interesting waveshaper that puts out a variable pulse train. The waveshape control voltage changes the span of the comparators, so an input sawtooth leads to a train of pulses from a single square wave up to a train of five pulses in less than half a period as the control voltage is varied. (The more traditional wavefolders use a VCA on the input signal to vary the waveshape.) The circuit is quite simple for what it does -- a dual opamp for the input signal and CV conditioning, the LM3914 and an output opamp summer to combine the pulses."

KAT MIDI KITI PRO Drum Trigger Analog to Digital Box

via this auction

"Here's the original marketing language for the MIDI K.I.T.I. Pro

'The midiKITI Pro is the most powerful trigger to MIDI converter on the market. Designed for drummers who need professional features and reliability, the midiKITI Pro is the only serious unit available for acoustic drum triggering or pad triggering. The midiKITI Pro features nine external trigger inputs for pads or triggers. With four notes per trigger, you can layer, crossfade, or even alternate sounds at the touch of a button. Its "Auto Train" feature allows quick and easy setup of MIDI channel, note channel, dynamic range, and many other parameters. The midiKITI's new live pattern generator can add dimension to your solos, or can simply be used as an ncredible practice device at home. The midiKITI Pro has all of the high level triggering features needed by today's top professionals.

KEY FEATURES—AUTO TRAINING modes allow easy setup of:
1. MIDI CHANNEL and MIDI NOTE simply by pressing your drum machine button;
2. GAIN for trigger signal simply by hitting the drum or pad.
3. TRIGGER ENVELOPE and personal dynamic range simply with a soft and a hard hit;
4. INTERACTION Groupings simply by hitting the drum or pad.

Trigger Inputs respond to electronic triggers, acoustic triggers, and drum mics because of intelligent use of the Trigger Envelope from AUTO TRAIN. PEAK VIEW allows bar-graph viewing of trigger signal strength. All Trigger Inputs are totally independent, each with: 16 levels of GAIN, 64 steps of personal DYNAMIC RANGE, variable THRESHOLDS, MASK TIMES, and HEADROOMS. SCAN TIME selects MIDI processing time from 1.5 to 8 milliseconds. INTERACTION Suppression eliminates cross triggering from one trigger to another.

16 MIDI KITs have the following independent MIDI settings for all of the 9 triggers for each KIT:

MIDI CHANNEL (1-16)
MIDI NOTE (1-128)
MINIMUM VELOCITY (0- 120)
MAXIMUM VELOCITY (8-127)
VELOCITY CURVE (feel) (1-16)
GATE TIME (0 - 6.3 seconds, in .025 sec steps and
infinite)

Each Midi KIT can send out a PROGRAM CHANGE to select sounds on your sound source.
Data Dumping through MIDI to save settings on a data disk or a computer librarian.

ADDITIONAL PRO FEATURES

Each trigger input can play up to 4 notes in 16 different modes. Modes include Multiple (Simultaneous) Velocity cross-fade and Alternating.

New INTERACTION MATRIX allows pads that interact to be grouped automatically without affecting the other pads not involved. An additional jack for a Hi-Hat mode controlled by a footswitch. (Three sounds available) KIT advance and backup can now be performed by the trigger inputs.

Select an independent MIDI Channel to receive Program Changes on. MIDI IN merge to MIDI OUT is selectable from KITI front panel.

PHYSICAL Specs:

Weight: 3 lbs.
Size: 9-1/2"x7-1/2"x2-1/2"
Membrane key panel with: Select, Up, Down, Save, and Auto keys
8 red I.e.d.s for MIDI parameter control
9 red I.e.d.s for Triggering parameter control
9 green Le.d.s for Trigger Input monitoring
2 yellow I.e.d.s for 4 Auto Train modes
20 gauge sturdy steel enclosure

Pacific Fast Mail Sound Effects Unit

via this auction

"Pacific Fast Mail sound/throttle unit. Intended as a sound effects unit for an HO scale train layout and originally manufactured in the 70's I believe. Was featured recently on the Matrixsynth blog [see label below] because it is an analog sound gizmo of sorts. Will make fuzzy/warm noise based exhaust sounds and bell and whistle sounds. Unit does not have audio outputs. Instead it puts the audio signal into train rails via it's screw outputs and then into a train that is equipped with an amplifier and speaker unit. In other words you will need a Pacific Fast Mail sound module to hear the sounds (these are available on Ebay from time to time)."

Pacific Fast Mail PFM HO Sound System 1

via this auction

"Pacific Fast Mail Sound System I. This is a locomotive sound effect unit intended for HO scale model train layouts. This unit was featured recently on the Matrixsynth blog because it is actually an analog synth gizmo of sorts. There are no audio out ports on the back since the idea was to have the sound travel through the current in model train rails which would then be picked up by an amplifier/speaker located in a train engine. In other words, to hear the sounds you will need a Pacific Fast Mail amplifier unit or similar unit (not included) wired to the main unit. These have been known to pop up on Ebay. This auction also includes 2 Quadratape I units. These are essentially basic cassette tape players (eject and play functions only) intended for continuous play effect cassettes. Both units will plug into the Minisound I unit. All items are in very good condition and will power up. I did not get the chance to actually hear the unit since I did not wire it to a speaker, so I am selling these as-is (although I'm pretty sure it will work)."

Elhardt Synth Sounds Dissected

via Elhardt on AH. This is a follow up to the previous Elhardt posts.

"Since I am trying to reassemble my MOTM tracks of a train passing by to sync up to video of real trains, I might as well put up an MP3 where the separate tracks/sounds can be heard by themselves for those who are curious as to what makes up the final recording. It was all done on the MOTM modular synth plus about 5 different effects devices.

MOTM train dissected is here.

MOTM train with all sounds mixed together (has been posted before, but here for reference or new to those who haven't heard it).

Also, I was in the middle of a dialogue on another synth forum talking about the Alesis A6 when some people interrupted our conversation and also mailed to my inbox saying they didn't believe my A6 sounds (liquids and sitar) were synthesized, accused me of being a possible fraud, and they were going to spread the word that I fake synth demos unless I proved otherwise by posting the patches. I didn't have patches on my computer to send, nor did I really want to, so I recorded those sounds with me turning random knobs on the A6 to prove they're from the synth just to shut them up. I might as well get more use out of that mp3 before I pull it down in a few days since I've had some on this list make the same ridiculous accusations, so if you want to hear it, don't delay.

Here were the original demos they heard and questioned:
http://home.att.net/~synth6/MOTM_A6_Indian.mp3
http://home.att.net/~synth6/A6_Pouring_Water.mp3
http://home.att.net/~synth6/A6_Boiling_Liquid.mp3

Here is me turning knobs and showing they're synthesized. Note that the sitar sounds kind of out of tune as I had just turned on my A6:

"Here's my latest cover using iPhone 6 Plus Garageband. It's a cool song from Wire Train, Chamber of Hellos. It is one of the first songs I learned in high school, I thought it would be interesting to relive it... by doing it on an iPhone.

All instruments are native to the app. Mic used is a Blue Yeti and Apple EarPods.
