Yamaha TX816, eight DX7 synths in a rack

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The TX816 is the big boss of all FM synths. It is a rack with eight TF1 modules which are Yamaha DX7 synthesizers condensed down to a single circuit board. Designed for use with an external controller and patch editor, the TX816 allows you to easily play eight DX7s.

There are 3 levels of Yamaha TX816 expertise. Level 1: how to use the TX816, Level 2: which software claims to emulate it well, and Level 3 why none of them does, but can sound great layered to it. If you are reading this listing, I guess you made your way to Level 3 already, congratulations. It's nice to be between professionals.

Although one can use the TX816 like it's eight seperate DX7s, mixing and panning each module together to layer the sounds into one monsterous 128 voice and 48 operator DX powerhouse is where it truly shines. The TX816 has been used by Kitaro, Chick Corea, Michael Jackson, Europe, and Scritti Politti between others. In the early eighties the unit cost $5,000. Each module also features an indepednent audio out (XLR) and MIDI I/O for a total of eight audio outputs and MIDI I/O's. It also has one global MIDI in/out port with 8-part multitimbrality, but no common stereo or mix output.

The unit I'm selling works, I just played all 8 modules separately to verify. It has two minor issues: the last module flashes a low battery error though it still holds patches (I'm out of TX816 batteries) and the back of the enclosure has a small ding on the left. It doesn't show if the TX816 is mounted in a closed rack. So instead of the $1600 what some people listed their mint unit on eBay, you can have mine for $999 with the one memory error and case ding."

SEGA「SUPER HANG-ON」より「Winning Run」を「TX816」で作りました♪

Published on Jul 24, 2016 NozMusic

Yamaha TX816 FM Synthesizer Fully Loaded with 8 TF1 Midi Rack Modules SN 1512

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The TX816 is a monster of DX and FM digital synthesis. It is a unique system in that it is a rack unit that could take up to eight TF1 modules. A TF1 module is basically a DX7 condensed down to a single circuit board with almost no front panel controls. Definitely designed for use with external hardware and software controllers the TX816 allows you to easily carry around up to eight DX7s! Software such as MOTU Unisyn, Emagic SounDiver, or even another DX7 can be used to program the sounds in each module via MIDI.

Each TF1 module consists of a 16-voice, 6-operator digital FM synth engine. So a complete TX816 with all eight TF1 modules would offer up to 128 voices and 48 operators! Each TF1 also features an independent audio out (XLR) and MIDI I/O for a total of eight audio outputs and MIDI I/O's. It also has one global MIDI in/out port with 8-part multitimbrality, but no common stereo or mix output.

The TX816 was designed for demanding live use where portability, polyphony, and lots of outputs are a must! The TX816 is fully compatible with all other DX synthesizers including Native Instruments FM7 software-based plug-in. You can use the TX816 like it's eight separate DX7s or mix and pan each module together to layer your sounds into one monstrous DX powerhouse! It has been used by Kitaro, Chick Corea, Michael Jackson, Europe, and Scritti Politti.

In the early eighties these sold for anywhere between $2,000 to $5,000 depending on how many TF1 modules were installed (from two to eight typically)."

Yamaha TX816 DEMO (All 8 Modules In Unison - Part I)

video upload by Blake Foster

"Check out my music: https://cbfosterfunkhouser.bandcamp.com/

The Tx816 is slowly becoming one of my favorites in my collection. It's a rack of 8 Dx7s in a 4 u rack. While it's a pain to integrate into a studio because of the lack of a main output, one needs a dedicated mixer and a 8 channel XLR snake for it to function properly, also don't forget that each module has its own battery so buying a used one is most likely to have dead batteries. Once all that fun stuff is finished, the result is very rewarding! 8 DX7 modules playing in unison is something you'd have to hear in person. Each voice is slightly detuned and each patch uses all 8 TF1 modules. I also realized there are very few TX816 demos on youtube so I thought I'd make one for everyone to see. Some people complain there's a lot of noise with these but I honestly don't see it unless you crank the gain. I beam the sounds from my DX7ii onto the TX module, it's a lot easier plus you can edit from the DX. I highly recommend this synth if you can get a good deal on one. They used to cost 5k in 1984! Enjoy. Also there's a bit of reverb from the Strymon Big Sky, Most of the "reverb" is actually just me sustaining the notes."

Yamaha TX816 DEMO (All 8 Modules In Unison - Part II - E-Pianos & 80's Pads)

video upload by Blake Foster

"Here's a Part II video demonstrating some custom patches I made for the DX7/TX816...all modules playing in unison and detuned/panned on the mixer. This video demonstrates some E-pianos and pad sounds...No effects were used in this video. Controlling the synth with a Yamaha KX88 Midi keyboard."

Patch List
"OPENMINDED"- plucky/Evolving pad
"JUSTAPHASE"- electric piano with a slight phaser-esque effect
"SQUAREGLIDE"- Quirky square-lead sound
"ELEKTRICITY"- Lead/brassy sound
"TINE DELAY" - E-piano with reverse delay sound
"REFLECTIONS" - Brassy piano sound with reverse delay sound
"4VOICE" - Etherial pad sound
"OBIESIXPAD" - Lush, warbley pad sound
"BLESSEDRAINS" - soft brass sound (you know what it is)

Yamaha TX816 with MV-802 Mixer

via this auction

"This is a rare opportunity to purchase a mint condition TX816 and matching MV-802 mixer with custom cables.

Features:
* This is the full package, and it would be a shame to part it out, so all components go together.
* 8 TF-1 modules, all functional, all with battery voltages above 3V (3.3, 3.4, 3.2, 3.5, 3.5, 3.3, 3.4, 3.4).
* The MV-802 is really meant for the TX816. It usually sits right on top of the unit, and has 8 inputs. The 8 modules are usually panned proportionally from L to R, creating a wall of sound.
* 8 high-quality custom Mogami cables from Psyonic (almost $200 here alone). Qty. 4 at 17" length, and Qty. 4 at 20" length. This keeps the TX816 and MV-802 assembly very tight as the cables are just long enough and no longer."

Beetle PR-7 Programmer for the Yamaha TX7, TX216, and TX816

Beetle PR-7 Programmer for the Yamaha TX7, TX216, and TX816 FM synthesizers

Published on Jul 17, 2012 ymarcc·23 videos

"This is a pretty rare Beetle PR-7 hardware programmer for the Yamaha TX7, TX216, and TX816 FM synthesizers. I posted the video in connection with an eBay auction (it's now sold).

I'll keep this posted for folks since right now this video seems to be the only one on YouTube of a PR-7. Too bad I didn't have a compatible synth to use it with.

From the manufacturer:

'The PR-7 is a control panel designed exclusively to control the Yamaha TX7, TX216 - TX816 FM tone generator systems. Programming of patches is now possible with a mock-up of a DX7 front panel including a backlit LCD adjustable display and ROM/RAM cartridge port. Other features include a midi in to allow key data to be sent for audible feed back while working with sounds, cartridge load/save to any module and is rack mountable if desired.'"

Build an epic dreamy soundtrack with Yamaha TX816 and Roland Jupiter-8

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Yamaha TX816 FM module paired with a Roland Jupiter-8 in random arpeggio mode was a perfect match for my track "Dreams" as a title track for my new album, of the same name.
With 8 DX7 cards, the TX816 is a monster when it comes to stacking up FM sounds.

FM Monster Duel! Yamaha TX816 vs TX802

Espen Kraft

Follow-up to this post.

"The Yamaha TX816 from 1984, a monster DX7, in fact you get EIGHT DX7 in one box with a total polyphony of 128 voices.

Drawback - It's easy to waste voices and you can't edit anything without a real DX7 to control it. Or compatible software.

The Yamaha TX802 from 1987, a highly flexible and powerful FM workhorse. EIGHT 2 voice polyphonc DX7IIs inside. So less total voices than the 816, but you can arrange voices as you want and fully editable from the module itself.

Which one should you get? I show you the differences and how to use them both.

17:00 Answer to what mix was what from the last video - MIX A=802 MIX B=816"

80s Vintage Studio Tour 2021 Espen Kraft | I am the 80s!

video by Espen Kraft

"I wrongly refer to the Yamaha TX816 as TX116, that would only be true if you have ONE TF-1 module within the frame, this has all eight of them, thus a TX816.

If you're wondering why I have no acoustic treatment in this room, my answer is... I don't need it in here. I never mix loud, I have the one side roof at a steep angle and I have a semi-thick carpet on the floor. When I record my vocals I usually but have some thick fabric behind ME, not behind the mic. I did run a commercial studio once where I actually HAD acoustic treatment in both the studio itself and the control room. I can't say my OWN music sounded any better back then really and I do the same music now. ;-)"
