"MicroFreak receives new oscillator and more in 2.0 firmware update

On top of announcing KeyLab Essential 88 and KeyStep Pro at NAMM 2020, French audio pioneers Arturia have also revealed a surprise update to their incredibly popular MicroFreak digital synth.

The MicroFreak 2.0 update adds several exciting new features and functions, refines some existing ones, and fixes a few minor bugs.

New Features
New Noise oscillator: morph between particle noise, white noise, and a metallic noise that’s reminiscent of a synth cymbal. An exciting new voice that will open up powerful new drum and percussion possibilities in MicroFreak.

Chord Mode: by holding the Paraphony button and playing some notes, you program the chord, then replay the shape with a single key.

Scale quantization: In the Utility settings, you can activate scale quantization to your favorite scale. When activated, the “white notes” on the keyboard play whichever scale you have selected. No more wrong notes!

Sequencer streamlining: in 2.0 firmware update, you’re now able to easily copy Pattern A to Pattern B in an instant.

Matrix initialize: before 2.0 firmware update, if you wanted to clear the Matrix of all routings, you’d have to manually do it. Now you can just hold the Shift and perform a long press on the encoder, and it will clear!
64 New Presets: Loads of exciting sounds to explore using the new oscillator and features.

Improvements
MicroFreak now displays visual feedback even when Local Control is off.
The synth’s Local Control now also translates USB to MIDI Out.
The release of currently playing presets are now cleared when switching to a new one.
The Record LED now blinks on each beat, instead of on 16ths.

Thanks to MicroFreak’s digital mind, the team at Arturia will be able to offer more exciting updates and improvements like this over time, ensuring that MicroFreak is always fresh and relevant.

To update your synth, simply connect it to your computer, load up the Arturia MIDI Control Center, and hit the 'update' button for MicroFreak."

REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 - Control your hardware with Blocks

Published on Jun 8, 2016 Native Instruments

"The free Blocks 1.2 update delivers major improvements on integrating hardware into your REAKTOR setup for unprecedented synergy. Learn more: http://www.native-instruments.com/rea...

Connect Blocks to your hardware! The REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 update introduces new CV and MIDI connectivity. Calibrate pitch signals for accurate use with external hardware oscillators, use Blocks to convert any signal into gates and triggers, and send pitch, gate, and modulation signals from a Blocks patch to REAKTOR's MIDI out. This free update is free for all registered REAKTOR 6 users."

And the press release:

"Native Instruments Releases Free REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 Update

Berlin, June 8, 2016 – Native Instruments today released the free REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 update. Blocks 1.2 adds major improvements for integrating hardware into REAKTOR-based setups. The update adds three new utilities, as well as introducing a MASCHINE sequencer and a set of eight drum modules designed to recreate the sound of a legendary drum machine. Coinciding with the release is a new series of tutorials demonstrating Blocks integration. The Blocks 1.2 update is available for free via the NI Service Center.

REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 brings several new Blocks to Native Instruments’ rack-style modular framework. The Pitch CV Out Block sends pitch CV and Gate signals to external hardware. Convenient auto-calibration tunes oscillators and calibrates the pitch CV signal sent out of REAKTOR. Calibration can be saved per snapshot. The Gates and Triggers Block generate up to four gates and triggers from incoming signals, allowing users to ping filters, trigger function generators and envelopes, clock sequencers, and much more. The MIDI Out module converts pitch and gate information from any Blocks patch into MIDI signals for controlling external MIDI gear. The module also functions as a four-channel CV to MIDI CC converter. These new devices also expand REAKTOR’s existing OSC capability, allowing users to transform incoming OSC signals into MIDI or CV/gate signals to control their external hardware.

REAKTOR Blocks 1.2 also marks the release of nine new Blocks that add enhanced functionality to MASCHINE and dedicated drum voices to the REAKTOR Blocks framework. The MASCHINE Sequencer Block is an eight-channel trigger sequencer designed to control Blocks patches directly the MASCHINE MK2 controller. The sequencer also features a Euclidean pattern generator that automatically creates new polyrhythmic structures within a sequence. The MASCHINE Sequencer Block is available free in the NI User Library. Niji Drum Blocks are eight drum modules that recreate the sound of a legendary drum machine. Combining these voices with the MASCHINE sequencer allows users to create their own custom drum machines.

Released in conjunction with the Blocks 1.2 update, Owen Vallis of the online education platform Kadenze has created a series of tutorials demonstrating how to integrate a setup – including hardware – with the new Blocks included in the update.

The Blocks 1.2 update is available free via the NI Service Center.

Blokas Midihub 1.15 Update: Practical MIDI Workflow Enhancements

Press release follows:

Lithuanian music technology company Blokas has recently released a significant update for their standalone MIDI router and processor, the Midihub.

At the heart of Midihub lies the concept of "pipes", sort of MIDI effects. These pipes can be seamlessly utilized using Midihub’s dedicated software editor, which boasts a versatile drag-and-drop interface for input/output configurations.

Version 1.15 introduces a suite of pipe enhancements and new features aimed at refining the MIDI processing experience. This update focuses on practical improvements that expand the device's utility and ease of use for producers and live performers, with each new feature aimed at solving common MIDI challenges.

Key Features of the Midihub 1.15 Update

Enhanced MIDI Mapping Capabilities

In this update, users gain the capability to control pipe parameters using MIDI messages generated within the Midihub itself, eliminating the necessity for physical loopbacks. This opens up a realm of intriguing possibilities for internal modifiers and self-modulation techniques. Moreover, the update allows for more detailed and precise manual MIDI mapping, enhancing control and customization.

Revamped Clock Pipe

The clock pipe, essential for tempo management, has been improved to offer more flexibility in its placement within the signal chain. New features like mappable tap-tempo and tempo nudge buttons have been added to simplify syncing with external equipment.

Precision Modulation with 14-bit LFO

A 14-bit LFO mode has been introduced, allowing for finer MIDI modulation depth and control. The addition of a Sample & Hold waveform for LFOs enables more complex and textured sound design possibilities.

New Dispatcher and Arpeggiator Algorithms

The update brings 7 fresh algorithms to the Dispatcher and Arpeggiator pipes, including "Entirely Up Then Down" and "Entirely Down Then Up" patterns. These additions provide users with more creative options for note sequencing and pattern generation.

By valuing community feedback and prioritizing the practical aspects of music creation, with the 1.15 update, Blokas ensures the Midihub remains an integral part of the creative process, simplifying MIDI workflows and sparking new creative possibilities.

Waldorf Quantum OS 2.0

Published on Mar 27, 2020 WaldorfMusicChannel

"We are proud to announce the availability of the highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware for our flagship Quantum Synthesizer — a major, feature-packed update centred around a new Kernel oscillator type alongside an array of other additions and improvements in keeping with the innovative instrument’s apt appellation. The update is free and available from here: https://waldorfmusic.com/en/quantum"

Update: and the press release:

"A long phase of beta testing has finally come to an end. Many of you have eagerly awaited this release, and here it is. Waldorf proudly presents the new 2.0 firmware for the Waldorf Quantum synthesizer, featuring the new Kernel oscillator type and an array of further additions and improvements.

From now on, in addition to the four previously available synthesis algorithms Wavetable, Waveform, Particle and Resonator, the Kernel mode complements the set. This opens up new grounds of serious sonic exploration and increases the already staggering number of possible sounds by another level.

Kernel mode is engaged by pressing the Wavetable and Waveform button of one oscillator at the same time. In Kernel Mode, up to six so-called Kernel Operators can be combined within a single oscillator. Each of those Operators is an oscillator of its own, supporting basic waveforms, wavetables and noise. All of them can be combined and interlinked freely. Choose between classic Phase FM, true FM and wavetable position as modulations at audio rate between the kernels.

There is an innovative Template Mode featuring 14 factory templates to create classic FM sounds through to forward-looking inharmonic textures and abstract tones. Those templates feature five individual meaningful sound parameters each, and a further five macro parameters are available in the Quantum Synthesizer’s main Modulation Matrix. Furthermore, you can use the Full Edit mode in order to delve deeper into the sonic structure of the Kernel mode and edit the kernels freely as you like.

It is perfectly possible to view the Quantum Synthesizer’s Kernel synthesis abilities as an oscillator construction kit, allowing for traditional approaches like a six-operator FM synth, as well as providing an experimental space for future-facing synthesis techniques.

That's by far not all, though. The highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware for Waldorf Music’s flagship Quantum Synthesizer also adds an array of other additions and improvements in keeping with the innovative instrument’s apt appellation. Improvements have been made in the Wavetable, Particle and Resonator oscillator models and the Modulation Matrix. The Sequencer now has a Parameter-only mode. USB storage devices are now supported. Expanded AudioFile Editor functions are now available and allow for editing samples within Quantum. Samples will now automatically be imported and exported together with the patches. Plus, many further improvements and fixes have been made.

When Waldorf Music launched its flagship Quantum Synthesizer to widespread critical acclaim, it sonically signalled an exciting new chapter in its longstanding tradition of designing groundbreaking high-end synthesizers. Introducing its highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware with so many additions and improvements indicates that this exciting-sounding synthesizer story is far from finished. For now, there are already more than enough fanciful features available to keep both tweakers and deep divers seriously sonically satisfied for some time to come!

Owners of Quantum can download the new update for free from their myWaldorf account. Log in and go to My Hardware. On the right column, click on "Quantum Update" to get access to your new firmware. Right next to it, you'll find a sound set with over 250 new Quantum patches which is available for download for free.

Installation of the OS 2.0 is done using an SD card. Unzip your download and copy the "quantum.update.bin" file into the main directory of your SD card. Insert the card upside down into Quantum. Go to Global>System on your Quantum and press Update. Reboot may take a few minutes longer than with the previous firmware updates. Do not switch off Quantum while the update is running! After you have the 2.0 update installed, future updates can be loaded from a USB drive.

We wish you lots of fun with your new firmware. May the music help everyone to get through these tough times. Our support team is still availabe for you. You can contact us and find answers to frequent questions in our support portal: https://support.waldorfmusic.com

Stay safe these days.

Roland Introduces TR-8S v2.5/TR-6S v1.5 Firmware & TR-EDITOR Update

video upload by RolandChannel

"TR-8S v2.5 and TR-6S v1.5 update load your Rhythm Performer with a stack of exciting new features. In this video, Dustin Good demonstrates the ins and outs of the new firmware and TR-EDITOR software updates.

Both TRs add six FM-based drum models—kick, snare, tom, clap, percussion, and cymbal. These models include new editable FM parameters which can be controlled from both the TR hardware and TR-EDITOR software for creating intricate, evolving sounds.

Rhythm tracks get a dose of unpredictability with a fresh sequencer update that adds probability, sub step probability, and master probability. Probability can bring your drum programming to life by setting percentage values to individual steps that dictate the chance of that step playing. The higher the percentage, the more that note will be played.

Quickly assign new sounds to your pattern with random kit and random instrument. Create spontaneous sonic changes in patterns and then easily restore back to the original kit.

Then run sounds through four new MFX options—Tone Fattener, Vinyl Simulator, Pitch Shifter Delay, and Ha-Dou Reverb.

Plus, upgrade the TR-EDITOR software to version 1.5 for deeper control of the new FM, probability editing, and more.

Audio update of Milky Way, Squawk Dirty, Blck_Noir and Grand Terminal modules

Published on May 23, 2020 TheEndorphines

"Due to various requests, here is the simplest firmware update algorithm of series of modules Milky Way, Squawk Dirty, Blck_Noir and Grand Terminal.

1) Download the latest firmware from our website:
https://airways.endorphin.es

2) Select your audio output in OSX to be headphones. The ideal volume level is one bar below the maximum audio level.

3) Power on your system while holding TAP (MODE) button on the module you are updating. Bank LED will start blinking BLUE (GREEN), this means it is now waiting for an update file.
4) Plug a 3.5mm mono cable from your computer’s headphone output to IN1/AUX input on MW/SD,/GT/BN). Make sure the best out level trimmers are tuned all the way CCW. Plugging in a cable might cause a spike in the audio, so in case the LED starts blinking red just press the TAP/MODE button again.
5) Turn WiFi off to not disrupt the update procedure, play the latest firmware audio file. The module’s led will be continuously blinking fast (green or blue depending on the module), this means the update is running. If the led turns red during the update, it means something went wrong, restart the update process and try again, make sure the audio level is one bar below maximum and all the audio input level trimmers are turned fully CCW."

"Native Instruments releases iMASCHINE update – now also optimized for iPad

Berlin, May 22, 2014 – Native Instruments today released an update for iMASCHINE – the acclaimed beat sketchpad for iOS devices. The latest version of the app is optimized for iPad, adapting to its larger screen layout. The update also includes a generous set of new sounds, iTunes sampling, and more. Current owners of iMASCHINE receive the update free. New customers can get iMASCHINE for $4.99 / 4,49 € / £2.99 / ¥500 at the Apple App Store.

iMASCHINE allows users to create music sketches on-the-go with their iPad or iPhone. With an eclectic selection of drums, synths, one-shots, and a built-in audio recorder, it is designed for on-the-go beatmaking. The update features a new user interface and an optimized layout for iPhone 5, iPad and iPad mini. On the iPad, the modified interface allows two-handed operation: editing and performing functions are now on the same window as iMASCHINE’s 16 drum-pads, 2-octave keyboard and the audio-recorder, making its workflow even smoother. Aside from iMASCHINE’s standard library, the update also includes QUANTUM COLLECTION – a brand-new iMASCHINE Expansion featuring a choice selection of sounds from the recently released MASCHINE 2 Library. The new iTunes sampling allows users to capture parts from the music on their iOS device and edit the samples’ start and end points.

Writing and performing with iMASCHINE becomes easier, thanks to a number of helpful workflow enhancements. Intuitive XY performance controls are a new way to perform effects. A swipe redo/undo function is a welcome addition for an even faster workflow. Lastly, this iMASCHINE update adds a metronome on/off switch – a popular request from the iMASCHINE community. Anyone who already owns iMASCHINE gets this entire feature set, including QUANTUM COLLECTION, for free by updating the iMASCHINE app on their iOS device.

Current iMASCHINE owners get the update free by updating the iMASCHINE app on their iOS device. New customers can get iMASCHINE for $4.99 / 4,49 € / £2.99 / ¥500 at the Apple App Store."

A New World in Synthesis

YouTube via Pic2008Lex

Note the above video does not feature any synths. It is a concept video for a tablet UI. The hardware looks like the majority of artist renders for the upcoming Apple iPad/iSlate. If you haven't heard, tomorrow, Apple will announce their new tablet device. Rumor is it will essentially be an iTouch with a 10" screen, more power, memory and may have the ability to run multiple apps at the same time. [Update: it most likely will]

Why is this a new world in synthesis? In short this is a new hardware platform for synthesis. Yes it is an extension of the iTouch platform, but the obvious key difference and game changer in my opinion will be the size of the screen. For example, imagine controlling all of your synths running Numerology on the device in that video. Imagine interfacing with your modular with a UI optimized version of VOLTA or Expert Sleepers. Imagine running Way Out Ware's iSample, or how about an ARP2600 emulation with sliders. Imagine running Audio Damage's tattoo on one, etc. And don't forget the accelorometer. Processing power, additional memory, and potentially running multiple apps at once will only add to the advantage the slate will have over the iTouch.

Site Menu Updates

This is just a heads up. I added the Updates and Comments links to the site menu directly above the posts section (directly below Featured Listings). Be sure to check the Updates at least once a day. Often I'll post a video only to have a follow-up video show up a few minutes later. Rather than put up a new post, I'll update the original and add the Update label. All updates go out on MATRIXSYNTH Twitter and Facebook, so you can follow them there if you prefer. All updates are preceded with a red Update: in the post so you can find them easily.  On Twitter and Facebook the update is preceded with Update: as well.

As for the Comments link, it currently only shows comments from the Blogger system. Facebook unfortunately does not offer a comment aggregation page for all comments on the site. If this has changed and anyone knows how to make it happen, let me know.  Note that if a comment comes in that warrants an update to a post I will update the post and an update will go out per above.

Finally, to keep the menu items from wrapping on mobile devices, I removed the Auctions link and changed Post Guidelines to just Guidelines, which actually makes more sense as they apply not only to all MATRIXSYNTH sites, but the MATRIXSYNTH Lounge on Facebook as well. You can find the Auctions link at the bottom of any auction post so it shouldn't be hard to find.   You can also just search for "auction" or any other term for that matter in the top left Blogger search box, followed by either sorting by date, or clicking the channel label at the bottom of the first post.  Channel labels always sort by latest post on top.

Novation Introduces Scales Mode Firmware Update for the Launchpad Pro

Novation // Launchpad Pro - Scales Mode

"Introducing Scale Mode, now available in the latest firmware update for Launchpad Pro. Expanding upon the existing Note Mode, the new Scales Mode browser really opens up the ability to use Launchpad Pro as an expressive musical instrument whilst retaining it’s ability to offer intuitive control over Ableton Live and external hardware in Standalone mode. Here, Harry Coade takes us through some of the scales in this performance, utilising the Bass Station 2 to highlight scales mode and hardware control.

Novation // Launchpad Pro - Scales Mode Introduction

Published on Aug 11, 2016 NovationTV

Update: and the press release:

"Novation today launched an update to the Launchpad Pro grid controller, which brings immense playability to what is already a feature-packed Ableton Live controller. The new functionality — implemented with an easy and free firmware update — adds a Scale Mode to the ubiquitous controller, enabling any Ableton Live user to effortlessly play and record perfectly in-key basslines, melodies, chords and leads.

Until now, Note mode used a ‘chromatic fourths’ layout, which requires an element of expertise to learn the position of the notes in your preferred scale. With the new Scale function, simply press Launchpad Pro’s Shift and Note buttons, then choose from a roster of 32 keys and modes, from major and minor, through phrygian, whole tone, bebop minor, iwato, etc. Once selected, Launchpad Pro’s 64 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads will assign themselves contiguously to only the notes of the selected scale, removing all the rest.

Seven Overlap options enable the relative positioning of notes on each row to be offset, changing the chords generated by any given finger positioning. For fans of the original note format, chromatic fourths mode keeps the pads assigned to the chromatic series but highlights the notes of the selected scale, so you can see which notes are in key, but still play the notes in between if you want to.

Scale mode isn’t just for Ableton Live; you can use it to play virtual instruments in any other DAW, as well as your hardware synths. Launchpad Pro does not require connection to a computer; it can send MIDI via its 1/8th-inch output (and an included 5-pin Din adapter), so you can play external synths without a keyboard controller.

How to update your Launchpad Pro
To update your Launchpad Pro, just download the latest Firmware from the Support pages of the Novation website, connect your Launchpad Pro and run the installer. It’s really simple.
