Cowboy and the Vocoder by Redmartian

The track is now available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/redmartian9

"The song was recording using the MMM for bass and vocoder carrier. The lead is a jupiter-6 and the drums were done using a Sequential DrumTraks. The lead and vocoder (Roland SVC-350) parts were played manually along with the bass/drums which were sequenced using midi via Logic."

Some of you might remember Cowboy and the Vocoder from these previous posts.  The story behind this track has a somewhat intersting and quirky history.  Cowboy was VoiceEncoder's dog.  VoiceEncoder is known for his vocoder videos and demos that became somewhat of an obscure synth meme.  His demos actually came up in a recent conversation I had with someone.  VoiceEncoder would often feature his dog Cowboy in his videos.  Cowboy would just be lying on a bed somewhere while VoiceEncoder talked to him through a vocoder.  Sadly Cowboy passed away on Monday, March 23, 2009 (click through for a tribute post).

The second half of what makes this track special is that it is one of the first tracks predominantly featuring the Mattson Mini Modular (it might actually be the first) [Update: according to Redmartian, "it was the first 'song' on the MMM. I did a few musical demos and orchestrated lute pieces, but this was the first 'pop song'."] It was composed by Redmartian as a tribute to Cowboy.  The lyrics are a dedication to Cowboy and the videos he was featured in.  Below are two videos for the track.  The bottom video was taken at the 2009 PNW Synth Gathering and features the Performance Music Systems Syntar in place of the Jupiter-6 for leads.   The Syntar was the first fully contained keytar synthesizer created by George Mattson, the man behind Mattson Mini Modular.

"A song written for a dog who likes to listen to the sound the Roland SVC-350 vocoder. This song features the MMM as well as a Sequential Circuits Drum Traks and a Roland Jupiter-6. (I don't have a Poly-800 .. sorry cowboy).

Here are the lyrics:

Do you know Cowboy
and the SVC-350?
Do you know Cowboy
and the Roland Vocoder?

Hey there Cowboy
I see you there
Lazy gazing
Gazing lazy
Whos my sweet boy?
You know its you.
I like to vocode and you do too.

No Poly-800 to drive the SVC
So I use an MMM as my carrier wave
No Poly-800 but Cowboy doesn't mind.
We all know its the Roland SVC-350 vocoder time.

"A poorly done (since I'm NOT a keyboard player) demonstration of my Elektronika EM-26 Vocoder/Strings from Ukraine (although bought on eBay from the US, the ONLY time I've EVER seen it being sold/auction on eBay in the US and NOT Ukraine, Russian Federation or elsewhere).

First-up: Strings (with me just hitting the keys at random).
Second-up: VOCODER!!! Playing its vocoder sound for you."

RIP Cowboy

I just did my YouTube run and my heart sank when I found the following two videos. There are very few things that hit more than losing someone you love - person or pet. Pets have your back unconditionally, it's as if their sole purpose in life is to love you and let you know how much of a hero you are to them. My sincerest condolences go out to VoiceEncoder. We can tell that you treated him well, vocoder lectures and all. Cowboy was one lucky dog.

BearEssense: "The Big Hurt"

YouTube via VoiceEncoder

Roland SVC350 vocoder according to VoiceEncoder. Extended vocals come in at the five minute mark, but if you have the time, listen to this one through. Trippy piece. Curious what other synths they used.

And a cover by the androgynous Nessie and Her Beard. That Nessie can whistle.

Nessie & Her Beard - The Big Hurt (Miss Toni Fisher)

YouTube via NessieSanzerbeard

"A true classic, composed and produced in 1959 by Miss Fisher's husband Wayne Shanklin and released on his independent Signet Records. It was quite possibly the first pop song to feature electronic phasing effects and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has since been covered by a number of other fantastic performers, such as Del Shannon, Susan Rafey, Susan Farrar, Scott Walker, and BearEssense."

Star Trek Communicator

YouTube via VoiceEncoder.

Nothing too synth in this one, but it probably has some potential for circuit bending. This one is from the vocoder king VoiceEncoder. In case you missed it, and if you are a bit of a masochist, you can find his Oscars Coverage vocoded on his YouTube Channel. You'd think he'd go with something a little less ear piercing...

Midnight Star: "Little Kitties They Like What I Do"

YouTube via VoiceEncoder — April 01, 2010 — Midnight Star: "Little Kitties They Like What I Do" aka "Freak-A-Zoid"
No Parking on the Dance Floor
1983

Anyone know what vocoder was used? BTW, there's been horrible distortion in VoiceEncoder's videos lately. Not sure what's up with that. Posting this one as I'm curious what was used and of course, the kittens...

Update via Voice in the comments: "The vocoder used is the same as mine...the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder (you can see it in three videos I posted). As for the distortion it's me seeing how high-pitched I can make my vocoder sound. It would go higher if the pitch-bend on my Korg Poly-800 was working. Or it's that either or both my synth and vocoder need to be re-calibrated after more than twenty-five years without ever having a check-up. Yes I noticed after I record that it sounds out-of-tune. I have no idea if it's the Korg, the Roland, or both. Also my mic probably needs a checking also.

I need to read "How to Wreck a Nice Beach"!!!"

Pics of the inside below.

"This is the flagship vocoder from Synton, and is among the best vocoders of all time. It shares company with the EMS 5000 and the Sennheiser VSM-201 vocoder.

It's really rare, only 20 pieces was made.

The face of the unit is without blemish. The pots feel smooth and as new, no pins are missing and all LEDs work as new.
When I got it five years ago, a CA3080 in it nearly 'exploded'. I got in touch with the Synton factory in Netherlands they informed me that this is a type bug and suggested to replace all of them. I decided to do that, and with this I replaced the condensers as well. (In the link below you can see pictures about the repair)

A technician has gone over it thoroughly, and couldn't find a fault.I used it also and found everything in a perfect state.

I provide a video and other infos about the product on the special tumblr page which I made for this project: syntovox221.tumblr.com"
