MIDIbox SEQ V4 and BLM16x16+X Prototype

YouTube via ucapps — May 15, 2010 — "MBSEQ V4 remote controlled by my new Button/Duo-LED matrix prototype.

The frontpanel hasn't been created yet, and it's difficult to push the mini buttons without button caps. But playing with this toy is already a lot of fun! :)

The BLM firmware is running on a dedicated PIC based core module and communicates with MBSEQ via MIDI. The optimized protocol is fast enough to achieve high refresh rates between 350 fps (if only a single line is changed) and 20 fps (if all 512 LEDs are changed)."

Documenting the Making of a MIDIBox SID

YouTube via natemccoy
"I made a simple and quick video documenting the making of my MIDIBox SID.

The MIDIBox SID is a DIY synthesizer, based off of the MOS Technology SID sound chip, the 8-bit sound source of the commodore 64 computer.

Although the synthesizer i made is not 100% finished it is still operational and i thought since there isn't a lot of information on youtube about the MIDIBox SID makeup, this might help some people to understand the process a little bit better.

For more information on the MIDIBox SID please check these sites.

MIDIbox SID V2 Bassline Demo

YouTube via ucapps
"The making of a new bassline demo with MIDIbox SID V2. This major update can conrol up to 8 SID soundchips with four PIC microcontrollers, connected to a CAN network. There are 4 dedicated sound engines for Leads/Basslines/Drums and polyphonic multi sounds, which can run on any PIC core as desired.

In this demo, four 8580 SIDs are used (...but my own box is fully stuffed, it just wasn't required to use the remaining ones)
The first core plays drum sequences, the second core two independent bassline sequences.

The sequences are interactively selected from a MIDI keyboard, and sound parameters like CutOff/EnvMod/Decay are changed with faders/joystick/Control Surface.

The Audio Output of the SID which plays the lower octave bassline is feedbacked to the Audio Input for increased resonance and distortion.

You listen to pure and unique SID sound - and it is sequenced live! Only external EQs, compression and delay effects have been added.

For more infos regarding this (strictly) non-commercial Do-It-Yourself project, see http://www.uCApps.de"

MIDIbox SEQ V4 Teaser #2

YouTube via ucapps

"MIDIbox SEQ V4 has reached beta state, let's celebrate this with a new demo!

[0:00] The electronic harp is played by Sculpture (part of Logic Audio) - a Physical Modelling Synth which I really like!
[0:00] MBSEQV4 plays the 16-step sequence with a new "step progression" feature: on each 4 step interval, the step is triggered twice. In addition, a customized groove template is applied on the velocity to accent the notes based on the master measure. This results into a more complex sequence which varies on each beat, but still sounds nice and not too random!
[0:01] to understand the "step progression" feature watch the GP LEDs - they are stopping each 4th step
[0:11] an Echo Fx is added with 64T delay. Note value is increased by +3 and forced to scale
[0:17] an additional VST synth is added which gets use of the new "step progression" feature as well
[0:21] Echo Fx: temporary increased to 6 repeats with +3 Note Value and +150% delay on each echo - let's scrub the harp!
[0:31] adding drums
[0:41] adding more synth lines, again with "step progression" to vary the sequence
[1:04] adding a chord sequence played by MIDIbox SID V2 (a typical arpeggio patch is used)
[1:48] probably you haven't noticed it due to the bad video quality, but I switched to another pattern which plays the electronic harp at C-3 on each step - the groove template is still enabled (boring?)
[2:05] now something completely different: a LFO is applied on the harp sequence with sine waveform and an interval of 4 steps. Force-to-Scale is enabled
[2:07] the LFO also sends a CC to Sculpture to vary the timbre.
[2:13] adding Echo Fx (1 repeat, 64ppqn delay, +150% tick) to this "modulated sequence"
[2:19] changing LFO waveform to Triangle
[2:31] changing LFO waveform to Sawtooth
[2:36] changing Echo Fx to 6 repeats
[2:46] slowly changing LFO the period to 16 steps (enjoy the change-over effects!)
[2:52] slowly changing LFO reset to 16 steps (enjoy the change-over effects!)
[3:00] changing LFO waveform to Sine, play drums again
[3:14] changing LFO waveform to Triangle
[3:21] changing CC offset of LFO
[3:33] unmuting the other instruments
[3:56] switching back to original sequence (my favourite moment ;-)
[4:16] muting/unmuting the toms...
[4:30] slowly muting the tracks
[4:40] thanks for listening! :-)

This track is the result of a rainy saturday afternoon."

MIDIbox SID V2 Bassline Demo #5

YouTube via ucapps
"MP3 with better audo quality available at midibox.org

Bassline demo played on a MIDIbox SID V2 in a MB-6582 case made by Wilba.

0:03 first bassline starts to play
0:10 selecting different sequences, drums played from a sampler
0:17 "pumping" effect realized by sending the bassdrum to the sidechain of a compressor
0:25 checking the new O23 feature: bassline played unisono
0:33 changing the oscillator phase offset
0:47 detune
1:05 disabling the O23 functions
1:15 second bassline w/ external delay Fx starts to play
1:22 showing the V-meter function in bassline mode
1:47 activating oscillator synch, second oscillator played with constant pitch
2:23 activating ring modulator, played with different pitches
2:55 tweaking cutoff/VCA release/O23 pitch (distortions are SID internal)
5:38 second bassline with detuned oscillators "

MIDIbox SEQ V4 Teaser

YouTube via ucapps

"Demonstration of an early alpha version of the upcoming MIDIbox SEQ V4.
Stereo Version at Vimeo

Many planned features are not available yet. However, most functions of MBSEQ V3 have already been re-implemented in C for the new MBHP_CORE_STM32 module and for an accurate PC/Mac based emulation. I also started to add new functions which were too complex for the old PIC based core.

[0:00] new frontpanel designed by Wilba (but the firmware will also support the frontpanel of MBSEQ V2 and V3)
[0:02] a drum track can play up to 16 instruments
[0:10] patterns are stored on a SD card now, and can be loaded (and stored) w/o sequencer hickups
[0:18] zoomed step view (shows 64, 128, 256 steps on a single page)
[0:10] snare is triggered with the overworked (more flexible) roll function at 384ppqn resolution
[0:20] new pattern selection page with pattern labels and categories
[0:23] MIDIbox SID V2 in bassline mode
[0:30] Roll function used on the bassline
[0:38] a loopback track controls the transposer, it doesn't matter anymore at which position this track is located
[0:53] Piano controlled from a track in chord mode
[1:13] some randomly selected chords
[1:24] simple synth line
[1:45] now with MIDI echo in Force-to-Scale mode (synth is in mono mode, therefore only one sound will be played - it sounds like an arpeggio)
[2:14] a second MIDIbox SID bassline is played
[2:43] slowly muting the tracks
[3:00] thanks for listening! :-)

This track has been made in a 2 hours session on a sunday afternoon after the last blocking bugs have been fixed"

Sidbox, soundlab Jamout

YouTube via bluelantern320

"This was the last session i had with 4 Sidboxes, 1 Soundlab Plus, Korg EA-1, Novation Nova, and A&H mixer. Live messing around. The Sidboxes and SL plus was trying to be sold on ebay 2008"

Update via Psylux in the comments:
"YES IT IS , from YouTube (before it is erased).

MATRIX, please do the DIY community a solid and annotate that this loser shits on fair use and REPEATEDLY violates the terms that the IP owners have laid out.

If every greedy shit for brains did this, we'd have fewer resources in the DIY community.

I'm the author and copyright owner of MIDIbox SID. This design is licensed for personal use only. You never asked me for permission to sell MIDIboxes on EBay, and already earned thousands of dollars, although you have been informed by multiple people that this is illegal.
Knowing this, your lyrics are just too hilarious.

Wilba6582

You sell MIDIboxes on eBay against the expressed will of an entire non-profit DIY community. You suck at building them too. And you suck at using them. And you suck at singing"

MIDIBOX SID Datassette BassLine 8bit Synth - the LFO 1

YouTube via BSTGVN
"MIDIBOX SID Datassette BassLine 8bit Synth.
This is a prototype equipped with 2 MOS 8580 SID and 1 MidiBox CORE.

Case it's not closed as you can see, buttons are not screwed, connection's cables are temporary.

Melody it's incomplete because the channel R make some other notes that complete the sequence. I've mute it to hear the LFO effect on the channel L.

-- LFO test on channel L --
LFO:
- Positive Sine Wave.
- Depth Pulse Width 80.
- Depth Filter 100.
- Sync Off.
- One Shot On.

ENV:
- EnvMod 5.
This parameter it's very low so you can hear only accented note. The LFO curve increasing the Cutoff will 'show' the non accented note.

FIL:
- Cutoff 0.
- Resonance 240.

In this video you can see also:
- Select Button 5 as Play/Seq.
- Select Button 4 as my Menu Page.
- Rotary Encoder 1 as Cutoff.
- Rotary encoder 2 as Resonance.

Switching off and on the One Shot you can start the LFO curve just one time.

Switching on the Sync flag you can afflict the glided note with the LFO curve. Than switching off the Sync flag you can start just one LFO curve if One flag it's On.

This is an 'illegal' way to use this functions LFO Sync & One shot flags.

Sorry for the poor sound but this come out from the lcd monitors and is recored by a digital photocamera.

This work born from the genius of Thorsten Klose.
You can find more info at http://www.ucapps.de i'm ganchan there."
