Waldorf Sanctioned MicroQ Emulator Could be Coming - Access Virus TI Emulation on Hold

This one was sent in anonynmously.

See this post on the Motorola DSP56300 project for reference, as well as this post on the Access Virus.

The above reads:

"So yeah, we have some news regarding the state of the Waldorf microQ

We are in contact with Waldorf, I visited them some weeks ago and held a short presentation and presented a command line version of the microQ in action. And in principle, they are interested in our tech 👍

I asked today and they gave allowance to mention this to you so you are aware why it got a bit silent over here 🙂

It should be noted that we do not have any kind of written agreement yet, so all of this may not happen at all, but we're working on it. No further development has taken place since I visited them because this might become paid work Therefore, I have to ask for patience. If/when there will be a beta on this Discord is out of our hands and is part of the negotiation. Obviously, I mentioned this Discord server with 3000+ members and people willing to beta test. Also, the viral advantage that this Discord provides

Future updates on the status of the microQ emulation"

Update via the comments:

There is a playlist with the emulator playing the microQ demos online:

And an update on the Access Virus TI emulator (note holding off until the TI is out of production is commendable):

Virus TI technical info / statement
20. APRIL 2022 / DSP56300

We have updated our Technical Info page with some insights about how the multi-DSP setup on the Virus TI works. Also, it has a useful tip for hardware TI owners to maximize voice count in Multi Mode / Sequencer Mode, enjoy! 👍

As questions are imminent, a statement regarding Virus TI emulation:

Virus TI emulation development is done in a private fork of the public project. We do this with the goal to have the whole line of Virus synthesizers emulated, to improve the accuracy and feature set of the emulation in general, to learn about the internal architecture as a preparation for other future synthesizers and of course, because it is a lot of fun!

However, currently we do not have plans to release a version of the emulator that supports the Virus TI, TI2 or Snow as this generation of synthesizers is still being sold. We do not want to negatively impact current or future sales of Kemper GmbH or affiliates, it is exactly the opposite. We appreciate the achievements of Access Music / Kemper and created Virus B & C emulators as an appreciation and to preserve these great synthesizers in a digital form."

Update: The following is demo comparing the Virus C emulator with a Virus TI.

Access Virus TI VS DSP56300 Emulator (With Access Virus C ROM)
video upload by Eyezer Productionz Sound Design

"A VST beta is finally available for the DSP56300 emulator, which is an emulator that emulates the Motorola DSP chip(s) used in the Virus synths. You can load ROM files from the Virus B or C into this emulator (just Google Access Virus ROM and you should be able to find the ROM files), which then allows you to play the factory patches from the Virus B or C. The sound is pretty much 99.99% accurate.

I use the Virus TI to give you an idea of how accurate this emulator sounds. I would even say that the emulator sounds better on certain patches. Some patches are pretty much identical to the TI, while some sounds noticeably different. This is of course nothing new, many people claim that the Virus B and C sounds better (or different is perhaps a better term?) than the TI. I will have to do a more in-depth comparison sometime.

The Virus TI is connected via analog outs to my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 3rd Gen (front inputs).

The Access Virus Has Been Discontinued

According to Amazona.de, the Access Virus has been officially discontinued.

Google translated:

Many people have already suspected it: Access mastermind Christoph Kemper has confirmed to us that the Access Virus TI2 has no longer been produced for a few months. There were many clues, as the last Access Virus TI2 series was released in 2009. The Virus TI2 series included the Polar, Snow, Darkstar and Desktop models. Nothing new has been heard from Access Virus Synthesizer since then. The TI2 has been available for all these years and disappeared from shops in the last few months. Only power supplies and rackmounts can be found on the Access Virus website.

The move away from Access Virus could have something to do with the fact that Christoph Kemper discovered his love for amp propiling in 2011 and released the first Kemper Amp, which is still a complete success today. Despite this success, Access had a stand at Superbooth 2018 and we were able to ask Christoph Kemper about plans for new synthesizers.

Christoph Kemper confirmed that he is still interested in synthesizers, but is currently at full capacity with the Kemper amps. It became clear that his company did not have the capacity to develop Kemper amps and Access synthesizers at the same time. In the interview it was suggested that there might be an Access Virus TI3, but he didn't want to specify."

Access Virus TI Sounds - One of the Most Interesting Synthesizers

Access Virus TI Sounds - Part 1 - One of the Most Interesting Synthesizers video upload by Friendly Noise

"First introduced in 1997, the Access Virus and all his following variations are without doubt one of the most iconic and used synthesizers in the 21st century. The last versions of the Virus are full of details with a real musical function, like three oscillators, three LFOs, dual multimode filters (+ comb and formant modes), great modulation matrix and effect section, FM, ring modulation, wavetable, Hypersaw (kind of Rolandish-Supersaw)… to name a few features. With that power, the Virus can cover all the basics for different kinds of musical styles. A 16 part multimode and great polyphony can deliver all the sounds you need for whole songs… providing you like the characteristic sound of the Virus. Some love it, some hate it. Was the amazing polyphony achieved at the cost of the high end? The Virus is not the brightest synth in the town, but how much do you care about that?

The sounds are illustrated with pictures of my own Virus. There is no video, because those are old recordings, made long time ago before I started recording videos. The purpose of the recordings was exclusively for personal use, a way to remember sounds I liked. Some of the recordings can be useful today in order to get familiar with the sound of the featured instruments, so I decided to upload them. In fact, no video is an advantage: you can do other things while just listening to the sounds. :-)

DSP56300 Emulator to Bring Emulations of Classic Access, Clavia, Waldorf, and Novation Synths

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child who had the following to say:

"This is a pretty big deal for synthesizer preservation. These folks have been working on an emulator of the Motorola chip which was used in a lot of synths from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s. According to their discord, the early focus is to get single DSP synths up and running first, so the Virus, MicroQ, and Microwave XT. Multi DSP synths like the Q, SuperNova and Nord Leads coming in the future."

via https://dsp56300.wordpress.com:

"We are a group of people who are currently Reverse Engineering and Emulating the Motorola DSP563xx

This DSP has been used in plenty of virtual analogue synthesizers and other musical gear that was released after around the mid 90s, such as Access Virus A, B, C, TI / Clavia Nord Lead 3 / Waldorf Q, Microwave II / Novation Supernova, Nova and many others.

Here is the full list of synths we are looking to use inside of our emulator

Access Virus TI

images via this auction

"Increased Polyphony
New synth features for the Virus TI Desktop include greatly increased polyphony, 2 new oscillator types, a per-patch programmable arpeggiator, 16 x 2 delay/reverb fx, embedded singles in multi mode, and much more.

Bigger Display
In fact, a much bigger Liquid Crystal Display, which can show graphics (128x32 pixels). The Virus TI Desktop's display shows up to 4 rows of text and graphics. In most cases three parameters are being displayed at the same time. As a result, there are only 1/3 of the menu pages in comparison to the previous VIRUS series.

The First Sample Accurate Hardware Synth
The Access Virus TI Desktop links to your computer with VIRUSControl, a companion software product which ports the hardware synth into a host sequencer for use as a sample-accurate VST/AU instrument, simultaneously offering 2-way audio and MIDI connectivity, control surface functionality, editor and librarian functions, and more.

Quicker Editing
3 edit knobs underneath the Virus TI Desktop's display which can edit three parameters at the same time. The 3 soft knobs can also act as programmable and nameable knobs for every individual patch.

Scalable USB
A scalable USB link connects the Virus TI Desktop to a Mac or PC for total integration of synth and studio. The VIRUSControl™ plug-in automatically detects and connects the synth, ensuring a hassle-free configuration every time. From inside a host application, the plug-in enables the Virus TI Desktop to appear as a multi-channel VST/AU soft-synth with up to 4 sub-mixes (or 2 x stereo). Access' proprietary driver technology makes Virus TI Desktop the world's first hardware synthesizer with sample-accuracy timing and a delay-compensated audio/MIDI connection. Seamless interconnectivity also provides a real benefit in the software sequencer environment. All multi-timbral sounds and settings used for a project are stored within it with the plug-in, for snapshot total recall plus editor and librarian functions with no SysEx or 3rd party software hassles.

24-bit 192KHz Balanced Analog, S/PDIF I/O and MIDI
The new Virus TI Desktop is also well-equipped to capitalize on the power of Total Integration. With 24-bit 192KHz balanced analog, S/PDIF I/O and MIDI in and out ports, the new Virus TI Desktop is well-suited for use as the main audio and MIDI I/O center for your entire rig. These functions are especially practical for the laptop studio, offering an unmatched range of features and capabilities from one product.

Remote Mode
Additionally, a new Remote Mode allows the Virus TI Desktop to become a control surface for any MIDI-capable device or software, mapping each of the 33 knobs to a specific MIDI message. Virus TI Desktop ships with a great selection of templates and includes 32-user memories for custom controller maps. It's a powerful addition that greatly increases the value of the synth's studio footprint.

* Increased polyphony, 2 new oscillator types, arpeggiator, 16 x 2 delay/reverb fx.
* Bigger Display.
* Functions as a sample accurate VST/AU instrument.
* 2-way audio and MIDI connectivity, control surface functionality, editor and librarian functions.
* Quicker Editing.
* Scalable USB link for total integration of synth and studio.

Synth Shorts - Access Virus B - Fat Pad & Analog Trance Dreams

video upload by Eyezer Productionz Sound Design

"A fat pad I made with Access Virus B via DSP56300 emulator. This pad is somewhat of a re-creation of the Paradise Pad that can be found in some of my Adam Szabo Viper soundbanks.

FX used: Valhalla Room, Valhalla Delay, Fruity 7 Band EQ, Virus B Phaser & Chorus."

Synth Shorts - Access Virus B - Analog Trance Dreams

"This is a patch I made on the Access Virus TI, but I used the DSP56300 emulator to play this patch with the Access Virus B instead. This patch combines the trancy sound of the Virus with the lush sound of an Oberheim synthesizer.

FX used.: Valhalla Room, Valhalla Delay, Fruity 7 Band EQ.
Midi used: Gouryella - Ligaya"

Access Virus Dark Cinematics - Live Jamming

Published on Jul 8, 2017 SynthMorph

"Access Virus Dark Cinematics Live Jamming - using 4 instances of Virus Powercore (4x16=64 voices), I improvised and jammed with the Virus Dark Cinematic presets for an hour, using some of my custom developed Synthmorph tools.

All sounds were recorded straight to four Cubase audio tracks, then quickly top'n tailed the best parts, but no mixing and equalization took place. I wanted to keep the live feel, creating the slideshow was a fast action too.

This audio demo will present you the darkest, trippy and sinister side of the Access Virus. These Virus patches are perfect for cinematic, television scoring, movie soundtracks, original lo-fi electronica, game music, ambient electronica or space music.

Access Virus TI VS Access Virus B (DSP56300 Emulator)

video upload by Eyezer Productionz Sound Design

"For a long time, there has been a debate about the sound being different throughout the Access Virus series. Some say that the pre-TI versions sounds different or 'better' than the TI. Of course this makes sense to some extent because the TI has more features, while the older models have fewer features (although the Virus B/C have 16 voices of global unison, which the TI hasn't). So what I decided to do was to play mostly Virus B patches on both the B and TI, to hear if they sound different or not.

What I noticed during this test was some of the patches sounds identical on both models, while some patches sound notably different (I picked the ones that sound notably different for this video). I don't know exactly why that is. What I do know is that the reverb sounds brighter in the Virus B, but I don't know how much else is potentially different. Supposedly, the sound engine is the same throughout the Virus series, which probably is true but I suppose perhaps Access have done some slight changes whenever a new model was released. For example, the first patch in the video, AutoBend BC, sounds the same on the Virus C and the TI, but different on the Virus B.

Next time, I will start from scratch and do some of my own patch programming.

New Patch Base Editors for the Access Virus TI Snow, Virus TI, and Virus C

via Coffeeshopped:

Back in November, friend of Patch Base Stefan George (who helped with the MKS-50 and DW-8000 editors) contacted me asking if I'd like to borrow a Access Virus C and Virus TI Snow in order to make editors for them. I gladly took him up on the offer.

December and January were mostly eaten up by fixing bugs and improving performance in Patch Base, not to mention avoiding other viruses, so it wasn't until the end of January that I actually got to work with these synths. And they are complex! Then February came, and almost a week of that month left our home without electricity (and heat) due to the worst winter storm Texas has seen in my lifetime. But now here we are in March, and the new Access Virus editors are here as well.

The Virus is the best-sounding virtual analog synth I've heard. And the TI line in particular has the most parameters I think I've seen! The modulation capabilities and the deep effects sections of the synth are astounding. The editors Patch Base now offers capture all of that depth in a compact form for quick access to any part of the synth. Below I'll go in-depth with the Virus TI Snow editor. The Virus TI editor (which also supports the TI2) is almost identical, with the exception of offering 16-part Multis rather than the TI Snow's 4 parts."
