Synthpop Svengali Vince Clarke loves Leipzig-S

"KINGSWINFORD, UK: British ‘boutique’ analogue synthesiser and accessory designer/manufacturer Analogue Solutions is proud to announce that legendary synthpop Svengali Vince Clarke — musical mastermind behind one of the most successful songwriting duos of all time — has added a Leipzig-S analogue monosynth/step sequencer to the stunning synth collection currently residing at his NYC-based studio...

Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly, and Erasure all have two things in common: one, they were founded by Vince Clarke; two, they have all enjoyed catchy Clarke-penned, synth-driven Top Ten hits in the UK and beyond. In a noteworthy career spanning four decades and countless millions of records sold, Clarke has had more hit singles than most of us have had hot dinners, clocking up no fewer than 17 Top Ten entries in the UK with Erasure alone. And let’s not forget five consecutive chart-topping albums — not bad going in the increasingly disposable world of pop, be it synth- driven or otherwise.

Clearly, Clarke knows a thing or two about songwriting, as attested to by being honoured with 2009’s Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection by BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors). Of course, Clarke can comfortably find his way around a fair number of synthesisers, too, as attested to by the well-earned songwriting success-funded collection of analogue classics currently residing at his NYC-based studio, recently relocated from a custom-built cabin in rural Maine to inner-city Brooklyn. But this is no millionaire’s museum piece, but rather a unique personal workspace, where each and every awe-inspiring instrument within regularly earns its keep on a variety of musical projects, with Clarke becoming something of a sought-after remixer of late, as well as collaborating with former Depeche Mode bandmate Martin Gore for the first time in 30-odd years as techno-inspired two-piece VCMG.

Yes, Vince Clarke certainly knows a great-sounding synth when he hears one, which is exactly why an Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S analogue monosynth/step sequencer has made the transatlantic crossing to join him in Brooklyn: 'It’s a real ‘hands-on’ synth — lots of knobs, thick sound, and truly analogue.'

Leipzig-S creator Tom Carpenter echoes Vince Clarke’s considered sentiment, for it is, indeed, truly an analogue affair; both its voice and modulation circuitry are analogue through and through, fashioned from discrete components. No naughty digital LFOs or EGs are allowed here, thank you very much! All its well-spaced, high-quality potentiometers are hardwired directly to the circuitry beyond to ensure all that old-school, carefully-crafted analogue goodness gushes forth for all to hear. And no memories mean that each and every parameter is ‘live’ to the touch, without any unwanted CPU-induced quantisation and stabilisation side-effects — What You See Is What You Hear, in other words!

But that’s not all: a direct descendant of its namesake Leipzig (rack-mount) and Leipzig-k (keyboard) analogue monosynth predecessors, the rack-mountable/desktop Leipzig-S literally goes several steps further by incorporating an inbuilt eight-step analogue sequencer that can be used to produce superficially simple melodic lines, as well as acting as a modulation source to affect the (fat Moog-style) filter cutoff, or to create additional effects — depending on other control settings, with VCO1, VCO2, and the VCF all available as sequencer destinations. Seemingly simple, yet favourably flexible, the step sequencer can be creatively clocked by multiple sources — at audio frequencies (using VCO2 as a clock source), or using the output of the sequencer itself as an audio source to be ‘played’ via MIDI while the eight step controls then alter the ‘waveform’/tonal content, for example, such are the adventurous advantages of amalgamating an analogue step sequencer with a true analogue monosynth! Vince Clarke is, naturally, no stranger to the joys of step sequencing: 'I really like it that the sequencer is hardwired to the oscillators and filter, which makes for instant electro-ness.'

One thing’s for sure: synths are likely to remain Clarke’s calling card for the foreseeable future, an analogue-accepting, sweet-sounding time ahead that’s sure to include Analogue Solutions — analogue by name, analogue by nature. Clarke just can’t get enough... of his Leipzig-S: 'I’ve used it on a couple of EDM tracks I’m working on, creating some big, fat bass sounds; there’s still lots more to explore.'

Leipzig-S is available to order online directly from Analogue Solutions (http://www.analoguesolutions.org.uk/concussor/leipzig.htm) for £749.00 GBP, excluding VAT and delivery, or through one of their dealers. (Alternatively, a keyboard-equipped version — the Leipzig-SK — is available for £1,099.00 GBP.)"

You might remember the pic from this previous post.  This is one is quite a bit larger.

This video is created by request from several Leipzig owners who desire a visual starting point to begin creating percussion on the Leipzig-s synth. All pots can be seen clearly in the video (use 1080p for full screen) and many unused settings are set flush left.

In this video, the Leipzig-s is not connected to MIDI, but is stepping the sequencer from its own LFO. Everything is done in real time.

For more creative drum patterns, the Leipzig can be attached to MIDI and used alongside your DAW.

The Leipzig synth line has incredibly fast envelopes and percussion/drums are some of its strong suits.

New Analogue Solutions Leipzig V3 Synthesizer

video by Analogue Solutions

"The new Leipzig V3 synthesizer has arrived for 2021.

Taking its cues from the legendary and distinctive Leipzig line of synthesizers, the V3 is truly 'evolutionary' and now features the same convenient footprint as our acclaimed Impulse Command desktop synthesizer - while capturing the same raw, ballsy, complexly rich sound as its Leipzig predecessors.

Version 3 combines features from both the Leipzig-SK as well as the mountable Leipzig v2, including patch points for additional sound design and connection possibilities. For example, you can drive the synth via an external CV sequencer or patch it to other modules in your Eurorack case.

This demo features a variety of sound samples (patched and unpatched, sequenced and unsequenced) from the Leipzig V3. Watch this space for more videos and visit our website for more detailed information."

Quick note: I don't want to get into policing auctions but I heard the price for this one is a little high. Perfect Circuit usually has great prices imo, so I will check with them.

Update: I heard back. They are following MAP prices set in place by the manufacturer according to a recent price change. They aren't allowed to lower the price and they do ship for free.

Original post description:
"Coming Analogue Solutions are proud to announce availability of Leipzig-S, the latest addition to its lengthening line of critically-acclaimed, quality-crafted boutique designs from founder Tom Carpenter in the true spirit of vintage analogue synthesisers befitting the true analogue synth enthusiast.

Evolving from its namesake Leipzig (rack-mounting) and Leipzig-k (keyboard-endowed) analogue monosynth predecessors, the rack-mountable/tabletop Leipzig-S literally goes several steps further by incorporating an in-built eight-step analogue sequencer that can be used to produce simple melodic lines as well as acting as a modulation source to affect the filter cutoff (or to create additional effects, depending on other control settings). VCO1, VCO2, and the VCF are all available as sequencer destinations; seemingly simple, yet favourably flexible, the step sequencer can be creatively controlled (clocked) by multiple sources, at audio frequencies (using VCO2 as a clock source), or using the output of the sequencer itself as an audio source to be played via MIDI while the eight step controls then alter the waveform/tonal content, for example, such are the adventurous advantages of packaging an analogue step sequencer with a true analogue monosynth.

The entire design is traditional early-eighties analogue (voice and modulation) circuitry, comprised entirely of discrete components and op-amps (bar, of course, the digital sequencer controller and MIDI-CV interfacing); since the Leipzig-S is a strictly no-memory affair, all controls are not quantised, resulting in an authentically vintage sound, replete with musically desirable quirks and subtle artifacts (much in the same way that, say, a valve amp or vinyl record adds sonic character), unlike some other modern analogue synths that arguably sound almost as perfect as DSP analogue modelling.

With electronic percussion having influenced the choice of routings, the Leipzig-S boasts a huge range of modulation possibilities to facilitate creating the widest possible range of sounds, including deep basses, sound effects, analogue loops and (obviously) electronic drum sounds. With this, his latest design, true analogue synth enthusiast Tom Carpenter is confident that he has achieved a modern analogue synth that truly does sound vintage.

Features

Pure analogue voice and modulation circuitry
2 x VCOs (each with Glide and Sub-VCOs)
Osc sync and cross-mod
Flexible modulation routing
Rugged steel/aluminium construction
Leipzig-S modulation choices provide for good drum possibilities"

"Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S Analogue Synthesizer and Step Sequencer - as new and hardly used. Comes complete with box, manual, power supply and 11 months manufacturers warranty. Sounds fantastic, but I simply have too many analogue monosynths already, so it has to go.

KEY FEATURES OF LEIPZIG-S

Pure analogue voice and modulation circuitry.
Fat Moog style transistor ladder filter.
2 VCOs with Glide and Sub-VCOs.
Osc Sync & Cross-Mod
Plenty of modulation routing possibilities.
We are a big fan of electronic percussion here, so Leipzig-S modulation choices provide for good drum possibilities
Analogue step sequencer – with plenty of clocking options.
Audio input so can be used as a sound processor.
Rugged steel/aluminium construction.
MIDI In for software sequencer control.

This synth has NO memories! - Advantages;

None of the parameters or controls are quantised. So when you turn a knob, you are turning a resistor that affects a real analogue circuits.
Because each parameter is not under solid CPU control, each parameter has that tiny analogue drift that adds so much to character.
You are forces to be creative. No reliance on presets! Each time you make a sound you are being original.
Quick, easy and simple to use! WYSIWYG - no nasty menus and sub-menus to change the sound.

Differences between Leipzig-S/SK and the original Leipzig;

Envelopes are now full ADSR

EGs can be disconnected from MIDI trigger

VCO2 can be disconnected from MIDI (free running modulator!)

Analogue step sequencer

VCF can be modulated from either EG1 or EG2"

YouTube Published on Jul 21, 2012 by Allen Weldon

"This is the Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S Analogue Synthesizer and intergraded analogue sequencer. This is a synthesizer with pure voice and modulation circuitry featuring two voltage controlled oscillators w/4 types of selectable sync plus glide and PWM, a sub oscillator, 4 VCA Options EG 1&2,Gate and Thru, a noise source/ext in, LFO, a self resonating 24db voltage controlled low pass filter w/tracking, several cross modulation options for VCO 1 & 2 and Filter, 2 snappy ADSR's w/selectable MIDI Trig Switches (very good for percussion) The intergraded 8 step analogue sequencer is what puts it into a league of its own. There are 8 clocking options including LFO, VCO2, MIDI Key, Accent, Ext 1, MIDI CV-2, MIDI Sync,-. There are also destination knobs on the sequencer for VCO1 VCO2 and Filter that provide voltage controlled modulation according to the destination source and amount from the modulation section. This is a badass synthesizer that is in a category of its own.

In this patch I'm using the intergraded sequencer clocked by VCO2. The sequencer is being triggered by EG 1+2 (I'm also using the MIDI Trigger switches from Envelope 1 & 2) VCO2 is synced to VCO1. The VCA mode is set to Thru. Towards the end I started clocking the sequencer using the switch provided in the mixer section. It clocks the sequencer at audio frequencies, then the sequencer becomes an audio freqeuncy."

Analogue Solutions Ships Nyborg-24

"Analogue Solutions ships space-saving real analogue monosynth module with ‘Moog-style’ filter

KINGSWINFORD, UK: British ‘boutique’ analogue synthesiser and accessory designer/manufacturer Analogue Solutions is proud to announce availability of Nyborg-24 — a ‘Moog-style’ 4 Pole 24dB/Octave LOW PASS FILTER- equipped standalone monophonic synthesiser module with REAL ANALOGUE VOICE & MODULATION CIRCUITS that essentially shares the same features (and the same form factor) as its white-faced Nyborg-12 ‘Oberheim SEM-style’ 2 Pole 12dB/Octave MULTIMODE FILTER-equipped sibling released to critical acclaim earlier this year — as of October 13...

The appropriately-named Nyborg-24 not only looks different to its appropriately-named Nyborg-12 synth sibling — thanks to their obviously opposing front panel colour schemes, but also sounds different — thanks to sharing the same ‘Moog-style’ 4 Pole 24dB/Octave LOW PASS FILTER found in the company’s critically-acclaimed Leipzig-S analogue monosynth/step sequencer (whereas the Nyborg-24 shares the same ‘Oberheim SEM-style’ 2 Pole 12dB/Octave MULTIMODE FILTER found in the company’s Telemark semi-modular analogue monosynth). Moreover, it is what these form factor- and feature-sharing synths have in common that makes them stand out from the analogue renaissance crowd, constantly swelling in numbers as it is. Indeed, as they both proudly state on their black (Nyborg-24) and white (Nyborg-12) rugged steel/aluminium casings for all to see (and hear): REAL ANALOGUE VOICE & MODULATION CIRCUITS

But what does REAL ANALOGUE VOICE & MODULATION CIRCUITS actually mean? Meaningfully, then, apart from its high-quality 16-bit DAC (Digital-to- Analog Convertor) for MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) to CV (Control Voltage) conversion (which, by its very nature, has to be digital), like Nyborg-12 before it, Nyborg-24 is absolutely analogue through and through, hand built (by humans) using real transistors and op-amps. Unlike other so-called analogue synths you’ll find no CPU-stabilised and quantised circuits, DCOs (Digitally-Controlled Oscillators), digital LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators), or digital EGs (Envelope Generators) hiding here, thank you very much! Instead its circuitry is based on tried-and-tested, distinctive- sounding designs dating back to the late-Seventies, so Nyborg-24 sounds suitably vintage in character — surely destined for much praise by Analogue Solutions’ loyal customers. Cast aside those bland-sounding digital synths and DSP-based soft synths and dial in Nyborg-24 whenever a full range of synth leads, basses, excellent-sounding electronic percussion, and all manner of subtractive synthesis-derived sounds are the musical (and not-so- musical) order of the day (or night)!

Speaking of dials, Nyborg-24 boasts an abundance of high-quality, smooth potentiometers, fully sealed against dust intrusion, together with high- quality knobs with spun aluminium caps — all as appealing to look at as they are to turn! Two super-stable VCOs (Voltage-Controlled Oscillators) — each providing a whole host of options and MODULATION sources — are available to start turning the most adventurous analogue musical dreams into reality. Thereafter, Nyborg-24 continues to follow the traditional, well-trodden analogue synthesiser signal path with its distinctive-sounding 4 Pole 24dB/Octave LOW PASS FILTER; AUDIO MIXER (VCO 1, VCO 2, NOISE/SUB); LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) with triangle and square wave modulation signals and MODE switch to route CV2 (velocity control voltage) or S+H (Sample and Hold) signals to that 4 Pole 24dB/Octave LOW PASS FILTER or those VCOs; VCA (Voltage-Controlled Amplifier), controllable from EG2 or GATE with BYPASS option (allowing Nyborg-24 to be used as an external effects processor) and CYCLE setting (so the envelope is constantly re-triggered by the LFO, allowing for hands-off sound effects); and ENVELOPE 1 (VCF) and ENVELOPE 2 (VCA). As such, it should feel familiar to anyone with a modicum of subtractive synthesis skills... so much so, in fact, that reading of its accompanying user manual may only be necessary for finer operational detail: “Do not use a carwash or jet wash to clean this synth.” Surely as good advice as you’re going to get from anyone anywhere!

And speaking of communicating with the outside world, with an intentionally easy yet effective MIDI implementation — CUTOFF control of Nyborg-24’s all-important 4 Pole 24dB/Octave LOW PASS FILTER is available via MIDI velocity or a MIDI controller — and external CV (Control Voltage) sockets for PITCH1 (VCO), PITCH2 (VCO), CUTOFF (filter), GATE (to trigger the EGs), and EXT (for feeding an external CV to various circuits), DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) integration or working with an analogue step sequencer (such as Analogue Solutions’ own Oberkorn and recently-released Megacity) is a breeze. Better still, simultaneous MIDI and CV operation is possible, so users could, for example, use an Oberkorn to play a little melody then transpose that step sequence using a MIDI keyboard controller (or MIDI sequencer). Child’s play? Perhaps.

Note Nyborg-24 — like Nyborg-12 — can be user configured in various ways to save space to suit. Shipping as a vertically-orientated standalone monosynth module (much like its bigger brother, the Telemark), it is possible to rotate Nyborg-24’s front panel so that it can be used horizontally as a desktop device. Optional wooden side panels can be screwed to a single Nyborg-24 (from its inside so no ugly screws are visible) or to two Nyborg-24s that have been bolted together. It is also possible to rack-mount two Nyborg-24s that have been bolted together using the optional rack ears. (Of course, it is perfectly possible to bolt a Nyborg-24 to a Nyborg-12 and also rack-mount this perfect pairing for full filtering flexibility.) Either way, Nyborg-24’s modified software allows two Nyborg-24s to be poly-chained together to play as a single two-voice polysynth. Four-voice polyphony is also available upon request for those looking to really push the boat out and purchase four Nyborg-24s, though one Nyborg-24 is still a very versatile, super-sounding, space-saving standalone monosynth module in itself. One that will serve any adventurous analogue renaissance man, woman, or child well for many years to come.

Nyborg-24 is available to order online directly from Analogue Solutions (http://analoguesolutions.com/nyborg-24/) for £499.00 GBP (plus tax and delivery) or through an authorised dealer, as are its optional rack ears (£19.00 GBP, plus tax and delivery) and wooden side panels (£39.00 GBP, plus tax and delivery)."

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s

YouTube Uploaded by jakobsweb on May 7, 2011

"Analogue Solutions new synth: the Leipzig-s.
A very beefy analogue sound engine with a very unique edge, more on the rougher sound side. I've grown a soft spot for AS synthesizers eversince I got their Telemark which I cannot praise enough. Being a modular and semi-modular fan I do miss patch points on the Leipzig-s and maybe a multi-mode filter to enhance the already vast sonic flexibility of this machine. But aside from my wishlist and personal preferences I must admit that the Leipzig-s is a most powerful musical instrument.
Here I teamed the Leipzig-s up with the Telemark, Vermona DRM1 MKIII drums, the Doepfer A-100 and a string pad from the Roland JX 8-P - ALL sounds are purely analogue.
It's a fairly large file - apologies for that. Headphones recommended. The predominance of the Leipzig-s in the mix is intended."
