Roland JX-8P Song - Travel Away

YouTube via audibleobsession | November 17, 2010

"Although this video is very short, I feel the accompanying track I made does a great job of showing where the Roland JX-8P shines. The pads are heaven and the bell like leads are like no other. This is one of my favorite synths and, IMO, is hugely underrated. All patches were programmed by myself using a free VST editor I had found online but can't locate anymore (glad to share the .dll if anyone is interested)."

Moog Slim Phatty Song - Moogolar System

YouTube via audibleobsession | December 05, 2010 | 0 likes, 0 dislikes

"I've made the following video with the intention of testing out and demonstrating the smoother, more thoughtful side of my new Moog Slim Phatty (but not without some durt! Look out for the noise and the very wet sounding S&H at the 1:40 mark). All loops are first takes, just cycling through some preset patches and building a simple song together. There is no additional processing.

Please note that the Slim Phatty sounds exactly the same as the Little Phatty. I own both and picked up the Slim Phatty for rackmounting in my live rig. I'm not sure how I feel about the cosmetic differences; the Slim Phatty does feel quite a bit cheaper...but, then again, it is cheaper!"

"Came across a fun little music sequencing game today. Since there were no videos on YouTube, I thought I would share some of the fun things you can do with it. It's quite addictive!

Roland JX-8P Soundscape - Picture in Your Mind

YouTube via audibleobsession

"The Roland JX-8Ps sonic character tends to draw me into a dream-like state. It's stubbornly loud resonances can be difficult to tame in a full mix, but it's partly this quality that makes it a unique and interesting synthesizer. A few nights ago, I was watching some Archive.org videos when I stumbled on this gem from 1948. I found myself playing an LFO based "arpeggio" on the JX8P while watching the movie. It wasn't long before I was multitracking my way to a soundscape. Again, it's not perfect (no processing or editing of any sort) but its certainly hypnotic. As always, glad to share my JX8P patches (I have them all on my desktop, since I use the VST editor). Just message me on YouTube. Here's a link to the full movie:

Moog Doom

YouTube via audibleobsession | November 12, 2010

"I felt nostalgic tonight and loaded up my favorite game of all time: DOOM. Except, my Access Virus TI was plugged in as my audio interface and it had overridden the default Windows MIDI. Since my Moog was plugged into the MIDI Out of the Virus, guess what started playing as the game booted up? That's right, MOOG DOOM!"

KORG Monotron Song - Tiger Dance

YouTube via audibleobsession | October 28, 2010

"A simple KORG Monotron groove. All sounds are played with the KORG Monotron Analogue Synthesizer. Additional drums from NI Battery 3 (Preset "Dragon Kit") and convolution reverb from NI Reflektor. Compression and EQ from UAD 1176LN, Helios Type 69 EQ, and Ableton Live's 8-Band (mostly for LPF to get rid of that notorious hum that plagues the Monotron). Line-in recording into my trusty M-Audio Firewire Solo. That's it!

Dancing girls are public domain videos found on archive.org.

Apologies if the bassline and groove get repetitive, really just a quick tune trying to show the kind of badass basslines and leads you can get from the Monotron. It really shines when you get some nice PWM going and push that MS20 filter hard. The LFO self oscillates nicely too. Overall, the best $60 bucks I've ever spent. Looking forward to moding it now."

Synth Cover - Forty Six & 2 (Version 1)

YouTube via audibleobsession | December 23, 2010 | 0 likes, 0 dislikes

"A healthy dose of Moogs never hurt anyone. I've started working on a synth cover of a great Tool song and this is the first version of Moog scratch tracks. Its mostly Little Phatty and Arturia Moog, laying down a good foundation for the next version; keep posted, as I'm hoping to upload them all as a sort of "making of" series.

I always felt that Tool riffs were perfectly suited for monophonic synths and I'm having a real blast working this one out. Footage is from Archive.org, as usual. Thanks for watching!"

Novation Launchpad and MAX/MSP Game

YouTube via audibleobsession | November 14, 2010

"As part of my experimentation with MAX/MSP, I thought it would be fun to design and program a few games for my Novation Launchpad. Here's one of them I like to call "Speedpad". This is just a short clip of the game, but the game get quite difficult as the colors and speed increases with each level. Your score is recorded and there's a "Hall of Fame" (of course!). There's also some nice FM synthesis going on when you successfully hit the pads in time. I've got a few more fun games that I'm hoping to post soon and, as always, I'm glad to share the Patcher (just message me on YouTube). The background track is a little tune I made a few weeks ago, mostly with the Moog Little Phatty and a free Mellotron VST. Thanks for watching!"

Launchpad controlling a MAQ16/3 using Live

YouTube via attorks
"Thanks to YouTube user audibleobsession I managed to program Ableton Live to be able to control the Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer with the Novation Launchpad. There are still 2 problems with that:
1- When I push the buttons in user1 mode I can hear the MAQ16/3 going a little out of sync with the Live tempo. I managed to work around this by disabling the MIDI output to the Launchpad in Live. Disadvantage is that all the LEDs are disabled in the user1 and user2 modes so there is no visual feedback.
2- When I push a button (e.g. first step = 2) for sequencer row 1 and then switch to sequencer row 2, when pushing the same button the MIDI message does not seem to be sent. I first have to push another button (e.g. first step = 3) which then transmit OK and then push the button I intended to push which then also transmits OK. I guess it has something to do with AutoMap.

Another limitation is the Ableton Live version that comes with the Launchpad which has a maximum of 8 MIDI and 8 audio tracks. I used 5 MIDI tracks in Live to control the MAQ16/3 in nearly the same manner I did in the last video. I am only using the top 4 rows in user1 mode. The buttons on the first row turns step 1 to 8 off and the second row turns step 1 to 8 on. The third row sets the first step of the 8 step sequence and the forth row sets the last step of the 8 step sequence. Also the top 4 arrow buttons on the right are used. The first one turns all the steps off and the second all the steps on. The third one chooses the first row on the MAQ16/3 sequencer and the forth one chooses the second row on the MAQ16/3 sequencer. You first have to choose the row on the sequencer whereafter the buttons apply for that row.

The first row on the MAQ16/3 sequencer drives the Synthesizers.com Modular and the second row the self-built Modular. The MAQ16/3 is also synchronized with the tempo from Live. Vertical row 7 controls the Creamware MiniMax ASB which does the bass notes. The other rows contain samples from Live and some of my own.

I intended to also capture the Ableton Live screen to give you a view whats going in Ableton Live but that AVI file turned out to be corrupt after the recording was finished. The full video is about 13 minutes which I will upload soon to my website."
