Futre-Retro XS Bacon Session 3: Lesson 1 & 2 knobbery

YouTube via shagghie
"Bacon was exhausted after 1 and 2... on this one, he allows Shagghie to touch the knobs..even more than one at time. Video demonstrates lessons gleaned from a 1 & 2. Please note, and this is no joke, that my camera mic broke during these sessions during my first take..the bass coming out was so strong and subsonic, that now the mix has a white hiss noise and doesn't work the same. A Cannon Elf too!"

"Bacon demonstrates how to turn this knob on the all-new F-R XS. The only thing that sizzles more than Bacon is the XS. More to follow, but watch them in the right order, if you don't mind."

Matrix Green MachineDrum (Shagghie ft. Bacon the Flying Pig)

YouTube via shagghie

"Sneak Peak Preview of a track called Detroid that Bacon and I are working on. Green MachineDrum transformation was no easy feat, but with help from Pavel (http://pavel.kirkovsky.com), and after many months of dealing with obtuse factories in China...the green display was provisioned, and matching LEDs installed, along with black faceplate with the "Shagghie" logo (artwork by VictorJohn of Tekfunk Recordings). It turned out so perfect that we are building another one just like it as we speak for my live PA's. Thanks for all of Katy Rokit's support as well, can't do squat without her these days... :)
Thanks to Jon of Elektron too, for another great NAMM and for the constant hope of 'something new' just in time for 2010 from the Elektron Elves...I'm sure Dan is going to smile from above!
Lastly, a huge thanks to Matrix of MatrixSynth (matrixsynth.blogspot.com) for all his years of ongoing support to the synth community. This one's for you...from Bacon and I." Thanks Shagghie and Bacon! :)

Update: some more detail from Shagghie: "It's a customized MachineDrum... the displays are no longer being made, so sourcing a green one took the better part of 5 months using google translator and visiting chinese and swedish websites.... the LED's from Mouser. The top is a custom black top. Other than that, it is a MD UW mkII underneath..."

East Beast Demo and Thoughts

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Oliver of Patchwerks shares an overview, demo and his thoughts on the Cre8audio East Beast, a semi-modular synthesizer.

Learn more about the East Beast here: https://bit.ly/east_beast

East Beast’s oscillator, designed in partnership with the too serious for words people from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers, is a part of their 5th generation of analog oscillators stemming from a super-serious 10 years of continued research into analog oscillator development.

Cre8audio’s super serious friends at Pittsbugh Modular Synthesizers are just as serious about filters as they are about oscillators. East Beast’s filter is a multi-mode filter, meaning it can be used as a low pass filter, high pass filter, bandpass filter, or a combination of the three for an even wider sonic palate.

New Transistor-80 Analog Percussion Module Eurorack Demo #1

Published on Jul 23, 2017 gstormelectro

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c.2017

The Transistor-80 is an analog percussion module I designed as a lo-fi incarnation of those transistor-based CR- DR- and TRs from the circa 1980 era. It is thump-y, hiss-y, and it has those click-y pops and bacon sizzle sounds. Sports 3 sounds: Bass Drum, Snare Drum, and Hats. Bass has a tone control that controls the amount of sub frequency (you may hear a slight boom if you're wearing headphones) the other two sounds have decay controls. It has individual volume knobs for each sound, and a single output jack for the mix. In this video I am feeding trigger gates from the Malekko Varigate 4, and recording output directly to Tascam DR-5."

Reflections in Space // OP-1 Ambient Techno

video by Eon Edge

"Rediscovering my OP-1.

After listening to Rykard's Arrive The Radio Bacon on repeat for a few days, I fell in love with gritty, unswept, bitcrushed digital sounds. And what better instrument than the OP-1 for this kind of sounds?

I took my OP-1 out from its case where it has been lying for months, and rediscovered how fun it is to make music on this machine. Yes, the synth engines are quirky and lo-fi, and the tape workflow it's not the fastest for writing a full song, but it's so fun to play with! Every time I switch it on, I get lost in hours of sound design, and inevitably come up with a few interesting loops.

So here's a track born from a simple arpeggiated sequence, I don't even remember which synth engine I used for this sound, but if I could take it on a date, I would. It sounds so interesting!

I consider this track as a training exercise to get familiar again with production techniques within the OP-1 itself, programming drums, building sections, adding transitions, etc. The long-term objective is to master the instrument and write a few songs, but mostly to remind myself how fun and rewarding it is to make music.

Hope you like it!

All sounds from the OP-1, mixed and mastered in Logic Pro.

Modular Bacon 03: Blizzard

Published on Jan 5, 2014 Autotross·8 videos

"Recorded live during today's blizzard, burrrrr!

Patch Notes:
Wind from Doepfer A-118 Noise generator fed through Intellijel uVCF with cutoff modulated by the 118's random volt output. Truck idling and driving away created with MakeNoise DPO's final output jostled about by Function on repeat. Sirens made the same way using the saw output and slower Function modulation.

Stay warm!"

GOD's BOX Humpback // Multimode Eurorack filter with BAGS of character!

Published on Oct 18, 2019 DivKidVideo

"Here we have a newly re-panelled version of the Humpback filter from GOD's BOX. This is an 8HP SEM style multimode filter with a 2 pole response across the individual low, band and high pass + notch outputs. The input level can drive the filter for that lovely harmonic 'burn' and the two CV inputs affect the cut off with attenuators. It responds well to audio rate modulation for YOI bass, glottal overtones and odd pinged hits. The resonance is severely "hot rodded" beyond the normal SEM inspired filters giving a wide range of soft and warm bass to all out chaotic screams. I stumbled upon a weird way to create distance concrete car park reverb trails in your kick drums too. So skip around below and if you have any clue what's happening with that odd reverb I managed to create - let me know.

Tiptop Audio Announces Granular Effects and Time Fabric Pitch Cards for the Z-DSP

http://www.tiptopaudio.com

Grain de Folie

"Granular Synthesis uses small slices of sounds (‘grains’) to compose new sounds from existing material. By combining multiple grains of differing lengths, amplitude, pitch and speed new sound are created which are often very different from the original sound recorded in. Xenakis claims to have invented the technique and indeed his ‘Analogique A-B’ [see the embed below],composed of tiny tape splices of pure tones, is credited as the first piece of granular music bacon 1959.

In the context of the Z-DSP, a block of memory is set to hold digital samples for playback: the Z-DSP has one second of memory for the audio used in processing. From this audio buffer the grains will sample and modify smaller sections for playback. The number of grains in the process determine how dense the overall output sounds. these programs have 3, 4, or 6 grains for playback. Each grain plays from a random point in the audio buffer and have an independent envelope controlling their duration. The envelope time is the ‘grain size’ parameter in many of the programs.

The French phrase for the cartridge is “Grain de Folie” which could be translated as “seeds of madness”, but in French “grain” also translates to “grain”, and “madness” evokes the strange disassembling/reassembling granular process. Also, “avoid un grain de foil” is a typically French expression to describe people behaving in a non conventional way, thus a fitting play on words quite nicely describing the unpredictable nature of this set of algorithms."

Time Fabric

"“It fucks with the fabric of time!” Tony Visconti describing Pitch Shifting to Brian Eno and David Bowie in 1976. That not so subtle description does quite neatly sum up what the Pitch Shift programs on the ‘Time Fabric’ card do!

Pitch shifting in the Z-DSP uses a technique called ‘rotating tape head’ delay lines named after pioneering tape based experiments in Germany in the 1960s. The tape heads move at speeds independent of the tape playback path and two heads are crossfaded to make a continuous output capable of beautiful pitched delay effects, harmonization and smooth reverbs.

These pitch shifting algorithms are much like the earliest digital pitch shifters released. Sounds similar to the Eventide H910, AMS 15-80 (with Pitch board) and Publison DHM 89 can be achieved. These programs are intended more for pure effects rather than the complex multiple harmony lines later devices and plugins became known for producing. Chords from single VCOs can easily be made using the ‘Interval’ programs on the card though.

Using a Z3000 to clock the Z-DSP, complete chaos from the delay lines and pitch shifting emerges, creating great and unexpected new sounds. Modulations the stereo pair of analog VC-Feebacks animates the time and distance of the pitch shift opening up these algorithms for additional control from CV and audio signal alike."
