http://phobos.serve.com/charles_cohen/

Update, Charles Cohen does have a CD out.

Update: Charles Cohen's homepage.

Via AH. Ever wonder what a Buchla Music Easel can sound like? Well here you go. Well over six hours worth of Charles Cohen on the Buchla Music Easel. Pretty amazing stuff. More on Charles Cohen.

Studio tour of the Experimental Televsion Center in Owego, NY

"A short piece of video shot at Owego during a residency. We documented our set-up in the studio. 1992.

The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video"

12-10-92 by The Luminists

"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video
(1992)

In this piece Charle's Buchla synthesizers were directly controlling various video devices, shaping and patterning video feedback images and fading visual elements in and out of the scene. 12-10-92 was created in real time on at the Experimental Television Center during a residency in 1992."

Dancing Calligraphy by The Luminists

"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video
(1992)

Dancing Calligraphy was created at ETC in Jan. 1992, and edited later that year. In this piece we slowly strip away the layers of processing to reveal the source feedback that forms the basic ground from which the imagery arises.

In Dancing Calligraphy, the imagery was created utilizing control voltages from Charles' analog Buchla Synth controlling the Paik Raster Control Unit, the Jones Colorizer, and Jones Sequencer. We also used MidiMice and Buchla's Thunder midi controller to trigger DPaint4. The DPaint4 image cut a key in the video, revealing the many layers of processing that make up the final image."

FLASHER 003 by The Luminists

"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video
(1994)

FLASHER 003 is an ETC studio version of one of our live pieces. The piece offers impressions of a relationship in the process of disintegration. In it Charles triggers still frames of two bodies which are then weaved together (but not quite) through rapid fire live switching and ”editing”. The rhythm is determined through midi coming from Charles’ controller."

Satan's Web - Gabriele's Lace by The Luminists

"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video

Satan's Web was created at the Experimental Television Center during a residency in 1994(?)."

Charles Cohen and Signal 2 Boys Live in Philadelphia.

If you don't know who Charles Cohen is, check out this post. Title link takes you to more info on the show tonight. Do a find for Cohen when you get there. If you want to see a Buchla live and you are in Philly, here's your chance. According to Charles Cohen's website, the show starts at 8PM and is actaully free.

"SIGNAL 2 BOYZ is Philly's most angular, funky, and explosive electro-acoustic improv unit, featuring the legendary Charles Cohen! Utilizing a deceptively simple system known as "Transformative Groove", the ensemble creates shifting grooves, timbres, patterns, and structures that are about as unpredictable as they are infectious.
Signal-2-Boyz is: -Charles Cohen (Buchla Music Easel Synthesizer/electronics) -Amnon Freidlin (guitar/loops) -Andrew Gaspar (turntables/electronics) -Joe Lentini (MIA: Jamaica) -Evan Lipson (bass/devices) -Dave Smolen (analog electronics)
The ensemble's general aesthetic has evolved into a process of sonic layering or lamenationin which sounds may be frozen in real time (and/or from a previous moment), by a hyper-subtle process of looping and manipulation. Careful attention is payed to aspects of foreground and background texture, dynamics, density, pulse, contrasting colors, as well as various modes of poly-rhythmic/metric/tempic playing. This type of playing is smoothly juxtoposed with a more freewheeling yet interlocking language of varying complexity, where a large emphasis is placed upon purely timbral and sonic experimentation. These two areas freely flow in and out of each other, creating a sound that can often become quite raucous and 'grooving' (in the truest sense of the word...an area that S2B generally feels is largely ignored by most in the field of experimental improvisation), or very spatial and reduced in texture..."

This colorful video features sound artist Charles Cohen improvising on a 1970's Buchla Music Easel. This extremely rare instrument is one of Don Buchla's 200 series. Buchla (a pioneer of audio synthesis) only manufactured 14 of these units. The entire film was edited from an hour-long set of free improvisation, with audio was taken directly from Charles' mixing board.

All of the photography and editing was produced by Alex Tyson, a sound and video artist from Pennsylvania. The film was shot in 16:9 720p High Definition format, using a 35mm LensBaby 3GPL.

"This is used to store presets..."

Bottom shot for perspective. Note the small patch point connectors.

Update: Chad made an interesting point in the comments. "You can also brush your finger across the board while playing for cool little blips of sound as new connections are made between your finger and the board. :)"

Circuit bending a Buchla? A bit blasphemous but this would be one way to do it.

Update: if you haven't already, be sure to see these two videos of Charles Cohen for this technique [thanks to Wavedeform for the reminder in the comments]:

Update via Christian in the comments: "charles told me that alex, the guy who filmed the video asked if such a thing was possiable. charles had a blank card, whetted his fingers and voila. it had never occored to him before. charles uses both this technique and programed cards during performances: such as the one him and i will be giving on 3/4 at the rotunda (in phila). i'm playing the big buchla :)"

Ctm Workshop: Charles Cohen @ Schneidersladen

Ctm Workshop: Charles Cohen @ Schneidersladen from Andreas Schneider on Vimeo.

"Charles Cohen is a master synthesizer improviser who has been a central figure in Philadelphia/East Coast experimental, avant-garde, and improvisational scene for the past 40 years. He is one of the few living artists to own and have mastered Don Buchla’s 1973 Music Easel, a rare, performance-oriented portable synth made from two modules of the Buchla 200 series.

Cohen will host a workshop illuminating both his unique creative philosophy and musical practice. He will also present the new re-issue of the original Buchla Music Easel system, produced in close consultation with Don Buchla himself.

The workshop will culminate in a collaborative jam session, during which participants are invited to use their own analogue equipment, as well as the equipment found at Schneidersladen, famous with audiophiles world-wide for its expansive selection of weird and wonderful sound generating devices."

Chicago Modular Musickal Extemporization Klinic June 19 2010

"The XART Studio + TRASHAUDIO.COM will be hosting more fun for 2010. Charles Cohen + hair_loss (Color Is Luxury) will be in Chicago to do a modular synthesizer/ electronics based improv workshop/clinic!

- a talk and demo of the architecture of the Buchla Easel
- a Performance + discussing and working up patches suitable for free improv + small group jams / improv games
- try ideas out, collaborate (and listen!) + plenty of time for give and take all along the way!

Seating/Spots will be limited. This is a RSVP workshop with a modest donation.

If you are interested get on our list: email: kultbox@gmail.com please put Chicago Modular Musickal Extemporization Klinic in the subject! We will forward information.

the Color Is Luxury sound is always improvisational, changing and evolving, ranging from very dense and harsh to minimal and ambient, beats to spacey, based on their mood at the time and the atmosphere of the space they're playing in. Regardless of the situation, they manage to come up with something special.

Charles plays a Buchla Music Easel, a rare analog performance instrument he acquired from master synth maker Don Buchla in 1976. he performs regularly in Philly with various folks on the techno, noise, jazz and new music scenes.

hair_loss plays a variety of esoteric and mainstream effects pedals and devices, which he wires up differently for each show, thus always keeping Charles guessing. hair_loss is also involved with SNOWSTORM & Jive Nation, and collaborates frequently with other Philadelphia artists.

----COLOR IS LUXURY (CHARLES COHEN and hair_loss, philly. deep listening/ruby red) master of the buchla music easel, the legendary and prolific electronic improviser teams up with hair_loss (electronics). noisy, hypnotic, chaotic, bubbling. anyone with even a passing interest in analogue synthesis or jazz improv will not want to miss this.!"

Beeps and Boops in perspective - an Interview with Charles Cohen

Interview on Data Garden

"Known for his virtuosic live performances, the artist has performed hundreds of times throughout the US and internationally. His instrument of choice is one of the rarest (and coolest) synthesizers in existence, The Buchla Music Easel. The design of the keyboard, which is chromatic and touch sensitive, allows Charles to affect sound and space in unconventional ways. Data Garden unearths some of his past and present sights and sounds, and asks the man himself a few questions."

Charles Cohen will be playing the launch event for the new electronic label, Data Garden. Color is Luxury, this Sunday in Philadelphia."

Color Is Luxury & The Glass Bees / Sept 25

via One Thousand Pulses

"Irising out of the bowels of Philadelphia come Color Is Luxury, a duo of longtime circuit benders Charles Cohen, artful manipulator of the Buchla easel, and the artist who goes by the moniker hair_loss. Ripping the innards out of their respective electronic arsenals, this diminutive motley crew twist their varied sound palettes into corkscrew whorls of new shapes, sizes, and, yes, colors. Noise not noise, tonally consciously eve…n when they go all atonal on us, Color Is Luxury are true sonic provocateurs sharing a rich aural history that blossoms before your very ears.

The Glass Bees define their multidisciplinary art project as a means to indeterminate ends." See One Thousand Pulses for more.
