VINTAGE Simmons Digital Clap Trap Handclap Synthesizer

via this auction

"Excellent condition considering the age and rarity of these units. Sounds awesome and is highly playable and tweakable, making it easy to dial in the perfect clap sound.

The Simmons Digital Clap Trap was used on many hit-records of the 1980s and is becoming an increasingly rare collector’s item. Perfect for interesting clap sounds and noise hits, this hard to find Simmons piece does the trick. This version of the Simmons uses a sampled clap plus noise that is controlled/manipulated by an analogue circuit. Can sound pretty realistic, or not if you push the settings.

The Clap Trap allows you to balance between a clap and noise sound. Pitch and decay adjust for each sound. Very nice sound and surprisingly useful for such a straight-forward device. You can trigger it from an external trigger or audio input, manual trigger button or use the auto-trigger mode (with adjustable speed). The humanizer feature alters the pitch of successive claps. To hear the humanizer effect in action, use the manual trigger and play it very quickly."

Simmons Clap Trap

images at this auction

"Simmons Clap Trap, also known as the Musicaid Claptrap. This is one of the later originals, as it is already screen-printed 'Simmons'... This differs from the later Clap Traps in that every part of the sound generation is analogue - the later ones had a digital clap sample in them. Nasty... Has two elements to the sound - Ensemble and Crash, with a Balance control between them.

Ensemble simulates the actual clap sound, with controls for Ragged/Tight (time between hands coming together) and High/Low (pitch). There is also a Humanizer control to add a random element to the sound.

Crash is a noise generator, with controls for Long/Short (decay) and High/Low (pitch).

There is a Manual Trigger button and an Automatic repeat button, with variable speed. The Clap Trap can be triggered from just about anything - mic, sensor, tape, synth, footswitch.

Power switch on the rear with Audio Out, Foot, Synth and Audio trigger inputs (with adjustable Sensitivity). Also an input to switch the triggers in and out."

Pre-Simmons MUSICAID CLAP TRAP - Rare and Historic Analog Hand Clap Synthesizer SN 411

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For sale in excellent condition - has a few small dings to the finish and a couple of the knobs. I has lived in my studio for years after living many years in it's previous studio. This is made by Musicaid before Simmons bought them and put their badge on the Clap Trap

115v. AC which is rare, I've only seen a couple others and they were both 240v.

'The original, wildest Clap Trap - there are very few analogue Clap Traps in existence and many are the later Simmons version rather than the first one from Musicaid. Famously-used (and abused) by Throbbing Gristle and The Human League among others...

Sonically it offers a wide range - from huge oceanic crashing waves of noise to rhythmically-challenged helium finger pops (thanks, Ensemble control) - there's also occasional near-realistic electronic claps in amongst the myriad options. This is a very early unit and is pretty wild compared to the later ones - some ear-piercing resonance at higher settings make this a contender for serious techno-abuse.'"

Simmons Digital Clap Trap Demonstration

YouTube Uploaded by 76420236 on May 1, 2011

"This video is a demonstration of the Simmons Digital Clap Trap. Watch, listen and be amazed as the Clap Trap adds hand clap and noise in sync with the audio input. The audio source used as the clap trigger is a music cue from a '60s TV show set in Hawaii and, later in the clip, from a movie that may have been about a cat from outer space. Source audio was sampled and looped with a Boss SP-202 (Dr. Sample). Both sounds are then run through the BOSS SE-50 stereo effects processor which is used first only as a dry mixer with a phase effect setting used at the end."

SIMMONS CLAP TRAP

YouTube Uploaded by holyghostnyc on Jun 25, 2011

"Here's a rundown of the various functions/knobs...

AUTOSPEED: This controls the speed of the internal sequencer or "AUTO" mode and was one of the repaired controls. The pot is original but the wiring to the board was replaced. Works as it should.

AUDIO SENSITIVITY: This is the sensitivity for the external trigger input. You adjust the knob according to the type of signal. I.E. a trigger from a drum pad would require higher sensitivity than line level audio like, say, a sound from a drum machine. Works as it should but as you can see the knob itself is not original.

PITCH (CLAP): This controls the pitch of the clap sample. This is one of the pots that was completely replaced. Works as it should.

DECAY (CLAP): This sounds pretty self explanatory but if you've ever played with one of these things you know it's not quite a true "decay" in the traditional sense. Yes, when at it's lowest setting you get a very tight short sample and the sound will increase with length as you turn it up BUT as get to around the 3 o'clock position the it actually starts to loop a part of the sample in a very strange way. You can hear it in the video link below. It's pretty wild sounding and works as it should.

PITCH (NOISE): Another weird one as this knob isn't so much a pitch control for the noise but a filter for the noise. You can here it in the video. This pot is other that was totally replaced and as you can see the knob is not original but it works exactly as it should.

DECAY (NOISE): This controls the decay for the noise. At it's lowest setting you get very tight percussive white noise attacks and at it's highest you get nice long noise crashes. Works as it should.

BALANCE: This is basically a crossfader for the clap sample and the noise. When at 0 all you will hear is the clap and at 10 all you will hear is the white noise. It's worth mentioning that the noise a bit louder than the clap which is to say that with the knob centered, the noise will be louder than the clap. Not sure if this is normal or not and, of course, you can still get a good even balance by turing the knob slightly more towards the clap but, again, thought it was worth mentioning.

LEVEL: This the volume knob and power switch. Pretty self explanatory. Works as it should.

AUTO BUTTON: This engages the internal non programmable sequencer.

HUMANIZER: This is very cool function that when engaged slightly randomizes the clap sample's pitch resulting in a slightly more realistic - or "human" - feel. Sometime it takes the button a few tries to engage as you can see in the video it does work most of the time.

TRIGGER: This is the manual trigger which you can use to play the clap trap by hand without an external trigger/pad."

Simmons Digital Clap Trap Drum Percussion Synthesizer

via this auction

"The Simmons Clap Trap is a rare and early electronic drum module. Capable of producing some pretty gnarly sounds that you might not usually associate with a hand clap. Can be triggered by audio or manually. Double your snares with the Clap Trap for fattening or feature the instrument all on its own. This fun little toy is prefect for producers looking to add out of the box textures to their tracks!"

Update: This is Digital as the name of the unit states, and not analog as the title of the auction listing states.  Thanks goes to alx @t0neburst for catching it!

"This hard to find Simmons Digital Clap Trap is in great working condition. This is a simple unit, allows you to balance between a clap and noise sound which can take you from the classic "P-Funk" clap to abstract percussive noise. Pitch and decay adjust for each sound. Very nice sound and surprisingly useful for such a simple device. You can trigger it from an external trigger or audio input, manual trigger button or use the auto-trigger mode (with adjustable speed). The humanizer feature alters the pitch of the claps. To hear the the humanizer, use manual trigger and play it very quickly. (Just had to state that here so you don't think it's broken if you buy it - it's a subtle effect!)"

Musicaid Clap Trap

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"A rare early analogue Musicaid Clap Trap in good cosmetic condition and very good working order.

I recently had this serviced by Synth Restore in Bedford so it’s ready for studio use or live!

There is minor wear and tear but overall it's in good condition. One knob is missing its white cap.

There are very few analogue Clap Traps in existence. Famously-used (and abused) by Throbbing Gristle and The Human League among others...

Sonically it offers a wide range - from huge oceanic crashing waves of noise to rhythmically-challenged helium finger pops (thanks, Ensemble control) - there's also occasional near-realistic electronic claps in in amongst the myriad options. Wall of SIMMONS Electronic Drum Brains on MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Mar 28, 2015 Gerald Stevens

"My collection of SIMMONS electronic drums: the legendary SDS 8, the under-recognized SDS 400, and the Digital Clap Trap. Fantastic analog drum goodness. I'm selling 'the wall' over on Matrixsynth classifieds. I just don't [use] them enough."

via MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS

"I'm selling my "wall of SIMMONS" - fantastic analog drum machines. If you're looking at this, you're already familiar with what they are - knobby, bassy, awesome. Brains only (no drum-pads - but includes a midi interface). Priced less than equivalent set on e-bay. Comments on condition:

SDS 8 - missing one blue knob cap - light surface rust here and there, and a few scratches (visible in pictures). Functions / sounds fantastic. A beast!

SDS 400 - (personal favorite) - great shape. Missing two rubber "feet" - get them from digikey if you want (not hard to replace). This one is packed with CEM3394 goodness - more versatile than the SDS 8, and 100% analog too unlike other later models. The "second skin" (ring mod?) The chips alone are worth $200 - they're used in the Doepfer Dark Energy and other synths.

Digital Clap trap - Fantastic shape - fantastic sound. You really need this for your 80's double clap.

MIDI SDS - a simple 8 channel midi (CH6) interface. It can't trigger all 10 voices that I'm selling, but close enough. Nice thing about this unit is that a sustained note sends a sustained trigger to the SDS, allowing super-long analog notes to be played on the SDS 8. Just play staccato notes if you want drum hits to sound like drum hits and not the mothership's engines roaring.

These are used - and sold AS IS. Video shows that they're working well. Buyer pays actual shipping. US only - they weigh a bit. I'll keep shipping as low as possible, while packing very well."

CLAP TRAP HANDCLAP SYNTHESIZER MADE IN ENGLAND BY SIMMONS

Product sheet scan below.

"Here is a very sought after vintage musical device: The Simmons Clap Trap with Humanizer function. It is the last of the analog versions of the Clap Traps before they went digital. It is an analog handclap synthesizer with controls that allows you to shape the handclap sound from a thin click to an almost drum slamming sound, and play them back on the unit. It also provides different trigger inputs in the back and the ability to alter the sensitivity of the trigger signal. This unit was used on such 80s hits as Gary Newman's CARS and Kim Carnes' BETTY DAVIS EYES."

SIMMONS CLAP TRAP DRUM SYNTH

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Simmons digital clap trap. A somewhat rare and very unique sounding analog/digital clap generator.

works perfectly, can do anything from tr808 snares, to various snaps and claps and crunching sounds. The perfect thing to layer under samples to get an organic sound with some variety.

the outer cases of these are made of a shiny plastic so they are really easy to scuff and scratch, as such its not perfect."
