The Yamaha CS80 & CS70M - An Exploration of Two LEGENDS!

video upload by Vintage Synthesizer Solutions

"Please join us while we do a direct sonic comparison of these two classic Yamaha synthesizers. As is widely recognized, the CS80 is arguably the most legendary synthesizer ever made. Just under 800 units were produced at an MSRP of roughly $7000 each in 1978. The CS70m was the follow up flagship model and retailed for just under $5000 in 1981. We could not find the production total for the 70m (if anyone knows, please share in the comments!). However, like its sibling, I would guess that less than 1000 were made during its production run which ended in 1983 as Yamaha prepared to release the DX7.

While they do not sound identical by any means, we hope this video demonstrates how incredibly under recognized the CS70m is within the CS Poly family. It is the closest you can get to the CS80 in terms of feature set, voice architecture, and dual channel sound. For the prices people ask today for the CS50 and CS60, one would be smart to look for a 70m instead (IMHO!).

The audio is DIRECT & DRY - You are hearing the raw audio as it comes directly from each synthesizer. NO post processing (Effects or Dynamics) was done.

Thank you so much for watching! This channel is a passion project. We are just two hobbyists who share a deep passion for synthesizers. Please consider subscribing, we would greatly appreciate it! 🙏

**I am not a professional keyboardist! :)**
*On the CS80, the sliders labelled: "Sub Oscillator" = LFO*
Fun Fact: The CS80 has 8 voices; the CS70m has 6.

Yamaha CS70M Polyphonic Synthesizer Brochure

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Yamaha CS70M Polyphonic Synthesizer brochure. Vintage 4 page, full color, glossy paper, in very good condition. The Yamaha CS70M was a very powerful synthesizer in its day and you could actually lift it. Too often overshadowed by the more famous Yamaha CS80. This vintage brochure covers many of the functional details and specifications and has a beautiful 2 page photo of the Yamaha CS70M inside. See pics. It is hard to find and even harder to find in this condition. Used however punch holes from the vendor. Very Good condition otherwise. No writing, no highlights, no tears and no fold from mailing. No address labels. No music store stamp. Great addition to you synthesizer brochure collection."

Every way the CS70M is BETTER than the Yamaha CS-80!

video upload by Vulture Culture

"Many people do not know about this rare, vintage synthesizer, the "update" to the greatest analog polysynth of all time. The CS70m was Yamaha's last chance to capture the analog synthesizer market before they went all in with digital synthesizers like the DX7. Today there are less than 1,000 that have survived. I think this synthesizer should be considered as legendary as the Roland Jupiter 8, Juno 106, Sequential Prophet 5 and Oberheim OB-X. It's older sibling, the Yamaha CS-80, was championed by Vangelis, who wrote and performed the score to Blade Runner.

Yamaha CS70M

It's interesting that Yamaha had three distinct CS lines of synths. There's the CS5, CS10, CS15, and CS30 mono synths, the CS20M, CS40M, and CS70M, the CS50, CS60 and CS80 and of course the grand daddy of them all... The kick ass CS1X! - well, it actually is a fun little synth for the money. If you ever wondered what the CS70M sounded like, title link takes you there. There are a couple more shots as well. So why did Yamaha do this?

Yamaha CS70M polyphonic synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Yamaha CS70M calibrated by Gazdatronik

YouTube Uploaded by Gazdatronik on Jan 31, 2012

"Here it is with no outboard effects, or even a mixing board. The left channel contains the upper voice group, the right channel, lower."

via this auction

"It is essentially two six voice synthesizers in one case, that trigger two voice channels each for six voice polyphony. That means it has each single oscillator has its own filter, for a total of 12 filters. The filters and oscillators are the same parts found in the CS-80. Other unique features include:

A sine wave bypass which is not filtered, to get additional bass.
Aftertouch, which can control the filter, pitch, and amplifier- independent of the mod wheel
A built in sequencer with both live recording and step recording
Voice channel A and B have separate outputs
Has a Hertz/Oct Gate output for controlling external monosynths
A "keycode" input which interfaces the keyscanner directly, which midi controllers do exist for
CV(foot controller) inputs for Filter, volume and modulation
The "Yamaha CS" ring modulator
Auto Glissando
Lowpass, highpass, and bandpass selection
String machine chorus, and leslie simulator

This keyboard has had its power supply completely rebuilt. All new transistors, diodes, op amps, and capacitors. Any resistors not within tolerance have also been replaced. This was a result of six year long period of teaching myself how to diagnose and repair electronics. I installed a connector well off of the power supply to more easily read voltages should future service be needed."
