Spiff Diffey - knobtwist-ambient modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague | December 17, 2010 | 4 likes, 0 dislikes

"Space really is the place isn't it? 4 pre-conceived circular voices from Nodal feeding the modular and mixed for your pleasure in real time- nothing' fakey. Thanks for watching, you watchers! This is in Super-Locrian mode BTW and started as a demo of such. And so it turns and twists.
PS for synth listeners- this is why I like octave switches, for tonal stuff anyway."

Update:

Spiff Diffey Part 2 - modular synth jam

doctorvague | December 18, 2010 |

"In this episode we have 4 voices generated from Nodal (strange software sequencer) to a MOTM 650 MIDI-CV converter. The system is mostly synthesizers.com with 2 MegaOhm Delta filters, Suit and Tie Guy Post-Lawsuit (Arp) filter and wavefolder, Modcan VCDO and Digital Delay, Encore Electronics UEG, and MOTM 440 filter. Thanks for watching!"

Foregone Inclusion - analog modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague
"Korg Monopoly (lower right) arpeggiator being clocked by the top row of the Moon Modular trigger sequencer (upper left). Bottom row of the sequencer is setting the Digital Delay time of the Modcan delay (far right white module). The Korg MS-20 (lower left) is being used for the filters in the feedback loop of the Modcan delay. NOTE: rest of patch and cords was leftover from another patch and has nothing to with what you're hearing. What you're hearing is the Monopoly into the Modcan delay with MS-20 in the delay loop - a very simple patch. The Monopoly is an amazing instrument IMHO. I'm just starting to see its potential. Ditto for the Moon trigger sequencer. It's a whole rhythmic instrument that can be played in real time.

This actually should have been called Part 3. It was the very ending of a much longer improv. The complete track is on Virb - doctorvague - Foregone Inclusion.

May I say just a general very hearty thank you for the kind comments and good juju here on youtube. Thanks to people watching - even you lurkers! And also to the grrrrreat folks who build all this cool stuff to play with and the friends at Muffwiggler's - an awesome hangout. Fun toys - good times."

Summer Chill - doctorvague ft. Peter D.B.

YouTube Uploaded by doctorvague on Aug 15, 2011

"This was a lot of fun! It was patched up very quickly and improvised in one take. My good friend Peter Dahl-Bredine is triggering samples in NI's Battery which I'm then filtering with a Megaohm Delta filter and a Rob Hordijk Dual Phaser. Everything: loops, samples, Korg Monopoly etc were all routed into and through the modular and mixed in real time to stereo track. Loops came from Stylus RMX and and were mixed at the modular with a custom MIDI controller I built (middle row far left with the 6 red buttons). Sync pulses were sent from MOTU's Volta and divided by a Moon Modular trigger sequencer. As usual, echo is from Modcan's fabulous stereo digital delay. Hope you all enjoy this. We want to do a lot more collaborating with real hand drums, guitar and... well, we have a lot of ideas.

Am To Be Part 2 - Modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague — April 04, 2010 — 3

"Numerology voices with randomness into MOTM 650 MIDI to CV converter to synthesizer.com oscillators. Encore UEG and synth.com EG's into Megaohm and dotcom VCF's. The Numerology gates were fed into a Moon Modular trigger sequencer for further rhythmic exploration. The bottom row determines the very jagged delay times on this one."

Percy Hammersledge - modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague
"This was a fun one- I hope you enjoy it. The modular is a live stereo mix unedited. I jammed to a Bossa Nova drum loop and then mixed and mashed some loops after the fact to make it a bit more interesting. Used SynthesizersDOTcom, Modcan, Suit and Tie Guy, Moon Modular, MOTM, MOTU Volta and a DIY switcher in the upper right. I'm sending various rhythmic trigger pulse streams, including off-beats from Volta and switching them at the matrix switcher. The bottom row controls the delay time for example. I managed to hit the right combination of switches a couple of times and got lucky with some cool syncopations like at 2:29. This is the last section of a much longer jam."

Barking Spiders - modular synth improv

YouTube Uploaded by doctorvague on Jun 24, 2011

"Modular being fed by 2 voices from Numerology software. MOTM 650 MIDI-CV converter and 440 filter, Hordijk Dual Phaser (featured heavily, lower right), Modcan VCDO and DDL, Moon Modular 563 trigger sequencer, DIY switcher, STG Wavefolder, Encore UEG, and Synthesizers.com 107 filter, slew limiter, 2 EG's, 2 osc (one as LFO) and mixer. All sounds originate from the Modcan VCDO and one synthesizers.com Q106 oscillator into a Suit and Tie Guy wavefolder. I'm using the wonderful Hordijk Dual Phaser in lowpass mode more than phaser mode as I find the sounds a lot more interesting."

StereoPhonic Presto-Now! - modular synth D'n'B 171 BPM

YouTube via doctorvague — April 29, 2010 —

"Completely dry as a bone right off the modular in true StereoPhonic Presto-Now Sound! Drum loops created in Numerology using Drumaxx and BFD for the sound sources. Loops triggered with an Akai APC40 just below view with Ableton Live. Then the loop audio is piped through the modular for full mangle-ation and vague-rifying.. The Korg Monopoly arpeggiator is being triggered from a Moon Modular trigger sequencer and sends pitch out to Synthesizers.com oscillators with much secret inter-patchology we cannot divulge at this time. The moon triggers are also sent to dotcom EG's, VCA's etc. MOTM440, MegaOhm Delta and Suit and Tie guy Post-Lawsuit filters are also implicated in this incident. This is the last half of the first take. Thanks to MUFFWIGGLER for pushing a bit. I LOVE fast music so expect a few of these... fast is the new medium."

Cwejman S1 Demos

via doctorvague on electro-music.com

"Demos of the S1Mk2 controlled by 2 Doepfer A-155 sequencers and a few other support modules including a Modcan dual quantizer. The sound is S1Mk2 with no patch cords other than Gate/Trigger and CV in. Nothing on the audio except a UA 140 plate reverb and a stock plug-in limiter to bring levels in line. Triggers generated by a DIY interface described geekily here: http://www.electro-music.com/forum/topic-28737.html"

MegaOhm Delta VCF modular synth demo

YouTube via doctorvague
"Also features the Encore Electronics Universal Event Generator. The only sound source is a Modcan VCDO into the MegaOhm filter into a Modcan DDL. The Rhythms are from the Moon Modular 563 Trigger sequencer using a Synthesizers.com envelope generator. Pretty simple patch trying to show of the Delta filter which I am really enjoying very much. It's very expressive- and responsive like a good sports car."

A smooth theme

YouTube via attorks
"Kind of inspired by DoctorVague and Ian Boddy (when in Red Shift), I am experimenting with Ableton Live to see if it can be a help in analog sequencing. And tonight this lovely sequence came up so I thought, lets make a video. I have 2 MIDI tracks and 1 track with a drum loop. One MIDI track controls the self-built Modular and the 2nd MIDI track the Creamware MiniMax ASB. I couldn't connect the DotCom because I have only 1 MIDI/CV converter. Both MIDI tracks have several clips with looping 8 step sequence in different keys. But I have not found out how to change the clip of the 2 MIDI track at the same time and at the right bar so I click the clip on each track which causes the odd discrepancy in clips/keys and changing too soon; sorry for that. The melody is performed on the Roland XP-80 with a Mellotron voice. The Waldorf is doing what a Waldorf is good at; making these Waldorf sounds. The soloing is done on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 with an organ-type voice."

Why yes I do Like Echo - Part 3 - Analog modular synth improv

YouTube via doctorvague
"last bit of a long improv
the arpeggiators of the Korg Monopoly and the Roland Juno 60 are being triggered by the awesome Moon Modular 563 triigger sequencer. Roger Arrick's awesome synthesizer.com rig in here all over the place. And Eric at STG. And Bruce at Modcan."

Son of Cyclosity - modular synth + Numerology

YouTube via doctorvague

"Previously improvised Numerology session played back in 3 voices fed to a MOTM 650 MIDI interface to 2 synthesizer dotcom oscillators and a Modcan VCDO into MOTM 440 filter (to the right of the white Modcan - kickass filter) and below that the dotcom State variable filter, 2 dotcom EG's and all that geeky stuff baby! Much use is made of the dotcom oscillators' soft sync in, with musical intervals driving the aforermentioned. This is an overdub for a bigger piece with loops and like, 'real' music."

Non-Somnambulistic Part 19 - modular synth + Numerology

YouTube via doctorvague
"The very tail end of another long jam. Audio is right off the camera, dog barks at 5:10 and all. I kinda like the raw-ness and rough edges of it. Couldn't get that vibe from the direct mix.

I heart and used the following in this episode: Synthesizers.com mostly + MOTM 650 and 440, + STG Post Lawsuit filter + Modcan VCDO . Volta used for sync into the 4 rows of a Moon Modular trigger sequencer. Numerology was doing other things earlier but by this point it's set on like 31 against 29 or something to mess with yo head. And it may indeed drive you crazy. That's your problem now."
