Expert Sleepers release Silent Way v1.0.0 (Mac AU)

"Expert Sleepers are proud to announce the release of Silent Way, a suite of plug-ins designed for use as part of a modular analogue synthesiser system. The plug-ins produce no sound themselves, nor do they process sound - rather, they generate signals to be used as control voltages (CVs), which can be patched into the control inputs of oscillators, filters, VCAs etc. of an analogue system.

There are currently two plug-ins in the Silent Way suite - Silent Way DC and Silent Way Voice Controller. These are described in more detail below. It is anticipated that more plug-ins will be added to the suite in the future - watch the website for product announcements.

All plug-ins also feature
* full MIDI and OSC control.
* MIDI/OSC scriptability.
* sample-accurate handling of MIDI note messages.

*Silent Way DC*
Silent Way DC is a simple plug-in that generates constant output signals. It is intended to be used in conjunction with parameter automation (via MIDI or directly by the host application) to generate varying signals. For example, you could use it as an LFO where you draw out the LFO waveform in your host’s parameter automation GUI.

*Silent Way Voice Controller*
Silent Way Voice Controller is a virtual instrument plug-in designed to directly control an analogue synthesiser by generating the appropriate CV and gate signals via an appropriate audio interface.

By listening to the synthesiser’s output signal, the plug-in is able to calibrate itself to generate the appropriate pitch CV for the incoming MIDI notes.

As well as the basic pitch and gate signals, the plug-in can generate three multi-stage envelope CVs which you can feed to VCAs, VCFs etc. in your synth.

*Pricing and availability*
Silent Way is available immediately in Mac OS X Audio Unit format, priced at $49. Mac and Windows VST formats to follow.

Expert Sleepers are currently offering a reward for purchasers who document successful use of Silent Way with their modular system - see the website for details."

The Polyphonic MicroBrute

The Polyphonic MicroBrute from Andrew Ostler on Vimeo.

"This video shows four Arturia MicroBrutes working as a four-voice polysynth.

The MicroBrutes are connected via MIDI to an Expert Sleepers ESX-8MD module, driven by the Expert Sleepers Silent Way software. Silent Way takes the polyphonic MIDI generated by the controller keyboard and distributes it between the MicroBrutes, so that each works as one voice of a polysynth.

This setup allows the Silent Way/ESX-8MD combination to replace a standalone polyphony distribution box. However there are many other advantages to generating MIDI via the Expert Sleepers system: see e.g. http://vimeo.com/26444600

Expert Sleepers announces first hardware product - ES-1 Audio/CV Interface

http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/

Expert Sleepers are proud to announce details of their first hardware product - the ES-1 Audio/CV Interface.

The Expert Sleepers ES-1 Audio/CV Interface is a Eurorack module designed for use with software such as Expert Sleepers Silent Way (http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/silentway.html). It connects to an audio interface using standard 1/4" jack (balanced or unbalanced) or DB25 (aka DSub) connectors, and outputs CVs to analogue synths/effects on standard 3.5mm jacks. When used with the Silent Way AC Encoder software (http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/siwaacencoder.html), there is no requirement for the audio interface to be DC-coupled.

The ES-1 offers the following advantages over directly connecting an audio interface to analogue gear for CV control:

* No requirement for the interface to be DC-coupled.
* No need for special cables (e.g. TRS to TS 'floating ring' cables).
* No danger of damage to the interface - the ES-1's inputs are
completely standard balanced audio inputs.
* Much greater output voltage range - up to 9x more than directly
connecting a DC-coupled interface via a 'floating ring' cable.

For more details, please see the ES-1 page at
http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/es1.html"

Expert Sleepers ES-8 - Introduction

Published on Sep 15, 2016 Expert Sleepers

"The Expert Sleepers ES-8 is a USB audio interface in a Eurorack synth module.

Simply connect the ES-8 with a USB cable directly to your Mac or iOS device and it appears as a 12-in 16-out audio interface ready to use for audio, control voltages, or both.

Both inputs and outputs are DC-coupled, meaning you can pass CVs in both directions between your hardware modular and software CV environments, such as Silent Way, Reaktor, zMors or max/MSP.

The ES-8 also has ADAT ports, which you can use to connect another audio interface, for example one with mic preamps or 1/4” jacks to hook up your other instruments.

You can also connect via ADAT to an Expert Sleepers ES-3 for more CV outputs.

The ES-8 also has a direct expansion connection for the Expert Sleepers ES-5, supporting up to 48 gate or trigger outputs.

The ES-8’s release date is October 1st 2016. For more information, please visit the website.

Audulus 3.4 Update Adds Support for Multichannel Audio/CV Output

"Audulus LLC is proud to announce the release of Audulus version 3.4 - a free update for all Audulus platforms* allowing users to access up to 16 audio and control voltage (CV) inputs and outputs through two brand-new nodes called ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and DAC (digital-to-analog converter).

Previously, Audulus users were limited to two inputs and two outputs using the Mic and Speaker nodes. Now, with the ADC and DAC nodes, Audulus users can take full advantage of their DC-coupled** audio interfaces, such as the Expert Sleepers ES-8 and the Universal Audio Apollo.

This means that users can now integrate Audulus seamlessly with hardware synthesizers and analog effects pedals using their computer or iOS device.

Some examples uses include:
Sending and receiving simultaneous audio, modulation, and envelope CVs to up to 4 Eurorack filters for true analog filter polyphony
Clocking multiple Korg Volcas at different speeds or divisions of a master clock
Sequencing analog synthesizers with volt-per-octave (VPO) signals
Receiving multiple DC signals from hardware controllers like CV joysticks and ribbon controllers for ultra-high-resolution control over your digital synthesizers
Receiving, quantizing, and sending out analog VPO signals
Generating LFOs and envelopes of any imaginable shape
Using stompboxes on a send & return within your Audulus patches
Cloning, adapting, and modifying true work-alikes of digital and analog Eurorack modules
Generating quadraphonic or surround-sound-style effects for keyboards and guitar
Receiving an analog master clock and generating divisions, probability triggers, or Euclidean-style rhythm sequencing (or mix of all!)
Storing, recalling, and rapidly switching between different modular synth patch routings
Analyzing a guitar’s pitch and volume envelope within Audulus and converting them to an analog VPO and envelope signal
Using Audulus as a multi-effect rack with 4 mono inputs and outputs or 2 stereo inputs and outputs (with an Expert Sleepers ES-8)

These are just a few of the possibilities Audulus users have explored so far. To keep up with patches and modules using the new ADC and DAC nodes, sign up for the Audulus user forum and download and share your patches there - http://forum.audulus.com

An example of Audulus sequencing VPO signals and envelopes through an Expert Sleepers ES-8:

Users can also follow Audulus on Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Soundcloud, and Facebook @audulus for tutorials, video clips, and sound samples of what the ADC and DAC nodes can do.

If Audulus users have any questions about how to implement the ADC and DAC nodes, they can contact Audulus at support@audulus.com

Happy patching from all of us at Audulus!

* Audulus iOS requires the Apple Camera Connector Kit to connect to the Expert Sleepers ES-8.

**Most normal audio interfaces are AC-coupled. AC-coupling prevents a constant DC offset from damaging speakers and headphones. DC-coupled audio interfaces like the Expert Sleepers ES-8 are not required to use all 16 inputs and outputs of an audio interface or aggregate device. DC-coupled audio interfaces are required to send and receive accurate DC-offset analog signals such as gates, VPO signals, and envelopes.

Example Videos of Audulus + ES-8

This picture shows a self-oscillating filter entering Audulus through audio input 4 of the Expert Sleepers ES-8 using the ADC node, and sending two oscillators through outputs 7 and 8 of the ES-8 using the DAC node to the Mordax DATA oscilloscope in XY mode."

Expert Sleepers ES-3 Lightpipe/CV Interface

"The ES-3 is a Eurorack format module which converts eight channels of ADAT Lightpipe input to DC coupled outputs on 3.5mm jacks, for the ultimate convenience in connection of a DAW directly to analogue synthesizers.

The outputs can be used as control voltages (CVs), for example with software such as Expert Sleepers Silent Way, and can also be used as audio outputs at high, modular synth-compatible levels.

With the ES-3, a single optical cable is all that is need to bring direct CV control from your DAW right into the heart of a modular system..."
