The Ondomo by Asaden - Ondes Martenot Redux

Uploaded on Jul 28, 2016 Adrien Duchemole

The above is a demonstration by Adrien Duchemole who is lucky enough to own one of the first Ondomos.

[Update: I found a few additional demos of the Ondomo on YouTube. Three, including the initial unveiling of the first version in 2014,  have been added to the bottom of this post.]

In October of 2012, a post here on MATRIXSYNTH featured the Asaden Eleki-Ribbon. It appears that project was just the start of something pretty magnificent. Asaden has painstakingly recreated his version of the Ondes Martenot. Details follow.

Pictured here is an image of two new Ondomos and an original Ondes Martenot (center) via Adrien. Note the wood on them is much darker than the one pictured below from the Asaden website. According to Adrien, Asaden did an initial run of 100 Ondomos.

The following are some details, Google translated from Japanese, via Asaden (forgive the translation):

"Ondomo - Legacy Of Love

More than 15 years, continues to study the Ondes Martenot, it can be more easily available, it is even more portable also easy, anywhere play as, from Japan made from the feeling that new Ondes Martenot.

Once the Ondes Martenot easy Mochiaruke ... Ondomo that has been produced in such a thought (Ondomo) has packed the hopes and dreams in only 64 cm of width.

If even plug it into an electrical outlet, because it is equipped with a built-in speaker, you can play anywhere at any time.

Instrument called Ondes Martenot, and Ondes Martenot unique sound is hoping the producer that the more spread in the world."

"1928, is an electronic musical instrument was born in France. Announcement initially referred to as the (meaning of the Buddha 'musical waves of Martenot') 'Ondes Martenot musical-Ondes Musicales Martenot', it will be later referred to as the 'Ondes Martenot' or simply 'Temperature ondes'."

"Morris Martenot (Maurice Martenot, 1898.10.14 - 1980.10.08) represents a musical talent from early childhood, early on cello, piano, musician learned the basics of music, also deeply involved with music education and thought, in his later years Mesodo of relaxation is also established. On the other hand, there is a deep knowledge in electronic and mechanical engineering, in the First World War in prison as a communication soldier. Ondes Martenot The impetus of production is, where you start from the sound clear the triode vacuum tube was in the ear. Repeat the research and trial along with the end of the war, Paris in 1928, it announced the musical instrument in the Opera, and caused a sensation. Then, playing to countries with Ginette Ginette of the Ondes Martenot player sister trip, in 1931 we came to Japan in Japan. Ondes Martenot for the Morris, and the desire of as a musician to continue to seek a sound of its own, desire as a thinker to practice the human way and way of life are fused, will he had a life's work would live ish myself. 1980, continue to seek the sound of his own until his death in an accident, improvement until the end instrument was overlaid."

"And a body part to play, set in a variety of speakers (Buddha di Few Suhl Diffuseur). Its kind, there is a regular speaker and similar principal principal, resonance resonnances to create a reverberation by spring, a built-in gong characteristic resonance of metallic metallique, Palm palme to leave a sound strings stretched wooden body. Ondes Martenot, the electricity, but it is often placed in the category of an electronic musical instrument for a musical instrument to be used, pitch, expression, the tone, in the player's hand, an instrument that can be intuitive to play with the feelings of the place some reason, there is a feature close to the acoustic instrument."

Soniccouture Ondes Martenot

"Perhaps one of the most enigmatic musical instruments of all time, The Ondes Martenot ( literally ‘Martenot Waves’) was invented by Maurice Martenot in 1928. The original unreliable tube-based design was refined and later models remained in production until 1988. An interesting overview of the instrument can be seen on Youtube. [posted here]

"The Ondes Martenot has been used in many film scores first dating from 1931; Odna by Shostakovich, Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Ghostbusters (1984), A Passage to India (1984), through to present day movies such as Amélie (2001) and recently There Will Be Blood (2007) by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

THOMAS BLOCH RETURNS

Thomas Bloch is perhaps the most renowned Ondist in the world ; when great musicians and producers are inspired by the sound of the Ondes Martenot, it is often him they turn to. Radiohead, Tom Waits and Damon Albarn have all worked with him...

LE RUBAN - THE RING CONTROLLER
The most famous is the metal ring, which is worn on the finger of the right hand. The ring is not used when the keyboard is being played, like the ribbon controllers we are used to.

When the Ondes is switched to ‘ring mode’ (au ruban), the ring becomes the sole method of determining pitch ; a very skillful technique, particularly so when you consider that in order to produce any sound at all, you must simultaneously manipulate the clear, lozenge shaped device, known as the touche d’intensité..

LE TIROIR - THE CONTROL DRAWER
The touche d’intensité is a large button on the control drawer of the Ondes Martenot, and is pushed and tapped to produce the tone of the instrument ; in effect , it controls the volume envelope of the instrument. The touche d’intensité is controlled with the left hand while the player uses either the ring or the keyboard to produce the melody.

Next to the touche d’intensité are a series of switches and dials which control the oscillators and create the timbre of the note - as well as send levels to the three loudspeakers.."

The screens:
"Ondes Main Panel
* Send level faders for each of the Ondes Martenot speakers, + line out level
* Faders for each of the 7 oscillators + 'Tutti' switch
* ADSR envelope control ( optional, depending on Setup)
* Brightness control - switchable to 12db Filter with resonance
* Detune, Width and Saturation faders

Ondes Speaker Edit Panel
* Convolution modelling of each speaker
* Close, Far and Room stereo mic positions for each speaker
* 4 different original settings from D2 Spring reverb
* AMP and DECAY settings for each IR processor

Ondes Performance Setup
The Setup Panel is a custom scripted MIDI control matrix. Depending on your playing ability and available MIDI controllers, you can configure the Ondes instruments realtime control options in a number of different ways. See ' Ondes Performance Setup Demo ' video in the Video tab.

* Custom Glide ( Ring) Scripting - realtime control of portamento time
* Control pitch and volume independently using Aftertouch, XY pad or any MIDI cc
* 'Exclude Key ' function - emulate touche d’intensité
* Save User control setups and load to any preset

The Poly-Ondes
The Poly-Ondes is a bonus instrument: a polyphonic synth using the Ondes Martenot oscillators and speaker modelling : create fabulous vintage pad sounds with full LFO and filter modulation, detune all 7 oscillators and play them back through the speakers for an incredibly characterful sound. There are 50 Poly-Ondes presets showing the sound design possibilities."

Wavemakers - Documentary on the Ondes Martenot

"Wavemakers pursues the legacy of an electronic musical instrument as fragile as it is magical: the Ondes Martenot. The Martenot so sensitive, so expressive, that nearly a century after its invention, musicians, artisans and scientists are still trying to unravel its secrets. Among them are the inventor’s son, Jean-Louis Martenot, Suzanne Binet-Audet, the 'Jimi Hendrix of the Martenot', and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

Integrating vérité, never-before-seen archival material and an entrancing soundtrack, this feature documentary explores the origins and workings of the Martenot, and draws us inexorably into its spell. A modern-day story set against a historical background, Wavemakers is a journey into the very heart of the mystery of music.

With Wavemakers, Caroline Martel returns with the signature approach that turned her first feature doc about telephone operators into a 'non-stop visual and intellectual stimulation… an enormously creative documentary.' (Variety). She pursues her fascination with culture and technology, using her distinctive blend of humanism, lyricism and experimentation."

via http://artifactproductions.ca/lechantdesondes/wavemakers-the-film/?lang=en

"A CHORAL FILM ON THE MYSTERY OF AN INSTRUMENT

Maurice Martenot dreamed of sound springing from silence. Amid the chaos of the Great War, the young French wireless telegraph operator became enthralled by the unusual interference produced by his radio’s vacuum tubes. He envisioned of an instrument that would turn the raw material of electricity into music, while allowing for the complete control of the performer: the Ondes musicales Martenot. Inspired by an ideal of human and live artistic expression, his electronic instrument is of such extraordinary sensitivity that nearly a century after its invention, musicians, artisans and scientists are still trying to unravel its secrets.

With an extremely wide spectrum of timbres able to evoke sounds ranging from the human voice to wind instruments, to the hum of a machine, the Martenot’s expressive capabilities are unequalled by any other electronic instrument. But what became of it? Since its introduction at the Paris Opera in 1928, it has been widely used in both classical and popular repertoires. From the first sound films of Abel Gance and Fritz Lang, to Hollywood classics, science-fiction TV series, and recent productions such as There Will Be Blood, the Martenot has also lent a distinctive colour to the music of Olivier Messiaen, Tristan Murail, Édith Piaf and Radiohead. Yet, while it has been part of the collective unconscious of entire generations, it is practically invisible today. After the accidental death of Maurice Martenot in 1980, the Martenot workshop gradually ceased production, leaving the instrument’s future up in the air. Of the 281 Martenots that were built, only about 70 remain, and the instrument is now threatened with extinction.

With its modern-day plot set against a historical background, Wavemakers pursues the uncompleted dream of the visionary man that was Maurice Martenot (1898–1980). This feature documentary follows an ensemble of Martenot aficionados, in France and Quebec, who search through studios, basements, science labs, and workshops to unravel the secrets of the instrument. Among them is Jean-Louis Martenot, striving to keep his father’s musical and pedagogical legacy alive. Suzanne Binet-Audet, the “Jimi Hendrix of the Martenot,” who meets backstage with Jonny Greenwood. A well-known member of the band Radiohead, Greenwood is a multi-instrumentalist and composer leading a new generation of musicians who are rediscovering the Martenot. Jeanloup Dierstein, an electronic instrument maker in Paris’ 17th arrondissement, is working on a new Martenot prototype, and, like its inventor, “dreams of it day and night.” Dierstein allows us to be the timely witnesses of the rebirth of one of the 20th century’s major musical innovations."

Messiaen, Oliver - Oraison (1937)

YouTube via bajistarojo. follow-up to this post. NOTE the image actually is not the Ondes Martenot, you can click on the label below for prior posts including videos and images.

Video description:
"Written for the early electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot (above), Olivier Messiaen's "Oriason" is a beautifully mellow and plaintive piece of music. The Ondes Martenot is a close relation of the theremin, and like the theremin was frequently used (and abused) on sci-fi film and tv soundtracks throughout the 40's, 50's and 60's, but also gained a foothold in many "serious" orchestras. I first heard "Oriason" on the box set "Ohm;The Early Gurus of Electronic Music", as recorded by Ensemble d'Ondes de Montreal.
(From "Thespoiledmetropolis.blogspot.com")."

via Richard Lainhart on AH regarding the Ondes Martenot:
"The whole instrument is monophonic, with one sound engine for both controllers (in other words, you can't play both at once.) The Ondes was the first electronic instrument with a direct vibrato keyboard that I know of - as you can see in the video, the whole keybed shifts laterally slightly when he vibrates his hand.

Messiaen is one of my favorite composers, and he wrote a lot of music for the Ondes. There are a series of "Feuillet Inedit" works for Ondes and piano, of which the video is one, that are quite lovely, and he also wrote a suite of pieces for 6 Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belle Eaux" that is just stunning. One of the works from that suite, "Oraison", is not only possibly the first piece of purely electronic music intended for performance, but also (IMO) one of the most beautiful pieces of electronic music ever. (I'm working on a transcription of that piece for Continuum and Buchla.)

The instrument shown in the image isn't an Ondes, though."

Ginette - DIY instrument based on the ondes Martenot

YouTube Uploaded by pemakini on May 8, 2011

"I designed and built this instrument during 2010-2011. The idea is based on the ondes Martenot that was invented by Maurice Martenot in 1928. My instrument is named 'Ginette' after Ginette Martenot - an ondist and the sister of Maurice Martenot. She played ondes Martenot at the premiere of Olivier Messiaen's Turangalîla-Symphonie.

The heart of the instrument is a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that produces the sound. I found great VCO design from Music From Outer Space -website. The VCO produces four waveforms or timbres - sine, triangle, ramp and square - which can be selected on the panel. The range of the fingerboard is four octaves and on the panel there is an octave selection knob, so the total pitch range is nine octaves. In practice the tracking isn't so accurate in very high and low registers. There are connectors for an external CV and a gate, so the instrument can also be controlled using external device like a keyboard or a sequencer, which both are my future DIY projects. I am going to improve the instrument by adding a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA). This would fix the problem with the volume control button that leaks some signal when it's supposed to be mute.

The background noise in the video is due to the tube amplifier.

"A short snippet of a recent rehearsal of 'le cygne' by C. Saint-Saëns. This piece is an extract from 'le carnaval des animaux', originally written for piano and cello, here it is for piano and ondes Martenot. Maurice Martenot, inventor of the ondes Martenot, played this piece in Abel Gance's 1931 film 'la fin du monde'.

Unlike our previous practice videos, the audio and video are synchronous! There was only one camera involved, so the audio and video may not line up 100% of the time.

Therevox Ondes VCO eurorack module

video upload by NOISEBUG

https://www.noisebug.net/products/the...

"ONDES VCO

The Ondes VCO is a eurorack compatible re-creation of the original 7th generation Ondes Martenot oscillator with several improvements and additional synth-friendly features.

A RARE LEGEND RE-IMAGINED
The Ondes Martenot is one of the first electronic musical instruments, originally designed in 1928 by cellist and wartime radio telegrapher Maurice Martenot. In the 52 years that followed, the instrument was in continous development. By 1975 the vacuum tubes were replaced by solid state electronics allowing for many new and unique timbral combinations. We have revived these sounds from original schematics provided by and with guidance from Jean Landry, who was responsible for repairing many Ondes Martenot in Canada.

From the original discrete triangle core oscillator to the specialized wave shapers and mixing circuits, these sounds are now available for modular synthesis. The layout and function of each switch has been preserved to make this oscillator an ideal performance tool, and three independent switchable outputs can be used to patch unique destinations in the spirit of the Ondes Martenot's selectable Diffuseurs.

IMPROVED AND EXTENDED
Our Ondes VCO uses a temperature correcting pitch circuit, precision components, and also makes several improvements that increase stability over variations in voltage and temperature. For interfacing with the synth world, we have added a 1V/OCT pitch input, four position octave switch and three buffered outputs. We have also added two high-quality internal VCAs giving CV control over Octaviant (8) and Gambe (G) waveforms with illuminated level indication.

Silkscreened aluminum front panels are available in four different colours and combinations of industrial powder-coating and bead-blasted anodizing. All units go through final inspection and calibration by Therevox in Canada.

"Petites Ondes is the world's first iPad application that reproduce the classical electronic musical instrument Ondes Martenot. You can play it casually during a break for coffee.

Features:
1. Touche (for dynamics control)
2. Playing with keyboard (Clavier)
3. Playing with ring (Bague)
4. Keyboard vibrating
5. Manual vibrato (using accelerometer)
4. timbres select (8, N, C, O, g, G)
5. trill buttons (minor 2nd, major 3rd, and 5th with just intonation)
6. Reverb effect
7. Pitch correction function
8. Help function

For expressive playing, put iPad on your knee is recommended!

Ondes Martenot can play single tone. Right hand: to control the pitch. Left hand: to control dynamics. To produce a sound, you have to touch the "touche"(for control dynamics). But, you can control dynamics as if touch a pressure sensor. This is a method to simulate real "touche". Let's try it with help function is ON."

Oraison

YouTube via rlainhart
"Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009.

From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery.

"Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music.

"Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you."

The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you.

Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009."

"For those who may be wondering about the name, Ondes is French for "waves." But if you know a little something about the history of electronic music, you might also recognize the word. The Ondes Martenot is an early electronic instrument with a sound not dissimilar to that of the more widely known Theremin. Unlike the Theremin, which is played by moving your hands in space, the Ondes Martenot has a keyboard and a sliding ring which allows the player to glide between pitches. Below each key is a little indentation for the finger to stop on. These indentations allow for precise pitch intonation, something that is neary impossible to acheive on the Theremin. (Unless, of course, your name is Clara Rockmore). Because several 20th century composers (notably Olivier Messiaen) composed for the instrument, the Ondes Martenot is still taught in some music conservatories to this day, though it's a bit expensive to get a hold of one yourself. You might also have seen Jonny Greenwood performing one in Radiohead.

So, Ondes is our little homage to this very cool instrument. But it's not a "virtual Ondes Martenot." We've taken the original instrument as our inspiration, re-conceived it for touch screen, and added some great features that make Ondes an expressive and fun instrument of its own time and place."

The Tannerin and Theremin Like Devices

It is a common misconception that the instrument used in the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" was a theremin. It instead was an electro-theremin, a theremin like device with a keyboard. It was built by Paul Tanner in the late 1950s.

Paul playing the final version of the electro-theremin.

The Tannerin is a similar device recently built by Tom Polk for the Brian Wilson Tour.

Via Francois Dion on AH:

"That's definitely a very very crude martenot keyboard. Looks like one of the 1926 early revisions of the Martenot keyboard. Missing all the tonal and expression parts as found in the "drawer" on the later martenot. Missing also the floating keyboard (for the vibrato), and the references for the slider.

It is interesting to note that by 1931, there were at least 4 commercial instruments with heterodyne oscillators:

1- the theremin
2- the Ondes Martenot
3- Clavier a Lampe (Armand Givelet)

##### Update: The 4- Trautonium (Franz Trauntwein) did not use a heterodyne Oscillator. See comments link below. Also neither did the Tannerin according to another thread.

(The Audion Piano was never available commercially)."

The Ondes Martenot (it had a ring device on a string that scaled the entire range of the keyboard).

The Trautonium:

I couldn't find a picture of the Clavier a Lampe and we all know what a theremin looks like right? : )

Also check out the Theremax. Some good sound samples there as well.
