Soundlab 5-31-17

Published on May 31, 2017 Stexe

"Instruments: Moog-32(2X), electronic bagpipes"

The electronic bagpipes appear to be the original style from Ross Technologies.

"The Ross Technologies Original Style Electronic Bagpipes were the first Electronic Bagpipes to feature all-digital circuitry and the ability to play in different keys.

These pipes have a toggle style power switch and a rotary volume control, with built-in speaker.

A standard 3.5mm stereo jack is also fitted to enable the use of headphones for private listening.

These pipes are powered by one 9 Volt battery."

Below is a demo video from Missippi Mike.

Uploaded on Jul 23, 2011 Mississippi Mike

"The video is a review for the product I have bought, the Ross Electronic Bagpipe, by William Ross, of Ross Technologies. William Ross is a great guy and he designed and built the instrument himself. Ross, you got my endorsement. I'm extremely happy with the product, it's simply amazing. The shipping was faster than greased-up lightening, the price was more than affordable and seller communication was outstanding, friendly and professional. Again, I couldn't be happier to share my experience and recommend the product, which can be found right here:

http://www.ebay.com/...

If you're looking for electronic bagpipes, I wouldn't hesitate at all buying this model. And the song, well, you can hear and make your own conclusions, I think it sounds awesome and it actually surprised me and blew me away of how good it is, exceeding all my expectations. Ross Technologies have a fine product for an EXCELLENT PRICE!!! Before anybody asks me I don't get commission, I don't have anything to do with the company, neither any of my views represent that of the company, I'm just an extremely happy customer that felt the need to share the experience with other potential buyers. I hope I did the product some good justice, despite my crappy beginner playing, them good Ross folk take a lot of pride in making those wonderful instruments and they rightfully deserve a good review.

The tune is Scots Wha Ha'e e Wi' Wallace Bled (Scots) or Scots Who Have With Wallace Bled (English), commonly known as Scots Wha Hae.The song was played for Robert the Bruce's troops on their march to Bannockburn, where brave Scots whooped the hell out of invading English troops, securing Scottish Independence then. Robert Burns composed the lyrics and they are said to be Bruce's address to his men before the battle. A beautiful, patriotic and outstanding melody.

It's been about a year since I have made this video (this paragraph is being written in July 2012) and I thought it would be nice to let people that come here know that I'm still at it, this long journey of learning the Highland pipes. I still have my Ross electronic chanter, and use it regularly - usually when I don't have the chance to play the practice chanter, or to memorize notes. I receive tuition here and there, for free by the best piper in town, who happens to be a nice guy as well, and I have played my full set of bagpipes successfully - when he tuned them. I can't tune them for nothing by myself, hardest thing I ever heard! But someday I will learn the sweet spots, or die trying. I have read plenty on the art of tuning, and will just have to train my ears slowly to the sound of the drones, and it will come with time. I am on my fifth tune on the College of Piping tutor and my next movement to learn is the revered birl. Hopefully, I will get it done properly. I am as passionate of the bagpipes as I am of my banjo these days, and recently, I have been playing my chanter, and many times the goose (my drones or drone stocks corked, with the practice chanter on with a PC adapter), to get used to the breathing / squeezing. I have much fun with it and love learning. Someday, when I am good enough, I will upload a video of me playing the full pipes, but for now, getting good and learn how to tune them are my priorities! That's it for my little update. Oh, and since I got tuition after this video, I learned how to correctly do my throw on D, which was done incorrectly in the video there. That's why tuition is so important! Alright, y'all take care, thanks for stopping by.

Video proudly made in Scotland, July 23, 2011.

Tapadh leibh! Mar sin leat an-drĂ sta."

Ross Lamond Goike Inspired Eurorack Modular Case in Zebrano 9u 150HP

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Gorgeous Ross Lamond built Goike Inspired Eurorack Modular synth case with Doepfer PSU's. Purchased recently from Ross for my foray into Modular which sadly I can no longer do at this time - hence the sale. It's 9U and 150HP and is tilted the opposite way to a 'traditional' Goike style case with the longer curve to the bottom of the case. Solidly and beautifully built, if I didn't have to sell it - I wouldn't. There is a waiting list for Ross's
cases so if you're in the market for Modular then jump the queue!"

Podcast 292: Ross Healy (VICMOD)

Published on Sep 8, 2019 20Objects

"I think I've seen the handle VICMOD bouncing around the internet forever. I've also been listening to the music of Cray for a while, too. But only recently did I actually put 2 and 2 together to realize that this was the same person!

I've always like the Cray music for its breadth and honesty - it really sounded like a person's inner voice, rather than whatever a synth might naturally produce. And in talking with him, it is clear that this is his primary objective: heartfelt improvisation and sound design.

From his earliest work with a janky 486 computer to his current obsession with Omnisphere (with Buchla, Serge and Eurorack in-between), Ross has exercised almost any machine you can imagine. The result is a person that is looking to be surprised by his environment - and is constantly searching for those surprises.

After our chat, Ross was apparently spurred into digging into the archives, and has release the following for the listeners:

https://vicmodcray.bandcamp.com/album...

You can also check out the whole VICMOD label catalog here:

http://www.vicmod.net/

And, as Ross himself says, check out his work on discogs.com to dig into more of his past:

Sequential Circuits Prophet-5: Ross Kelly Fixes His MIDI Fix

YouTube via gearwire. follow-up to this post.
"Ross Kelly and I both look for a quick fix before applying a permanent fix. For example, the light bulb in my room went out, and I can't reach the fixture, so I've just been setting things on fire. Once my pile of ashes is high enough, I can just climb to the top of it and easily switch out the bulb.

Ross, on the other hand, is actually going to show you how he's going to switch out his temporary MIDI fix on his Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 for a permanent solution. See more on Gearwire.com."

Resonant - Featured Artist Series (Cray - Ross Healy)

Love the analogy to painting at the very end. It's an interesting concept - reproducing set tracks vs. exploration.

Aussie Babies Love the Jupiter 8

This one including title in via Ross. The title, of course, is in reference to this post. I thought the following blurb from Ross was pretty funny. Makes me wonder if I should have named my daughter Cynthia. : )

"It must be an Australian thing with babies and Jupiter 8s

My son OSCar( yes named after the synth, it was that or Roland
Oberheim), loves playing the Jupiter so much so he calls it Daddy, and
he doesnt call me daddy???:-)"

Thanks Ross. BTW, I thought of Roland Oberheim as well, but my wife killed that one pretty quickly, and we had a daughter, so...

Synthesizers.com Composition Contest Videos

Use the player controls on bottom to skip around.
You can find descriptions for each video below. You can find additional Synthesizers.com contest posts here.

Playlist:

1. O Z Hall: Zebra Synth
Dive into the enthralling world of synthesizers and witness O Z Hall's outstanding entry, "Zebra Synth", in the Synthesizers.com Composition Contest. Crafted with unparalleled precision and technique, this remarkable composition combines an array of captivating sounds that will take you on a breathtaking sonic journey.

Hall masterfully utilizes three distinctive patches in "Zebra Synth" to create an immersive soundscape. The first patch features a drone made using a Q106A oscillator, which is meticulously processed by a wave folder. Another oscillator, intertwined with linear FM from the wavefolder output, results in a fascinating "clang tone" that is beautifully amplified by a digital reverb.

In the second patch, a sequenced voice is artfully produced by employing two re-paneled Q106 oscillators. One output is channeled into the input of the linear FM, which subsequently provides intriguing timbral variations. The Q119A sequencer's 3rd row masterfully controls a Ratchet effect, adding even further depth to the composition. An expertly-applied digital delay effect enriches the output of this patch.

Lastly, the lead voice is ingeniously designed using the Q169 Dual Oscillator with Pulse Width modulation. O Z Hall skillfully manipulates the 24db/oct low pass filter in real-time to deliver an electrifying performance. The extended digital delay effect ties the entire sonic experience together.
O Z Hall's "Zebra Synth" draws its arsenal of modular synthesis tools from the Synthesizers.com catalog, including Q106, Q106A, Q119A, Q171, Q148, Q127, Q169, Q168, Q167, Q114, Q174, and Q175A modules. The creative process has been meticulously executed, showcasing how these modules can be combined to engineer a rich and dynamic sound adventure.

Dewanatron Featured in New York Times

The New York Times has an article on Dewanatron and the Swarmatron. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' use of the Swarmatron get a mention for their use of the Dewanatron in "The Social Network".

"It was something of a personal victory, too. 'It felt like the Swarmatron was the foundation on which they built a whole bunch of other musical stuff,' Mr. Dewan said, referring to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who together created the score."
