The Cure on Echo Des Bananas - Cold

YouTube via silong1976.

"1982-04-11 Best performance of this song I have ever seen"

I never realized the synths in this one reminded me a bit of Jean-Michel Jarre's Rendez-Vous. Some synth spotting: KORG Maxikorg 800DV, ?. Anyone recognize the bass pedals? They don't quite look like Moog Taurus pedals. What's under the Maxikorg. A bit OT, but does anyone else think the dude from the Twilight films looks like a young Robert Smith? I haven't seen them yet.

Update: some notes on the synths via Wid on the AH list:
"So here are the 3 main synths Matthieu Hartley used by 1980 :

- Korg Mini 700S.
- Roland SH-2.
- Roland RS-09 aka String Organ (late version with multicolored switches).

That's basically the sounds for "17 Seconds" : the Mini Korg was used to play the bass lines, the Roland SH-2 the higher register. Check out the video clip of "Play for Today". On stage, Hartley played the Mini 700S invariably, but switched between the 2 Rolands.

By then, Hartley was plugged in a Roland JC-120 amp. The SH-2 was dropped when Hartley left.

The RS-09 and Mini 700S were still used for "Faith" in 1981. Robert kept the RS-09 but added a Korg Maxi 800 DV to the rig. The intro of "Holy hour" was played with a RS-09, for example. "All cats are grey" and "The funeral party" were played with both RS-09 and Maxi 800 DV. The Korg Mini 700S was played by Simon Gallup on stage (for instance, on the intro of "A forest" and on "At night"). But this synth was not used after 1981, as far as I know.

Smith began adding some bass pedal synth too, by 1981 : in studio, some pictures clearly show a Moog Taurus. On stage their preference went to a far cheaper Eko K320 (played until 1982, for example on "Cold" by Simon Gallup).

The RS-09 was still used in 1982 : the synth heard on "One 100 years", played on stage by Lol Tolhurst. The Maxi 800 DV too (on "Cold" for the bass line, added to a - well I think, for this one I'm not 100 % sure, sorry - Korg Trident).

That's it for early early Cure synths. I really do not know if any of these synths are available on softwares such as Reason.

Hope the answer helps. ;-)

The Roland RS-09 - Forgettable Turkey or Forgotten Gem?

Published on Dec 5, 2019 Alex Ball

"The Roland Organ/Strings 09 (RS-09) was released in 1978 and then updated in 1980 or 1981.

It's a divide-down, paraphonic poly with sounds grouped into Organ I and II (with octave divider sliders) and Strings 8' and 4'.

There's a basic low-pass filter, an LFO (with delay, rate and depth), stereo ensemble with two speeds, envelope release control (with two modes) and a separate attack control on the strings only.

You can use the audio and gate out to run the RS-09 through another synth's filter with control of the filter envelope and you can also run external audio through the RS-09 to add stereo ensemble to it.

Whilst the Roland RS-505 from the same era now commands a high price (as do other 70s string synths), the RS-09 has remained at the cheap end of the analogue vintage synth market.

I wanted to find out if that was because it's crap or whether it's because it's been overlooked, partly for my own curiosity and partly because I often get asked about suggestions of more affordable vintage synths."

Roland RS-09 - deep demonstration and sound programming

Published on Apr 29, 2019 synthlegends

"The RS-09 is an analog string and organ synthesizer. The organ and string sections can be played simultaneously or individually. There are some nice features like vibrato ore envelope settings. Both sounds include an individual ensemble/chorus effect and an external sound input to use the RS-09 as an effect. You also can trigger external monosynths, like from the SH family through a gate output.

In this video I go through all functions and sound design capabilities of the RS-09. Finally I demonstrate the further features, like using the SH-9 ensemble effect for external gear and audio. You will be surprised listening, that the ensemble effect of the RS-9 sounds better than the legendary chorus. Only this feature is worth to get a RS-09. I really love this small synth. I was used from Simple Minds, The Cure, Duran Duran and many others.

Its a very underrated keyboard in my opinion. You can get it still for about 300 to 400 USD or EUR.

Thanks for watching this video again. I hope, it was helpful."

Roland RS-09

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"This auction is for a Roland RS-09 analog string synthesizer.

This is the later version of the RS-09 with the selector switches similar to the TR-808 / Jupiter-8 machines.
The RS-09 is capable of creating lush analog string and pad sounds with some programmability.

This RS-09 has been serviced and restored with new tact switches and slider caps. Everything works and sounds as it should, but there are some cosmetic issues.

*NOTE* The plastic end-pieces (cheeks) of the machine are damaged, with a large chunk of plastic missing from the front corner (see photos). This causes the front panel to be a little when lifting the machine. "

Roland RS-09 Strings/organ analog synth

via via this auction and this auction.
From the ROLAND RS-09 OWNERS MANUAL: "Roland RS 09 is a keyboard mechanism that produces the sound of the strings as well as the rich sound of the organ. Equipped with a 2-channel output and an ensemble capacity, you can create a deep and wide range sound with a stereo or PA system. And with the external input jack, you can add the ensemble effect to the sounds of various electronic and electric instruments. In connecting RS-09 to other synthesizers (SH-1) , you can get a similar effect to a polyphonic synthesizer"

See abertronix (RSS) for more.

The two designs of the Roland RS-09. The orange followed the black and white and was in line with the aesthetics of the TR-808 and Jupiter-8.

Roland SH-101 and RS-09 videos by Dovinia

Analog Impressions #006

"This sound sketch comprises an unusually somber Roland SH-101 and a roll of tape with a little stream and early morning bird song. The delay effect is provided by a Revox A77 tape machine."

Analog Impressions #004

"An abysmal , monotonous piece largely dominated by a wide array of Electro Harmonix effects. The synths used are a Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings and an SH-101 running through EHX Deluxe Memory Man, Polychorus, Frequency Analyzer, Deluxe Electric Mistress and Small Stone."

Roland SH 101 and RS 09 with Korg minipops SR 120

"Here's a little improvisation on my SH-101 and a newly arrived RS-09 and Korg minipops SR-120.
It's just a little piece to show you a complete, 100% analog setup which is relatively cheap and very compact. The SH-101 is running through a Deluxe Memory Man analog delay and the RS-09 is running through a Small Stone phaser."

ROLAND RS-09

via this auction
"The Rs-09 is really cool, it was Roland last string synth. This was offered on the market when the only other options for polyphonic analog synths were the expensive beast such as the Jupiter 8.
This small synth is still a serious contender for analog strings. Its chorus ensemble makes it sound lush, rich, heavenly! The chorus is available to the organ and string section as well as to the external input!!!

The Rs-09 was used by many artist in the 80s like The Cure and Cybotron.

The organ section has 4 drawbars and to combinable organ type, it also has its own seperate output.
The synth section (available simultaneously) has two combinable string sounds at 8' and 16'.

Both parts can be modified by the tone control and vibrato (with delay) can be added to add emotion to the sounds, this little vibrato feature makes for a very expressive isntrument.

The Rs-09 sounds great, looks great and is very portable, it's from the same family of isntruments as the Tr-808 and Sh-09 and shares the same sides and a similar design."

My beautiful vintage Roland RS-09 organ/string
synthesizer! So LUSH & SWEET! The ensemble
effect is AWESOME!!! This is a synth I had waited
for years for that always got away... until now!
It mostly works, it's missing the ATTACK slider
and cap... it has issues with the envelope I think.
Every time you change keys (unless holding one
or more keys down) the envelope re-triggers like
it was a mono synth! So it needs some repairs!
No Decay or Sustain on the keys unless holding
them down. If you know what may need to be
fixed on this little RS-09 please leave a comment
below! I want to restore this to it's fullest!!!
This still works great for what I need from it,
I would hold down more than one key anyway...
This is awesome for Ambient, Gothic, Synth-Pop...
No going to sell this one! It's a keeper for sure!!

ROLAND RS-09 - OXYGENE / JARRE sound with RS-09 + SMALL STONE

YouTube via AnalogAudio1
"If you want the OXYGENE / JARRE sound - and an Eminent 310 organ is to heavy, to big, to expensive for you - a Roland RS-09 "Organ / Strings" for example, can deliver a similar sound. Of course the sound is not 100% authentic like played with an Eminent, but it is a quite good compromise. On this video you hear a Roland RS-09, a Roland DEP-5 for delay and an Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Pedal."

1980s Roland RS-09 Vintage Analog Synthesizer Organ Strings 09 w/ Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"1980's Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings analog synthesizer in exceptional condition and in good working order. Just imported directly from Japan, this synth is near mint and complete with its original brown leather carrying case. The Roland RS-09 is a 44 key, fully polyphonic bi-timbral (organ and string) analog synthesizer, featuring tone control, chorus, and vibrato. The string sound and organ sounds are all analog and can be played simultaneously or individually. An ensemble/chorus effect adds depth to the sound and is derived from Roland's famous chorus effect. It's a very easy to use yet versatile synth with an oscillator section and 2-vco architecture."

Live from the subtractiveLAB - Episode 8

Published on Apr 7, 2015 Stephen Hummel

"The eighth video in the live, in-studio performance series from subtractiveLAD / Stephen Hummel.

This is a live ambient / deep-listening analogue synthesizer improvisation, performed over a drone patch that I created on the DSI Evolver.

I wanted to show how majestic the Roland RS-09 can be - I just love the sound of that synth... most of the soloing is on the RS-09. Noise/LFO sweeps are from the Korg Monotribe and the arpeggiator on the Arturia Minibrute is holding down the rhythmical stuff. The K2000 is being used as controller for the Evolver.

Synths featured:

Arturia Minibrute
DSI Evolver
Korg Monotribe
Roland RS-09

Hardware effects:

Line 6 Verbzilla
Boss / Roland Space Echo RE-20
EHX Pog
Boss Phase Shifter PH-3
Korg Mini Kaoss Pad"

Roland RS-09 Organ / String Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Roland RS-09 in great working condition with some minor cosmetic wear. Paint is chipped here and there and the "tone" slider cap is unoriginal. *Please note, the right side panel has three plugged holes. This side panel is from a ex midi-modded Roland TR-808, there are no circuit modifications to this synthesizer.

The RS-09 is an analog string and organ synthesizer. The string sound and organ sounds are nice, fatty analog sounds. The organ and string sections can be played simultaneously or individually. An ensemble/chorus effect and external sound input are welcome features. A simple 2-vco architecture, hard to make this synth sound bad!"

Korg MS-20m / KR-55 and Roland RS-09 demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Jun 29, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"In this demo I am using a Korg KR-55 for drums which is also sending a sync pulse to a Korg SQ-1. The SQ-1 is then sending a pulse to trigger the sequencer in the Roland SH-101 (which is doing the bass line) and an additional pulse to the trigger in on the MS-20m. A Roland RS-09 is being played manually and the audio from the synth is sent through the filters of the MS-20m. There is a bit of delay effect on the MS-2m/RS-09 (the Boss DM-2w analog delay). All instruments were mixed on a Roland M-16E mixer and recorded with a Roland Super UA audio interface."

Roland RS-09 MKII string and organ synth

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++@allrounderplus135
SYNTH IS FOR SALE: https://www.ebay.com/itm/305343063515
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Quick impro and functionnal demo of the underated Roland RS-09 MK2 polyphonic synthesizer. The Roland CR78 is mainly here to gather your attention :-)

Sure it would not be my first choice, and even not my third, when it comes to string synth but the RS-09 has some tricks up it sleeve that makes it worthy of interest. The main one is it's ensemble FX which is a 4 BBD stereo chorus with 2 modes. It's give a very rich sound, especially since it's stereo, and keeping with Roland's tradition of ensemble FX, it sounds quite different than your typical string synth triple chorus.

Next best thing is there is an audio input so you can run your favorite synth through the ensemble FX (and through the filter). Works very well with analog polysynth's pads.

The organ section on its own is not very interesting if you compare it to an actual organ. It lacks the percussive attack and bite of combo organs for instance. But if you consider this section as a way to build harmonic pads it can sound very sweet. And of course you can route it to the ensemble FX which dramatically changes things. Last but not least of its quality is its dimensions and weight !"

via this auction

"Analog polyphonic (paraphonic) poly synth with organ and string sounds.

It has a very nice sounding stereo ensemble fx, based on 4x Panasonic MN3004 BBD chipsets, just like in the VP-330 or the Jupiter 4 (which only has 2 of those). And most importabtly it has an audio input so you can run any source through this great stereo chorus. The audio input even goes through the filter ("tone"). Another very nice feature is its weight and dimensions ! You won't find many strign synth and/or organ you can carry so easily around.

Unit was serviced and is in full working order. The organ "ensemble" switch can be a bit temperemental but nothing major.

Cosmetic it has many scuffs and doesnot look so nice so that's why you can grab it for cheap. "

Roland SH-101 / RS-09 and Boss DR-55 Demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Apr 26, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"In this video the Roland SH-101 is doing a sequenced bassline (which was programmed via the SH-101's internal sequencer), the Boss DR-55 the drums (also sending a sync trigger to the SH-101 so it stays in time) and the RS-09 the strings/organ. I used a Boss DM-2w analog delay on the SH-101 rather briefly and on the RS-09 through-out the video. It was mixed on the Roland M-16E with minimal EQ and the master stereo signal was finally sent to my Roland SuperUA audio interface (jesus, I have a lot of Roland stuff all of a sudden)."
