SK50D Yamaha Multi Synth

via this auction

"According to the Owner's Manual… The SK50D is basically composed of six sections: upper and lower organ, poly-synth, strings, bass, and solo synthesizer. Each of these sections can function as a completely independent instrument, or they can be combined and mixed to any desired degree of balance to create ensemble effects.

According to SK50D Users... It has got a [Hammond-like] 9 drawbar organ, monophonic bass synth ; a woofer killer bass with sine 3 oscillators . It has got a monophonic solo synth that can be layered with the bass synth for even more power (and it responds to aftertouch!). There is a fully programmable 7 note polyphonic analog synth with VC LPF and resonance and it has three presets, and a 7 note polyphonic analog string synth It is a very rare instrument. Very playable with lovely key action...

Each section has separate outputs, plus there's a mixed output, and a headphone output. There's even a direct Leslie tone cabinet connection that makes for a truly unbelievable combination (see the video links below)! [at the auction or see this post and this post]

Here's a link to the Owner's Manual. Here's a band [natural sympathy orchestra] that uses the SK50D extensively in performance [bottom pic]"

Subtle Differences of the Yamaha SK50D

Yamaha SK50D - Seeing Double...

YouTube Uploaded by radlers on Feb 22, 2012

"I recently acquired a second Yamaha SK50D in pretty much the same condition as my first one. The second unit is actually older than mine and has a serial number in the 300's. Mine is in the 2000's. The slider knob colours for Upper Organ and Solo Synth are reversed between the two, and mine has the carrying handles located in a different position than the older unit."

Yamaha SK50D 122 Key Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

"1980 Yamaha SK50D Analog Synthesizer
-122 key 2 tier synthesizer
-Built in Monosynth, Polysynth, Bass, Strings, and Organ
-Very good cosmetic condition, great working condition!
-Similar to ARP Quadra, Yamaha CS series, Yamaha GX series
-One of the rarest and hardest to find 80’s Yamaha synths

Here is the flagship of early 80’s Yamaha synthesizers. The SK50D is a multi-instrument analog synthesizer with built in effects. It features dozens of sliders, knobs, switches, and lights allowing the user to create an infinite amount of unique sounds. Its got a fully tweakable monosynth and fully tweaklable polysynth.

The monosynth features 1 VCO and the polysynth feature 2 VCO’s. It also features full ADSR as well as a Low Pass Filter. Built in effects include Glide, Portemento,Vibrato, Tremelo and Ensemble. It features independent jacks to each instrument which allows the user to customize and project each individual instrument to the users preference. It works great. The pots are clean and all switches engage. Besides a few small cosmetic blemishes, its in terrific condition. Its quite enormous, a bit larger than a CS-80 and tips the scale at over 100 lbs. Its one of the largest non-modular synths I have ever come across."

Yamaha SK30 SN 1322

"The SK30 has four sections that can be mixed together independently. Mono synth (also supported by after touch), Polysynth, Strings and Organ. Add to that the SK series unique 'ensemble' feature and you can create some quite fantastic and unique sounds.

The SK30 was next to top of the SK range, featuring the SK10, SK15, SK20, SK30 and SK50D. It has pretty much all the features of the SK50D with the exception of the separate bass control and second keyboard. As such it sits very nicely between the SK20, very popular in Japan since it had great performance and accessible pricing, and the SK50D which was a huge heavy monster with stunning performance and price!"

"Yamaha SK50D - is a Dual keyboard synthesizer. 100% analog

It is the rarest and best sounding of the SK series keyboard.

Sound is similar for the Yamaha CS-80

Almost perfect condition - you wont find a nicer SK50D

* Vibrato, Tremolo effects
* 7 Polyphonic
* Original Legs
* Original Travel Case
* Original Foot Pedal
* Calibrated Tuned
* Amazing condition

This Synth is heavy, local pick up is preferred.

SK-series are combo-keyboards with synthesizer, organ, brass and string sections.

This is the giant of the Yamaha SK ( symphonic keyboard) series of synths. A very heavy ,dual keyboard multi synth instrument with both preset and programmable sounds.

It has got a 9 drawbar organ, monophonic bass synth ; a woofer killer bass with sine 3 oscillators .
It has got a monophonic solo synth that can be layered with the bass synth for even more power and it responds to aftertouch!).

There is a fully programmable 7 note polyphonic analog synth with VC LPF and resonance and it has three presets, and a 7 note polyphonic analog string synth ( actually these are the same synths which can be layered without losing polyphony but the string synth is a preset player with three preset sounds. The three string presets are almost the same sounds playing one octave higher than each other).

The aftertouch can control filter, filter modulation and vibrato at the same time. The Synth surprisingly has got no pitch bender and that is the only downside of the huge beast.

Organ plays on both manuals. Mono synth usually plays at upper keyboard (can also double bass synth at the bottom keyboard) ,poly synth, string synth and bass plays at the bottom keyboard only. The sounds that play on the same keyboard can be layered without losing polyphony. What a beast!

It has got ensemble and tremolo effects with speed variation control separately on both keyboards and detune effect for the poly synth..

Separate audio outputs for each sound and an on board sound mixer .

It is a very rare instrument. Very playable with lovely key action and gigable in its own hardcase. Has no MIDI but has got CV and trigger IN/OUT. Also a leslie cabinet connector."

Yamaha SK50D - Leslie Controls

YouTube Uploaded by radlers on Dec 26, 2011

"Yamaha SK50D synthesizers have a Leslie speaker output on the back to work with 2-channel Leslie speakers, like the 815, 715, HL-722, HL-822 and HL-422 and 415 models. They're the last generation of the older 11-pin connector Leslie speaker company. The SK50D also has controls for both manuals so you can select which keyboards and sounds will use the leslie channel. This video gives and overview and demo of this function."

Midwinter Thaw - Improvisational Jam by Rob Adlers

YouTube via radlers | January 10, 2011 |

"OK, this one was inspired by TheSynthFreq, who's been posting a LOT of new tunes/jams on YouTube. Got inspired! Thanks! Back at ya! Background organ and bass - Yamaha SK50D. Drums - Logic Pro 8. Background sequence, Korg MS2000.
Soloing on AKAI AX60, Yamaha SK50D, Yamaha CS40M, Korg MS2000. The SK50D just sounds better with a Leslie speaker no? I think so."

"The Yamaha SK50D is a massive (in sound and scale) late 80's analogue combo synthesiser with 6 different sections. It comprises of 2 different hammond-esque organ sections (one per keyboard) with leslie output, a Monosynth section (with aftertouch & CV-Gate), Solina-esque string synth & polysynth sections, and a seperate organ bass section.

It features dual 61-key keyboards for playing all the sections (including using the lower register of the bottom keyboard for the organ bass section), if you can hunt down the elusive Yamaha BP-2 organ bass pedals, you can use them with the SK50D to play the organ bass synth that way too.

This synthesiser is in excellent condition for its age & sounds fantastic."

"This a rare monster synth released by Yamaha in 1980. There are too many impressive features to list in an eBay ad. This was the top of the Symphonic Keyboard line. If you'd like to see what it is capable of, there is excellent information as well as demonstrations at this site www.robadlers.com/tag/yamaha-sk50d/"

122 key 2 tier synthesizer/combo organ with built in Monosynth, Polysynth, Bass, Strings, and Organ each with their own individual volume control slider, so you can use the slider bars as a mixer to set the individual volume for each section. All sections have their own separate audio outs (though a single Mix out is also available). A great thing for live performances is the split keyboard mode. With this you can have, for example, a very nice, punchy bass sound from the synth section and a lead sound coming from the organ or solo sections.

Dual keyboard multi synth instrument with both preset and programmable sounds.

It has a 9 drawbar organ, monophonic bass synth; a woofer killer bass with sine 3 oscillators.

Seperate audio outputs for each sound and an on board sound mixer .

It is a very rare instrument. Very playable with lovely key action and gigable in its own hardcase. Has no MIDI but has got CV and trigger IN/OUT. Also a leslie cabinet connector."
