John Entwhistle's Steiner Parker EVI

Click here for shots pulled via this auction.

"Extremely rare 1970's STEINER-PARKER Wind Synthesis in superb condition, complete with controller, synth, footpedal and cables. Formerly the property of bass and brass legend, JOHN ENTWISTLE. Complete with original transit packing addressed to John!!!

As an instrument in its own right, this is a valuable collectors item. As a piece of history for WHO afficianados, this is unique!"
Update: some more info on the EVI via Mark Glinsky:
"For those unfamiliar with Nyle Steiner here is a short bio.

Nyle originally conceived of the concept of a brass-style electronic synthesizer in the 1960's. He began prototyping the concept in the early 70's and in 1975 Nyle completed his first playable electric valve instrument- the 'Steiner Horn'. A woodwind version was developed soon after. Around 1971, Nyle started working on this new idea. The prototype was finished about a year later, while it was not much to look at, it worked. The first production models were offered in 1975 with the rest of the Steiner-Parker product line. According to Mr. Steiner, around 200 were produced between 1975 and 1979. Most of them were sold to University electronic music departments and pop groups (one of the first systems was sold to Earth, Wind and Fire).

"I developed my own transducer using whatever- I tried a lot of things out. A lot of the main parts I had to build myself. The first one was just a switch. You blew and it turned on and off - just like pressing a key. Later I built a proportional transducer."

Controlling an Andromeda A6 with a Steiner EVI Breath Controller

Andromeda Filter driven through CV input by Steiner EVI

"Steiner EVI used as breath controller through CV to modulate Andromeda A6 filters. Multi tonguing and human voice growling near last half to show some exaggerated modulation and possibilities."

via Infrablue on electro-music.com:

"Some real time playing around with CV input using a Steiner EVI as a breath control source. Notes and pitch bend played on Andromeda's keyboard.

All the modulation of volume, tone and filters are done in real time with the breath control through CV input by normal blowing as well as humming with my own voice into the EVI, multi tonguing and pallet fluttering into the EVI. Sound its self is from the Andromeda VCO's etc.

A Yamaha BC can do this stuff as well but it would need to be converted to CV instead of midi.

The playing is a little clumsy and also exaggerated to show the modulation... For most of the patches here, I usually like less resonance on a melodic line but these demonstrate the CV quite well.

Near the last half the resonance and growling grow progressively more extreme for demonstration. There are about 4 different patches throughout.

I was up all night excitedly playing around with the CV input... glad I finally got around to trying it! So happy to finally get breath control going on an Andromeda!

And here are a few tracks from about 17 years ago with melodies done on that same EVI using it's own analog sound module to compare. (Initial flute sound is EVI playing VL70-m module in a duet with an analog EVI square wave.)

Steiner Parker EVI with Microcon

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Around only 200 were produced between 1975 and 1979, they were each hand made by Nyle Steiner himself. This is not the later and most "common" Crumar Italian version but the original US version. It sounds far more better and has much more sound options. The sound module which comes in this early version is the legendary original Steiner Parker Microcon analog synth.

These particular EVI trumpet and Microcon module have been bought years ago as new old stock from the original Steiner Parker French importer. They have never been used except for testing. They are in close to new condition. They show a few light scratches here and there. Both have just been fully tested. They work absolutely great together, delivering this incredible deep, rich and edgy sound everybody is looking for!

Also, the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box.

The EVI would also work nicely once interfaced with any analog synth, giving a fantastic control of the expression.

The auction includes:

- Steiner Parker Electronic Valve Instrument – More infos here

- Steiner Parker Microcon Synthesizer Expander Module – More infos here

- Original case with key

- Connection cables

- Operation manual showing patches for interfacing the EVI with Steiner Synthacon, Arp 2600, Arp AXXE, Minimoog, Oberheim synths...

Matt Traum EVI - “Overjoyed”

Published on Mar 26, 2018 Patchman Music

"Matt Traum (from Patchman Music) plays his vintage Steinerphone EVI (handmade by EVI / EWI inventor Nyle Steiner) that Matt personally customized. The very rare EVI is one of the very first EVIs of this body shape ever made by Steiner as he was working on an all-MIDI version of this instrument with this body design (which later became known as the "MIDI EVI"). But this EVI is not a MIDI type EVI. The electronics in it are 100% analog taken from an older 'Steinerphone' type EVI and transplanted by Steiner into this body. This EVI is plugged into the hand built Steinerphone "suitcase" synth made by Nyle Steiner (the yellow panel device you see in the lower right of the frame). This synth was made famous and was used extensively in recordings by Michael Brecker (including his epic 'In A Sentimental Mood' recording).

This is a great composition by the immensely talented Stevie Wonder. I feel this is one of his finest and most clever compositions with quite a sophisticated chord structure, melody, and lyrics.

Nyle Steiner EVI (Trumpet) and AKAI EWI 3020m Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

"If you are looking for one of these, then you will know much more about it than I do. As I understand it, Nyle Steiner is somewhat of a pioneer in the design of electronic synthesizers for valve instruments suitable for professional use. (You can google the "Nyle Steiner Homepage" or EVI instruments at "Synthmuseum" for more information.) We bought this in 1998, just after Nyle parted company with AKAI, as a birthday present for our father, a retired professional jazz trumpeter. He was not interested in learning about synthesizers, so it was set aside and never used. My brother had purchased the AKAI 3020 electronic wind instrument (EWI) and the 3020m analog sound module new and shipped them to Nyle in Los Angeles to convert the wind instrument to a valve instrument (EVI).

This sales includes the Steiner EVI and the Akai sound module, along with all cables and manuals. They will be shipped in the original AKAI boxes."

Nyle Steiner CONVERTED EVI

via this post on Patchman Music where you will find more wind controllers. via Evan

"Here is a very special item. This is an EXTREMELY RARE hand-converted EVI done by the inventor Nyle Steiner. The controller began life as an EWI and was custom converted by legendary EWI / EVI inventor Nyle Steiner into an EVI brass type controller. Steiner no longer offers this service so this is definitely a collectable EVI as well as an amazingly expressive instrument. Also included with this custom EVI is an Akai EWI3020m sound module in superb condition- it even still has the removable protective plastic sheet on the LCD! Since the EWI3020m module is true analog, it has a super-smooth, fat, and warm sound. This system is in great shape with just a small amount of dings and scratches from normal use. This EWI3020m module has been updated by adding a backup battery clip and a backup battery in the Patchman Music Wind Controller lab (www.patchmanmusic.com). This system has been professionally checked out by wind controller expert Matt Traum. The EWI3020m has excellent chord capabilities. It can trigger four-note user-programmable chords externally via MIDI. Internally, the EWI3020m has 2 REAL ANALOG oscillators, a REAL ANALOG filter with resonance, 2 fabulous FORMANT filters for more realistic solo string and woodwind sounds, a REAL VCA, an LFO, and 2 EGs per patch! The sound of this system is super-smooth and expressive and it is capable of exceptionally fat analog leads and basses. Click here to visit the Patchman Music EWI3020m soundbanks page and hear this module in action! Patchman Music offers two soundbanks for this unit and they are included with this package (a $90 value). 50 patches in the EWI3020m are permanent and 50 are user-editable. The EWI3020m has jacks for Line Out, External In, Headphone Out, Program Up and Down footswitches, MIDI IN, MIDI Out, and MIDI THRU. The External In jack allows you to control ANY synth or sampler with the EWI3020m's REAL ANALOG filter and VCA. This provides SUPER-FAST and SUPER SMOOTH RESPONSE since the modulation is via direct control voltage and not MIDI! There is also a front panel knob for adjusting the Ext In level. This unit responds so fast you can actually hum or growl into the mouthpiece to modulate the sound. The EWI3020m has extensive matrix modulation capabilities. This sale includes the converted EVI brass-style wind controller, the EWI3020m analog sound module with original box!, the special connecting cable, Patchman Music EWI3020m soundbanks Volumes 1 and 2 on floppy disk (a $90 value- specify PC or Mac format), and a copy of the printed EWI3020m manual."

EVI Steiner Steinerphone Valve Instrument

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"EVI Steiner Steinerphone Valve Instrument / EWI / E.V.I / Sax / Synth

This is a very rare and limited production Steinerphone in good shape (see photos)
Buyer only receives what is in the photo

Around 1984-1985, Nyle Steiner designs and produces by hand a very small number of EVI and EWI "Steinerphones" for top professionals.
The EVI Steinerphone (brass fingering version) built into a small attache case is the first model he makes.

After several woodwind players ask for one, he designs an EWI model as well. One of the most famous players to play it is Michael Brecker. He featured the EWI Steinerphone on several recordings both solo and with Steps Ahead and others. Check out the 1986 Steps Ahead "Live In Japan" DVD (ID5736ERDVD) for some amazing Steinerphone playing!

Some units were interfaced to a JL Cooper MIDI Wind Driver Box (heavily modded by Steiner) to provide MIDI OUT capabilities to drive additional MIDI synths.

I am not sure which model this one is..."

Mark & Nyle Steiner - NuEVI from Berglund Instruments - Day One

Published on May 31, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Nyle Steiner, virtuoso and inventor of the EVI, day one with the NuEVI. Video of his first in-person impressions, testing and lots of playing. Nyle has given his full blessing to this great instrument's creation and has assisted as an official consultant.

It was a special and legendary experience to recently deliver to Nyle his own NuEVI... which came all the way from the brilliant programmer/designer/musician, Johan Berglund in Sweden.

We talked, tested and explored, and playing the instrument was so engaging, we kept getting distracted and just enjoyed the music... so there is a lot to see and hear. The date was 5/23/2018.

Thank you, Steve Anderson for starting the 'Save the EVI' movement and to Johan Berglund for creating this amazing instrument... the NuEVI."

My 1st NuEVI Demo - Mark Steiner

Published on May 23, 2018 Mark Steiner

"Berglund Instruments NuEVI demo with built in midi rotator. All sounds are digial instruments in Logic. Analog and modular demo soon to come. Endless thanks to Nyle Steiner, Johan Berglund, Steve Anderson, James Ingenito, and Robo Sax. For updates and to be on the waiting list, please email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. Please help us keep the EVI from becoming extinct by telling your trumpet player friends... and why not... even tuba, euphonium, French horn... or anyone who just wants to play one of the most amazing instruments to recently emerge on Earth."

Trove of Nyle Steiner Documentation and Images Available via Analogue Realities

Analogue Realities wrote in to let us know they have made a trove of Nyle Steiner documentation and images available on dropbox via his site.

"Nyle has given me permission to share this with the general public. Please, please give credit to Nyle whenever you use this information. If you make money off of his genius and work, please consider sharing something with Nyle. He is one of the truly nice, gentle, humble, and generous people in this world.

The organization is not the greatest, but I’m sure you’ll have many happy hours trying to figure out why I put things where they are :) The archive is very big, more than 4.6 Gbytes so be sure you have room."

P.S. Analogue Realities remade the Steiner Synthasystem. See the Analogue Realites label for more.

Pictured left is Nyle Steiner holding his Steiner EVI. The image was also featured back in 2015 from Analogue Realities, on a documentary being made on Nyle Steiner (see this post for the completed film). I thought this would be a great image for a new post on a trove of his historical works.

The 1979 Steiner filter.

The filter was used by YuSynth (featured posts here) and made its way into Arturia synths starting with the Minibrute designed by Yvves Usson of YuSynth.

“Steiner’s Workshop”

"Steiner's Workshop" from Hounds & Wolves on Vimeo.

This one in via Arturo, via The Playlist.

"'Steiner´s Workshop' is a documentary portrait of a forgotten genius. Part mad scientist, part inscrutable musician, Nyle Steiner is a singular presence in the world of underground inventors.

Beginning as a trumpet player in the 1960s, Steiner's creativity led him to experiment with sounds and machines, developing a series of instruments, including the EVI or Electronic Valve Instrument, a brass-style electronic synthesizer. The EVI's haunting sound and Steiner's expert playing ability sparked the interest of Hollywood and filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola who invited him to be a part of the recording of Apocalypse Now's soundtrack. For more than 40 years Steiner has been working in his Utah workshop assembling, modulating, destroying and understanding anything he can get his hands on.

In 'Steiner´s Workshop' we get to know the man behind his unusual inventions by spending intimate moments with him and watching his curious mind at work."

Matt Traum - "Thinking Of Michael"

Published on Jan 13, 2013 PatchmanMusic·8 videos

"On this the 6th anniversary of the passing of the great Michael Brecker, I thought I would play a little improvised tribute dedicated to my friend and Sax/EWI icon- Michael Brecker. This is a little thing I was playing while thinking of him and what he did with the amazing Steiner EWI electronic wind instrument. He touched a LOT of people with his music and he was a wonderful human being too.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. This model was the first EWI that Brecker played and he took the instrument to amazing heights. This horn was hand made by the great wind controller inventor Nyle Steiner. It is an EWI (woodwind type controller)- but I have modified it internally so it fingers like an EVI (brass type controller). The horn plays incredibly well- it's the Stradivarius of wind controllers. It is hooked up to a companion synth system also designed by Steiner. In this system are two Crumar EVI synth modules and a Steiner "wood and glue" formant filter unit (which is not used in this video). Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into an intelligent harmony processor with reverb, chorus, and delay. Amplification is via two Yamaha MS60s speakers running is stereo.

A little trivia on this system you see in this video: This is the actual synth unit that Doug Norwine played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with Melissa Manchester when she performed "La Vie En Rose" (you should be able to watch it on youtube).

Lifeform Blues - Wobble Bar demo - Keyboard & EVI duet - Mark Steiner

Published on Jan 19, 2014 Mark Steiner·17 videos

"This prototype was inspired by the natural vibrato accessible on Nyle Steiner's EVI (wind syth). For years I have wished a similar expression could be done with a standard keyboard.

Adding natural, human controlled vibrato is the biggest benefit here, especially while keeping both hands on the keys, but you can also do some good bends and other things.

This expression bar is held firm between most standard key sized keyboards and a stand. You play it with your palm or wrist while still keeping fingers on the keys.

Though I often use breath control on keyboards and other things, on this keyboard solo I intentionally did it with no breath, to show how important the vibrato is as well. The dynamics are a very slow lfo on brightness/filter and an occasional mod wheel change. There's also velocity sensitivity but not much.

I eventually bring in an EVI part for a duet that really shows the similarity of vibrato on the two instruments, which are played quite differently, and thus bring very different expression and note structure/approach to synthesis."

Steiner Synthasystem Updates

Two new posts on Analogue Realities

V.C. Oscillator
Triple Envelope Generator

Interesting bits on graphic design: "Nyle sent me scans of the original artwork for the Frequency Divider panel which will help me get a better match with the panels I'm doing. For my stuff, I've always used Bulgarian for the module name and then a casual script like font for the pots, jacks, etc. Nyle likes a blockish, sans-serif font like he did originally, and I think he's right. I re-did the Triple Envelope Generator panel with pot tic marks, a Helvetica font slightly angled and used all caps for the letters, like Nyle did. I think it looks good."

One thing to consider is the historical relevance of this project. This is Nyle Steiner, maker of the Steiner-Parker Synthacon, Steiner EVI, and of course the Synthasystem, classic vintage analog synths from the mid 1970s. Realize this was before Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith came out with their classic synths. Many modular manufactures have filters based on his design. See the Steiner Parker label below for more.

Nyle Steiner is a major part of synth history and he is back.

Update via dingbre in the comments: "One quick comment on the graphics, the gray discs are not really part of the panel layout, but a check to make sure the knobs wouldn't cover the tic marks. I've chosen an Alco phenolic, 19 mm diameter knob. It's knurled, with an aluminum insert, and skirt. A slightly smaller version of the classic knobs Nyle used back then."

Mark Steiner - Time Travel Wind Synth Sound Collection (incl. the Nyle Steiner Historical Patches)

video upload by Mark Steiner

"For the Holiday season I'm offering my Time Travel Collection (license to all my sound collections future and past). And this will include the new Nyle Steiner Historical Sound Collection. Sounds he sampled himself and used in Hollywood movie sessions and more.

The first 10 orders will also get a sound named after them. Cool or silly but fun for sure!

Cost during the holidays starting now is $250.

I'll very soon have a full list up. But it includes 100 or more sounds for EVI-NER, Lyricon 1 and 2, Arturia SEM V plugin, Moog Model D for iPad, and more...

Also around 30 to 50 sounds for Anyma Phi, Moog Sirin, Arturia MatrixBrute and Respiro (both for plugin and iPad/iPhone app)... A few of my Respiro sounds will also be free to anyone. I may do up to 100 of those but at least 50.

I am also preparing and will ongoing make new sample sounds for Logic and MainStage ($30 application for Mac). These include per-note sample instrument made from analog synths, rare and exotic modules/modular synths, tube synthesis, samples from vintage EVI and EWI modules and all kinds of things.

I would note, the Anyma Phi just had an update and added more oscillator types including multi-dimensionally morphing wave table oscillators that are frosty and glassy and sound unreal. This is one of the most amazing and diverse sounding instruments and made for wind synths. I'm dying over the sounds I continue to discover within. So 100% something to get if you have a chance. Analog in it sounds soooooo good, and then so much unreal digital and physical modeling... all mixable to 3 independently expressive layers. It's a technology creature of wonder. ---fully unpaid testimonial/bought my own unit :)

Anyone who has already bought any of my sounds can upgrade to this bundle during the holidays for $150.

More info coming soon. More videos of new sounds including the Nyle samples (including his Rapping from the EVI Concerto, his own trumpet playing sample instrument, and his own exotic flute sound he carved.)

Most of these are all ready now, the rest will electronically ship by Thanksgiving.

A few parts of this seem a bit odd. At times I like to keep unexpected things from sessions in the videos as they are unusual, interesting, funny, or whatever. This one had a few things rarely caught organically... some gibberish Tourette's that I don't understand a few times (from my brain injury I'm still climbing back from). I thought I'd never share that but it felt right tonight. So it's just a little something that is organic and personal. I was also just pretty out of it in some ways from being up so late, I'm usually this... um... gone lol. Anyway, an interesting little journal entry in a way.

Thank you so much, sincerely,

Mark"

Marshall Allen and the Steiner EVI

via vgermuse: "photo from the NY Times of Marshall Allen, 85, at the Abrons Arts Center in NYC playing an early version of the Steiner EVI (all analog). The reviewer writes, "He also coaxed loopy frequencies from an electronic valve instrument, making use of a pitch-modulator knob; its timbre suggested a steelier, less vocal-sounding theremin." He is the focus of the Vision Festival happening this weekend in NYC." Update: here's a link to the article in the NY Times.

Note Marshall Allen played with Sun Ra in the Sun Ra Arkestra.

"Mr. Allen, who turned 85 last month, has been a member of the Arkestra for more than 50 years: he joined the ensemble almost at its origins, spearheading its reed section and faithfully minding the various edicts of its namesake leader. When he took the helm himself in the mid-1990s, after the deaths of Sun Ra and the tenor saxophonist John Gilmore, Mr. Allen set his sights on continuity. He has kept the band together and working, with one eye trained on the legacy of an expressly future-oriented music."

Alien Silent Night - Mark Steiner - Artemis & EVI

Published on Dec 23, 2014 Mark Steiner

"My arrangement of Silent Night. Filmed performances of a few unusual synths. The very incredible Sean Halley played acoustic guitar. I play a "Martenot" style synth with breath control and now light optics that I made called The Artemis. I also play Steiner EVI, a wind synth my uncle Nyle Steiner invented. And I play a toy school bus. I use an MRT Breath Controller with the Artemis and Alesis Andromeda."

This is actually the Steiner Microcon which paired with the Steiner EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument), however according to this post "the Microcon works perfectly alone, without the EVI connected. It could be easily included in a complex analog synth setup, adding the unique original Steiner Parker sound from its very compact but versatile box."

I'm not sure what voltage these work with so who knows how well these would track with modern modular gear.  If you know, feel free to comment.
