Tabla for the iPhone

"The Tabla (also known as Arabic drum, darkukkah, darbouka or dumbak) is a single-headed hand- drum found in most Arab music ensembles.

This application provides a Tabla with 5 different beat sounds, the "Doum" in the middle, and 4 different "Taks" in the four corners of the drum.

For best sound quality, connect your iPhone/iPod touch to external speakers or headphones.

You can play your iPod music in the background while using this application and accompany the song!"

You can find Tabla here:
Tabla

Update via Murray in the comments:
"1. That's not a picture of a tabla.
2. Tablas are not the same as darkukkahs, darboukas or dumbaks."

Note the image is the image in the iTunes store for Tabla as of this post.

electrotablajam 1

YouTube via behanger. via Ernst van der Loo.

electrotablajam 2

"My electronic tabla (it says "proffessional") controls my home built 32 step sequencer, of which 20 positions are used for this rhythm. The Sool rhythm has 10 beats per cycle.

The sequencer not only plays these voltages up or down, but it can also derive other patterns. I worked these out and implemented these in hardware. I would have to look up how I did this. I do not think of it anymore, as each of the patters is useful. So in a live situation, I just choose a different one at random.

The output of the sequencer is analog, and sends out 0-10 volt. This is then converted to midi by my new miduino, a circuit by Tom Scarff. The software was partley rewritten by me. to make it play in the key of my choice. Using a very secrative math trick called rounding, I made the sequencer play in a minor key, rather than in the 12 tone system. This allows for live tweaking of the knobs without ever being out of key. Freedom!

Then there's my Arcade joystick, which has an home baked circuit that converts the 4 switches and the fire button to 15 different notes, and connects right onto the keyboard matrix of an old casio childrens keyboard which cooks midi note messages. I would do this in the miduino too if I needed to do it again. A series of if/else statements is much easier and more flexible than soldering and debugging a circuit with 8 logic IC's and a over a meter of wire.

Then there's the large joystick. It has a doepfer midiconvertor on board. The miduino has enough pins to do it all together, but I like the fact that it is a funtional unit on it's own. It controls all the effects of the Arcade channel.

The pitch of the tabla can be controlled by the sequencer as well as by the Atari paddle. I made this input on the tabla when I replaced the tuning pot with a precise ten-turn pot. It works with two vactrols.

Sound sources are: cymbals, a Raagini shruti box, the tabla box, a Waldorf Blofeld running 2 patches amplified by a 40 year old Italian tube amp.

I recorded it with my photocamera, which has a rediculously low audio sampling rate. They all have. It's just not a number the camera's are sold by. I should have checked weather I was in the image myself. Now I am a pair of hands on youtube too, looking like the Lorax of Dr. Seuss. A well. It's just a test drive to check if my work is getting somewhere."

2010 Optigan Sitar & Tabla Disc - Teaser

YouTube via peahix | June 29, 2010 | 2:06

"Here's a little teaser for the soon to be released Optigan Sitar & Tabla disc (official title tbd). This is some footage from the recording session featuring Rama Douglas on sitar and Justin DeHart on tabla. The keyboard will feature a variety of different sitar riffs (and possibly some harmonium notes on part of the keyboard), the chord buttons will have 15 different tabla loops, and the SFX tabs will have tamboura drones and other effects. More details coming soon at optigan.com!

New 2010 Optigan Disc - SITAR

YouTube via optigandotcom | August 21, 2010

"New 2010 Optigan Disc - SITAR

Now available for pre-order at http://www.optigan.com/shoptigan/inde...

The original Optigan owner's manual tantalizingly lists "sitar" as one of it's many featured instruments, but in fact no sitar sounds ever appeared on either an Optigan disc or even the original studio master tapes. When we first started making new Optigan discs, "sitar" definitely made the short list, if only to rectify that situation.

The only question was- how to do it? Putting a straight-ahead sitar sound on the keyboard couldn't really work all that well, since it's not a sustaining sound, and we didn't want to do something like our Pianoscape disc with this one. We thought about doing a "raga rock" type disc, with sitar-laced riffs on the chord buttons and a more typical keyboard sound on the keys, but that didn't really get us fired up either.

So we decided to try a pseudo-traditional take. Since Indian classical music consists of melody and percussion accompanied by drone (ie no Western style chords or harmonic motion), we decided to put various drones on the SFX tabs, tabla loops on the chord buttons, and 37 different sitar riffs on the keys. Given the way the Optigan's sounds constantly loop in sync with each other, this allows for an endless recombination of sitar riffs. For instance, you can play the first half of one riff, then play a different key and get the 2nd half of another riff. The video shows clearly how this works.

This is NOT a traditional Optigan disc setup. You can't play your own tunes with this disc, rather it's sort of a "raga generator" of sorts.

Tabla Triggered DIY Sequencer Drummachine

Internals of my home made analog sequencer

YouTube via joystickmusic — April 11, 2010 — "This sequencer is triggered by a Riyaz "proffessional" (sic) tabla box."

Drummachine: proof of concept. No proper sounds assigned yet.

"joystickmusic — April 11, 2010 — This proves the machine works how I planned it. I can drum a beat, and the sequencer will store the sounds in the 32 positions of the sequencer. Closing the volume knob erases it. It can't do triplets (yet) as you can tell."

Foes dub: Setting up a sequence and a beat

"joystickmusic — April 16, 2010 — This is not the best Jam. It's too sluggish. But I found it nice to show off how easy it is to set up a sequence on a quantized sequencer and how easy it is to tap a beat."

Chins

"joystickmusic — April 22, 2010 — Same features as yesterday, same sequence, different sounds, different music.
BTW: There's no computer involved while playing this music. There's just the tabla machine, the sequencer and tw joysticks. A Miduino is digesting their data and plays a Waldorf Blofeld."

Luminous Trilogy & A CATALOGUE OF FM MATERIALS by Element433 ( a.k.a. Pere Villez)

via Element433 (Pere Villez)

"When I made the popular YouTube series 'FM Catalogue of Materials', many viewers commented that they would love to see some more of the 'music tech as cinema' style created in the videos.

My new project 'Luminous Trilogy' release, does exactly that. In part 1 'WTD', synths and synth technical diagrams, together with Pure Data/Max patches, become casual parts of the film's environment, which is set in an alt near future. Part 1 was realised with analogue modular, whereas Part 2 "Breath" was scored using binaural audio, VCV rack and live Indian tablas. Part 3 'Contrails' uses physical models, Samplicity's Berlin Studios and vintage FM hardware."

Update: Element433 has made the VCV patch and assets used in the film "Breath" below a free download. You can find instructions on downloading the patch and setting it up here: http://tinyurl.com/e433WpBrvcv.

Luminous Trilogy

"Three music shorts around the theme of light, from incandescent urban folklore set in the near future, electric neon glowing medussae to impossible skies, all to the sound of dark ambient and techno-world music"

Playlist:

Walking The Dulzaina - Luminous Trilogy - Part 1
Walking The Dulzaina is an edited one-shot music film which details the manic walkthrough time-lapse of an imaginary synthesised dulzaina (Spanish folkloric instrument) being taken for a walk through the "Las Vegas" like dressed streets of a small village festive celebration set somewhere in the near future.

The visuals are nods to the Bladerunner, Lynch, Weirdcore and Kubrick where the glow of transparent neon CRTs, display technical diagrams with a music technology theme. Some suddenly slide up from the ground, while others cross from one side of the street to another.

The music is inspired by minimalism, industrial techno synth-folk where Steve Reich and Techno meet Raymond Scott and 1960's BBC radiophonic.

Musical Equipment Detail:

Intro: Moog Subharmonicon through Fairfield Randy's Revenge ring modular - into two crunchy Elby Systems stereo valve preamps and out into a stereo pair of Doepfer A-199 spring tanks).

Dulzainas: Buchla Easel Command sometimes untreated and sometimes solo through a J.H. 'Son of a Storm Tide' stereo analogue studio flanger (built by Van Daal Electronics (second dulzainas and very low transition whoooses). Buchla and Subharmonicon sync locked and clock divided by Ornaments and Crime clock divider.

Final wormhole sequence: Subharmonicon through stereo A-199 Doepfer spring reverbs and Paulstretched.

This work is not sponsored by any the manufacturers mentioned. They are personally purchased pieces of equipment.

Holy Jhoomra Ganesh!
A Voltage Controlled Tabla!

Bill Sequeira suggested that we do this special project together, and after inching along on it in the background for many many months it's finally done!

THE PROTOTYPES

The TABLA

We circuit-bent an East Indian beat box used for percussion in classical Indian Music by adding Voltage Control Functions and logical inputs and outputs so it can interface with the rest of your modules and make beautiful music together!

Two dozen classical rhythmic cycles of percussion or "Taals" can be selected either manually or by patch cord. (click on the keypad for a close-up)

For example as Ravi Shankar at the Monterey Pop Festival explains an "Ek" type of taal is a cycle of 12 beats divided 4,4,2,2 A faster Ek Taal would be based on only six units and thus become 2,2,1,1.

This Cynthiafied Tablatron uses digitally sampled recordings of real acoustic Tablas and allows you to voltage control the pitch, tone, and tempo, as well as use logic signals to cycle through dozens of taals.

A row of Gate Outputs and LEDs light to the rhythmic pulsings of temples from lands far away..."
