"All the Demos feature one or two Oscs (Sine Wave mostly) into the Waveshaper or Ringmod independently and a set from the Ringmod into the Waveshaper and into the VCA for all sounds. I added a bit of reverb to the whole batch as well to give them space. I used LFO's, ENV's and a Theremin Controller to modulate mostly the Waveshaper's CV input. A few of these have audio going onto the CV of the Waveshaper or no input, creating a noise output that can be modulated by the CV input. The Ringmod has a Feedback switch that dirties it up quite a bit.

The Waveshaper does not have much explicit documentation, so experimentation is required to crack its code. Using an oscilloscope reveals the non-linear ways of the Waveshaper. A saw-tooth like ramp acquires a bottom end. Passing the same ramp through a VCF first then into the Waveshaper produces unexpected results.

For those who are familiar with the VST "Massive" synth, this module offers a meaty counterpart to Massive's "Formant" mode.

The Silent Way plug-in by Expert Sleepers can be hooked up for DAW control and Dubstep.

Tidal Quad Filter

"The specs up on Matrix synth seem like they include most of the info, but
I'll add a few bits that I like.

It's a quad filter, and each filter has 4 jacks associated with it, In, Out,
CV and ENV (Gate). The ENV input is obviously for triggering the associated
AR envelope with a gate instead of using the envelope follower or audio
triggering. The input jack is actually A TRS jack, with in /out/ and
ground, which I think lets you use it on some insert jacks with just a
stereo cable. Also, with nothing plugged into filter 2's audio in jack the
signal from filter 1's in gets routed to filter 2's input. This is mirrored
for filter 3 and 4 as well.

While there are 4 filters, there are 2 LFO's, so two filters share one LFO,
and each filter has a bi polar mod amount pot. Waves are Tri, Square and
Saw.

All filters self oscillate in all modes, although BP mode has a narrower
range of self oscillation.

The filters sound great, I use them quite a lot as they have pretty much
everything you need right there. The two modes of waveshaping are great,
I've mostly used them on percussion sounds, but they have a wide range and
what I find to be a big sweet spot.

One of my favorite things on this unit is the 'punch' switch. It makes the
envelope hit harder somehow. Now this unit is optimized for fast response
since using it with a 'drumcomputer' was understood to be a common
application, but the punch switch just adds a great smack to the sound. Add
that with the waveshaper engaged and it's just bananas.

The website formerly had some pics of 2 Quad units racked side by side,
giving you 8 filters in about 5 rack units, it was a pretty sight.

Build quality is very good, the unit is solid, the pots are firmly attached
and not the wobbly kind you see more and more.

The resonant filter might be the most important effect in popular music these days. However if you want to insert a filter on multiple channels of your mixer and also would like to have a lot of knobs and modulation possibilities, there was no real solution. That's why Tidal Music Electronics announces it's four channel desktop multimode filter. You can switch the four individual resonant filters between Lowpass, Bandpass and Highpass modus. Each filter can be modulated by an envelope follower, a LFO and an external CV. The envelope follower is specially designed to track percussive sounds without false triggering, a key feature when used with drumcomputers, grooveboxes or guitar.

Maximum Modulation
Each filterbank has 4 VCFs, 4 Waveshapers, 4 Envelopefollowers and 2 Low Frequency Oscillators (LFOs).
The filters are switchable between 3 modes, Lowpass, Bandpass and Highpass. The Low- and Bandpass are 24 dB and the Highpass is 12 dB/Oct.
The cutoff of each channel can be modulated by it's own Envelope follower which can be fed by a sidechain input or by the audiosignal itself. This option gives you the possibilities to create very funky filter-effects.
Each LFO modulates 2 channels and every channel has it's own depth controller which can be set positive or negative. This can be used to generate cool stereo effects.
The Waveshaper
The waveshaper is one of the components which give the filterbank it's unique sound. It actually is a wavefolder which "folds" the tops of the waveform back instead of clipping. This sounds a bit like an overdrive but also has some characteristics of Frequency Modulation.

To give you a better idea what the waveshaper actually does we'll illustrate what happens with a simple sine wave using different ratio settings for each of the two shaper modes.

SIGNOS is an incredibly versatile dual channel utility and waveshaper module for CV and audio processing in just 8HP.

Both X and Y channels feature a classic / unipolar VCA with separate normal and inverted outputs, a polarizer / four-quadrant multiplier / bipolar VCA, a -5V to +5V manual offset voltage that gets summed with their respective channel's bipolar VCA outputs and a red/green LED indicator for this output. The offset voltage can be used on its own if no input signal is present.

X and Y sums of their bipolar VCAs output + offset (X+offset and Y+offset) are then feeded to these logic and waveshaper circuits:

AND analog logic gate: outputs the minimum of X+offset and Y+offset.
OR analog logic gate: outputs the maximum of X+offset and Y+offset.
MOD waveshaper: represents the mathematical modulo operation as a CV modulator and waveshaper, with X+offset and Y+offset affecting different parts of this circuit.
SHIFT waveshaper: originally designed to pitch-shift sawtooth waves up an octave, it can also do interesting wave-mangling to all kinds of signals.

All of the above are just the module’s building blocks, only the tip of the iceberg of what SIGNOS can do. It naturally lends itself to feedback patching techniques within itself and/or other modules, complex waveshaping, external signal processing and more. The limits of what SIGNOS can do are completely up to you.

"The M25 is one of two Swiss Army Knife processors that, along with it's counterpart, the Model 26 Control Signal Processor, provides a bank of essential audio synthesis functions within a single module: a Manual Attenuator, a Waveshaper, a White/Pink analog Noise Source, a Dual-VC Linear VCA and a DC coupled Ring Modulator and Fuzz Distortion -- all under a single 10HP faceplate.

The functionality of the M25 is broken down into three sections:

1) Wave Attenuator / Waveshaper / Noise Generator
With it's Mode switch set to the right, the top section of the Model 25 provides an often overlooked audio synthesis function - Manual Attenuation of both audio and control signals. It's range travels from full attenuation (no signal), through unity gain to +6dB, so that signals can be amplified from their input level by a factor of 2.

With the Mode switch thrown to the left, the M25's diode-based Waveshaper is put into the signal path. The level pot at that point effects both the signal amplitude and the amount of folding. Along with the manual pot, the Waveshaper has a dedicated voltage control input.

WIth no input present in the Attenuator/Waveshaper, the output of the returns a manually-adjustable analog White Noise source. When the Mode switch is thrown to left , the White Noise is shaded Pink. There is also a dedicated unity gain noise output. .

2) Linear VCA
The center section of the M25 hosts a standard linear VCA. Unlike the M13, no filtering is applied to the signal path and both AC and DC sources may be gated. There are two control voltage inputs provided - the first will take the output from full attenuation to unity gain. The second VC input is preescaled for the velocity output of a midi to CV converter.

3) Ring Modulator
The bottom section of the M25 is a 1496-based balanced dual sideband four quadrant multiplier - a Ring Modulator. Boasting over 65dB of carrier suppression, it features a unique corss-modulation Feedback switch not found in other Ring Modulators that introduces harmonic content with minimal sidebanding.


Fuzz Distortion
By running the same signal through both the X and Y inputs of the M25 Ring Modulator and engaging the Feedback Switch, the output is fuzzed (in a very big way). Have a listen to sound sample 3 below."

First, Petti starts with a fully-built WaveShaper effect patch plugged into to the output of Thor (which is generating an unprocessed sine wave) with a series of real-time controls mapped to Combinator. When the WaveShaper is engaged, the unprocessed sound is transformed dramatically. Then, in a step by step process, Petti demystifies the method he used to create the effect patch and shows you how to build your own WaveShaper effect from scratch, utilizing with a blank combinator patch. At the end of the tutorial you should have a good grasp of how to Wave Shape (process, bend, twist, or modify) any incoming sound and make the lead elements in your tracks more effective and lively."

This is Waveshaper and Sub oscillator so we recorded a little fun with Shape I Range, but also when we add the oscillator to the Sub which dramatically strengthens the sound. Used on one VCO Minimod -Vintage Transistor Core VCO from AJH Synth.
This module is a 100% fully handmade and inspirational synthesizer from the '70s, it is the domain of Radical Frequencies which we appreciate very much."

"100% handmade through hole Waveshaper and Suboscillator in one module with discrete transistor core circuit.

The Radical Frequencies Waveshaper-Suboscillator is a two input wavefolderr with shape
and range controls that allow for timbre manipulation, in conjunction with the input amount on each channel.

The module is one big organic block of harmonic generation.

All controls are interconnected and have a great impact on the final out.

CV control if offered and controls the level of both audio inputs.

A sub oscillator circuit is included, offering switchable -1 and -2 octaves.


The square wave has an inverted output too.

"The Boss DR-110 is a cute little drum machine from the early 80s, the last analogue one made by Roland. 
The overall sound is very reminiscent to the much praised TR-808 and TR-606. The DR-110 will give you that classic, sought-after sound but with some slight difference and much character. 

Plasticid MkII takes this sample pack one step further, with 120 new samples gathered in 18 kits. This new version aims at coloration and expands the sonic palette of the DR-110, processing it using vintage hardware to shape it up nicely. The cymbals are spitting, the bassdrum is kicking, and the snare and claps tones ranging from dark to bright make each kit acting like a rebirth for the mighty DR-110! Great care has been taken about recording a semi open hat sample for even more expression.

"As you can see in the photo, this is the third unit produced. This unit is completely hand wired from point-to-point, and in EXCELLENT condition. This unit has an extra knob in the rear which is not mentioned in the owners manual, leading me to believe that this could possibly be an early prototype. The rear knob has an affect on the frequency of an oscillator, separate than the ones the L1 and L2 knobs control.

Metasonix has put its knowledge of tube circuitry to good use in the design of the TS-21. The unit is made up of three stages, each with its own tube: a preamp with a VCA, a pulse-width modulator (PWM), and an LFO-controlled waveshaper. Vacuum tubes are also used for the LFO and for powering additional circuits, giving you a total of five tubes in the device. Despite the tube count, however, the TS-21 has very low self-noise and gets only slightly warm to the touch.

Here's an interview with the one and only Serge synthesizer designer, Serge Tcherepnin! Interviews with Serge are few and far between - in fact we're only aware of one print interview, from the early '80s. As far as we know, this is the only filmed interview with Serge in existence. Serge was a friend and colleague of Morton Subotnick's; Mort is the one who hired Serge onto the staff at CalArts, where he developed his synthesizer system for students to build and use. We met Serge in Paris to film with Mort for our upcoming Subotnick documentary, and after much convincing, Serge finally agreed to also give us a solo interview for Waveshaper TV!"
