The Packrat

Just realized I haven't put up a Packrat post yet. Sheesh! If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. They are featured in Keyboard Magazine. Title link takes you to David C. Lovelace's website.

Update: Click here to see it full size. "Tribute to the late great Bob Moog."

A Nifty Keytar and the Packrat on Halloween

David C. Lovelace, creator of the Packrat just posted a comment on my wench post. He will be dressing up and donning this wicked beast of a keytar for Halloween tonight, a Korg RK100. Sweet!

Seiko DS-250

I was poking around the Packrat's Dave's Music site and stumbled onto this. Intersting piece. Title link takes you to Dave's story on this including a sample.

All bow to our Wench : )

Hey, she named the shot, not me. : ) The lovely Cikira. If you do not know who Cikira is you've been living in a cave, or... just check out her site. : ) She also runs SynthSights. We all bow to Cikira if we know what's good for us.

Title link takes you to a bigger shot. I see an XTk. : )

BTW, if you have any Halloween shots you want to share with of course, synths, send them my way, or feel free to put them up on SYNTHWIRE.

Happy Halloween!

Thought I'd put up a Happy Halloween post and shot of my favorite Halloween synth, the Waldorf XTk. Title link takes you to the old Waldorf XTk page saved before they went under. I remember sending Waldorf a glowing email when I received my XTk. They actually put it up under user comments on the site with only a few others. It was an amazing honor for me.

Happy Halloween! Sonic State Turns 10! Happy Birthday Guys!

Just got my Sonic State new letter and read this little bit:

"10 Years On
Coming up to our 10th year on-line I was feeling a little nostalgic and found a fun resource for seeing what was going on on the site 10 years ago today.
Take a trip down memory lane.."

Congrats Sonic State! I can't overstate what your site means to me. It's where it all really began for me. In 1986 I bought my first synth, an Oberheim Matrix-6. I saved for nearly a year and combined birthday and christmas presents with a lot of begging to get it. I went off to college, got a job and then realized, hmm... I wonder what's going on in the synth world nowadays. A friend talked me into getting a Prophecy at the time and getting back into synthesis. So, I started looking. I ran into a little site called Sonic State, which became home to me. I set up matrixsynth.com as my portal in October of '97 and put Sonic State on the top of the list. It has sat there unmoved since.

I also became active on the-gas-station and hung out on The Olde Oberheim Abbey with people I fondly remember like Steveo (still active), AdamT, Kitty, Consequence (now Moogulator of the great Sequencer.de) and of course the infamous B3Tech, and the seldomly seen Seldom Seen Slim. Man I miss his posts. If I remember correctly even some of the analog gurus like Mark Pulver and MC posted often.

Anyway, those were great times. Sonic State is still going strong and I wish them another successful 10 years. Happy Birthday and Happy Halloween! What a day for a birthday. : )

Vogelsheiss Outed

I've been randomly putting up some amazing demos by Vogelsheiss. Well, his treasure chest has just been outed on AH. Title link takes you there. The coolest thing about this is he lists the gear he used for each track. I really wish more artists did this in the synth community.

BTW, an easy way to get me to post your music is to do just that. If you have a track or more that uses a given synth or two, feel free to send it my way. As long as I'm not overwhelmed, I'll post it. Or... You can always sign up on SYNTHWIRE and post away yourself. : )

Pugix - New Modular Synth Site

Via AH. Title link takes you there. Enjoy.

"This is my MOTM-style synth, in the works since August of 2002. I started this monster after happening across the Synthesis Technology site of Paul Schreiber. Way back in the 1970's I became interested in modular synths. I had met a composer who was using a big studio Moog at SUNY Binghamton. He took me along and let me play with it. The concept of voltage control hit home and I've been fascinated ever since"

ISP Problems Again

So, my ISP, ACE-HOST.NET aka ACENET INC claims to be "Hacker Safe" and guarantees 99.99% uptime. Well, my site has gone down three times. My blog was suspended with no support other than I was eating up CPU time on the shared server it was on. I ended up moving my blog over here, to blogspot.com which has given me 100% uptime. Go Blogger!

I left all my old shots on my old blog to save space and because it would be really painful to move them over. Well, I ftp into my ISP and my freaking blog directory is EMPTY. All my old shots are gone! My old posts have red x's now instead of pictures. I contact support and they say my blog looks fine. My guess is they're looking here. I hope they see this. They also say I should keep my software up to date because of malicious scripts. Umm... I thought they were hacker safe.

So... If you see red x's on any old posts. My apologies. I'm off to upload my backup. These guys absolutely suck. Let's see what happens next. Every time they mess up one of my sites, I will be sure let you know.

JH Synth Site

I recently posted about the JH Synthi clone and the Matrix FX by JH. Well, I recently discovered his main synth site. I had no idea these two items were just the tip of his iceberg. Wow! Title link takes you to his site with a ton of other work he has done. Absolutely incredible. If I put up a post for each of his accomplishments, I'd probably have enough content for a month.

Sealed's synth site is quickly moving up my list. With the excellent sound samples and broad content it's becoming more and mroe valuable each day.

Buchla 200e Analog vs. Digital

Update. Some notes worth posting via the comments:

Rick: "correction the new 261e Osc uses digital sine generation with pure analogue waveshaping.. where as the 259e uses digital generation and waveshaping in the form of "non-linear digital waveshaping"... read about this process..no other manufacturer offers this. FYI the Buchla 500, 300, 400 and 700 all used digital Oscillators with analogue output stages as is done in the 200e.. this is nothing new for Don.. it dates back to the early 70's instruments. in most cases the ear cant precieve the difference between an analogue or digitally generated sine tone...mine can't anyway."

Orth: "Well, after reading the FAQ, maybe we should just say that the Buchla is beyond traditional definitions of analog v digital. I mean jeez, that monster is something else at that point. a/d/a/d/a/d/a/d/a/d/a "

There's been some interesting discussion on the Buchla 200e on AH, including it's high price tag. You can pick and chose modules, but the listed systems start at $9300 and go on up to $27,400. See for yourself. What I actually found most interesting is that the system is a digital and anlog hybrid with fully digital oscillators. Buchlas are considered to be the holy grail in the synthesizer world along with just a few select others. Their sound and flexibility are considered to be worth it's high price. What's interesting to me is that one of the most common arguments you hear in the analog vs. digital debate is how analog sounds warmer and somehow better than digital. Some even argue that DCOs, digitally controlled oscillators, aren't truly analog and do not sound as good as their counterpart VCOs, voltage controlled oscillators. Yet Buchla went with digital. It's interesting when you consider the quality and pricetag of a Buchla. The title link takes you to the 200e faq which explains why.

Airport 71 - The Buddy System

Via moogplayer on VSE. Great song showcasing the Roland VP-330 and Monomachine. Reminds me of an band I used to go see called The Dismemberment Plan. Great stuff.

"Song breakdown:

starts with VP330 human voice sounds + Monomachine

part2 gets into really lush strings + Monomachine bass line

part3 has vocoder all over it + Monomachine lead

all this with bass and real drums

and hey it was recorded in our garage!!!"

Akai S612 Sampler to AX60 Demo

Via Architecture on VSE. Finally get to hear what the combo can sound like.

The Akai AX60 has a 13 pin connector that could be used to feed in the audio of the Akai S612 sampler. You could sample whatever you wanted on the S612 and use it as an extra oscillator processed through the AX60. The S612 had it's own analog filter and LFO to process the sample as well.

Hartmann on Sonic State

Update: Some great comments in from Mike (thanks Mike):
"i can confirm this. Looks like hartmann is nearly bancrupt. The story
is that the manufacturer of the nuke controllers for the Mini neuron sold unauthorised a batch
of 600 Neuron Vs to two big german music retailers (Music store Koeln) offering the Vs for
149 Euros!. (List price 699 Euros)
hartman posted that these models are not supported and won't get neither support nor the important modelmaker software available only on registration. Hartmann took legal steps on the sales.- check the hartmann forum and KVR for more infos- You could argue what made the manufacturer sell the stuff on their own. However, the sad thing at the end is that
this incidents might have broken the neck of a very innovative company that has taken the risk of releasing highly innovative synthesizers . it made me very sad to read a lot of posts
of people getting this amazing technology for nearly nothing and still bitching about missing support! , spitting on hartmans grave in public. This sucks ass! On the other side many users offered hartmann their support in paying the difference to
the retailprice to support the companies existence or pay for future software updates. If they are really insolvent, I hope hartman find a strong and forward thinking partner whos buys the intellectual property and takes it
where it belongs: into a proper
21st century electronic instrument beyond the usual virtual-analog-substractive-additive-FM-granular-wavetasble. i played with the neuron for 2 hours at the Musikmesse 2004 and was exremly pleased with the bizarre spectrums you could get out of this beauty.
Not to mention the great futuristic design. Only the pricepoint really kept me from getting one, so i was more than thrilled when they released the Mini neuron offering this amazing technology for a sort of affordable price throwing even a controller into the Vst package.
Well, the software suffered from a few bugs and update policy wasn't really the best, but still i think it was more than worth the price if you are into experimental electronics seeking an out of the ordinary instrument & sonic playground with a different interface concept and a refreshing approach on(re)synthesis. I just love the idea being able to create a synthesis model out of any audio source and use this as a sort of oscilator model for further tweaking.
What makes this instrument very special is the realtime acces with the joystic and that very tiny movements sometimes break the entire spectrum of a sound leaving you totally stunned what is going on. this is real audio sex. So get one while they last..and support your local synth manufacturer!!!!!! in ten years they wil be worth tons of money when using them with your time frozen vintage XP VST 2 system using an open source tweaked Logic5 PC clone. ;-) .. and i will be with you then.

Best,
Mike "

Black Oberheim Dual Manual 8 Voice

Interesting update via the post by elcraigo, the owner of the black 8 Voice. Also be sure check out the post for a nice shot of a white one.

"Here's the scoop on mine:
The metal work screened in black was an experiment by Tom Oberhiem to see what the units looked like; he didn't like the look, which is why they were never sold this way.
From what I recall, there might be (2) two voice units and a four voice unit built in black. There was not a regular eight voice in black, as there was not enough parts to do both a dual manual and a regular. There are (4) white dual manual units. The one before mine went to Oscar Peterson. The others are Tito' Jackson, Peter Wolf, and other unit's owner I don't recall.
I'm the original owner of the black unit. I built it myself from parts purchased from Oberhiem directly. There was an employee purchase plan, where you could buy the part kits (all the pieces pulled from stock, and organized). It's been a while, but I think it was 1978, I do have all the paper work and original documentation, somewhere. It took me (2) years to build it in my spare time. It's built mostly stock, except the power supply, which I beefed up and located a little different. The dual manual unit takes a very long time to calibrate and tune; getting both keyboards and all the SEMS tracking together can be a challenge."

EDP Wasp & DIY Drum Synth - New Flickr Shots

EDP Wasp

DIY Drum Synth

Flypen - Draw your own keyboard and drums

Cool little computer on a pen. You can draw objects on anything and use it. Two things you can draw are a keyboard and a drum set. It has sampled sounds you can play for each. You can also draw a record button and start recording. To see it in action, click on the title link above and watch the intro. When the main kid says to click on more info below or to click on one of them for cool stuff, click on him and watch. Imagine synth manufactures releasing software for this. Picture a huge whiteboard and a dry erase marker, drawing modulars, step sequencers, anything. : ) Sent to me by Fernando Alves. Thanks Fernando!

Vacuum Tube Synthesis

I was reading this post on VSE and someone posted a few links to vacuum tube synths. Click here for an article on vacuum tube synthesis by none other than Eric Barbour, founder of probably the most widely known vacuum tube synth manufacturer, Metasonix. The article is a great read. I also found the following two sites on vacuum tube synthesis.

Yamaha CS50 Synth Shots

Title link takes you to some nice shots of the Yamaha CS50 from Heath who also has it up for sale in the Boston area. More below including a Polymoog up for sale as well.

For local pick up only:

--Yamaha CS-50: It's in excellent shape, tolex is great, Lid,
everything works great. -$450. This is less than I paid for it.

Pictures: http://www.heathfinnie.com/cs.htm

--Moog Polymoog 203A with stand and polypedal. - $450

I'd say 95% functional. Which is very high given the polymoog's
history ;) I don't want to sell it, but I need to make room asap.
Serial number is 3811.

It comes with the polypedal and original stand. It's in great cosmetic
condition. The only issues with it are a few keys sit a little higher
due to needing new bushings, but they all work. It also needs one
voice card as the last note on the synth does not work quite right.
All slider caps are present. Also the attack/keyboard dynamics need to
be calibrated, but it still works fine.

For pictures I'm going to link to my Craigslist ad:

http://boston.craigslist.org/msg/106650611.html

I need to sell these ASAP which is why I'm lowering the prices. If
you're interested in both I'd sell both together for $850. I'm really
looking to sell in the next day or two. Again these are too big to
ship.

It actually does happen?

Update: And it was for real. : ) The seller speaks via Music Thing.

Roland TB-303 sold with a buy it now for... $150. : ) Real or scam? You be the judge.

From the auction:
"This unit is the best bass player you will ever play with! Roland's computer controlled unit to add incredible bass lines to any song. Play bass lines on the unit separately, or midi link unit to your keyboard and control from there. This unit has keyboard type of front panel to literally program in the bass lines part by part. It has a 4 track section pattern group, write or play modes, wave form setting, midi patch bay. Setting include tuning, cutoff frequency, residence, envelope modulation, decay and accent. It has tempo and volume controls, time mode, tap control, headphone out, cv out, gate out, output and a 9 volt dc jack. Flawless, mint condition, in the original wrapping and box for 23 years! It comes with original owners manual and warranty registration card. It also incudes an instrument cable. Manufactured in Japan by the original Roland Company! MSRP $395.00"

Just a nice CMS Modular shot that came up in my random picture viewer.

More Minimi Madness

Minimi123, aka 123synthland, that is. Title link takes you to his hord of gear for sale. Sheesh. Hopefully he will still be around when I have that kind of cash to burn. The one good thing about premium priced dealer gear is you can usually be relatively sure you will get what you pay for. Now if I can only convince minimi to give me this Oberheim FVS for plugging his auctions... ; ) I'll be the first to let you know if it ever happens.

Moog Song Producer

Update: Interesting comment in from Bohus Blahut:
"These aren't actually rare at all. I've seen them on Ebay dozens of times. I think that I got mine for $30 a few years back. I haven't used it yet (know how that feels?), but it is an amazing package. The thing that wouod make it even more amazing is if Moog had ever come out with the device mentioned in the manual; an analog sound module. How hip would that be?"

That would be pretty hip. : )

--------------------
Interesting bit of gear up on the *bay. Title link takes you the auction pictures saved for posterity. I found this via the C64 Blog. Pretty interesting piece.

Notes from the auction:
A super-rare Moog Song Producer MIDI and Trigger interface for the Commodore 64, with sequencing and MIDI-processing software. The Moog Song Producer boasts:

· 1 MIDI in

· 1 MIDI thru

· 4 (!) MIDI outs

· 8 drum trigger outs

· 2 Footswitch ins

· 1 Clock/sync in

· 1 Clock/sync out

Wow! That means the Song Producer’s capable of interfacing your MIDI and pre-MIDI gear. What’s most amazing about this package, though, is that it’s mint in box. Just check out the photos. It comes complete, with:

· Song Producer hardware interface

· Connection cable (it plugs into the Commodore 64’s expansion port)

· Ring-bound manual with software disk

· Original warranty card

· Technical service information leaflet (includes schematic, picture of circuit-board layout and complete parts-list)

· Quick-start/introductory guide

· Service-locations poster/leaflet

· Original quality-control slip (yes, it passed!)

In its condition (immaculate), the Moog Song Producer simply makes a great piece of memorabilia (as one person said: “I cannot imagine anything with a higher coolness factor: Something for the Commodore 64 with the Moog logo.”), but I used it with its supplied software. Perhaps most excitingly, though, is the possibility that – with the detailed technical information included – a competent C64 programmer could use it to control the C64’s SID chip through MIDI, as it just runs on a stock Commodore with a stock interface (the cartridge – ‘expansion’ – port).

Accentor Tool 1

At first I thought this provided the accent along with the distortion, but I beleive it's only distortion. If anyone knows please feel free to comment. It is a damn good distortion I must say. Rumor has it was designed to specifically give that 303 sound. Title link takes you to more including video and samples.
