"i bought some unusual parts from chipsforbrains for my Roland TR-808. Just finished soldering them in. This is for the 808 crowd if they've never seen this. Programming blind & live. I had a delay and a tapco spring on the board (no compressors). Programmed w/one hand while the other held a Canon powershot camera in video mode with its own pinhole sound."

Programming Patterns on the Machinedrum

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"This is how you program patterns on both the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 and SPS-1UW. It so easy! This is an example of the realtime step-sequencing. Hit play, hit record, choose the drum, enter the desired sequence, change drum sound, enter desired sequence. Voila! Drum beats. Near the end you can see how you can "play" the patterns. Hold the desired bank button, hit the pattern, the beat automatically switches over to the next pattern when the measure is done. More tutorials on the way!"

Giorgio Moroder - From here to eternity (Video 1977)

YouTube via udolamentibis
"Disco dance...has been Italian. As Giorgio is...

Hansjörg "Giorgio" Moroder (born on April 26, 1940 in Ortisei, Italy)is an Italian record producer, songwriter and performer, whose groundbreaking work with synthesizers during the 1970s and 1980s was a significant influence on new wave, techno and electronic music in general. Particularly well known are Donna Summer's disco hits produced by Moroder, including "I Feel Love". Moroder is also the founder of the former Musicland Studios in Munich, which served as a recording home for artists ranging from Led Zeppelin and Queen to Elton John for much of the 1980s and 1990s.Moroder was one of the producers of "Love to Love You Baby" Donna Summer's 17 minute opus along with Pete Bellotte. Moroder also produced a number of electronic disco hits for The Three Degrees, two albums for Sparks, and a variety of others including Swedish-born Madleen Kane, Melissa Manchester, Debbie Harry and France Joli.
Often collaborating with lyricist Bellotte, Moroder scored a number of hits in his own name including "Son Of My Father" in 1972 and "From Here to Eternity" in 1977, and in the following year releasing "Chase", the theme from the film Midnight Express. All were hits in the UK. The full movie score for Midnight Express won him his first Academy Award for best film score in 1978. In 1979 Moroder released his album E=MC². Text on the album's cover stated that it was the "first electronic live-to-digital album." He also released three albums between 1977-1979 under the name Munich Machine. In 1984, Moroder worked with Philip Oakey, frontman of the popular synthpop group, The Human League, to make the album Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder. In 1986, Moroder collaborated with his protege Harold Faltermeyer (of "Axel F." fame) and lyricist Tom Whitlock to create the score for the popular film Top Gun (1986), with the most noteworthy hit being the Berlin classic, "Take My Breath Away", which went on to become a huge hit for the group. "Chase" was also used as an entrance theme for wrestling's (then) popular heel group The Midnight Express. In 1987, Moroder produced Falco's song "Body Next to Body". On September 20, 2004 Moroder was honored at the Dance Music Hall of Fame ceremony, held in New York, when he was inducted for his many outstanding achievements and contributions as producer. In 2005, he was given the title of Commendatore by the then President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi."

Moog little phatty + cp-251 in Hi-Fi

YouTube via shaft9000
"Moog little phatty analog synthesizer being voltage-controlled by a Moogerfooger CP-251 voltage processor. This turns the already powerful LP into a semi-modular workhorse. Still less modulation power than a stock Voyager - but easily on par with a modded Odyssey or CS-15. I still need to add the Moogerfooger ring modulator.
The CP-251 is a collection of classic Moog Modular circuits that perform a number of CV functions such as : LFO (square & triangle), Sample & Hold, Noise, Attenuators (x2), 4-input mixer, 4-way multiple, squarewave trigger out & a Lag processor. It's a great value and yet many people (including LP owners) are confused by just what this thing is for. Here's a little taste.
Recorded direct into 1820m interface and post-processed w/ some Sonitus reverb

All videos posted by Shaft9000 on YouTube are for demonstration purposes only. I have no affiliation with Moog or any other synthesizer manufacturer."

Korg Kaossilator as pad controller for the MS-20

YouTube via Newueel
"Don't like playing keyboards? Or just looking for another approach of using the MS-20? This vid is about using a Korg Kaossilator as controller for the Korg MS-20 which allows you to play the MS-20 by a pad!

The Kaossilator is not used for the sounds itself. It is actually used instead of the MS-20 keyboard (using the ESP). So all sounds are coming from the MS-20!

The Kaossilator features give you other great possibilities and ways of playing the MS-20, which you wouldn't be able to using only the keyboard. You can change the key and BPM, choose out of 31 scale patterns, choose out of 50 appregiator gate patterns and of also very usefull: recording and looping a played sequence. In the mean while just tweak the MS-20 for the most crazy sounds..."

Party Chambers
Music with the Roland PMA-5. via jimmersound in the comments of this PMA-5 auction post on MATRIXSYNTH-B. This is one of the reasons why I like putting these posts up. You never know what gems you might find.

Update: "all of the sounds on the tracks posted on the Party Chambers MySpace page were recorded straight out of the PMA-5's 1/8" jack. (Even the 'guitar' sounds in the track "Sky Bar"!)

As far as drum sounds go, it has 808 & 909 sounds in it as well as some super cheesy 80's sounding 'power' drums (Which is odd, since the PMA is from '95 or '96 I think)."

Yamaha GS1/GS2 the First FM Synth Service Manual

"Conmplete manual; with Two large Fold-Out Schematics. Vintage Yamaha, their first FM synthesizers. Very rare to see this manual. The manual is for both the GS1 (the "4-Op") and the GS2 (2-op) versions. Each has their own large fold old schematic in the back."

Pictures of dead CEM chips

"It has long been known that the CEM chips used in so many synthesizers were semi-custom IC. Doug Curtis, just out of college, had won a design contest sponsored by Interdesign (later sold to Ferranti/GEC Plessey) and went on to work for Interdesign before founding Curtis Electromusic Specialties, later to fold into OnChip Systems. The founder of Interdesign and designer of the '555 timer chip, Hans Camenzind, still operates consultancy business in mask programmable analog semicustom IC, Array Design and has written the book Designing Analog Chips that is available free for download or as a print-on-demand hardcopy.

Here are the first two pictures of de-encapsulated (defect) CEM chips, more to follow as time permits."

Roland System 100m 184

images via this auction

"For those unfamilair with the specification, there is a built in arpegiator with 4 modes (up, down, up & down or random) which can run from the internal clock, or can be sync'd to external audio.
There are also 2 monophonic and 2 polyphonic modes, depending on how you want to use this in terms of how the notes are assigned out. Also allows for portmento, and use of the classic roland 'bender'

The polyphonic 4cv can be used to control system 100m modules, or any other compatable modular synth system (doepfer, analog solutions, analog systems etc). There is no reason too, if you really wanted to, that you couldn't use this to control one or more monophonic analog synths as long as they have appropriate cv/gate inputs."

Polivoks

images via this auction
"The Polivoks is the most popular vintage Russian synth made in the early 80's - it was among the first synthesizers produced in the USSR. It had 2 oscillators with pulse or triangle waves, and 1 noise generator, the levels of which were controlled via the internal mixer. You could also connect an external input (guitar, electric piano etc) for mangling with the Polivoks' switchable high/low pass filter and LFO.

Polivoks had been produced since 1982 by Formanta electronic factory (one of the biggest at the time); it was sold exclusively in the USSR. Polivoks has its own particular electronic parts, reliable keyboard (49 notes F to E) made in magnetically controlled contacts; synthesis modules consist of independent boards, which is convenient for maintenance. The synthesizer has 2-voices polyphony; each oscillator works with a keyboard note independently; two types of filters - bandpass/lowpass and external input for cutoff control. In addition, Polivoks is housed in an original body of uncommon design with handy controls. Being closed with a cover, the synthesizer turns into a strong aluminum case.
