* Guitar Synthesizer Music * NEIL NAPPE - "July" (1st half) - 1986 Audion CD from ThisGuy Fr-ritz on Vimeo.

Anyone know what synths were used on this?
"The front cover image didn't scan right. It's not supposed to be that "spotty". Although it did scanned the "taped" part right. :-] You might barely make out the "correct" image shown in front of the CD player.

"July" is the only album I know that was done by Neil Nappe. No keyboards used in making music. According to the back of the album, it was done with "Guitar Synthesizer, M.I.D.I. and more M.I.D.I." Released on a short-lived label and not re-issued to this day.

Here's a little quote from him:
"July" was performed entirely on synthesizers of one sort or another (except for a bit of my trusty '74 Les Paul) and recorded in my home on 4-track cassette format.

1: Valley of Indecision
2: The Alternative
3: The Morning Song
4: Pickupstix

Played on my 2003 Fisher SLIM 1400

Audio recorded using the Line In of my Dell Optiplex GX260

Edited with Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9"

Buchla Model 259e TWISTED WAVEFORM GENERATOR

From the Buchla 259e page
"Popular demand does work occasionally - we’ve resurrected and renamed the original 259e Complex Waveform Generator. The new 259e is practically identical to the original, and is replete with all of the original digital waveshaping, aliasing noise, and foldover frequencies. However, we’ve added new self-modifying, screeching, snarling responses that reflect weird internal origins. Hence the name “twisted”.

Otherwise similar to the 261e Complex Waveform Generator, with voltage-controlled modulation of pitch, amplitude, and timbre, both hard and soft synchronization, and pitch tracking.

In conjunction with the model 225e MIDI Manager, the 259e's pitches respond to internally routed MIDI messages. Up to four 259's can peacefully co-exist in a single system, each with its private MIDI channel.

As in all 200e series modules, the settings of the 259e's pots and switches can be memorized as a part of a preset configuration. Provided you have a 225e or a 206e in your system.

The accompanying picture is actually a photo of a previous 259e. The new one is not quite identical, but has yet to be photographed. The new twisted version is completely software and hardware compatible with the earlier (complex) version. (Suitable for ages 10 – 28)"

Smule's Songbook Featuring Folk Sounds from Around the World

"On Monday, Smule, creator of the popular iPhone Ocarina application, will release its Ocarina songbook featuring Folk Songs from around the World, written by Debbie Cavalier, the Dean of Continuing Education at Berklee College of Music and award-winning children’s musician with “Debbie and Friends”.

The Ocarina is one of the oldest instruments known to man, dating back 12,000 years. Ocarinas have been made of different materials over the years including wood, clay, bones, metal, plastic, and well, yes….iPhones! Perfect for children or adults with little or no musical background, Smule’s songbook will teach you to play eight different folk songs like Kumbayah or Amazing Grace in no time. You can quickly become an Ocarina master and begin to develop a solid foundation in basic music theory along the way.

The Ocarina literally transforms the iPhone into a real instrument where sound is generated by the notes, gestures and nuance of the individual performer. It allows users to hear live performances from around the world, see exactly where they come from. Because of this, over a million users of all ages, ability and musical background, have practiced and performed their Ocarinas, shared their melodies and been brought one step closer to each other with this worldwide musical network.

On Monday, you can download a free version of the songbook on Smule’s website at www.smule.com"

The Tubbiedrone - Circuit Bent Contraption

YouTube via carpeteria
"And yet another Teletubbie is subjected to the horrors of circuit bending. This poor fellow has been gutted and halved, and his skull has been de-fluffed so that his electronic guts could be relocated behind his face (a major improvement, I dare say). He is now rebuilt and can happily jabber on, speaking the eloquent language of circuit bent toys, like a power tool being tossed about in a blender that is tumbling down several flights of metal stairs. Poetry. Enjoy!"

ThereMax V2

YouTube via djfeedback84
"The Theremin is considered the first fully electronic musical instrument. Unlike conventional instruments, it allows performance without physical contact. The movements of the performer's hands, detected by two antennas, control the pitch and volume of the generated sound. Through the use of digital signal processing (DSP), the ThereMax builds on this concept and introduces a number of innovations. The antennas for hand position detection are replaced by ultrasonic distance sensing. All the signals involved are processed digitally, a distinct advantage in terms of versatility. Not only can different sound synthesis algorithms be programmed directly on the instrument but also it can be easily connected to other digital sound synthesis or multimedia devices; a MIDI interface was included for this purpose. The ThereMax also features translucent panels lit by controllable RGB LED devices. This makes it possible to specify sound-colour mappings and create multimedia effects in the spirit of the legendary Ocular Harpsichord by Louis Castel. This is the second version of the ThereMax"

Theremax, an upgrade to Theremin

"This ThereMax was developed by André Gomes during his final year project of his degree in Electronics Engineering at the Departamento de Engenharia Electrónica, Telecomunicações e Informática da Universidade de Aveiro. The ThereMax recreates the concept of the original Theremin but using ultrasound signals to measure the distance to each hand. Using two pairs of sensors the ThereMax sends ultrasonic pulses to measure the time of flight. The two measured distances are then used to modulate the frequency and the amplitude of the generated sound. It also as a MIDI interface to control any MIDI system.

The video shows two modes of operation. First we see the ThereMax generating its own sound has the original Theremin does. Then he can see the ThereMax controlling a PC with the MAX/MSP software using the MIDI interface.

A new version of the ThereMax is being developed and will be presented soon." [above]

shiner hex oscillator + light box in photo feedback loop

YouTube via danielfiction
"here we have two wooden box circuits interacting with each other. the hex oscillator is made in the style of nic collins: six photocells mixed to diodes and competing for voltage dominance. it's housed in a 9.99 gram weight box with a sliding lid so user can control how much light is getting in. let it all hang out.

the light box is an original circuit made with a solid state relay. it pumps out AC in beat frequencies between an audio input and 60 hz. so the lights flicker in response to what you plug into it. in this case, the hex oscillator is the input, which in turn is modulated by the flickering light, and ta daaa! a light-based feedback loop.

autofocus can't handle the intense flickering, so go on and get blurry!"
