"It was back in the fifties when German inventor Ernst Zacharias invented one of the funkiest keyboards of all times. At first the intention was to make a portable version of a harpsichord, but it soon developed into one of the most used keyboards in rock and pop music. You will surely recognize it in the famous pop song "Superstition", and in many other funky songs of the seventies. Many crime movies and TV shows of the 70's and the early 80's had music themes based on funky accompaniments made with the D6, a slap bass and drums. This instrument can reproduce the sound of an electric guitar and can be treated with the same effects used by guitarists (wah-wah, distortion, phaser, chorus, etc.) for both rhythmic and melodic textures, since it is actually based on a set of 60 strings and two humbucker pickups very similar to those used in electric guitars.

The sound engine of GSi Model D6 comes from the exact same code that powers the GSi Gemini and the Crumar Seven as well as the Crumar Mojo 61. Some more parameters have been added to the model in order to make the instrument sound even more versatile and adjustable to personal taste.

The Making Of Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door: Episode 1 - Yamaha GX-1 Demo

video upload by JCM

Note the video should start just before the GX-1 demo. You can use the controls to move forward or back if you want.

"The road to In Through The Out Door led me to research every detail about the record. The episode discusses my personal experience discovering the album, the state of play for Led Zeppelin in 1978 and the elements that made up the sound on the final product: the Yamaha GX-1 and Polar Studios."

Not the seller does not have provenance for the Prophet-5:

"Kills me to do this, but up for grabs is a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 previously owned by Ric Ocasek and Syncro Sound. This unit was purchased by Ric personally in 1982 for the Beatitude sessions (where it can be heard all over the album) and was also used for the Heartbeat City recording sessions along with Greg Hawkes Rev 2. After the Heartbeat City sessions, Ric said he shipped this Prophet 5 back to Boston where it lived until the studio's final ‘closing’ in the early 90s. When I first met Ric around 2012 he confirmed use on Beatitude and Heartbeat City, but made it very clear it was never used by the Cars live. I also cannot confirm it was used on any other specific recordings but many artists tracked at Syncro Sound including Benjamin Orr, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Peter Wolf, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, Ministry, Alan Vega (Suicide), New Kids on the Block, Cyndi Lauper, and many others. It was most likely used for some sessions considering it was the only Prophet 5 at the studio.

Please note, I do not have a COA for this item. I did reach out to Ric a few years ago about getting a COA for the Prophet 5 along with the JCM 800 I also have listed from Syncro Sound. His response to my request was that he would prefer to buy them back from me, to which we failed to come upon agreeable terms.

The cosmetic condition is very good to excellent, as it has been studio kept for nearly 40 years now. There is a few imperfections, but as you can see for the most part it is in wonderful condition. I last had it serviced in 2016 for routine maintenance. Fully functional and includes factory MIDI, which works great."
