Morton Subotnick in Vienna

via Noiseconformist

"Yesterday Morton Subotnick performed here in Vienna. Before that he gave us a lecture and talked about the origins of his work and of course about the San Francisco Tape Music Center.

When he spoke about those two Buchlas on stage he called them the 'the newest one' (200e) and 'the oldest one'.

'These modules right here are probably the first one (synthesizer) which was ever made.', meaning the modules saying 'San Francisco Tape Music Center Incorporated'. (Buchla's idea how to name it, something what S. obviously didn't like at all - '... this is not a business ...')
The slides said 1964-1965 but already showed a Buchla 100 Music Box.

I let the quotes speak for themselves, reading and listening to other sources gives a somewhat contradictory image.

Mr. Subotnick kept speaking about a 'music easel', in a metaphorical sense, he wanted to have.

This is not to be mixed up with the Buchla Music Easel we know. Which obviously came out much later.

The adaption of "Silver Apples Of The Moon" is wonderful, very vivid, powerful and gentle at the same moment. Lillevan's projections looked very organic and were a great part of the show. I'm looking forward to Subotnick's "Jacob's Room" on Saturday!"

Joy Division Pulsar cp1919 in Alchemy

You might remember this post on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album cover. Gsynth was curious what it might sound like as a wavetable you could import and scan through on the Waldorf Blofeld. Well, noiseconformist decided to see what it would sound like imported into Camel Audio's Alchemy. It's actually pretty interesting and does sound like a wavetable. You can hear and read about it here. Comments disabled here to keep them there.

Joy division pulsar cp1919 wavetable

via Gsynth on the forum

"it would cycle through each step in the pulsar as each page in the table
this would show the harmonic content i guess

it looks similar to the wavetrip wavetables harmonic content [image below]

problems:
1 probably not a very musical sound but who knows
2 you cant see all the peaks
3 i have no clue how to make a wave table

solutions:
1 make slight minor adjustments to "tune" the harmonics while still keeping it looking like the original
2 find a historic chart or diagram or recordings possibly? or guess/ make it up as long as it sounds good
3 someone else could make it please? maybe it could be loaded as a sample into the waldorf blofeld

anyways that would be really amazing if anyone could help me with this"

It would definitely be interesting. Anyone up to the task or know where to start?

Update via noiseconformist in the comments: "Since I'm evaluating Camel Audio's Alchemy I tried something: http://sinespine.org/Noiseconformist/cp1919/"

Update via pea in the comments: "this reminds me of a kate bush album cover thing that i helped figure out. details here (see my comment down the page)"

Update via Qwave in the comments: "The 3D format picture with "56 wavetrip" written in the window is a lift-off of my self made analysis of the WAVE wavetables I did many years ago using an old Performer Mac and Sound Edit... The original picture" So the second image and samples are not cp1919.

Doepfer Ribbon Controller Issues

via Noiseconformist:

"The entire weight and force on this cable connection is put on 6 small solder joints of the USB socket. That's it! The main part has to be taken by two slightly bigger joints which connect to signal ground. If they break, the signal is lost and the ribbon controller is dead as a doornail. Eventually the synthesizer probably goes berserk (what happend to me). This joint would have broken soon (red pointer)."

The bottom shot is Jean-Michel Jarre's ribbon controller with some Gaffer Tape. Could be to remedy this problem or it could be to keep the cable attached, or both of course.

Update: bottom two pics: a solution via Noiseconformist:

"Quick and dirty solution:

Aluminium profile, some holes, cable ties - voilà.

The profile is attached via the ribbon bar's original screws (two on the side).

Note that the supplied cable is pretty stiff and short and that this doesn't relief all the strain from the socket and PCB.

Eventually I'll have to replace the entire socket, I'm afraid.

On a side note: If the delivered 'USB'-cable was flexible, I mean really flexible, much of the mechanical stress wouldn't occur."

Update2: See the comments section at the bottom of this post for additional updates.

Korg MS20 Filter - KORG35

A few links cropped up on AH today regarding the Korg MS20 filter:

MS20study.pdf (2.25M) by Tim Stinchcombe. Tim actually spent quite a bit of time studying the Korg MS10/MS20 filters and just made this 46 page pdf available on the list today.

RMC posted a link to his contribution - pdfs and gifs of the schematic and trace. I noticed that RMC referred to the filter as the KORG35. I never realized this is what it was called, so I did a quick search on KORG35 and found this site which has more info, links and a DIY clone with details and images.

My favorite Korg MS20 Clone? The Frostwave Resonator (pictured). I picked it up years ago and will never get rid of it. It just shreds for lack of a better description. It's the aural equivalent of finding that sweet spot in your ear with a good q-tip. It will shred paint off your walls. Super aggressive with a bit of resonance. Highly, highly recommended.

I should also mention the MOTM-420 and the Doepfer A-106 Xtreme Filter. I'm sure there are others. If you know them, feel free to post them.

Update: Make sure to check out the comments for others. The following was sent to me via email from Tim: "I compiled a list of known clones a while back, and this has been on it for some time. Mind you I only recently discovered that a discrete version of the Korg35 is to be seen in the Korg X-911 guitar synth (which I've not checked in any detail yet), and someone from synth DIY has just pointed out that it was probably originally developed for use in the 'PS' range of polysynths, so it looks like there is yet another avenue for me to tap into!"

Udpate via Noiseconformist in the comments:
"Hi, this is just to inform you that Tim got his new site up and running.
So the MS-20 document can be found here: http://www.timstinchcombe.co.uk/synth/MS20_study.pdf HTH, Michael (a.k.a Noiseconformist)"
